Sixteen-year-old Daphine Unah Jairos has returned home after undergoing successful heart surgery in India. Daphine had a severe heart problem that affected her breathing due to the closure of her valves. She previously received treatment in India in 2016, but the condition resurfaced recently, leading her to travel back to India on January 22 for the operation.
The National Oil Infrastructure Company of Zimbabwe (NOIC) and the Rotary Club of Chitungwiza funded Daphine’s trip and medical expenses. Upon her arrival at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, NOIC commercial director Ms. Christine Chikwaiti expressed joy, stating that Daphine was part of the group they sponsored in 2016 for treatment in India. She explained that when Daphine approached them this year seeking sponsorship for valve correction, they gladly supported her journey for extensive heart surgery. She said:

We are elated today to receive Daphine Jairos, who was part of the 2016 group that we sponsored to travel to India to get treatment.
She came back to us this year, saying she needed sponsorship to open up her valves. We helped to fund her travel to India for extensive heart surgery, so we are excited that it went well.

Mrs. Rose Peters, the secretary and foundation chairperson of the Rotary Club of Chitungwiza, mentioned that their organization assists children from all parts of Zimbabwe. She told <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/16-year-old-returns-home-after-successful-heart-surgery">The Sunday Mail:</a>

We do this by following the database at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals. From 2015, we have helped several children and they all succeeded besides one from Mutoko who did not make it.

Indictment on African Leaders
Daphine’s successful surgery and return home highlight the importance of strengthening healthcare systems in Zimbabwe and across Africa. It is concerning that many African leaders, especially political elites, often seek medical treatment abroad, spending significant amounts of money that is enough to capacitate local health institutions. This situation reflects a lack of investment in local healthcare institutions. As a result, many skilled healthcare professionals leave Africa for better working conditions and higher salaries in Europe, America, and Oceania. Africa, with its abundant natural resources, has the potential to excel in all sectors, including healthcare.
India’s healthcare sector has evolved significantly over time. Before independence in 1947, healthcare was primarily provided by private practitioners and charitable organizations, resulting in limited access, especially in rural areas. After independence, the government took steps to prioritize healthcare and initiated national health programs to address major health challenges.
In the 1990s, economic reforms opened the doors for private investment in healthcare, leading to the growth of private hospitals, diagnostic centres, and pharmaceutical companies. This expansion improved access to advanced medical technologies and enhanced healthcare services in urban areas. Now it is a destination for other nationalities, mainly from Africa.

Success Story Of 16-Year-Old Zimbabwean's Heart Surgery In India An Indictment On African Leaders

Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Health and Child Care has issued updates on the cholera outbreak that has bedevilled the Southern African region. In a report seen by Pindula News, the ministry said as of February 5, 2024, there have been 22,790 suspected cases of cholera, with 2,395 cases confirmed. The number of recoveries stands at 22,090, while there have been 71 confirmed deaths and 430 suspected deaths.
On February 4, there were 22,632 suspected cholera cases, with the same number of confirmed cases and 21,940 recoveries. The death toll remained at 71, with 428 suspected deaths. The Oral Cholera Vaccine (OCV) has been administered to 697,550 people as of February 3.
Earlier, on February 1, there were 22,105 suspected cases, 2,388 confirmed cases, and 21,378 recoveries. The death toll remained at 71, with 421 suspected deaths. By January 31, a total of 103,735 people had received the Oral Cholera Vaccine.
The situation on January 31 showed 21,835 suspected cholera cases, with 2,387 confirmed cases and 21,134 recoveries. The death toll remained at 71, with 416 suspected deaths.
On January 30, there were 21,640 suspected cases, 2,381 confirmed cases, and 20,951 recoveries. The death toll remained at 71, with 414 suspected cases.
Health experts emphasise that addressing the cholera outbreak requires a coordinated effort involving the health sector and active participation from the community.
Cholera situation across Africa
The cholera <a href="https://africacdc.org/news-item/communique-from-africa-cdc-on-the-southern-africa-development-community-sadc-extra-ordinary-virtual-summit-of-heads-of-state-and-government-on-the-cholera-situation-in-the-region/#:~:text=This%20meeting%20was%20held%20virtually,fight%20against%20the%20recurrent%20outbreaks.">situation in Africa is severe</a> and has been going on for a long time in many countries. From January 2023 to January 24, 2024 (which is 13 months), there have been a total of 252,934 reported cases of cholera and 4,187 deaths. This means that the case fatality rate (CFR) is 1.6%, which is the percentage of people who died out of the total number of cases. The reports come from 19 African Union Member States. The majority, about 72.5%, of these cases are from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. This indicates that the SADC region is particularly affected by the cholera outbreak in Africa.
In response to the cholera outbreaks, a meeting was held virtually among Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries on February 2. The participants expressed concern about the ongoing challenges in combating the recurrent outbreaks and discussed the progress made in addressing the situation.

Updates On Cholera Outbreak In Southern Africa: Zimbabwe Reports 22,790 Cholera Cases

Uganda’s firebrand opposition party leader Bobi Wine (real name Robert Kyagulanyi) has reportedly summoned International Criminal Court to investigate his bitter rival and the country’s president Yoweri Museveni and his top officials for human rights abuses ahead of this week’s election, Reuters reports.
The pop star turned politician reportedly submitted a 41 paged petition asking the Hague Court to investigate Museveni for incidences dating back to 2018 in which law enforcement officers were told to shoot to kill civilians.
The office of the ICC prosecutor reportedly confirmed receiving the petition and said they will go through it:
<blockquote>As we do with all such communications, we will analyse the materials submitted, as appropriate, in accordance with the Rome Statute and with full independence and impartiality</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Bobi Wine’s opponents said approaching the ICC is a desperate move. Said Uganda’s state minister for foreign affairs, Okello Oryem:

That is sheer desperation. (The opposition) have tried everything under the sun, they have failed. Now they are resorting to the ICC. We are a law abiding country, we are a peace loving country
</blockquote>
A submission to the ICC doesn’t necessarily mean the case will be investigated. The ICC receives a lot of similar petitions every year.

Health experts have indicated that the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) strain affecting Africa is mild compared to what has affected Europe and Asia.
COVID-19 Chief Coordinator in the Office of the President and Cabinet Dr Agnes Mahomva told Zimpapers radio division on Thursday that Africa in general, and Zimbabwe in particular, will not experience the severe cases as witnessed in Europe. She said:
<blockquote>A number of people do not suspect that they are positive before they are tested. They only realise after being tested that they are actually carrying the virus. They do not have any symptoms, everything is okay, but they still test positive.
In fact, science has actually indicated that the epidemic here in Africa seems to be attenuated. We are not going to have as severe cases as we saw in Europe, so that is very positive and encouraging.</blockquote>
One of the academic papers published by the USA’s Social Sciences Research Council on May 14, 2020, and done by two African researchers alluded to a weaker strain of COVID-19 in Africa.
Zimbabwe has as of 14 June 2020 recorded 383 coronavirus cases including 4 deaths and 54 recoveries.
The 27 cases recorded on Sunday were all in quarantine centres after returning from South Africa.

'Coronavirus Strain In Africa Seems To Be Weak'

An opinionist writing for the Insider has said social distancing is not sustainable for most African countries where most people are poor and many markets informal and people have to fend for that particular day’s bread on that same day.
In the lengthy article, which does not mention Zimbabwe, the columnist opined:
<blockquote>African countries have joined the rest of the world in imposing severe restrictions on human mobility in a bid to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.
With the rapid rise of infection rates which approached 1.3 million globally and 8 000 in Africa as of this writing (9 April) social distancing and other public health measures are crucial for reducing further contagion.
The immediate focus of policymakers on improving the capacity of health care systems to test, isolate, and treat patients has been appropriate considering the millions of lives at risk.
At the same time though, social distancing restrictions have disrupted the livelihoods of tens of millions, exposing vast populations to an acute financial shock.
Many countries, such as Nigeria and Cameroon, have introduced strict lockdown measures that closed business without sufficient mitigation measures to assist the affected individuals and households.
For the poor without the luxury of bank savings or a resort to credit cards, public health measures that cut their lifeline of daily income could appear to offer a cure that is as bad as the sickness.
Such measures, then, will also be highly ineffective, as people are more likely to disobey the law rather than stay at home and go hungry. Given these devastating potential consequences, it is ethically questionable to bar people from working without offering a means to support their basic needs.
Thankfully, Africa’s agrarian households—which make up more than half of the total population—will be comparatively insulated from potential food shortages as they produce most of their own consumption needs.
A disadvantage in normal times due to its low productivity, subsistence farming offers the benefit of self-reliance, shielding farmers from the immediate costs of trade restrictions induced by COVID-19.
Likewise, paid urban workers, most of whom work for the government or state enterprises, will face limited financial crises unless the provision of food supplies becomes severely strained or inflation skyrockets.
The first to feel the brunt of stay-at-home restrictions will be informal business owners and daily wage workers in the urban centers of Africa.
Self-employing and family-owned small enterprises in sectors such as retail trade, sewing, handiwork manufacturing, and taxi/motorcycle ride services, make up more than two-thirds of urban employment in Africa.
Tens of millions of Africans and their dependents rely on income from these businesses and will be unlikely to endure a lockdown for more than a few days.
Without robust government support, microentrepreneurs are unlikely to abide by the stay-at-home measures, creating risk for themselves and their communities.
In addition, since microenterprises use cash for businesses exchanges and deal with several customers daily, their return to business will undercut ongoing efforts to contain COVID-19.
In some cases, violations of these stay-at-home orders—caused by hunger and desperation—might lead to confrontations with the police, as happened in Lagos recently.
While microentrepreneurs are known for their resilience, they are also highly vulnerable to the economic shocks induced by COVID-19. Because they are so often unregistered and unorganized, they are unlikely to get immediate government support in the form of financial compensation or tax benefits.
Even in normal times, these businesses fly under the radar of government programs for policy support, which puts them at a disadvantage relative to medium-sized or large businesses.
African countries also have a history of cracking down on informal businesses during times of crisis. At the same time, most microentrepreneurs come from disadvantaged social segments, including women and ethnic and religious minorities.
Their powerlessness and fragmentation perhaps explain why they have received so little attention in the current debate on the economic costs of COVID-19.</blockquote>

The World Health Organisation regional director for Africa, Matshidiso Rebecca Moeti has warned countries that there is a chance the coronavirus pandemic might have a dramatic evolution on the continent, The Chronicle reports.
Moeti said this while encouraging African countries to intensify actions to fight the pandemic. Moeti said this to France24:
<blockquote>The situation is very worrying, with a dramatic evolution: an increase geographically in the number of countries and also an increase in the number of infections.</blockquote>

Africa could become a battleground between the United States of America and Iran as Tehran threatens to retaliate after the U.S. airstrike that killed the Iranian Quds Force commander, General Qassem Soleimani in Iraq on Friday.
According to Phillip Smyth, a Soref Fellow at The Washington Institute who studies Shia Islamist militarism, Iran may take its time before it retaliates and will choose targets to attack that will make it difficult for it to be identified as the aggressor. He said:
<blockquote>The Iranians are going to want to show that they have an influence on a global scale and they may look for low-hanging fruit or easier targets that they can go after.
And that may very well occur in Africa. And it could very well occur in North America or Europe or many other places.</blockquote>
Hezbollah, a terrorist organisation supported by Iran, has reportedly recruited and trained Nigerians for years.
Further, a June 2019 report by the British newspaper The Telegraph claims that Iranians were setting up terror cells in Africa under Soleimani’s direction and these cells may be active in Sudan, Chad, Ghana, Niger, The Gambia and the Central African Republic.

The President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, has sent his condolences to President Emmerson Mnangagwa following the passing on of Zimbabwe’s founding leader, Robert Gabriel Mugabe. Jinping described Mugabe as an outstanding statesman who contributed immensely to the enhancement of the friendship between China and Zimbabwe which subsists today.
Mugabe died in the early hours of Friday in a hospital in Singapore where he has been receiving treatment. We present Jinping’s message in full below.

Zimbabwe has been ranked among the worst corrupt countries in the world by Transparency International in its 2018 index. The index was released last week
Out of a total 180 countries, Zimbabwe is the number 160. Zimbabwe’s score out of 100 is 22. African countries worse than Zimbabwe include Angola, DRC, Burundi, Chad, Libya, South Sudan, Congo, and Somalia (ranked worst corrupt country in the world).
Commenting on the 2018 rankings, TPI said:
<blockquote> the continued failure of most countries to significantly control corruption is contributing to a crisis of democracy around the world.
“With many democratic institutions under threat across the globe – often by leaders with authoritarian or populist tendencies – we need to do more to strengthen checks and balances and protect citizens’ rights,”</blockquote>

Zimbabwe Ranked Among Worst Corrupt Countries In The World

SADC executive secretary Stergomena Lawrence Tax said African countries should take the blame for signing unbalanced deals with China.
She said this while addressing the media Friday after a two-day visit to Harare where she had occasion to tour the regional body’s peace keeping centre and Interpol Regional Bureau. Said Tax:
<blockquote>History can repeat itself if we allow it to. The only way is to be prepared when we get to the negotiation table. If you are not prepared, you should not blame the Chinese. You should not blame the Americans or Europeans. You should blame yourself…there is no reason to worry about China.</blockquote>

African Countries Should Take Blame For Unbalanced Chinese Deals- SADC Boss

President Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday said African leaders should fight corruption within their countries.
Mnangagwa made the remarks upon arrival back home from the 11th Extraordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The Extraordinary Session deliberated on proposed reforms to transform the organisation into a highly efficient institution. Said Mnangagwa:
<blockquote>It is necessary that we all agree on fighting corruption. Africa is one entity. We must work towards creating Africa as one economy because we passed the African Continental (Free) Trade Area, which means the entire 1,2 billion market is now one. We must all fight corruption in our respective jurisdictions.</blockquote>
His remarks come when Zimbabwe has over the years been ranked among the countries with high levels of corruption.
Former president Robert Mugabe, at some point, claimed that the Southern African country h<a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/obert-mpofu-refuses-answer-questions-missing-15-billion-parly-says-will-not-presided-temba-mliswa/">ad lost US$15 billion potential diamond money through corruption in diamond mines.</a>
Since 1980 when Zimbabwe attained independence from Britain, scores of government officials have been reported, accused and or arrested for engaging in corrupt activities.
It remains to be seen if Mnangagwa will effectively address the rot that has destroyed Zimbabwe’s prospects of recovery after collapsing two decades ago.

Mnangagwa Urges African Leaders To Fight Corruption In Their Countries

United States president Donald Trump stunned lawmakers from his own country when he referred to Haiti and African countries as “s***hole countries.” The US president who was having a meeting on immigration with lawmakers at the White House questioned the lawmakers on why people from Africa and Haiti were being allowed to visit the United States. Trump, said that his country should instead let in more people from countries such as Norway, whose prime minister visited him on Wednesday at the White House.
The Washington Post and CNN television confirmed that Trump said:
<blockquote>Why are we having all these people from s—hole countries come here?</blockquote>
The White House neither confirmed nor denied that Trump had used crude language to describe Haiti and Africa, although it released its own statement. Part of the statement reads:
<blockquote>Certain Washington politicians choose to fight for foreign countries, but President Trump will always fight for the American people. The President will only accept an immigration deal that adequately addresses the visa lottery system and chain migration — two programs that hurt our economy and allow terrorists into our country. Like other nations that have merit-based immigration, President Trump is fighting for permanent solutions that make our country stronger by welcoming those who can contribute to our society, grow our economy and assimilate into our great nation. He will always reject temporary, weak and dangerous stopgap measures that threaten the lives of hardworking Americans, and undercut immigrants who seek a better life in the United States through a legal pathway.</blockquote>

Trump Calls Africa and Haiti "Sh**hole" Countries, Questions Why They Are Allowed To Enter USA

Former   <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Premier_Soccer_League" target="_blank">Castle Premier Soccer League</a> champions <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Dynamos_Football_Club" target="_blank">Dynamos</a> have been ranked the best clu8b in the Southern African region by Football Database,  a website which ranks world football.  The Glamour Boys were ranked 12th in Africa and 253 in the world.  Southafr5ican giants  Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns were ranked 13th and 14th respectively in Africa, meaning that they are 2nd and 3rd in Southern Africa.  FC Platinum was the second best-ranked team in Zimbabwe.
Football Database uses a special rating system which takes into account past achievements as well as present form.  This might explain why Dynamos have been rated highly even though their last two seasons were not spectacular by any means.
