<blockquote><p>Officers in the President’s Department this morning invited 263Chat journalist Lovejoy Mutingwiza for an interview at the Harare Central Police Station. The interview lasted an estimated 2 hours. Mutongwiza, who was accompanied by MISA Zimbabwe lawyer, was released without any charges.</p>
<p>During the process, the interviewing officers expressed concern about the coverage of events that they said had an impact on national security and safety. According to the lawyer Christopher Mhike, the officers did not allow him or any of the editorial staff that was accompanying Mutongwiza to sit in the interview.</p>
<p>After the interview, Mhike gave the following statement:</p>
<p>“I do confirm that today, August 29 2019, 263Chat journalist Lovejoy Mutongwiza reported at Harare Central Ploce Station in response to an invitation that had been extended to him by the President’s department. The Department wanted to discuss with Lovejoy issues relating to his coverage of State events. He was not charged for contravening any law and he was released after about 2 hours.”</p></blockquote>

FULL TEXT: 263Chat Reporter 'Interviewed' By Officers In The President's Department

<p>Journalists from the country’s private media marched to the Harare Central Police Station on Monday to hand over a petition against their harassment following the attack on 263Chat journalists last week in Harare CBD.</p>
<p>However, when the scribes arrived at the police station, their petition was reportedly torn in front of them while they were detained by police officers. Writing on Twitter, human rights lawyer Doug Coltart said:</p>
<blockquote><p>Today Zimbabwean journalists marched to Harare Central Police station to hand over a petition against police harrassment of journalists following an attack on <s>@</s><b>263Chat</b>’s offices last week. Their petition was torn up in front of them &amp; now they’re detained!</p></blockquote>
<p>263Chat journalist, Lovejoy Mtongwiza, who is a victim of police brutality wrote:</p>
<blockquote><p>So when we took our petition to @<span class="link-complex-target">PoliceZimbabwe</span> Harare Central Police Station, one of the police officers tore our petitions and threw them in the bin. We are simply trying to reason with the police but they are being hostile.</p></blockquote>

Police Trash Anti-harassment Petition, Detain Journalists

<p>Journalists from the country’s various media houses on Monday marched to the Harare Central Police Station to hand over a petition over their arrest and harassment while doing their work by state security agents.</p>
<p>Reports indicate that the journalists have been detained at Harare Central Police station as they sought to present a petition against the wanton harassment.</p>

<h4><strong>The MDC condemns the raiding of 263Chat Offices in Harare.</strong></h4>
<p>Freedom of the media is guaranteed in section in 61 of the Constitution and the Constitution is supreme.</p>
<p>Any conduct inconsistent with the Constitution must be investigated.</p>
<p>Shooting and injuring a 263Chat journalist is not only barbaric and criminal but unjustifiable in a democratic society.</p>
<p>The use of repressive State apparatus to close the democratic space is unacceptable, it puts an unnecessary premium on the profile of Zimbabwe and inflicts isolation of the nation.</p>
<p>Even worse the raid resulted in the theft of phones and other valuables in the newsroom.</p>
<p>We call for a full investigation of all the people on duty in the resultant operation.</p>

FULL TEXT: MDC Condemns Police Raid On 263Chat Offices

<p>Amnesty International has condemned a police raid on a media house in Harare on Thursday afternoon.</p>
<p>Police raided the offices of online news site 263Chat after one of its journalists, Lovejoy Mutongwiza, filmed the removal of street vendors in Harare.</p>
<p>In a statement released on Thursday, Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for Southern Africa, Muleya Mwananyanda said:</p>
<blockquote><p>Today’s attack on the 263 Chat offices was designed to send a chilling message to journalists and shows the lengths the Zimbabwean police are prepared to go to muzzle media freedom.</p>
<p>The authorities must end the attack on the media and launch a prompt, thorough and effective investigation into this attack. and ensure that all suspected perpetrators are identified and brought to justice.</p></blockquote>
<p>The raid on 263Chat offices happened after police tried to stop Mtongwiza from filming the harassing of vendors in the CBD.</p>
<p>When a group of police and municipal officers charged at the journalist, he ran to seek shelter at the offices.</p>
<p>The officers pursued him and fired teargas into the office where 14 other journalists were working.</p>

Amnesty International Condemns Police Raid On 263Chat

<p>The government has revealed that it has commenced investigations on the assault of 263Chat journalists by plainclothed police officers in Harare on Thursday afternoon.</p>
<p>The officers allegedly threw teargas canisters into the offices through a window and shut the door, forcing the journalists to escape through windows.</p>
<p>The police officers were engaged in running battles with vendors when the incident took place. Reports indicate that the journalists were covering the disturbances when police officers charged, resulting in some journalists sustaining injuries.</p>
<p>Through its Twitter handle, the Ministry of Information said:</p>
<blockquote><p>Govt has been made aware of an incident in Harare CBD which involves allegations of mistreatment of members of the Media made against the police. These allegations are now under investigation. Our constitution guarantees freedom of the Media and Govt respects the Constitution.</p></blockquote>

Govt 'Investigating' Assault On 263Chat Journalists By Police Officers

<p>Zimbabwe Republic Police officers on Thursday threw teargas into the offices of a private media house, 263Chat in Harare Central Business District.</p>
<p>The officers were involved in running battles with illegal vendors when they threw canisters through the window causing chaos in the offices and forcing journos to escape through a window. Several people were injured in the incident.</p>
<p>Writing about the incident on Twitter, 263Chat founder, Nigel Mugamu said:</p>
<blockquote><p>I came back from school run to find the @263Chat team outside the building. @cohsunshinecity police &amp; ZRP who were chasing vendors came into our office to disrupt our reporting of the incident &amp; fired tear gas into the office #263Chat.</p>
<p>Our reporter @LJaymut10 was capturing photos and videos of the @cohsunshinecity police &amp; ZRP in First Street. They chased him into the @263Chat office. The officials were in plain clothes &amp; didn’t identify themselves.</p>
<p>The majority of the @263Chat team were in the office at the time. The tear gas canister was fired into the office and the officials blocked the door so the team couldn’t escape. My team escaped via the window.</p>
<p>@263Chat reporter @LJaymut10 was injured in the process and will require medical attention. We can’t get back into the office bc of the tear gas. Part of my team has gone to the @PoliceZimbabwe to report the matter while we make attempts to resolve this issue.</p></blockquote>

Police Throw Tear Gas Into Media House, Journalists Injured

<p>Zimbabweans normally use the April Fools day to prank each other. Today, some individuals raised thought provoking arguments. Professor Jonathan Moyo and Raymond Majongwe have suggested that pranks on Fools day are better than election results.</p>

<p>Their posts are suggestive of the view that the Zimbabwean election outcome is a mere prank. Reports abound showing that several countries globally fail the test of conducting free, fair, and credible elections. Elections are a fundamental pillar of Democracy.</p>
<p>In a related story, a 263Chat report claimed that MDC’s elective Congress had been postponed to 2020. It was scheduled for the 24th to the 26th of May this year. The 263Chat post claimed that the party leadership was contemplating on an out of Congress settlement.</p>
<p>A 263Chat source is quoted as saying:</p>
<blockquote><p>Last night we had a very long meeting in which both the three vice presidents agreed to settle something out without the congress.</p>

<p>Later in the day, Jacob Mafume the party spokesperson dismissed reports. He assured that the congress was still on as planned.</p>
