The African Development Bank and NMB Bank Limited Zimbabwe (NMB) have signed a $15 million Trade Finance Transaction Guarantee Facility to unlock trade finance opportunities for Zimbabwean small and medium-sized enterprises and those in agri-business and trade distribution value chains.
The signing took place on 7 March at NMB Bank Headquarters in Harare.
Moono Mupotola, African Development Bank Country Manager, and Gerald Gore, NMB Bank Chief Executive Officer attended. The African Development Bank’s board approved the project in November 2023.
The facility offers up to 100% coverage to confirming Banks, effectively mitigating non-payment risks linked to NMB Bank’s trade transactions on a per-transaction basis.
It is tailored to support trade between Zimbabwe and other African countries and with overseas markets by significantly diminishing the risk for international financial institutions actively engaging in trade finance activities with Zimbabwean businesses.
Country Manager Mupotola attended the signing. She said:

The African Development Bank is committed to supporting the development of the private sector in Zimbabwe.
This is a significant step forward in supporting the growth and competitiveness of Zimbabwean businesses.
By mitigating risk and facilitating access to trade finance, we are empowering SMEs and local corporates to participate more actively in regional and international trade.

SMEs often face challenges in accessing trade finance compared to their larger counterparts. This initiative directly addresses this gap, fostering a more vibrant and inclusive business environment in Zimbabwe.
Gerald Gore, CEO of NMB Bank emphasized the agreement’s importance for Zimbabwe’s economic development. He said:

This facility will be instrumental in enabling NMB to provide crucial trade finance support to a wider range of Zimbabwean businesses.
This will not only unlock new trade opportunities but also contribute to job creation and economic growth.

In December 2023, the Bank’s board of directors approved a US$20 million trade finance line of credit to Central Africa Building Society (CABS).
The project aligns with the Bank’s country strategy paper for Zimbabwe 2024-2026, which prioritises private sector development.
It is also aligned with several priorities of the Zimbabwe Vision 2030, which aims to transform Zimbabwe into a prosperous and empowered upper-middle-income society by 2030.

AfDB Approves US$15 Million Facility For NMB Bank Zimbabwe

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected that the Zimbabwean economy will this year contract by 10,4%, much higher than <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/04/16/zimbabwes-economy-to-contract-by-7-4-imf/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">its earlier prediction of 7,4%. </a>
The international financial institution also expects the annual inflation rate to close the year at 495% and predicts an economic rebound of 4,6% in 2021.
In in its new World Economic Outlook titled A Long and Difficult Ascent released during the current Annual Spring Meetings in the United States, the Bretton Woods institution said:
<blockquote>In 2019 Zimbabwe authorities introduced the Real-Time Gross Settlement dollar, later renamed the Zimbabwe dollar, and are in the process of re-denominating their national accounts statistics. Current data are subject to revision.</blockquote>
This comes as Zimbabwe’s statistics agency, Zimstat has reported that the country’s year on year continued on a downward trend in September.
Zimbabwe’s Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Professor Mthuli Ncube has however dismissed IMF’s projections as mere opinion.
He, however, admitted that the country was in the negative, like “all the economies around the world” citing the coronavirus pandemic as the causal factor.
In response to questions by Zimbabwe Independent at a cabinet event on Wednesday, Ncube suggested that a recent “assessment shows that the situation is not as bad as initially thought.” He added:
<blockquote>We had projected a growth of -4,5%. Our teams are busy on the ground again trying to further analyse that growth.
We also have our own numbers. We have got our own batch of statistics — we have got the central bank and Treasury who look after these numbers. These numbers are not imposed on countries by the way. It’s an opinion by just one institution out there, albeit, an important institution.</blockquote>

IMF Paints Gloomy Picture On Zimbabwe's Economy

African Development Bank, in its latest  African Economic Outlook 2020 report has said there is room for Zimbabwe’s economy to recover from the socio-economic woes bedevilling the country if the government pay attention to its policies, the Chronicle reports.
The report which the publication was quoting reads in part:
<blockquote>Zimbabwe can emerge from the current health and economic crisis strongly. The country’s vast natural resources, public infrastructure still in relatively good condition, and a skilled labour force give the country an opportunity to join supply chains in Africa and increase trade within the context of the African Continental Free Trade Area. Coupled with policy responses to restore stability in the foreign exchange market and control inflation, the economy could modestly recover in 2021.</blockquote>
The same report projected that if the COVID-19 pandemic doesn’t drag on for a long time, Africa’s GDP would shrink by 1.7%:
<blockquote>If the pandemic is of short duration so that countries can lift lockdowns and other severe containment measures by July, real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Africa is projected to contract by 1,7 percent in 2020. Moreover, with a 1,7 percent GDP contraction, employment is projected to decline by 24,6 million jobs in 2020, and with a 3,4 percent GDP contraction, up to 30 million jobs could be lost.</blockquote>
The report, however, reiterates that if the pandemic is not contained soon enough, things could be bad for Africa as the projected job losses could soar by approximately 50%:
<blockquote>In 2021, those numbers would increase respectively by 34 million and 49,2 million as GDP growth continues to fall below population growth. The most affected economies are those with poor healthcare systems, those that rely heavily on tourism, international trade, and commodity exports, and those with high debt burdens and high dependence on volatile international financial flows.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe is going through a dire economic downfall that has prompted the government to introduce a cocktail of measures to try and arrest the runaway exchange rate which includes suspending trading at the stock exchange and prohibiting some mobile money transactions.

Zimbabwe's Economy Could Recover In 2021 If There Is Policy Responses To Restore Stability In The Foreign Exchange Market - AfDB

The City of Harare will install paid water Kiosks and drill boreholes to benefit dry suburbs like Mabvuku and Tafara after the African Development Bank (AfDB), extended a $16 million facility to the council, The Herald reports.
The Acting Harare Water director Engineer Edmore Chawasemerwa, said:
<blockquote>
From the money that we have been promised by African Development Bank, it is mainly targeting to assist vulnerable communities. So, we are going to drill 25 boreholes in Harare South, then 20 each in Mabvuku, Tafara and Caledonia
We are going to develop boreholes in such a way that, for the beneficiaries to access water, one has to be in possession of a swipe card as a sign to show that one has paid to access the water,” he said.
People should know that water is not for free, they have to pay for it. Water (from the boreholes) will need to be treated and when the borehole malfunctions, it will need to be attended to and this needs money.

Harare City Council To Drill Boreholes And Install Water Kiosks In Mabvuku And Tafara

The African Development Bank said it’s working with Zimbabwe’s government to find a “sustainable solution” to settle its debt arrears and enable the state to start borrowing again.

<div class="softwall" data-position="1">According to the bank’s country manager Damoni Kitabire, the AfDB, which Zimbabwe owes $600 million, has reached a consensus with other lenders including the International Monetary Fund and World Bank about how the state should settle its dues.</div>
