Former Warriors and Dynamos coach Sunday Chidzambga says had it not been for China-based striker Nyasha Mushekwi’s intervention, the national team could have failed to fulfil their last group encounter against DRC at AFCON 2019.
Speaking on Zimpapers Television Network show The Couch, Chidzambga lifted the lid on what really happened before the contest, in which Zimbabwe lost 0-4.
There were media reports claiming that there were a series of stand-offs between players and the Felton Kamambo-led ZIFA board over money during the continental showpiece in Egypt.
Chidzambga, who quit his Warriors job soon after the 2019 AFCON tournament, confirmed that indeed not all was well in the Zimbabwean camp. He said:
<blockquote>Against DRC, there were so many problems and according to what the ZIFA board and the players had agreed, there wasn’t going to be any game at all.
Up until the technical team spoke to Mushekwi and then we had to try and persuade the players to play the game.</blockquote>
While the majority of fans may still blame goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze for his high-school blunders that led to goals, Chidzambga’s revelations prove ZIFA’s culpability in the fiasco.
The Kamambo-led board has also unapologetically continued to use the CAPS United bus, bought by Mushekwi, to ferry the national team.

Former ZIFA president, Philip Chiyangwa has dismissed allegations that he sabotaged the Warriors’ Africa Cup of Nations as unfounded.
Current president, Felton Kamambo on Thursday said that the Warriors could have reached the finals had they not been derailed by Chiyangwa and a cartel he was leading.
However, Chiyangwa said that he has no desire to be ZIFA president again. He said;
<blockquote>For the avoidance of doubt, let me make it clear that I don’t have any interest in being ZIFA president or any post in that association and, therefore, I have no reason to be fighting anyone because I am above that level now.
I did what I did during my time, I had my success stories and it was God’s plan and I walked away with grace, unscathed but some people now want to punish me with allegations that are unfounded.</blockquote>
Chiyangwa defended his track record, saying that he paid off the Tom Sainfiet debt to secure the players’ future. He said:
<blockquote>I won’t lose sleep over this, my first assignment as ZIFA president was to secure the future of these players by paying off that (Tom) Saintfiet debt so that the boys could play at the World Cup again and I can’t be seen to be destabilising the same team I worked hard to give them a chance to shine on the big stage.
I will respond accordingly but I to say that I am very disappointed with what ZIFA are claiming.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Sunday Chidzambga remains Warriors coach and has been asked to prepare for the upcoming CHAN assignment while the ZIFA technical committee will review the AFCON show.

Chiyangwa Denies 'Unfounded' Claims That He Unsettled Warriors At The 2019 AFCON Finals

Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) president, Felton Kamambo, said that the Warriors’ AFCON campaign was sabotaged by his predecessor Philip Chiyangwa, other ZIFA board members and journalist Hope Chizuzu.
Kamambo also accused Omega Sibanda and board member Chamu Chiwanza of derailing the Warriors AFCON campaign.
He further claimed that players were being told by Chizuzu that ZIFA was shortchanging them in respect of their allowances. Said Kamambo:
<blockquote>In fact, I want to bear with the players. I feel for them as well because you are in camp and someone is phoning you and giving you information that the supporters that are coming to Egypt are being paid US$400 per day when you have been paid US$1 500 to participate in the whole tournament.
Yes, US$1 500.
That is what we had agreed then the other amount was going to be paid as and when but because of the third forces coming into the camp, the likes of Hope Chizuzu, the former president Philip Chiyangwa, board member Chamu Chiwanza, that acted as a catalyst to cause confusion in the camp.
The Executive Committee was not amused by the chaos that surrounded the Warriors camp at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations finals and will institute an Adhoc committee to probe several issues that characterised the team’s stay in Egypt.
… ZIFA has evidence of infiltration of the Warriors camp by a group of vengeful individuals bent on undoing the great work done by the current executive.</blockquote>
Kamambo revealed that FIFA, CAF and COSAFA have been notified for possible corrective action to be taken against the saboteurs so that they are barred from football corridors. He added:
<blockquote>The emergency Committee has also taken a decision to recall Philip Chiyangwa from his position as COSAFA president. The Emergency Committee has resolved to suspend Executive Committee Member Chamunorwa Chiwanza.
Mr Chiwanza is accused of electoral fraud, threatening a member of the ZIFA congress, destabilising Warriors Afcon camp among a host of charges.
Mr Chiwanza’s suspension would be ratified by the next full board meeting in line with article 40.3 of the ZIFA constitution.</blockquote>

The Sports and Recreation Commission  (SRC) has written to the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) demanding explanations on the manner in which the country’s football governing body handled the Warriors’ ill-fated Africa Cup of Nations 2019 campaign.
SRC has demanded that ZIFA give detailed information around the campaign before the close of business, Friday 12th July 2019.

Soccer fans in Egypt are reportedly bitter after the Zimbabwe national football team, the Warriors, exited the Africa Cup of Nations after finishing bottom of Group A.
The Warriors were a second team to some Egyptian fans especially given their valiant display in the opening match of the tournament in which they narrowly lost to the hosts 1-0.
Ahmed Hassan, an Egyptian taxi driver, spoke to The Herald about the locals’ sadness following the Warriors’ departure. He said:
<blockquote>It’s a shame, really, I didn’t watch the game because I was following what was happening in the Egypt game.
I had this feeling that the Zimbabwe team would qualify, they gave a strong performance against us and they should have won against Uganda.
Here, the supporters love an underdog and, before the game against Zimbabwe, we were so sure we would win three, four or five goals but we were surprised that it was a tough one.
That won Zimbabwe some respect and it’s bad they are going home and that was a big defeat, no one expected that.</blockquote>
The Warriors were also popular as local football giants, Al Ahly and Zamalek are reportedly keen on signing talisman Khama Billiat.

Egyptian Soccer Lovers Sad To See Warriors Exit AFCON - Report

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is relieved that Zimbabwe has been eliminated from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, a report suggests.
This follows Zimbabweans players’ tendency to mutiny against the local soccer mother body, ZIFA over allowances.
The Herald claims that its sources revealed that there was no guarantee that had Zimbabwe reached the knockout stages of the tournament, players were not going to threaten to boycott the tournament. Sources to The Herald said:
<blockquote>… there was a concern that should the Zimbabwe team qualify for the next round, the issues over pay would dominate because, from what we heard, there was a contract that was signed between the players and the Zimbabwe FA officials where the players would be paid specific amounts game by game.
Given the contracts contained clauses, we are told, that provided for payment just for appearance in a match, this would have meant that every extra game would need some extra payments.
The money that the Zimbabwe FA would have received, that is about an extra US$175 000 if the team had made the Round of 16, would not have been enough to guarantee that everything would be paid without the case of the protests emerging again in their camp.
‘No one will say it publicly but there is a sense that the elimination of the Zimbabwe national team is being welcomed by some people among the organisers, and even the CAF leadership, because of the issues that have been happening here.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe exited the tournament on Sunday night in ignominy following a 4-0 loss to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

CAF 'Relieved' After Warriors' AFCON Elimination

<blockquote>The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) would like to apologise to all Zimbabweans following the Warriors’ unfortunate and painful group stage elimination from the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations finals in Egypt.
ZIFA is equally heartbroken because the intention was for the team to go further than the group stage and make history for our country. All efforts had been harnessed towards that goal.

Deputy Minister of Information, Energy Mutodi has laid into the Zimbabwe national football team, the Warriors for the ignominious 4-0 loss to the Democratic Republic of Congo at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.
Writing on social media site Twitter, Mutodi further claimed that the Warriors coach, Sunday Chidzambga is a spent force. He said:
<blockquote>Warriors of shame: After courting President ED to fundraise for the team, we are shocked and displeased by their dismal performance.
It’s clear the coach is a spent force. Players are weak and helpless. It’s time for new players, new coach…of all teams ndombolo hit us hardest!</blockquote>
Zimbabwe finished bottom of Group A, with a 1-1 draw against Uganda as the only positive result.
The Warriors lost 1-0 to Egypt in the opening match of the season, then were humiliated 4-0 in their final game to seal their exit from the tournament.

Deputy Minister Calls For Warriors Coach Chidzambga To Be Sacked

Zimbabwe failed to progress to the Afcon knockout stages after a 4-0 loss to DRC on Sunday, 30 June. The loss has been attributed to injuries going into the game and a general poor show.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) said that Warriors players will get US$5 000 each following a meeting between the two parties.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has dismissed reports that the Warriors could withdraw their participation from the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt.
Reports suggest that ZIFA officials and players spent the greater part of Thursday night in marathon talks with no breakthrough.
ZIFA has since stated that Zimbabwe will not withdraw from AFCON. The statement reads:

Triangle FC Motivates Warriors By Playing On Players' Names

Warriors winger, Khama Billiat admitted that the strikers’ profligacy in front of goal is to blame in the 1-1 stalemate with Uganda in an Africa Cup of Nations match played on Wednesday night.
Billiat, who scored the only goal for Zimbabwe in two games vowed to keep working hard for the Warriors to get the results they want.
He was speaking in an interview with Goal.com soon after last night’s match. He said:
<blockquote>We as strikers let the nation down, we need to take more responsibility to help the nation by taking our chances, football is about scoring if you score you stand a chance.
During the match, I thought we were going to get a second goal which was going to make me feel happier, but at the end of the day, Denis (Onyango) won, this was not the result we wanted at the end of the day you can see that they won.
My teammates and the coaches can have more understanding and I’m getting to understand them better and better.

Zimbabwe has one point after two games with strikers under the spotlight. Captain Knowledge Musona missed three easy chances which may have led to victory and enhanced chances of reaching the knockout stages of the tournament.

Warriors striker, Kuda Mahachi, has denied claims that he disrespected coach Sunday Chidzambga after he allegedly said that he was better off enjoying his honeymoon than warming the bench in Egypt.
Mahachi, who has been overlooked for tonight’s clash against Uganda, got married earlier this month.
According to reports earlier today, Mahachi took to Instagram to vent his frustrations.
However, Mahachi has told Soccer24 that nothing of that sort happened. He said:
<blockquote>I’m not fighting with my coach, I’m happy here and nothing of that sort is happening.

Local sports journalist, Yvonne Manguda, left her Facebook followers seething with anger after she posted the wrong scoreline following a match played at the Africa Cup of Nations on Monday evening.
Ivory Coast beat South Africa 1-0 to take all the three points. However, due to a “typo” Mangunda posted on her page that the game ended 0-0.
After fans showed their disapproval, she later posted an apology;
<blockquote>Sorry for the typo, I typed with the phone on 2% then it switched off immediately. Went to Warriors training straight after the match, only now that I am at the hotel do I see post has typo and wrong scoreline.
Very sorry. Chargers and power banks not allowed at the stadiums. They are taken and thrown in the bin if found on your way in. Even headphones.

Journalist Posts Wrong Scoreline Of SA-Ivory Coast Match, Fans Unimpressed

Warriors coach, Sunday Chidzambga, said that a victory over the Cranes of Uganda in Wednesday’s match is non-negotiable.
Chidzambga believes that Uganda’s victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is now water under the bridge.
Uganda’s potent frontline holds no fear for “Mhofu” as he believes that his charges are good enough to compete against the Ugandans. Said Chidzambga:

Uganda national team coach Sebastien Desabre has warned his players to stay grounded following the 2-0 victory over DRC on Saturday in their first Afcon Group A match.
Uganda’s goals came courtesy of strikes by Patrick Kaddu and Emmanuel Okwi in either half to give the East African side their first win at the tournament since 1978.
Uganda faces Zimbabwe on Wednesday, 26 June at 7 PM Central Africa Time. Speaking after the win over DRC, Desabre said:

Following criticism directed towards Warriors captain Knowledge Musona for the 1-0 loss to Egypt, former Lancashire Steel player, Simbarashe Dhliwayo said that it is unfair to single him out for the defeat.
Musona was dispossessed within his own half, with the incident resulting in the goal that gave the Pharaohs the slender victory.
Speaking to The Sunday Mail, Dhliwayo, who is the coach of Red Yellow Blue Academy in Banket, said:
<blockquote>Egypt is not a small team and they were playing before their home crowd. We did well, given that they have high profile players in their team.

Warriors midfielder Tino Kadewere is eyeing success at the Africa Cup of Nations which roars into life in Egypt tonight.

Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) president Felton Kamambo has dismissed claims that the association diverted funds from well-wishers meant for Warriors’ supporters.
There were reports on Wednesday insinuating that a businessman, Kuda Tagwirei donated funds for 40 fans to travel to Egypt, with ZIFA officials giving the money to friends and relatives.
Kamambo told 263Chat that nothing of that sort ever happened. He said:
<blockquote>As Zifa, we never got money from anyone meant to fly the supporters to Egypt.
I have heard a number of accusations people saying we got money from well-wishers, the money we got ranging from the President’s donation on the night of the dinner, went straight to the fundraising committee.
As Zifa we never and will never handle any cent from the donated money. All we are doing is to tell the committee to pay for whatever we want paid for.</blockquote>
Kamambo said that the association is running around to ensure that a section of supporters travels to Egypt to cheer the Warriors.

Football website FourFourTwo has compiled a list of five questions which can act as a guide for those who want to know more about the Africa Cup Of Nations which starts tomorrow. Here is the guide:
Where is it being held?
The tournament will be hosted by Egypt from June 21 until July 19. Six venues across four cities will be used, with three stadia in Cairo and one each in Alexandria, Suez and Ismailia.
The opening match pitting Egypt versus Zimbabwe will be played at the 74,100-capacity Cairo International Stadium. The stadium will also host the final match.
What is the format?
Unlike with previous editions when 16 teams featured, the biennial tournament has been expanded to 24 teams.
Countries have been drawn into six groups of four and will face each group opponent once. The top two teams are guaranteed places in the knockout stages, while the four best third-place teams will also progress.
For the first time, the Africa Cup of Nations will be played in June/July rather than the traditional January/February months.

The expanded format has seen three nations qualify for the first time. Madagascar and Burundi have been drawn alongside each other in Group B, while Mauritania is in Group E.
