The Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ) is still searching for investors to build a hotel at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe (RGM) International Airport. The airport is undergoing a transformation into a comprehensive aviation facility, and constructing a hotel is part of the plan.
Although there has been interest from several investors in the hotel project, progress has been slow. Tawanda Gusha, the CEO of ACZ, stated that they are exploring alternative avenues to bring the hotel to fruition. Currently, a feasibility study is being conducted, and potential partnerships are being pursued, the <a href="https://www.theindependent.co.zw/local-news/article/200023191/airports-company-pursues-suitors-for-hotel">Independent</a> reported.
In the past, an international leisure brand had expressed interest in constructing the hotel at RGM International Airport. Proposals were submitted to the Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency. This move follows the example of other countries, like South Africa, where major hotels are strategically located near airports for the convenience of travellers.
ACZ is also working on the construction of a VVIP pavilion at the airport. The refurbishment of the old international terminal building and the domestic terminal building is currently underway. The VVIP pavilion is part of the larger development project at RGM and is expected to be completed by June 2024. Gusha said:

The VVIP pavilion has been and is a part of the main RGM development project and it is already under construction and will be completed by June 2024.
We are tendering for the development of a masterplan for RGM, as well as Victoria Falls International Airport and Joshua Mqabuko International Airport in Bulawayo.
We want to start with those three. Their masterplans will inform the kind of investments that we will make at airports. But definitely, we have to develop complementary businesses around RGM and other two main airports.

The vision is to build a five-story, 150-room hotel at RGM Airport, along with a golf course, an aquarium, and conferencing facilities. The aim is to develop additional businesses around RGM and the other main airports in Zimbabwe, creating a comprehensive and integrated aviation infrastructure.

Zimbabwe's ACZ Seeks Investors For Hotel At RGM Airport, Expanding Aviation Infrastructure

The Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ) reports that the country’s airports are underutilised as they are operating at just 27% capacity. To address this, the ACZ plans to collaborate with Cape Town Tourism on a marketing campaign to boost tourism and increase airport usage. ACZ chief executive officer Tawanda Gusha spoke to NewsDay:

We are currently operating at about 27% of capacity. But it varies from airport to airport. At this airport <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2023/03/31/rgmi-airport-expansion-project-97-complete/">(Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport)</a>, we are operating at about 47% of capacity.
But there are other airports which are operating at very low capacity. Capacity utilisation is an issue we have been working on to bring more traffic into the country.

The ACZ CEO stated that Zimbabwe is involved in the Zimbabwe Destination Program, led by the Transport and Infrastructure Development and Environment, Climate, Tourism, and Hospitality Industry ministries, in collaboration with the International Finance Corporation and the World Bank. A destination management organization called “We Are Victoria Falls” has been created in Victoria Falls, with input from all stakeholders. Gusha added:

 At its launch recently, we managed to sign a memorandum of understanding with Cape Town Tourism.
We will be doing joint marketing with Cape Town Tourism, which is miles ahead of us. So we stand to benefit a lot from that. That is an opportunity we will take to bring more traffic into the country. We will increase our capacity utilisation in the airports.

He said ACZ plans to increase cargo traffic by developing horticulture and light manufacturing near airports, leading to the creation of a cargo terminal building at RGM International Airport.
Gusha added that by collaborating with aviation industry stakeholders and the International Finance Corporation and the World Bank, ACZ aims to promote air traffic into RGM, JM Nkomo, and Victoria Falls.
According to the International Air Transport Association, African passenger numbers will recover gradually, reaching 76% of 2019 levels in 2022 and pre-COVID-19 levels in 2025. Victoria Falls International Airport also plans to build a catering facility and airport hotel costing US$10 million and US$15 million, respectively.

Airports Company Of Zimbabwe: Airports Underutilised

The Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) has said it is undertaking a holistic approach to the country’s air transport development matrix to facilitate tourism and trade in line with the National Development Strategy One (NDS1).
The new thrust by CAAZ is set to deepen the country’s outstanding aviation record in safety, security, quality and efficiency in its all-encompassing economic role.
According to CAAZ Director-General, Dr Elijah Chingosho the regulator will enforce strict compliance of standards without fear or favour to enhance the development of the aviation industry.

Following the separation of CAAZ and Airports Company of Zimbabwe, our mandate is solely to regulate the industry so that we attain a commercially viable civil aviation industry that is founded on safety and security.
</blockquote>
CAAZ was unbundled into two entities in 2020, a development that limited the authority’s mandate to regulatory functions, while the Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ) was mandated with acquiring, establishing and managing airports in Zimbabwe.
Dr Chingosho highlighted Wednesday that they will be embarking on numerous education campaigns and one such will be on the use of drones, which is regulated by statutory instrument 217 of 2018.
In the spirit of global inclusivity, CAAZ will continue to issue licenses to legitimate aviation operators.

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona has appointed additional members to boards under his Ministry. 
Additional board members were appointed to Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, National Handling Services, Airports Company of Zimbabwe, National Railways of Zimbabwe and Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe.

Minister Mhona said President Mnangagwa had approved the appointment of additional board members. He added:

Some of the boards had remained with only half of the stipulated number, such that it was difficult for it to execute its statutory mandate due to difficulties in constituting a quorum at the board.

The Airports Company of Zimbabwe (Private) Limited (ACZ) has announced the appointment of Mr Tawanda Gusha as its inaugural CEO effective 1 July 2021.
The government unbundled the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) into two entities last year to avoid conflict of interest leading to the birth of the ACZ. The board is chaired by Dave Popatlal who is deputised by Dr George Manyaya. Some of the members of the board are Rumbidzai Dihwa, Dr Joseph Mabvure, Rumbidzai Dihwa and Sinikiwe Gwatidzo. Regional Airports Manager and as Director of Airports and Business Development a position he held since June 2016 until his recent appointment.
He is a holder of a master’s degree in Business Administration from the Midlands State University and a Bachelor of Science General degree (Biological Sciences &amp; Geography) from the University of Zimbabwe. He also possesses various qualifications in aviation including a post-graduate diploma in Aviation Management from the National University of Singapore amongst others. Furthermore, he has attended several capacity building programs in the aviation sector both locally and globally. 
We are confident that his strategic and operational knowledge of the aviation industry will bring very valuable and much-needed experience to the company as it seeks to fully operationalise and grow in line with the key national priorities as enshrined in the National Development Strategy 1 (“NDS1”) 
Part of his mandate will be to drive the implementation of the company’s 2021-23 Strategic plan and with it the completion of its separation from CAAZ, the finalisation of our staff recruitment process and the operationalisation of the company’s financial plans. 
Tawanda has demonstrated throughout the years his astuteness and capability as a business leader who can bring about impressive value creation. We look forward to working with him as the ACZ takes flight into the future.
