Zimbabwe’s ambassador to South Africa, David Hamadziripi, has appealed to his compatriots who reside in the neighbouring country to respect its laws.
Speaking in Pretoria on Thursday, Hamadziripi said not all Zimbabweans residing in South Africa are involved in criminal activities. He said:

Clearly, it is like in any basket, you will get bad apples. There are those focused on them.
We have thousands of Zimbabweans making positive contributions in South Africa.
We don’t hear much about them. We hear (only) about those who tarnish the name of Zimbabwe.
In our country, we want everybody to respect the law. We also expect them to respect the laws of South Africa.

Hamadziripi said Zimbabwe was worried about the ill-treatment of its citizens by South Africans. He said:

Our route is through the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) to raise our concerns.
This is not the right thing to prevent people from accessing public services.
We have raised that with Dirco about such treatment. We wish those practices to stop.
Regarding those who were recently evicted from a building in Johannesburg, we interacted with authorities, including the police.
Our government has provided funding to assist those people who wish to return home.
Where our people need assistance, we have mobilised to help them.

SA: Ambassador Hamadziripi Says Majority Of Zimbabweans Are Law-abiding

Three Zimbabwean nationals were burnt to death in Chavani Village outside Elim on Saturday, reported <a href="https://www.groundup.org.za/article/three-zimbabweans-burnt-to-death-in-elim/">GroundUp</a>.
The three Zimbabweans had been accused of stealing cables and solar panels.
Following the attack, about 200 immigrants fled their homes into the bush or other villages. Some were forced out of their houses by vigilante groups.
Makhado police spokesperson Sergeant Tshifhiwa Irene Radzilani said the three Zimbabweans “were burnt beyond recognition”. 
Police have opened murder cases but no arrests have been made.
Malume Chinabwa, from the Kagisano (seTswana for living together harmoniously) programme, run by the Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) in Elim and Musina said:

Since Saturday more than 200 foreigners – Zimbabweans, Mozambicans and Malawians – have been calling me for assistance.
During the day, they try to visit townships where they are not known, in search of food but spend the night in bushes.
</blockquote>
Elim resident Francis Thiba told GroundUp that at about 6 PM on Saturday a group of youths, including women, came to his residence.
He said his wife and three children were ordered to leave and they fled to the bush. Police later rescued them the same day.
Thiba was beaten on the head and in the face before he was rescued by Waterval police at about 7 PM who took him to Elim hospital.
He was discharged on Tuesday and joined his family at Waterval police station, where they had sheltered for three days.
Thiba, who has been living in Shirley village, Elim, for over ten years, has been in South Africa since 2000.
He said they are prepared to leave for Zimbabwe, but he has no money for transport.
Meanwhile, police have called on the community not to take the law into their hands.

Three Zimbabweans Burnt  Beyond Recognition In South Africa

Note: There has been a lot of conversation on xenophobia against Zimbabweans in South Africa. Some even say Zimbabweans don’t have any hostile attitudes against foreigners in their country and so wonder why South Africans do. This 1995 article demonstrates that xenophobia is a global phenomenon and problem and that Zimbabweans are perpetrators or at least were perpetrators just as much as they are victims now.

FORMER Mozambican refugees who settled among villagers in the Mandeya area in Manicaland are being terrorised by locals who are demanding that the refugees should go back to their country.
Although some of the refugees have been pressurised to leave, others vowed not to go anywhere. They claimed to have bought the pieces of land they occupied from some headmen.
“I bought the land I am on with my family in 1983, for $40 from the then headman, and I do not intend to move, no matter what,” vowed Simon Ncube, a father of four.
The headman who is alleged to have sold the land to Ncube and many other ex-refugees died in 1988.
“I just cannot go away leaving my parents’ graves here,” was the reason given by Theophilus Time for being not too willing to return home in Mozambique.
The civil war in Mozambique which started in 1975 just after the country gained independence from the colonial Portuguese saw millions of Mozambicans take refuge in neighbouring countries. A reported 140,000 refugees were accommodated at the five refugees camp in this country while an unknown substantial number went to work in the farms and towns and some settled in the communal areas.
A peace accord signed in Rome in 1992 resulted in the repatriation of the refugees under a United Nations sponsored programme. However, a number of refugees, especially those who had settled in the villages, decided to be permanent residents of host countries. It is these who now say they are being terrorised by locals to force them to go back to their country.
Speaking to Moto‘s correspondent, the Mozambicans said that some have had their homes burnt while others were not allowed to fetch water from the boreholes and wells which were mostly sunk by non-governmental organisations; and were called names among many other instances of xenophobic harassment.
Cleopas Billiart said that he lost his property worth around $500 when his hut was set on fire when a girl from a family in the area eloped to his son who works at a tea estate in Honde Valley.
Billiart said that the girl’s relatives and other villagers accused him of casting “muti” to make the girl, Ration Murapa, fall for his son.
“I have been told that I will not know any peace until I have undone the “muti“, said Billiart who denied knowledge of such muti.
Billiart said that before this event the villagers had been telling him to go back to his country and asking him what he still wanted in this country when the war was over in Mozambique.
“I bought the land I live on and I am entitled to stay here for as long as I wish,” he said. However, two families who lived near Billiart are said to have left for Mozambique after their huts were burnt reportedly for occupying grazing land although they had been there since 1983.
Mario Sidhule said he had to fetch borehole water in the small hours of the morning when everyone would be asleep for fear of being assaulted. We get beaten up if found fetching water from the boreholes and wells. They tell us to go and fetch water from Mozambique,” said Sidhule.
Derogatory names like “Masena”, “Mabwidi” and “Mabhurandaya” are said to be commonly used to refer to the former refugees.
The Mozambicans also said that they did not get drought relief food nor are they benefitting from the present grain loan scheme. Many are having to go and search for work at the Eastern Highlands Tea Estates.
This correspondent spoke to some of the villagers alleged to be ill-treating the ex-refugees. “We allowed the Mozambicans to occupy our grazing land on the understanding that they would move when the war is over in their country but it appears many of them want to be here forever and we can not accept that,” said one head-man who declined to be named.
Samuel Chahwanda, a villager, said: “Our children are being resettled far from their places of origin because their land has been occupied by people from Mozambique, we don’t want that.”

Members of Operation Dudula in Cape Town have given six factories in Witsand, outside Atlantis, seven days to fire illegal immigrants allegedly working in their businesses.
About 150 members of the group which is accused of xenophobia and Afrophobia in South Africa marched to factories on Wednesday.
They handed over a memorandum including a demand that the owners remove the immigrants as their employees.
The Operation Dudula members warned the businesses that if they failed to fire foreign nationals within the seven days, they will rope in the relevant law enforcement agencies or the Department of Home Affairs to enforce their immigration policy. Read the memorandum:

Our people are not working and they are unemployed, yet our factories are employing foreigners.
Small businesses in our communities are also owned by them; the rate of crime is high.

Operation Dudula member Nkululeko Watermayer said they wanted to “reclaim back jobs”.
PC Revalidation managing director Dale Lewis confirmed the visit adding that the group insisted that the company stops employing “illegal” immigrants. Said, Lewis:

They came to our business a few weeks ago, there were about ten of them. They gave us a letter insisting that we stop employing illegal immigrants and develop South African youth. I was horrified.
This time there were about 150 people, they gave our production manager about 50 CVs and another memorandum.
The Dudula leader group is horribly misinformed and should be embarrassed by their selection of our business for their protest. We do not employ illegal immigrants.
Of the approximately 42 staff we have, six foreign nationals we have all have papers allowing them legal employment in South Africa.
We only employ people living in the greater Atlantis, Mamre/Witsand area and the business is 80% black women-owned.
We promote learning and have had engineers completing their engineering diplomas by doing their in-service training in our business.
We believe this is the best we can do to develop South African youth within the financial constraints of our business.
The foreign nationals that we employ all live in and contribute to the community.

Lewis said the business reserved the right to employ anyone who is legally allowed to be employed in South Africa adding they will take legal action should any further attempts be made to intimidate their workers.

Operation Dudula Gives Ultimatum To Factories To Fire "Illegal Immigrants"

South Africa’s Police Minister Bheki Cele on Sunday cautioned residents of Alexandra, a township in the Johannesburg Metropolitan area, against blaming foreign nationals for crime in the area.
Cele and senior police officials were in the township on Sunday, after at least six community members were shot dead in separate incidents of crime, on Thursday night.
During a community meeting held at a local stadium, some community members accused foreign nationals of fueling crime in the area.
Tshepiso Makwela, one of the several residents from the township who believe that foreign nationals are the main drivers of crime in the area and in the rest of the country, said:
<blockquote>
If you can go out right now in Alex, on each and every single corner, there’s someone selling drugs.
And when you find the person supplying the kid, it’s always a foreign national.
So these people are doing a lot of harm, instead of a lot of good.
</blockquote>
However, Cele denied the claim, saying available data suggests otherwise. He said:

We’ve got 145 000 criminals that are in correctional services as we speak in South Africa.
18 000 of them are foreign nationals, which means the majority remain South African.
</blockquote>
Cele called upon Alexandra residents to partner with the police to identify and report criminals, regardless of their nationality.
On 6 April this year, Zimbabwean national Elvis Nyathi was brutally murdered by locals in Diepsloot, another township in Johannesburg for not having a passport.

SA Police Minister Cautions Alex Community Against Blaming Crime On Foreigners

The seven men accused of killing Zimbabwean national Elvis Nyathi will return to court in South Africa on Thursday.
Nyathi (43) died after he was beaten and set on fire by a violent anti-immigrant mob in Diepsloot, Johannesburg on 6 April this year.
The Zimbabwean was attacked at a time when Diepsloot residents were protesting over the high crime levels in the area which some locals had blamed on foreign nationals.
In the wake of Nyathi’s death, seven men were arrested and charged with murder as well as attempted murder, kidnapping, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, robbery with aggravating circumstances and extortion.
They made their first appearance in court in April and later in May when they were granted bail of R3 000 each.
Proceedings were postponed to this Thursday for further investigations.

7 Men Accused Of Killing Elvis Nyathi Return To Court

A South African public interest law organisation, SECTION27, has launched an application in the Gauteng High Court to stop discriminatory practices that deny immigrant women and their children state health care.
SECTION27 approached the court after several immigrants and undocumented women and children were denied access to free healthcare in South Africa over the past few years.
In December 2019, two-year-old Sibusiso Ncube died of poisoning after he was refused treatment at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.
Sibusiso’s Zimbabwean mother had failed to instantly produce the child’s birth certificate or pay R5000, according to an affidavit in the court case.
Umunyana Rugege, executive director of SECTION27, said the case of Sibusiso Ncube was not an isolated incident. Said Rugege:

Since 2013, SECTION27 has been repeatedly approached by pregnant migrant women and children under six, who have been denied access to free health services.
This is perpetuated through discriminatory subordinate laws and practices.
They have routinely been denied access to health care services, or they are pressured into signing acknowledgements of debt and undertakings to pay for services.
</blockquote>
SECTION27 is seeking an order that compels the Minister of Health to issue a circular to all provincial health departments recording that all pregnant or lactating women, and children under six, who are not members of medical aid schemes and who have not come to South Africa to obtain health care, be entitled to free health services at all public health institutions.
The application is supported by the Jesuit Refugee Service, The Southern African HIV Clinicians Society, and Doctors Without Borders; all are expected to file affidavits soon.
The respondents — the MEC and Gauteng health department head, the Minister and Director-General of Health — have 15 days to file notices of opposition.

Court Action Launched To Stop Immigrants Being Denied Free Healthcare In SA

The seven South African men who were arrested in connection with the murder of Zimbabwean man Elvis Nyathi in Diepsloot last month were each granted R3 000 bail at the Randburg Magistrate Court in South Africa on Friday.
In granting the accused men bail, magistrate Hleziphi Mkhasibe said the State was failing to show beyond any reasonable doubt what part each of them had played in the murder of Nyathi.
The seven men are Cedric Raseala (42), Baron Mashele(31), Godfrey Mahlo (31), Thomas Serebane (53), Phumuduza Tshirangwana (38), Thabo Makgatho (32) and Puleng Chipape (34). Their case was postponed to 7 July.
The men have been charged with murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, kidnapping, attempted murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and extortion.
Initially, 14 suspects were arrested but the other seven were later released due to a lack of evidence.
Speaking to South African media after bail was granted, Nyathi’s cousin, Mphathisi Ndlovu said:

We don’t understand why the court decides to give bail to people who (allegedly) killed someone in a brutal way. As the family we are scared.
</blockquote>
Nyathi (43), a father of four children, worked as a gardener in Johannesburg’s affluent suburbs but lived in Diepsloot, a slum area.
He was stoned and then burnt to death by a vigilante group a few hours after the leader of Operation Dudula, an anti-immigrant movement, had visited the area.
Last month, South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned xenophobia in his country. In his weekly newsletter, Ramaphosa wrote:

It is deeply disturbing how the recent incidents of anti-foreigner sentiment in parts of the country echo our apartheid past.
We have seen people being stopped on the street by private citizens and being forced to produce identification to verify their immigration status.
We have seen some political leaders making unscientific statements about immigrants to exploit people’s grievances for political gain.
The events in the Gauteng township of Diepsloot last week were a tragedy.
In the course of a single weekend, seven people were killed, sparking protests.
This loss of life is deplorable, as is the killing of a fellow African from Zimbabwe allegedly at the hands of vigilantes.
Crime is a serious problem in this country.

Elvis Nyathi's Alleged Killers Granted R3 000 Bail Each

The regional coordinator of Operation Dudula in Rustenburg, Rollance Mabula, said that their members are patriotic, and not xenophobic as alleged in some quarters.
The anti-migrant group was expected to launch its North West branch in Rustenburg on Wednesday.
The vigilante-like group claims it is targeting drug dens, unregistered businesses and undocumented foreign nationals who they accuse of engaging in criminal activities and stealing jobs from South Africans. Said Mabula:

We are having a problem with illegal immigrants occupying job positions that are supposed to be occupied by South Africans.
How should I feel when I see people from out of this country coming to make our children prostitutes here?
</blockquote>
Members of Operation Dudula sing songs that have derogatory lyrics to refer to foreigners but Mabula insists the group is not xenophobic.

We Are Not Xenophobic, We Are Patriotic, Says Operation Dudula Coordinator

A little-known Zimbabwean opposition political party, the Freedom Of Rights Under Sovereign (FORUS), has condemned xenophobia and Afrophobia in South Africa.
FORUS president Manyara Munyenziwa said that the tension between South Africans and Zimbabweans is unnecessary as the two countries have a common cultural heritage, languages and history. Munyenziwa said:
<blockquote>
FORUS party is deeply concerned about the unchecked people to people tension between the two sister Republics of Zimbabwe and South Africa.
We are simply geographically separated only by the Limpopo River, but have a richly shared and common cultural heritage, languages and history.
Unfortunately, the skewed performance of the economies of both countries, one seemingly doing better than the other, has prompted massive migration of documented and undocumented Zimbabweans into South Africa itself a melting pot of racial inequalities, a legacy of the iniquitous apartheid ideology and governments before independence in 1994.

She also said South Africa should be proud of itself as it is considered by Africans the last bastion of freedom and civil liberties and therefore it must eradicate all manifestations of Afrophobia and xenophobia.

FORUS Adds Voice On South Africa Xenophobia, Afrophobia

Community leaders in South Africa’s volatile Diepsloot township have absolved Zimbabweans in the shooting to death of two people in the area on Friday.
In a statement, councillors Julius Maake of Ward 95 and Abraham Mabuke of Ward 113 said the two victims were shot by known assailants who are South Africans. Read the statement:

We can confirm that 3 people got shot by known people. 2 died on the scene and the 3rd one sustained injuries. The third person was transported to the hospital for treatment under police guard.
It is important to inform the community that this incident has nothing to do with foreign nationals. Police are following positive leads that will end in arrests.
We are therefore appealing to our community members together with all leaders to give space for law enforcement agencies to deal with this matter without any interference.
In due course, a report will be given. Working together we can build a better society.

The shootings occurred just over two weeks after Zimbabwean domestic worker Elvis Nyathi was killed by a vigilante group in Diepsloot.
Nyathi was abducted, tortured and killed in cold blood before his body was set on fire by the assailants.
Seven suspects appeared in court on Friday facing charges of murder, attempted murder, assault with intent to cause bodily harm and abduction.
They were all remanded in custody to Monday next week.

Two People Shot Dead In Diepsloot, Foreigners Not Involved in Shooting

Zimbabwe’s ambassador to South Africa, David Hamadziripi, was heckled by Zimbabweans when he attempted to make remarks at a memorial service of Elvis Nyathi, at the Underground Hillbrow Theatre on Thursday.
Nyathi was brutally killed by a vigilante group in Johannesburg’s Diepsloot township on Wednesday last week.
Hamadziripi had to leave the hall as some Zimbabweans attending the event booed him, claiming that the ZANU PF-led Government is to blame for Nyathi’s death.
Millions of Zimbabweans are living in South Africa doing menial jobs and earning meagre wages after being forced to migrate to the neighbouring due to prolonged economic challenges at home.
Speaking soon after the event, Hamadziripi said the Zimbabwean Government is engaging South Africa to secure the safety of Zimbabweans. He said:

In situations like this, there would always be comments that are made … The government of Zimbabwe is doing all it can.
It’s engaging the South African government in order to secure the safety of our nationals in this country.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Peter Moshosho, a South African citizen and chairperson of Africa Simunye, apologised on behalf of his compatriots for Nyathi’s murder. He said:

Generally, I would like to apologize to Zimbabweans because we are not expecting as South Africans that thugs in South Africa can kill our fellow black brothers in South Africa.
So, that’s why I’m saying we really apologize for that. I’m a Zimbabwean, I’m a South African, I’m a Mozambican, I’m Sotho, I’m a Nigerian. Africa must be one and we want one currency.

Nyathi (43) worked in Fourways in the Johannesburg metropolitan region as a domestic worker.
He was dragged from his home last week on Wednesday night by a mob in Diesploot and viciously assaulted.
The group later necklaced him with an old tyre before setting it alight in the street, a few metres from his home.

Zimbabwe Ambassador To SA Booed At Slain Elvis Nyathi's Memorial Service

The distraught mother of a Zimbabwean national Elvis Nyathi who was brutally murdered in South Africa last week for not having a passport said it will be difficult to find closure on the tragedy.
Speaking to Chronicle on Thursday night in Nkulumane 12 where mourners are gathered for the funeral, the late Nyathi’s mother Sithembile Sibanda said:

I don’t know why they killed my son. Elvis just wanted to fend for his family and was doing so legally.
Now my son is no more and I won’t even be able to see his body yet he left Zimbabwe alive. He has left behind three little kids and a wife. What did I do to deserve this?
</blockquote>
Sibanda thanked President Emmerson Mnangagwa for according her son a State-assisted funeral. She said:

We are very grateful to the President for what he has done for us. It takes a huge load from our shoulders.
</blockquote>
A memorial service for Nyathi was held at the Underground Hillbrow Theatre in Johannesburg, South Africa on Thursday.
Mourners condemned Operation Dudula leader Nhlanhla Lux for inciting his compatriots to turn against migrants claiming that they were taking their jobs and also involved in criminal activities.
A representative of the Julius Malema-led Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), who was wearing the party’s regalia, said a black African is not a foreigner in South Africa. He said:

The real foreigners are the whites but the likes of Nhlanhla Lux are failing to confront them, instead, they run after a mere gardener.
</blockquote>
Speaking on behalf of the family, Mphathi Ndlovu, a cousin to the late Nyathi, said:

We are not a vengeful family but we are saddened, Elvis was a man of peace, a simple guy, leaving a simple life.
We do not believe that this was done by the generality of South Africans but it’s just an act of a single individual who must somehow be dealt with.

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Deputy Minister David Musabayana has urged Zimbabweans who migrated to South Africa in search of jobs over the years to return home claiming that the economy has recovered.
Musabaya said this while responding to Binga North MP Prince Dubeko Sibanda (CCC), who wanted to know what the government was doing to protect Zimbabweans experiencing xenophobic attacks in South Africa. Said Musabayana:

The xenophobic attacks in SA against foreigners (Zimbabweans in particular) are not a reflection of South Africa.
Our embassy in that country is engaging with the South African government and its relevant stakeholders to deal with the matter.
As a country, we are focused on protecting our citizens’ interests in that country and elsewhere.
We have cordial relations with South Africa. We will also continue to assist those in need through our consulate in that country.
Recently, SA issued a statement saying what some of the citizens were doing was not a reflection of its government.
What happened was a criminal matter and soon those attacks on our citizens will be over. 
We have grown the economy and our people can now start to come back.
In fact, very few people will be going to foreign lands for job hunting because Zimbabwe has registered economic growth.

Marondera Central legislator, Caston Mateu (CCC) also called on the Government to approach the Southern African Development Community (SADC) over the matter.
However, Musabaya said Zimbabwe cannot hold South Africa accountable for xenophobia as it is not Pretoria’s policy.

"Come Back Home", Govt Tells Zimbabweans Under Xenophobic Attack In SA

The family and friends of the murdered Zimbabwean national Elvis Nyathi will gather in his memory in Hillbrow on Thursday afternoon.
Nyathi (43) was killed and burnt by vigilantes in Diepsloot who were moving from door to door looking for undocumented foreign nationals following a spate of armed robberies and murders in the area.
Nyathi’s brother Godknows, confirmed the father of four will be laid to rest in Zimbabwe this weekend. He said:

All the paperwork has been completed, we will be holding a memorial service on Thursday afternoon and we will then leave for Zimbabwe.

Godknows denied reports that his brother’s widow Nomsa Tshuma had fled Diepsloot.
He said his sister-in-law is now in the care of relatives who could not leave her alone in the home she shared with her late husband.
Meanwhile, President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Wednesday granted Nyathi a state-assisted funeral.
In a statement, the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Misheck Sibanda said:

Elvis Nyathi's Family To Hold Memorial Service In Hillbrow

Leader of the Front for Economic Emancipation in Zimbabwe (FEEZ), Godfrey Tsenengamu, says his party intends to mobilise masses to take control of South Africa-owned mining company, Zimplats.
Zimplats is owned by South African conglomerate, Impala Platinum (Implats).
Tsenengamu said the seizure of Zimplats will be in retaliation to the ongoing attacks against foreigners and foreign-owned businesses by vigilantes in South Africa.
The former ZANU PF youth league political commissar warned ZANU PF against trying to block the attempted takeover of the company. Said Tsenengaamu:

Tsenengamu Plans Seizure Of Zimplats

Members of Parliament have expressed concern over growing xenophobia in South Africa which resulted in the brutal murder of a Zimbabwean, Elvis Nyathi in Diepsloot last week.
The issue was raised as a matter of concern by ZANU PF chief whip in the National Assembly Pupurai Togarepi on Tuesday. He said:

We feel deeply pained over how our fellow Zimbabwean national was killed in South Africa by the so-called operations; we are pained.
It is our hope that the people of South Africa, especially those criminals who are perpetuating this activity will stop it and allow co-existence.
We are confident that the South African government has the capacity to deal with these criminals and also hope that xenophobia and further killings will be stopped.

An anti-immigrant citizens’ movement, Operation Dudula, led by Nhlanhla “Lux” Dlamini, has been targeting foreign nationals in different parts of South Africa, harassing and extorting them.
Groups such as Operation Dudula are accused of fuelling recent xenophobic attacks such as the killing of Nyathi by vigilantes in Diepsloot, a slum area north of Johannesburg on Wednesday last week.
Nyathi was dragged from his shack, assaulted and burned by a mob that accused him of being a foreign criminal.

MPs Appeal To SA Govt To Act On Xenophobia

A Zimbabwean national living in South Africa was injured in an alleged attack two weeks ago by locals in Capetown’s Breadasdorp settlement.
Immanuel Zinja told VOA Zimbabwe that he wants to return to Zimbabwe as his property was looted, leaving him and his pregnant wife almost destitute.
He said he was attacked by protesters armed with axes and machetes and suffered deep cuts on his head and had to be hospitalized.
The South Africans accuse foreign nationals of taking their jobs and fueling crime. Said Zinja:

All our property was looted while I was in the hospital. When my wife Letwin (Mupfugami) went to check on some baby clothing she had bought for the child she is expecting, she found the house empty.
We have been living in South Africa since 2014. So, all the property we were buying to take back home was stolen. We have nothing except the clothes on our backs.

Zinja’s wife said she learnt about her husband’s attack on a local WhatsApp group in which she is a member. She said:

I nearly passed out when I read a message on the WhatsApp group concerning my husband whose name was mentioned.
Indications were that he was either dead or still alive. I tried to call him but he was not responding to my calls.
I ended up calling his boss who informed me that he had been badly hurt and had some deep cuts from an axe on his head but was still alive and had been taken to a local hospital.
When I got to the hospital, he could not recognize me and had to be taken for surgery at a hospital that specializes in serious injuries.

Letwin quit her job as a farm labourer in order to look after her unwell husband. She advised fellow Zimbabwean immigrants to be alert as they can be attacked at any time. She said:

I advise Zimbabweans who are in unsafe areas to send all their property home as they risk losing everything like us.
We have nothing but worked in South Africa for a long time.
We must now rely on well-wishers so that we can return home. This is a sad situation and has stripped us of all our dignity.

Meanwhile, in a related development, Zimbabwean immigrant, Elvis Nyathi, was extorted of R50, assaulted and burnt in the street in Diepsloot last week on Wednesday.
On Monday, President Cyril Ramaphosa urged South Africans to stop taking the law into their hands by attacking undocumented foreigners.

Zimbabwean Injured In Axe Attack In SA Seeking Help To Return Home

Foreign nationals living in Diepsloot, Johannesburg, say they live in fear after a Zimbabwean man, Elvis Nyathi, was killed by vigilantes on Wednesday night, just hours after Police Minister Bheki Cele visited Diepsloot.
Bongani Mkhwanazi, a spokesperson for the Zimbabwean community in Diepsloot said he had spoken to Nyathi’s widow, Nomsa Tshuma. Said Mkhwanazi:

When one of our own just pointlessly has lost his life, because he didn’t have proper papers and the assumption was that he had a gun, that is very painful.
The mob whipped his wife, demanding she shows them where the husband kept his gun, a gun he didn’t have.
They eventually demanded R300 to release him, but she only had R50, so they took that. They went on to burn him alive.
We feel the law enforcement is passive on this matter. These vigilante groups have been harassing people for a long time.

Minister of Home Affairs Aaron Motsoaledi, Cele, Gauteng Premier David Makhura and the National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola addressed Diepsloot residents on Friday after days of protests in the Johannesburg township.
Mkhwanazi wanted to speak during the meeting but he was shouted down and chased out of the community centre.
The Zimbabwean left the venue wearing a Johannesburg metro police jacket for safety. He said:

We were invited to that stakeholders’ meeting with the police minister by community leaders from Diepsloot.
We have met them before, I think about three times … We wanted to establish a crime policing forum, and also create a skills development forum.
We tried to address this back and forth of us taking jobs from each other, so we hoped to share skills so that we all have the capacity to take on jobs.

Sitshiwe Mafunga, originally from Zimbabwe, has lived in Diepsloot for the past decade.
She runs a salon and sewing business in Extension 4. Mafunga told GroundUp that the immigrant community in Diepsloot now lives in fear. She said:

I am constantly frightened now, even though I possess legal documents to be here. It is wrong for people to get killed because they come from outside South Africa because we are all Africans and human beings after all.
The police must do their work and arrest criminals. Crime has no nationality as criminals here are also South African.
We are scared now and constantly lock ourselves indoors.

Zimbabweans Live In Fear Of Vigilantes In Diepsloot

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned rising anti-immigrant sentiment in the country which he said echoes South Africa’s apartheid past.
In an open letter to South African citizens, Ramaphosaa also criticised far-right anti-immigrant politicians who exploit people’s grievances for political gain.
Ramaphosa said crime, not migrants, is the common enemy South Africans must work together to defeat. Part of the letter reads:
<blockquote>
It is therefore deeply disturbing how the recent incidents of anti-foreigner sentiment in parts of the country echo our apartheid past.
We have seen people being stopped on the street by private citizens and being forced to produce identification to verify their immigration status.
We have seen some political leaders making unscientific statements about immigrants to exploit people’s grievances for political gain.
We have seen marches being led on people’s homes and their dwellings raided for evidence of criminal activity.
We have seen people being attacked, hurt and even killed because of how they looked or because they have a particular accent. This was how the apartheid oppressors operated.
They said some people could only live in certain areas, operate certain businesses or take certain jobs.
Under apartheid, black people were deemed suspects by default and stopped by police when found in so-called white areas.
Black people were forced to produce a dompas and if they could not do so, they were jailed. We cannot allow such injustices to happen again.
The events in the Gauteng township of Diepsloot last week were a tragedy. In the course of a single weekend, seven people were killed, sparking protests.
This loss of life is deplorable, as is the killing of a fellow African from Zimbabwe allegedly at the hands of vigilantes.
Crime is a serious problem in this country. It affects all communities and people are justifiably tired of living in fear of criminals.
Contrary to what is claimed by some anti-immigration groupings and individuals, the perpetrators of crime are both black and white, male and female, foreigner and citizen.
Crime, not migrants, is the common enemy we must work together to defeat.
We cannot defeat crime through incitement, violence, intimidation and vigilantism aimed at foreign nationals, and specifically nationals from other African countries.
We acknowledge many communities are frustrated by the apparent inability of the police to deal with criminals.
Among the measures, we are taking to capacitate the police is the recruitment of an additional 12,000 additional police officers.
We are also re-establishing community policing forums (CPFs) across the country.
These forums bring communities and police representatives together to improve local safety and hold police accountable.
Communities need to work with the police by actively participating in CPFs and reporting suspected acts of criminality.
Even as we intensify our fight against crime, there is no justification for people taking the law into their own hands.
At the same time, we recognise that illegal migration poses a risk to South Africa’s security, stability and economic progress.
Illegal migration affects service delivery and places additional burdens on essential services such as health care and education.
Like any sovereign nation, we have the right to implement policies and measures that guarantee the integrity of our borders, protect the rights of South Africans and provide that all who reside within our borders have a legal right to be here.
Controlling migration is the responsibility of the government.

'Fight Crime, Not Migrants' Ramaphosa Tells South Africans

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned vigilantes in his country for demanding that foreign nationals produce identification.
In a letter to South Africans, Ramaphosa reminded his compatriots that only a police member or immigration officer can ask for identity documents.
This comes after a Zimbabwean national, Elvis Nyathi, was brutally murdered by a mob in Diepsloot, Johannesburg on Wednesday last week after he failed to produce identity documents.
Anti-immigrant activists under Operation Dudula have also been moving door-to-door in several parts of South Africa kicking undocumented foreigners out of their homes.
Ramaphosa assured South Africans that his government was prioritising the enforcement of migration legislation. Part of his letter read:
<blockquote>
No private citizen may assume the role of immigration or law enforcement authorities by demanding that foreign nationals produce identification.
Under Section 41 of the Immigration Act, only a police member or immigration officer can ask someone to identify themselves as a citizen, permanent resident or foreign national.
If these officers believe, on reasonable grounds, that the person is in the country unlawfully, they may be detained while an investigation into their status is conducted.
When doing so, law enforcement authorities must respect that person’s rights and dignity. They may not do so in a manner that is degrading or humiliating.
Enforcement of migration legislation is a priority for the government. We are working to ensure that syndicates perpetrating immigration fraud in collusion with corrupt officials are brought to book. This year alone, several people implicated in passport fraud have been arrested.
No private citizen or group has the right to enter businesses and demand its owners produce proof that their businesses are registered or legal.
This is the competence of municipal, provincial or national authorities, including inspectors from the Department of Employment and Labour and the South African Revenue Service.
Like all other businesses, foreign-owned businesses must obey the relevant laws, including health and safety regulations, have all the required permits and licences, and pay the necessary taxes.
We are a democracy founded on the rule of law. Acts of lawlessness directed at foreign nationals, whether they are documented or undocumented, cannot be tolerated.
Attacking those we suspect of wrongdoing merely because they are foreign nationals is not an act of patriotism.
It is immoral, racist and criminal. In the end, it will lead to xenophobia, whose consequences we have lived through in previous years.
We do not want to go back there because in the main the people of South Africa are not xenophobic.

The ZANU PF Youth League has urged the ANC Youth League to push the South African government to bring to justice the people who murdered a Zimbabwean national, Elvis Nyathi, in Diepsloot, Johannesburg on Wednesday night.
In an open letter to the ANC Youth League, the ZANU PF Youth League’s Acting National Deputy Secretary for Youth Affairs, Tendai Chirau criticised opposition politician Herman Mashaba and Operation Dudula for allegedly inciting xenophobia. Said Chirau:

The ZANU PF Youth League registers with utter horror, the unchecked rise of xenophobia, ethnic brutality and Afrophobia being carried out against African non-South African citizens by vigilantes calling themselves “Operation Dudula”, inspired by inflammatory utterances from charlatans like Herman Mashaba, and fronted by Rhodie pawns such as Nhlanhla Lux.
This depravity recently culminated in the brutal and needless lynching of Mr Elvis Nyathi, a Zimbabwean national in Diepsloot, Gauteng province.
As the ZANU PF Youth League, we remain forever alive to the fact that black South Africans, including all fellow Africans, are our brothers and sisters with whom we share a bond of history, identity and culture which predates the artificial boundaries and ethnic divisions forced upon us by the racist colonial powers during the 1884-1886 Berlin Conference, which our ancestors were never a party to.
We are all Bantus who migrated from one point of origin, and our “Ubuntu” ethos has consistently united us against all forms of adversity. Africa is the home for all indigenous “brown” people.

ZANU PF Youth League Blames Mashaba, 'Lux' For Nyathi Murder

An African National Congress (ANC) activist on Friday accused Zimbabwean nationals of killing South Africans in Diepsloot, Johannesburg and asked them to leave the area.
Thabang Molefe, a convener of ANCYL structures, made the call while addressing journalists in Diepsloot, a day after the brutal murder of Elvis Moyo, a Zimbabwean national, by vigilantes. Said Molefe:

I represent young people in this community. It is the young people that are asking why are you allowing these Zimbabweans to kill us. We are not joking here.
We have invited the minister here. Zimbabweans must leave once and for all. We are saying that South Africans must start walking around with ID documents.
We are calling for operation stop, search and arrest. Police must randomly search [and ask] who are you, where are you from, where is your documentation…That is how we want it in Diepsloot.
</blockquote>
Diepsloot residents blamed foreign nationals for the high levels of crimes such as armed robberies and murder in the area.
Meanwhile, the Foundation for Human Rights, a Johannesburg-based organisation that focuses on human rights issues across SA, said it had started to receive requests from migrants in Diepsloot who want help to return to their countries.
Sarah Motha, the foundation’s programme director for vulnerable groups, claimed that dozens of immigrants have already left Diepsloot for their safety. She said:

There’s a high level of fear in people who have been living in Diepsloot as immigrants.
Since the acts of violence started some have relocated while some are asking to be repatriated to their home countries.
We have met with other civic organisations today to map out how we can intervene and get help in terms of evacuating those that want to be evacuated [from Diepsloot].

2/4 We mourn with the family of Elvis Nyathi, who like many compatriots was forced into economic refuge by a tragic failure of leadership in his country and the region. Nyathi was sacrificing to feed his family. He could have stayed in Zimbabwe if circumstances were different.
3/4 The brutal killing of Nyathi reminds us yet again of the need to resolve the human-made governance &amp; leadership crisis in Zimbabwe. Many wouldn’t have to risk their lives in a hostile environment if Zimbabwe was working. Help to resolve the crisis to fix the migration challenge.
4/4 Fixing Zimbabwe’s political crisis will fix Zimbabwe’s economy and will also ultimately fix migration &amp; pressures it brings on our neighbours. Zimbabweans won’t have to subject themselves to the indignities &amp; risks of hostility. Africa is one &amp; indivisible! We can’t be divided!

Chamisa Speaks Out On The Brutal Murder Of A Zimbabwean In SA

Xenophobic or Afrophobic attacks have erupted once again in South Africa amid calls for the United States of Africa.
Zimbabwean opposition leader, Linda Masarira wrote an open letter to South Africa’s president Cyril Ramaphosa asking:
<blockquote>At what point are you going to show leadership and stop these brutal and merciless attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa. What does it mean to the spirit of Ubuntu and the issue of a United Africa? Please help us to unite Africa!</blockquote>
Others also weighed in condemning “these barbaric acts” on fellow humans. Aleck Ncube said:
<blockquote>This is unacceptable in this day and age. African leaders must speak with one voice when it comes to Xenophobic Attacks in any African country! The tragedy is that of African leaders not voicing their concerns openly! SADC, AU must condemn these barbaric acts!</blockquote>
Meanwhile, some, however, blamed governments of victims of the xenophobic attacks in South Africa saying their citizens would not have gone to South Africa if they had fixed their crises.
The majority of the victims of these xenophobic attacks in South Africa are economic refugees who ran away from their countries following the collapse of their economies back home.
South African nationals have often argued that foreign nationals were taking away employment opportunities from them since they are desperate to the extent of accepting jobs that offer paltry salaries. Watch the video below for more.

The government of Zimbabwe has helped 96 Zimbabweans return home to Zimbabwe following the Xenophobic attacks in South Africa recently. <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/11/afrophobia-xenophobia-171-zimbabweans-affected-so-far-govt/">About 170 Zimbabweans are reported to have been displaced</a> in the recent attacks. The 96 left in two buses from Gauteng Province on 12 September 2019.
Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to South Africa, David Hamadziripi said:
<blockquote>A total of 171 Zimbabweans were affected and 96 have decided to come home. The Government of Zimbabwe paid for their repatriation.</blockquote>

Government Helps 96 Return To Zimbabwe Following Xenophobic Attacks

Scores of Nigerian nationals were seen at the Nigerian consulate today as they awaited transportation to take them to the airport where they will be repatriated back to their country by an aeroplane arranged by their government, Eye Witness News reports. Nigeria, at the start of the week, said it was planning to repatriate 600 Nigerians from South Africa following deadly Xenophobic attacks that ravaged part of the country killing 10 South Africans and 2 foreigners. The second-largest economy in Africa reportedly sent the first batch home in a private Nigerian Airline Air Peace today.
Some Nigerians who spoke to the publication as they awaited transportation has this to say:
<blockquote>if they want people to go, it should not be in this way, not by destroying things, not by destroying lives
I used to teach before I came to this country. I think it would be a good opportunity to start again</blockquote>
Most of the Nigerians that were speaking to the publication had been in South Africa for years and lost property due to vandalism. Xenophobic attacks have been ongoing in South Africa for some days and the South African Government have responded to the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/02/steps-are-being-taken-to-counter-the-problem-sa-government-on-xenophobia-threats/">attacks by saying they were dealing with the problem</a>.

A small group of drivers in South Africa protested against foreign drivers taking their jobs. According to a tweet by regional human rights activist, Dewa Mavhinga, the group is called All Truck Drivers Foundation (ATDF) and it is fighting against foreign truck drivers in South Africa.
Said Mavhinga:
<blockquote>They vow to take back all jobs that are with foreign drivers &amp; use xenophobic/ derogatory terms to refer to foreigners (KweleKwele).</blockquote>
It is not clear when exactly the protest happened.

A truck driven by a Zimbabwean trucker burns following an apparent Xenophobic fresh attack in Durban South Africa which happened on 27 April 2019.
As the truck burns, a man who is apparently making a phone call says “it’s burning and him too is burnt. By Southway, right here by Southway. Can you come down? The ambulance is here also”
A Zimbabwean truck driver was sleeping in the truck when it was set alight reportedly by individuals who feel that foreign truck drivers are taking their jobs.
There have been a number of Afrophobic attacks in Durban in 2019 so far.

A Zimbabwean truck driver cries while his wounds are attended to after a truck he was sleeping in was burnt by some attackers. It’s not clear when the incident happened by a tweet by human rights activist, Dewa Mavhinga was posted Saturday morning, implying it could have happened on Friday night.
As he cries, he pleads with a colleague in the named Pardon to “call this number please Pardon”. At some point, the colleague says the driver should be thankful that his head did not get any burns. They communicate in the Zimbabwean Shona vernacular language.
