Air Lieutenant Nesbert Tambudza, a pilot in the Airforce of Zimbabwe, died when the K-8 jet trainer he was flying crashed in the Guinea Fowl area near Gweru.
According to a statement from the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) on February 6, the crash happened about 5 kilometres east of Guinea Fowl, and the plane was badly damaged when it hit the ground.
Fortunately, no one on the ground was hurt, and there was no damage to property. The statement reads:

The Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) is saddened to announce the death of a young pilot, Air Lieutenant Nesbert Tambudza, who died after the Karakorum-8 (K-8) jet trainer aircraft that he was flying crashed in the Guinea Fowl area in Gweru.
The unfortunate accident happened when the pilot was on a solo consolidation general handling navigation training.
The Commander Zimbabwe Defence Forces, General PV Sibanda, said that the news of the death of Air Lieutenant Tambudza had been received with heavy hearts and all Officers and Members were in mourning over the sad loss of a talented pilot.
On behalf of Officers, men and women of the ZDF, the Commander Zimbabwe Defence Forces wishes to express his heartfelt condolences to the family, relatives, friends and colleagues of our departed Officer, Air Lieutenant Tambudza.
Air Lieutenant Tambudza was a young pilot who had demonstrated immense potential and was therefore selected to undergo a jet flying conversion training course at Number 2 Squadron, Josiah Tungamirai Air Force Base in Gweru. At the time of his death, he was in the final phases of training on the K-8 jet.
The accident occurred about 5 kilometers East of Guinea Fowl and on impact with the ground the aircraft was extensively damaged.
There were no civilian casualties and damage to property on the ground.
In the meantime, the Air Force of Zimbabwe has constituted a Board of Inquiry to investigate the cause of the accident.
Arrangements for the funeral parade and burial for Air Lieutenant Tambudza will be announced in due course.

On Thursday, January 2, 2025, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF), promoted 27 officers in the Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ).
The promotions included two Air Commodores, 11 Group Captains, and 16 Wing Commanders. However, one Air Commodore and one Group Captain are currently out of the country on duty.
The promotions were made under Section 15 (1) (b) of the Defence Act, which states:

Vice President Constantino Chiwenga said that Air Chief Marshal (Retired) Elson Moyo is in stable condition and receiving medical care at a hospital in Harare following a road accident near Chegutu earlier this week.
Chiwenga visited the former Commander of the Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) on Friday to assess his condition and convey his best wishes.

Chiwenga revealed that Moyo is one of the first qualified group of fighter jet pilots who were deployed to the AFZ after independence. He said:

A leaked internal memorandum from a district intelligence officer in Chegutu reveals that a 67-year-old Moyo was involved in a car accident on October 29 at around 3 PM.

The reasons behind Moyo’s dismissal were not disclosed, and he was replaced by Air Marshal John Jacob Nzvede.

Former Air Force Commander Elson Moyo In Road Traffic Accident

A top Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) officer has been discharged over his role in an aircraft accident that killed two experienced pilots on 02 February this year.
The AFZ SF260 trainer aircraft flew into electric lines as it struggled to gain height shortly after take-off near Mlezu College in Kwekwe.
Group Captain Bensen Munyanduki, 50, and Wing Commander Daniel Manyenga, 37, died in the accident.
Air Commodore Marcelino Jakuvos Jaya, the Base Commander of the former Thornhill Air Base in Gweru, now Josiah Tungamirai Air Force Base, has left the Air Force in disgrace over the accident.
Jaya reportedly gave the instruction to the two pilots to fly the stricken aircraft. <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/top-air-force-chief-sacked-over-doomed-flight-that-killed-2-pilots/">ZimLive</a> quoted a military source as saying:

A tribunal found that after the aircraft first crash-landed, Air Commodore Jaya was given specific instructions by AFZ Commander Air Marshal Elson Moyo to put the aircraft on a low-bed truck and take it to the air base.
Instead, Jaya ignored a lawful instruction and decided to send our best two pilots on a doomed mission to fly an aircraft that had not been properly assessed by engineers after the earlier incident when it crash-landed.
The aircraft failed to pick up height leading to the tragic deaths of the two pilots.

ZimLive reported that the SF260 first flew on a training mission to Zvishavane with different pilots.
When the pilots were returning to Josiah Tungamirai Air Force Base, they flew into bad weather and were forced to crash-land the aircraft on a dusty road.
AFZ then sent a recovery mission and the two pilots, who had no serious injuries, were transported to the hospital for assessment.
According to ZimLive’s military sources, Air Commodore Jaya ignored instructions from senior officers to recover the aircraft with a truck.
He, instead, instructed Munyanduki and Manyenga to fly the aircraft back to base.
The plane tragically crashed shortly after take-off, robbing the Air Force of two of its experienced pilots.

Top Air Force Of Zimbabwe Officer Fired Over Crash That Killed Two Pilots

Commander of the Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) Air Marshal Elson Moyo has reportedly travelled to Nigeria to ask his counterpart for technical assistance, including in the operation and maintenance of F7 and Mi-35 aircraft.
According to a report by <a href="https://www.defenceweb.co.za/aerospace/aerospace-aerospace/zimbabwe-air-force-asks-nigeria-for-technical-assistance/">Defence Web</a>, citing the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), Moyo visited NAF Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, at NAF Headquarters in late March.
Moyo is reported to have said he would like to pursue technical assistance in the areas of research and development, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology (drones) and the operation and maintenance of F7 and Mi-35 aircraft.
He said areas for collaboration are of common interest to Zimbabwe and Nigeria as their respective air forces operate some similar aircraft (including F7s and Mi-35s).
Moyo noted that the Nigerian Air Force has within a short time recorded “remarkable feats” in its transformation effort to develop indigenous capacity.
He said the Air Force of Zimbabwe’s ability to acquire basic aircraft parts and other equipment was being hampered by sanctions imposed on the country by Western powers.
Zimbabwe’s Air Chief commended the NAF for its support in the past, including training given to the first batch of Zimbabwe pilots in the 1980s.
Amao said that the NAF is ready to forge a mutually beneficial partnership with the Air Force of Zimbabwe.

"It's Fake", Airforce Of Zimbabwe Speaks About Mass Recruitment Exercise Advert

An Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) SF260 trainer aircraft, crashed in the Mlezu College general area near Gweru, killing two pilots onboard, <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/afz-trainer-aircraft-crashes-kills-2-pilots/">reported The Herald</a>.
The aircraft was on a routine training sortie when it hit a power line and crashed, killing the two pilots.
AFZ said the names of the deceased will be released after their next of kin have been notified.
In a message after the accident, Commander AFZ, Air Marshal Elson Moyo, said:

We have learnt with heavy hearts, of the passing on of two of our pilots after a training accident. Right now, our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased pilots.

In April 2021, an AFZ Agusta Bell 412 (AB 412) helicopter crashed in Goromonzi and killed two pilots, Wing Commander Tinashe Thomas Manyowa and Flight-Lieutenant Annita Mapiye, as well as Flight Sergeant Chikamhi, a technician.
The helicopter crashed into a house at Plot 2 of Gardner Road, Ward 16 in Goromonzi, Mashonaland East.

FULL TEXT: 2 Helicopters Sent To Assist Flood-Affected Binga Families, Govt Considering Relocating Them

The Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) pilot who murdered his girlfriend in Gweru on 25 November 2018 has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
29-year-old Tashinga Musonza was found guilty of murder with constructive intent by Bulawayo High Court judge Justice Nokuthula Moyo in connection with the death of Ms Lucy Duve (37).
Musonza severely assaulted her girlfriend whom he accused of cheating on him with a workmate, George Himalaya Makwenjere.
A post-mortem carried out on Dube revealed that she had a fractured skull, blood clots in her brain and that her lungs were affected by the attack.
In her ruling, Justice Moyo said that the murder was not committed in aggravating circumstances. She ruled:
<blockquote>It would not be fair in our view to infer torture as the State relied on circumstantial evidence as there was an absence of information on how the assault was perpetrated.
Severe assault cannot be classified as torture and clearly, this is not a murder proven to have been committed to aggravating circumstances.
In this case, the mitigation does not give any peculiar circumstances that warrant this court to tamper justice with mercy.
The accused person assaulted a defenceless woman in a rather brutal manner.
The brutality of the assault as evidenced by the post-mortem report and lack of contrition on the part of the accused person will guide this court to settle for the upper range of the bracket in sentencing in such cases.
It is for these reasons that the accused person is sentenced to 20 years in jail.</blockquote>

Air Force Of Zimbabwe In Massive Recruitment Exercise

The Air Force of Zimbabwe deployed a faulty helicopter to Chimanimani.
The helicopter failed to do anything on its first day after the weather finally cleared to permit an aerial assessment of the Cyclone Idai-hit Chimanimani and Rusitu valley. A source who spoke to Daily Nrews confirmed AFZ deployed a faulty helicopter. A private Bob Henson-owned helicopter working with Chimanimani Tourist Association (CTA) managed to do an aerial assessment. Said the source:
<blockquote>There was a plan to fly in formation with the AFZ … to Mutambara at their request then see if any doctors arrived to take them to where they are needed. Sadly, this didn’t happen because of a fault with their helicopter, so the private chopper flew off without patients deciding to go ahead with assessing roads. The AFZ later flew off to Chipinge, without any patients.</blockquote>
The private helicopter, however, also later managed to assess the Wengezi to Chimanimani road as well as getting medical personnel to Mashonjowa where they were needed.

Cyclone Idai: Air Force Of Zimbabwe Deploys Faulty Helicopter

Bulawayo High Court judge, Justice Martin Makonese has denied Tashinga Musonza bail arguing the accused was a flight risk.
Musonza (29), an Air force of Zimbabwe pilot based at Josiah Tungamirai Airbase in Gweru, reportedly killed his lawyer girlfriend, Lucky Duve (32) last year accusing her of cheating on him with his unnamed colleague.
Musonza had applied for bail at the High Court through his lawyer James Makiya.
Justice Makonese dismissed Musonza’s application. He said:
<blockquote>It is now trite, that where the evidence against an applicant is overwhelming, the risk of abscondment is high. The court is aware that the applicant does not deny assaulting the deceased.
The court observes that the applicant’s defence is at variance with the cause of death recorded in the postmortem report. The question that arises is why the applicant seeks to mislead this court on the cause of death?
It is my view, that an applicant in a bail application who seeks to mislead the court is not a suitable candidate for bail.</blockquote>

AFZ Pilot Accused Of Killing Girlfriend Denied Bail

Police have arrested an Air Force of Zimbabwe officer, Norest Nyasoro after he allegedly kidnapped and robbed a foreign currency dealer in Chitungwiza.
A Zimlive report claims that Nyasoro was detained by police after he lured Ophias Chinomona who is a foreign currency dealer at Zengeza 2 shops into a car and drove away on the pretext that they wanted to do a transaction.
Nyasoro, who was in the company of three other men, informed the forex dealer that they were soldiers on an operation to arrest illegal foreign currency traders.
They went on to search Chinomona and robbed him of US$1,300; $400 bond notes and R50. They went on to slap and kick him and then dumped him out of the vehicle which had come to a stop near a Trek garage in Zengeza.
The incident happened on January 31, and the airforce officer is set to appear in court on Thursday (Today).

Air Force Of Zimbabwe Officer Arrested For Robbing Forex Dealer Of Over $1 500

A type Alouette III Army Aircraft developed a technical fault and crashed in the Mchakazi area in Gutu yesterday.
The helicopter, a single light engine originating from France, was carrying the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defence and War Veterans Mr Martin Rushwaya was travelling to Gutu from Harare.
Mr Roy Hove, Acting Provincial Administrator for Masvingo disclosed that the aircraft had experienced some faults while in midair.
Mr Hove told reporters that the pilot eventually managed to tame the ‘bird’ although some of its wheel and propellers got damaged in the near catastrophic incident.

Air Force Of Zimbabwe Helicopter Crashes In Gutu

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has promoted 10 Squadron leaders to the rank of Wing Commanders in line with section 15 sub-section 1(b) of the Defence Act.
The promoted Wing Commanders are Christopher Musembwa, Msongelwa Ndlovu, Banaby Mlilo, Shamiso Chowe, Kelvin Nemayire, Marshal Makwaiba, Crispen Moyo, Timothy Kambudzi, Spiwe Nyakabau and Clain Munetsi.

The Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) has released a statement in which it is calling for suitably qualified young Zimbabweans to fill a number of vacancies. Below is a statement from the Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) calling for new recruits.

Air Force Of Zimbabwe Recruitment 2018

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has promoted 25 Air Force of Zimbabwe officers to the ranks of Air Commodore, Group Captain and Wing Commander in terms of section 15 (3) B of the Defence Act, Chapter 11.02 with effect from November 10.
The ranks were conferred by Air Force of Zimbabwe Commander Air Marshal Perrance Shiri who said that the 25 officers were promoted based on merit. Said Air Marshal Shiri:
<blockquote>His Excellency, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa found it fit to promote the officers after recommendations had been made from the defence headquarters and the Ministry of Defence. Promotions come with greater responsibilities and the span of control is actually increased. You are expected to provide leadership. You ought to be very strict, fair and frank when dealing with your subordinates as well as your seniors.</blockquote>
Of the 10 promoted Wing Commanders, one was a female, Wing Commander Betty Madhema, who becomes the first woman officer to be assigned regimental duties which are male-dominated.

Mnangagwa promotes 25 Air Force of Zimbabwe officers

Commander of the Air Force of Zimbabwe Air Marshal Perence Shiri has said that the military will continue to take direction from civilian leadership and also promote the peace and stability of the country. This comes a few weeks after President Robert Mugabe warned the military to stay away from politics as that was tantamount to a coup.
Speaking to journalists in Harare ahead of Defence Forces Day on Tuesday, Air Marshal Shiri said
<blockquote>One of the legacies of the Air force of Zimbabwe since 1980 is subservience to political leadership.
We have co-existed with our politicians peacefully. We have complemented each other. Politicians give us direction, playing their role in mobilising people, while we concentrate on providing security to the people of Zimbabwe.
You may have heard the history of other African countries where whenever there were difficulties, the military was manipulated by other countries to destabilise the situation or even overthrow a democratically-elected Government.
We went through difficult phases, especially the Land Reform Programme, and earned ourselves a lot of enemies. Were it in other African or Third World countries, the military would have been used to destabilise the political programme.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe National Army Commander, Lieutenant-General Phillip Valerio Sibanda added:
<blockquote>We continuously assist Government and Government ministries like the Ministry of Transport. We have a number of officers who are helping that ministry to try and get the National Railways of Zimbabwe going through technicians.

Politicians give us direction, we will support govt: Military Generals

President Robert Mugabe who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, promoted 12 Air Force of Zimbabwe officers from the rank of squadron leader to wing commander at their headquarters in Harare today.
Among the promoted officers is Wing Commander Simon Matingwina who was conferred in absentia as he is currently undergoing his studies in China in line with the organisation’s thrust of breeding professional soldiers.

Mugabe promotes 12 Air Force of Zimbabwe officers

Parliament’s portfolio committee on defence, home affairs and security services, told legislators that the Air Force of Zimbabwe was in a deplorable state due to the lack of adequate budgetary allocation from the government. The AFZ reportedly owes $61 million to service providers, many of whom are now refusing to deal with the airmen. Some of the money is owed to medical aid societies due to the fact that the AFZ has not been remitting contributions
The AFZ is reportedly using decrepit equipment after facing problems in procuring new military equipment, thus threatening its ability to do its duties well and efficiently.
Excerpts from the report read:
<blockquote>Air Force of Zimbabwe is failing to fully meet some of its statutory and constitutional obligations due to underfunding and non-release of funds and hence accumulated a total debt amounting to $61,524,902.97 in previous years.
This debt includes the carryovers amounting to $143,251.61 incurred by Air Force of Zimbabwe to provide uniforms which were and are in a deplorable state thereby tarnishing the image of the organisation
There is an urgent need for serviceable military equipment, combat vehicles, self-propelled artillery weapons, arms and ammunition to improve internal capacity and efficiency of the Forces.</blockquote>
