Business mogul Nigel Chanakira has said that he regrets selling his now-defunct Kingdom Bank to AfrAsia Bank Limited.
Chanakira said that the sale was prompted by the pressure he had due to a lot of mistakes and wrong partnerships along his road to success.
Speaking at the inaugural entrepreneurship expo organised by the Zimbabwe African Entrepreneur Association (ZAEA) in Harare last week where he was the main speaker, Chanakira said that he should have been smarter in the way he handled that particular incident. He added:
<blockquote>I should have just down-scaled it and turned it into a micro-finance enterprise or something like that before relaunching it, but there was just so much stress and too many shareholders and too many disputes, I had had enough of the corporate world and my battles are well known.</blockquote>
Afrasia Bank, formerly Kingdom Bank,<a href="https://www.techzim.co.zw/2015/02/afrasia-bank-formerly-kingdom-shuts-down/"> was in 2015 placed under liquidation</a> by the <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Reserve_Bank_of_Zimbabwe">Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe</a> after its shareholders surrendered their banking license.
Kingdom Bank was founded in 1994 and was in its prime representation of a clean indigenisation dream.

Nigel Chanakira Regrets Selling Kingdom Bank

United States billionaire Bill Gates’ charity, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation lost almost half a million dollars after the closure of AfrAsia Bank Zimbabwe in 2015. AfrAsia Bank, which was formerly Kingdom Bank closed down when the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe cancelled the bank’s operating licence in February 2015 after its major shareholder, AfrAsia Zimbabwe Holdings Limited voluntarily surrendered the banking licence.
The foundation lost $480 000, from the $5 million which had been donated to build low-cost houses for at least 480 families in 2010. Harare City Council’s deputy housing director Bridget Mandizha said:
<blockquote>We got $5 million and we used $3.8 million. We lost more than $480 000 when Kingdom Bank was shut down and we never recovered that. We did the best we could but we did not succeed.
They had promised to give us $20 000 a month but the bank closed before they could do that.</blockquote>
Mandizha however, said that council was satisfied with the houses which it managed to build. The project was initially supposed to have been done in Mbare but had to be moved to Dzivarasekwa due to political disturbances.  Mandizha added:
<blockquote>480 families have benefited from the 280 units we have built there. Apart from building super structures, there is state of the art infrastructure not found in co-operatives.
…there is a solar-powered borehole and we built an ECD class which is up to scratch for the community.
It was a slum that we upgraded and we have photos of children drinking water from shallow wells and now as they enjoy borehole water that is clean</blockquote>

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation loses $500 000 in Zim Bank

A survey by AfrAsia Bank has revealed that Zimbabweans are among some of the poorest citizens in Africa. According to the survey, Zimbabweans have an average wealth of $200 per person. This contrasts highly with citizens of Mauritius who were named the wealthiest in Africa. The Mauritians have an average wealth of $25 700 per person.
The report also notes that back around the year 2 000, Zimbabwe was one of the wealthiest countries in sub-Saharan Africa on a wealth per capita basis.
The survey attributed the decline to uncertainty about property ownership saying :
<blockquote>In Zimbabwe, business owners are unsure as to whether their businesses or property will still belong to them a year down the line, which creates a situation where no one will take the chance of investing in the country,
On-going political intimidation and the alleged fixing of elections in 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2013. The banning of the independent media in the early 2000s, which has created a situation where it is impossible for investors to tell what is happening there.</blockquote>

Zimbabwean citizens among Africa's poorest: Survey

The assets of <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/AfrAsia_Bank">AfrAsia Bank</a>, which was initially  <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Kingdom_Financial_Holdings_Limited">Kingdom Bank</a>, will be auctioned off by the Deposit Protection Corporation (DPC) in order to recover money owed to creditors.    However, the assets may take a while to be liquidated due to the ongoing cash shortages.
AfrAsia Bank had its licence cancelled by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe in February 2015, after the central bank had determined that the bank was not in a sound financial state.  AfrAsia bank was liquidated the following month and the time of its closure it had 12 branches countrywide.
The DPC  has hired Hammer and Tongues Auctioneers will be auctioning the commercial property of the bank.  This includes a double story building and a service station located in Msasa.
Liquidator Reggie Saruchera of Grant and Thornton in a message to creditors on  Wednesday said:
<blockquote>The third interim dividend is likely to be paid out in the first half of 2017 to concurrent creditors after all preferent creditors have been paid. The dividend will be distributed on a pro-rata basis depending on the rate of recovery and disposal of assets,</blockquote>

AfrAsia Bank assets to be auctioned off to recover creditors' money

The Deposit Protection Corporation (DPC) has paid out US$3,2 million out of US$6,4 million to clients of failed banks.
Depositors with US$1 000 or less in their accounts get all their funds while high net-worth clients and corporates are paid through the liquidation process on a pro-rata basis. Depositors in banks that closed prior to June 1, 2016 are compensated using the old cover limit of US$500. DPC chief executive officer Mr John Chikura told The Sunday Mail Business last week that compensations were progressing.
He also said all depositors from AfrAsia, Allied, Interfin, Royal, Genesis and Trust banks are welcome. Chikura said  funds are available and depositors only need to submit a claim form and they will reimburse them within five days via respective banks or mobile phone transfers.
