This open letter to you Gushungo, President Robert Gabriel Mugabe, is to wish you a happy birthday as you turn 95 on your way to a century; makati zete muchienda kuzana (relaxed on your way to a century). I am honoured to have worked intimately with you. I am very elated that history will record me as one of the very few senior leaders that consistently stood by you publicly and privately.
I am proud to have served in your government as a cabinet minister for two years and a deputy minister for three years. I am gratified to have been an officer bearer under the civilian ZANU PF that you led from the time I was elected into the District Executive at Porta Farm in 1996 and rose up the ranks to be a Politburo member until 2017.
Those 21 years as a leader in ZANU PF, Parliament and Government gave me the opportunity to know you, appreciate the environment that you operated within, and understand the forces that you had to contend with.
Unfortunately, a very large number of people, especially the younger ones, have only had to see you through the eyes of your detractors to a point where they profess themselves on you within an envelope of misinformation, ignorance and conjecture.
Most of the people who interacted with you, including senior leaders, are not able to honestly tell your story because they remain terrorised and traumatised under a militarily captured ZANU PF and the militarised state of Zimbabwe.
Furthermore, Gushungo, when we engaged with you as senior leaders we considered such interactions as privileged discussions which we feel cannot be divulged without your express consent. As a result, the story of Zimbabwe and your participation in shaping our beautiful nation is being distorted.
Worse still, all of those who supported the November 2017 coup nationally, regionally, continentally and globally have come to the sad realisation that the so-called MILITARILY ASSISTED TRANSITION was in effect a negation of the conclusion of a democratisation process that would have put the principles of the 2013 Constitution into effect.
Whilst some of us who were privileged enough to be aware of and agree with your plans on ZANU PF succession know that the November 2017 coup was in effect a MILITARILY INTERRUPTED SUCCESSION.
Having had dinner with you and Honourable Saviour Kasukuwere at your Blue Roof Residence, I know for a fact that you planned on supporting Dr Sidney Sekeramayi to succeed you. From telephone conversations that you held with Professor Jonathan Moyo and myself jointly, I also know for a fact that you have never supported the notion of your wife taking over.
Some of the people that saw hope in the November 2017 coup are so emotionally scarred by the knowledge that they supported a misadventure that is worsening the plight of Zimbabweans. They did not understand what you meant and why you would consistently say that politics leads the gun and that the gun should never lead politics.
They are not aware of how you attempted to forestall the military takeover of ZANU PF and in effect the country to a point where Zimbabwe is a now a military state. They are not even aware of your attempts, months before the coup, to request some regional leaders to speak to Chiwenga to accept Dr Sekeramayi as a successor instead of his plan to have Mnangagwa succeed you and him becoming the deputy.
I am aware that divulging these issues is tantamount to betraying confidential conversations. I have had to do so in order to buttress my request for you to record your views, thoughts and perspectives.
There are several of your former colleagues that are constrained from setting the record straight until you have done so yourself first. People need you to remind them of how you always stood by them and tried to protect them.
You remain an indomitable icon to those that understand and appreciate you. However, I would like to request you to record your views and perspectives in order to assist those that have not been fortunate to know enough about you, what you believe in, what you stand for and what you
have achieved.

FULL TEXT: Patrick Zhuwawo's Open Letter To "Uncle Bob" @95

ZANU PF and the government have ignored former President Robert Mugabe on the occasion of his 95th birthday.
Mugabe turned 95 on February 21st, more than a year after he was pushed out of office through a military coup.
According to Newsday, Information Ministry permanent secretary, Ndavaningi Mangwana said there were no plans to give the former Zanu PF leader a treat. Said Mangwana:
<blockquote>Nothing specific as far as I know. I will inquire with the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet (Misheck Sibanda)… But I think it’s likely to be a private affair as it was last year.</blockquote>
Presidential spokesperson George Charamba said that he was not aware of any government plans to celebrate Mugabe’s birthday, while ZANU PF spokesperson Simon Khaya Moyo said that he was not sure if the party’s youth league had planned anything.

ZANU, Govt Pay No Attention To Mugabe As He Turns 95

Former President Robert Mugabe has turned 95 today. His birthday is a public holiday known as  Robert Gabriel Mugabe National Youth Day.
During Mugabe’s reign, Zanu-PF youth league hosted lavish birthday parties for him using taxpayers’ money as well as coercing businesspeople and villagers to fund the event.
The former leader of Zanu-PF and Zimbabwe was removed from power in 2017 through a military coup led by General Constantino Chiwenga. Mugabe resigned under pressure from the military after army tanks were deployed in Harare, and politicians close to him were attacked and fled the country for safety. His party’s legislators also moved a motion, together with opposition MPs to impeach him.

Former President Robert Mugabe Turns 95

ZANU PF youths have vowed to march on former President Robert Mugabe’s birthday, February 21 in solidarity with the current President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
This was revealed by the ZANU PF National Youth League Political Commissar, Godfrey Tsenengam while addressing about 300 district chairpersons who congregated in Marondera.
Absent from the meeting were youth league national executive memmbers Tonderai Bosha, Edmore Kandira, Mashonaland West youth league boss Vengai Musengi and Mashonaland East province youth leader Kelvin Mutsvairo.
The march comes after nationwide riots broke out in January over a sharp rise in the price of fuel. A government crackdown on protestors resulted in the death of 17 people with hundreds more seriously injured.

ZANU PF Youths To March In Solidarity With Mnangagwa On February 21

Zanu-PF yesterday congratulated former President Robert Mugabe on his 94th birthday as the country marked the National Youth Day in his honour.
Zanu-PF national spokesman Simon Khaya Moyo wished Mugabe a happy birthday. He also hoped that the youth would use National Youth Day to engage in activities such as cleanup csampaigns. Said Khaya Moyo:
<blockquote>It is a day set aside as a public holiday by the Government to honour our former President for the role he played during the liberation struggle and after independence. We believe the youths will utilise the day by engaging in various activities like cleaning towns, cities and places where they reside. We wish them well and also wish the former President a happy birthday.</blockquote>

Zanu-PF Wishes Mugabe Happy Birthday

Addressing youth members drawn from the nine districts in Mashonaland East province at Dema Rural District Council grounds on Monday, Zanu-PF youth league deputy secretary, Lewis Matutu has said that former President Robert Mugabe’s birthday bash will be held at his Borrowdale Brooke home popular known as Blue Roof.
Matutu said members of the youth league will take cakes to Mugabe’s home to celebrate his birthday. Said Matutu:
<blockquote>Mugabe didn’t wrong (President Emmerson) Mnangagwa, but was being influenced by his wife. The party asked him to rest after realising that he had no capacity to lead, as Grace was now running the show. The former President admitted to that and he voluntarily agreed to resign. He (Mugabe) is the father to (President Emmerson) Mnangagwa. Mugabe did a lot of good things like empowerment and land redistribution among others. To us, Mugabe is our icon, a revolutionary and we joined the party while he was there. As the youth executive, on his birthday, we are going to buy a big cake, we are going to team up with other members from party associations and head to Blue Roof. We will knock at the gate, and sing for him, that is if he opens. But if he doesn’t open the gate, that’s it.</blockquote>

Mugabe's Birthday To Be Held At Blue Roof

Zanu PF youth league leader Pupurai Togarepi vowed to continue honouring former president Robert Mugabe’s birthday and are planning to throw him a party.
He however said the party will be a small event unlike the big ones that were usually held. Said Togarepi:
<blockquote>Since February 21 has been declared a national holiday, we are taking advantage of that day to honour Mugabe. As youths, we will embark on charitable work as well spend some time with the former President. We want to have a cake and share with him. This, for us, will be a small event unlike previous ones. For us as youths, we believe that since this day (February 21) has been declared a holiday, it is enough honour to the former President and we shall carry on his legacy. The best way is through helping those in need and the elderly.</blockquote>
The youth league under its former leader Kudzanai Chipanga was organising a big jamboree to be hosted in Nyanga.

Zanu-PF To Throw Birthday Party For Mugabe

Former president Robert Mugabe’s birthday on 21 February has been gazetted as Robert Gabriel Mugabe National Youth Day, effectively making it a public holiday. The notice is contained in Statutory Instrument 143 published in the Government Gazette on Friday.
Calls Mugabe’s birthday to be made a national holiday were adopted by Government in August. The day coincides with the 21st February Movement celebrations meant to commemorate Mugabe’s principles and ideals. The 21st February Movement was formed in 1986, by the Zanu-PF Youth League under the leadership of then Deputy Secretary for Youth Affairs Webster Shamu.

Mugabe's birthday now officially a public holiday

Former Vice President turned opposition leader Joice Mujuru has claimed that she pushed out of the government and out of Zanu-PF because she was opposed to President Mugabe’s poor economic policies. Mujuru blamed these policies for the low unemployment rate and the increase in the number of vendors.  Addressing hundreds of vendors and informal traders in Bindura on Monday, Mujuru said:
<blockquote>When I was in government, I used to regularly clash with Mugabe over his economic policies and he was not happy with that and that is why we parted ways. However, as the next president of Zimbabwe, I assure you that there will be economic growth and industries will reopen.
But for this (economic growth) to happen, every eligible person should register to vote in next year’s elections. Only by voting will we be able to remove the Zanu PF regime and bring social and economic development in Zimbabwe
…I am aware that you did not venture into vending by choice, but because of the harsh economic environment as a result of Mugabe’s misrule</blockquote>

<a href="https://twitter.com/cemambo/status/898151946812575744">News reaching us</a> is that the announcement on the declaration of President Robert Mugabe’s birthday on 21 February as a public holiday is set for tomorrow.
As far as 2015, Zanu-PF’s youth league has been calling for Mugabe’s birthday to be declared a national holiday. At the time Pupurai Togarepi proposed Robert Mugabe Day which he said would be celebrated in the same manner South Africa commemorates Nelson Mandela Day. In February 2017, Zanu-PF secretary for youth affairs Kudzanai Chipanga said that celebrating Mugabe’s birthday is just like celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.
Zanu-PF’s youth league has also proposed the renaming of Harare International Airport to honour Robert Mugabe.

Mugabe's birthday set to be announced as a public holiday

Addressing Zanu-PF senior officials and members in Chinhoyi, the party’s youth secretary Kudzanai Chipanga threatened not to invite ministers to next year’s 21st February Movement celebrations next year if Harare International Airport is not renamed after President Robert Mugabe.
Said Chipanga:
<blockquote>I am repeating what I said in Plumtree some weeks ago, that senior members of the party and ministers will not be allowed to attend the 21st February Movement celebrations next year if the Harare International Airport is not going to be named after Mugabe before the celebrations. The youths demand renaming of the airport and this must be done as a matter of urgency.</blockquote>

Zanu-PF youth demand Harare International Airport to be renamed after Mugabe, ministers threatened

Zanu-PF youth in Manicaland have suspended their provincial finance secretary, Taurai Chiripamberi, for allegedly diverting a cow donated for President Robert Mugabe’s 93rd birthday celebrations to his own use.
Provincial youth leader, Mubuso Chinguno, exposed the issue at the weekend, saying the beast had been donated to feed party youths, as they travelled for Mugabe’s birthday celebrations in Matobo in February. Chinguno told Zanu PF provincial youth commissar, Innocent Hamandishe, that Chiripamberi led the party’s fundraising committee, but chose to operate single-handedly. Said Chinguno:
<blockquote>Boss (Hamandishe), we want to advise you that we suspended our secretary for finance Taurai Chiripamberi. When we conducted our fundraising for the 21st February Movement, we set up a fundraising committee led by Chiripamberi. There was no meeting that was held by Chiripamberi. He ran the show like his own tuckshop. He was given a beast (cow) by well-wishers, so that we could feed our youths when travelling to Matobo, but he converted the beast to his own use. There was no report we received as management from him (Chiripamberi), we tried to contact him, but he was not listening to anyone.All our efforts fell on deaf ears. We did a post-mortem on the matter and we decided to suspend him. We gave him 30 days to respond, but he is yet to come back to us.</blockquote>
NewsDay’s efforts to get in touch with Chiri[amberi were unfruitful as his mobile phone went unanswered.

Zanu-PF youth leader suspended for allegedly stealing cow meant for Mugabe's birthday

ZANU PF youth leaders, including Davis Muhambi , the party’s Bulawayo provincial youth secretary for Finance, who allegedly refused to raise funds for President Robert Mugabe’s 93rd birthday, have been suspended following last week’s demonstration at the party’s provincial offices in Bulawayo.
Central committee member, Anna Moyo, was suspended for allegedly teaming up with other youths during the demonstrations. Muhambi was suspended for allegedly refusing to fundraise for Mugabe’s birthday celebration which was held last month after he allegedly told the provincial youth leadership that he could not fundraise “for a 93 year old” while youths were starving.
Other youth leaders who were suspended are provincial deputy secretary for education, Munashe Matutsa and Mabutho Moyo, Luveve district youth commissar.

Zanu PF youth leader suspended for allegedly refusing to raise money for Mugabe's birthday

Speaking to NewZimbabwe.com, Former Education Minister David Coltart confirmed that school children from around the country travelled back home on empty stomachs after attending President Robert Mugabe’s 93rd birthday celebrations in Matopos.
Said Coltart:
<blockquote>I am reliably informed by a cabinet minister who attended the event that there was insufficient food for the attendees and I fear that many of the school children who returned back to their places on Saturday night had insufficient food. If this is in fact the case, then that is in itself an appalling abuse of these children’s fundamental rights.</blockquote>
A parent who spoke to NewZimbabwe.com on condition of anonymity, claimed that her child nearly fainted because of hunger. Said the parent:
<blockquote>My child left Mutare with other delegates on Friday morning. I hear they were not given any thing the whole day on Saturday. They also traveled back on empty stomachs on Saturday night. The pupils were forced to share the few items which those who had money bought.</blockquote>
Coltart also expressed concern over the closure of Matebeleland schools for the birthday party as well as the transportation of school children during the night.

Addressing Zanu-PF supporters and well-wishers who attended this year’s edition of the 21st February Movement celebrations, President Robert Mugabe said that his successor should be strong who will not reverse the land reform programme. He also said the person should have traveled the revolutionary journey without turning back.
Said Mugabe:

Mugabe speaks on successor's qualities

In an interview with The Herald soon after the 21st February Movement celebrations, Zanu PF Secretary for Youth Affairs, Kudzanai Chipanga attributed the success of the birthday celebrations to President Mugabe, whom he said was divinely anointed.
Said Chipanga:
<blockquote>In recent days it has been raining, even during the night. But just because the President descended on this place, the rains stopped and we had some sunshine. As you can see that the President is done with his speeches and we are through with the programme, we are about to receive some rains again. So to us it means President Mugabe is not an ordinary person. President Mugabe has got some divine anointing from the Lord Almighty. As we always say, President Mugabe is unlike any other leader in the world, President Mugabe is God-given and it can even be witnessed by the weather.</blockquote>

Mugabe is divinely anointed even weather "respects him" says Chipanga

Speaking during his birthday celebrations, President Robert Mugabe called for the re-introduction of national youth service and urged the youths to take advantage of the Chitepo Ideological College in Masvingo to learn more about the country’s history.
Said President Mugabe:
<blockquote>There also must be national youth service. We certainly must start the National Youth Service Programme. I don’t know why we have slowed down, we dragged our feet on this one. I hope our youths are making use of that Chitepo Ideological College in order to know the past, the foundations of our revolution as well as prepare themselves for the future; chart the road of governance tomorrow.</blockquote>

President Robert Mugabe celebrates his birthday today. Here are five things you probably did not know or have forgotten about him:

<li>He has 16 degrees, 9 of which he studied for and 5 honorary degrees.</li>
<li>He joined active politics in 1960 when he joined the <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Joshua_Nkomo" title="Joshua Nkomo">Joshua Nkomo</a> led <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/National_Democratic_Party" title="National Democratic Party">National Democratic Party</a> (NDP) which opposed white minority rule. When the party was banned, he joined a breakaway party <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_African_People%27s_Union" title="Zimbabwe African People's Union">Zimbabwe African People’s Union</a> (ZAPU). In 1963 he co-founded the ZANU PF which he currently heads.</li>
<li>Mugabe came face to face with growing regional disapproval in Zambia. On Saturday 24 January 2015, he was faced with a demonstration in Zambia after he had gone to witness the inauguration of Zambian president Lungu.</li>
<li>On 4 February 2015, Mugabe fell on the red carpet soon after addressing his party supporters at the Harare International Airport after returning Ethiopia where had ascended to the position of Chairperson. State media reported that it was a minor carpet mishap while on social media animated pictures of his fall went viral.</li>
<li>He married <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Sally_Mugabe" title="Sally Mugabe">Sally Mugabe</a> near Hayfron in 1961 and together they had one son Michael Nhamodzenyika who died in his infancy. Sally died of kidney failure in 1992 prompting Mugabe to marry <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Grace_Mugabe" title="Grace Mugabe">Grace Mugabe</a> nee Marufu who was his secretary in 1996.</li>
