<p>Rwandan and Mozambican troops on Sunday recaptured control of the key northern port of Mocimboa da Praia from jihadists, locally referred to as al-Shabab.</p>
<p>Last month, the two countries launched joint military operations against the terrorists to destroy all their bases and neutralise their activities against innocent civilians.</p>
<p>Rwanda sent 1 000 troops to Mozambique, at the request of Maputo, to help fight the militants, stabilise the area and restore the authority of the state.</p>
<p>The Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) announced the capture of Mocimboa da Praia in a tweet on Sunday. It said:</p>

<p>The port city of Mocimboa da Praia, a major stronghold of the insurgency for more than two years has been captured by Rwandan and Mozambican security forces.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>RDF spokesman Colonel Ronald Rwivanga confirmed this to the AFP news agency, saying “yes [Mocimboa da Praia] has fallen”.</p>
<p>The port town, from where the first rebel attacks were staged in October 2017, has since last year become the de facto headquarters of a rebel armed group, locally referred to as al-Shabab.</p>
<p>Rwivanga said Mocimboa da Praia “was the last stronghold of the insurgents, marking the end of the first phase of counter-insurgency operations which is dislodging insurgents from the stronghold”.</p>

Rwanda, Mozambique Troops Recapture Mocimboa da Praia From Al Shabab

<p>Notorious machete-wielding gangs who terrorised gold mining communities in 2019 have reportedly resurfaced with police claiming to have arrested a large number of them.</p>
<div>The gangs, popularly known as Mashurugwi and or Al Sabab would rob, attack and or kill miners and some members of the public.</div>

<div>Speaking amid reports that the gangs have resurfaced, national police spokesperson Paul Nyathi said police were running a national operation Chikorokoza Ngachipere premised at ending the reign of machete-wielding gangs in the country.</div>

<div>He told the Daily News that police had arrested 8051 machete wielders. Nyathi added:</div>

<div>The Jumbo mining area in Mazowe had the most arrests followed by other arrests in Bindura, Manicaland,</div>
<div>Midlands in Gokwe and Shurugwi and Matabeleland South in Gwanda, Maphisa and Matopo.</div>

<div>The Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association (Zela) recently revealed in its latest situation report that the machete gangs had resurfaced attributing the development to the effects of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic lockdown.</div>

Machete Gangs Resurface: Police Arrest 8051

<p>Zimbabwe’s Home Affairs Minister, Kazembe Kazembe has reported that machete-wielding gangs have killed 35 people since January this year.</p>
<p>He made the remarks while presenting oral evidence before the Parliamentary Committee on Defence, Home Affairs and Security during which he also said that the gangs were also implicated in 225 robberies, 382 assault, and 15 rape cases throughout the country. He added:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>Notable achievements to date; 4 062 0ffenders have been arrested, 1 832 offenders were arrested for possession of dangerous weapons. Since the commencement of Chikorokoza Ngachipere on 14 January 2020 a total of 3 137 arrests have been made in Mashonaland Central, Manicaland and Mashonaland East Province.</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>Kazembe also said that efforts were underway to amend legislations guiding the mining sector as a way of curbing illegal mining.</p>
<p>He indicated that it does not feel right for individuals to store gold for too long before selling it to the designated buyer, Fidelity Printers and for one to carry gold detectors everywhere but nothing can be done to avoid that at the moment as there is no legislation prohibiting both acts above hence the need to amend the legislations.</p>

Machete Gangs Kill 35, Rob 225, Assault 382... Since January - Home Affairs Minister

<p>Kwekwe General hospital has appealed to the government to deploy armed security personnel at the hospital as machete gangs are reportedly and continuously threatening workers.</p>
<p>The medical superintendent at the institution, Patricia Mapanda on Monday said that the gangs will be making follow-ups on their hospitalised colleagues.</p>
<p>She made the appeal when the Health Services Board inspected the institution. Mapanda said that the situation was no longer sustainable. She said:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>They would be hiding machetes in their trousers only to bring them out in the hospital wards and in the process threatening nurses on duty.</strong></p>
<p><strong>We need HSB to really consider armed security personnel for the safety of our staff.</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>Machete gangs have been terrorising miners and members of the public for a sustainable period of time now prompting the police to launch Operation ‘Chikorokoza Ngachipere/ Ukukorokoza Akuphele’, meant to shut down all illegal mining.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, some members of the public are not convinced that authorities are committed to bringing the machete gangs to book saying that these are known people who should be encircled and arrested.</p>
<p>Others believe that the gangs, commonly known as Mashurugwi and or Al Shabab are highly connected making it difficult to bring them to book.</p>

Hospital Requests For "Armed Security Personnel" As Machete Gangs Continue To Threaten Workers

<p>Norton legislator (independent), Temba Mliswa has said that the Zimbabwe National Army should now be deployed to deal with machete gangs since it seems the police is overwhelmed now.</p>
<p>Mliswa made these remarks at a policy dialogue meeting organised by the Southern African Political Economy Series (Sapes) Trust in conjunction with the Information for Development Trust (IDT) in Harare on Thursday. He said:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>Section 251 (of the Constitution) gives the army the mandate to carry out such an operation of flushing out machete gangsters. The army conducted Operation Restore Legacy which removed the late President Robert Mugabe from power. So it means the army is powerful and can manage to deal with the problem of machete gangsters.</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>Speaking at the same event, MDC legislator for Mbizo, Settlement Chikwinya suggested that the suspects who would have been captured must be interrogated so as to establish the “big fish behind them.”</p>
<p>Chikwinya and Mliswa’s remarks come when some members of the public have slammed little action or lack of it thereof by authorities against the gangs whilst some are saying that the gangs are a creation of political elites hence the impunity.</p>

"The Constitution Empowers The Army To Flush Out Threats Including Machete Gangs," Mliswa

<p>The Herald has reported that a seven-member gang armed with machetes, axes, bicycle chains, knives and iron bars laid siege to Nyaradza Business Centre in Gokwe South where it looted shops and bars, robbed and assaulted members of the public on Friday night.</p>
<p>Mr Maxwell Gondo, a teacher at a nearby school, said that he was about to leave the business centre when the gang rounded up people. He narrated:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>It was a traumatic 30-minute encounter with the machete gang as they would strike at will, assaulting and cursing victims who would be found with nothing valuable.</strong></p>
<p><strong>I lost a cellphone and US$5 which I had in my pocket, but I felt for a colleague whom they pounced on after me. I saw them assaulting him with chains over why he had nothing on him</strong>.</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p><strong>We were told to lie down and they searched everyone while striking others with machetes</strong>.</p></blockquote>
<p>The incident was confirmed by Acting police spokesperson for Midlands Province Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende who said that a manhunt for the suspects is already underway.</p>
<p>The development comes when the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/01/12/police-ban-machetes-knives-and-axes-to-restore-sanity/">police have banned the possession of machetes, axes and knives </a>in the public in the Midlands Province, to restore sanity.</p>

<p>Seven Harare-based <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/01/25/police-raid-machete-suppliers-at-mbares-siyaso/">machete makers who were arrested last week at Siyaso in Mbare</a> have been remanded in prison. The development was confirmed to the Herald by police national spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi.</p>
<p>The development comes as the government has launched a blitz that is intended to curb machete gangs who have been terrorising miners and members of the public.</p>
<p>A few weeks ago, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/01/12/police-ban-machetes-knives-and-axes-to-restore-sanity/">police prohibited, for three months, the carrying of weapons such as machetes, knives, catapults, swords and knobkerries in the Midlands province “to restore sanity”.</a></p>
<p>Analysts say that the machete gangs are destabilising the mining sector and as a result, the country is losing a lot in revenue and their activities are also scaring away potential investorrs.</p>

Seven Machete Suppliers Remanded In Custody

<p>Former Cabinet Minister, Professor Jonathan Moyo has claimed that the ruling ZANU PF keeps dangerous weapons at its headquarters in Harare.</p>
<p>These remarks were made after Zimbabwe Republic Police invaded the headquarters of the opposition MDC led by advocate Nelson Chamisa saying that they were searching for machetes.</p>
<p>Posting on Twitter, the exiled former Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education dared ZANU PF to deny the allegations. He said:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>What I know as a politburo member in 2000–05 &amp; 2010–17; which I can state under oath is that at its Shakeshake HQ, ZanuPF keeps:</strong>
<strong>1. Dangerous weapons for its militia;</strong>
<strong>2. Tsikamutandas disguised as spirit media; and </strong>
<strong>3. Zapu archives stolen during Gukurahundi
</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>The allegations came with the country still under siege by machete gangs who are reportedly enjoying protection from political elites.</p>
<p>ZANU PF is accusing MDC officials, particularly Chalton Hwende, of protecting the gangs. On the other hand, the MDC is accusing the ruling party claiming that even President Emmerson Mnangagwa is part of the team that is protecting the notorious gangs.</p>
<p>The gangs have hampered gold mining operations in the country as they assault and kill miners and members of the public in gold mining towns. This has also led to growing discontent highlighted by numerous calls for action against the gangs.</p>

Jonathan Moyo Claims ZANU PF Keeps "Dangerous Weapons For Its Militia" At Its HQ

<p>Zimbabwe Republic Police has banned machetes, knives and axes in the machete gang-infested Midlands as a way to restore order.</p>
<p>The ban comes after reports have suggested that the machete-wielding gangs known as Mashurugwi have been beating, killing and sexually abusing gold miners and civilians, particularly in gold mining towns.</p>
<p>The ban was announced by Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko who told the Daily News this Saturday that the ban which is expected to last for three-months will be with effect from January 14. He said:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>The prohibition order which we seek to renew after every three months makes it illegal to carry dangerous weapons like machetes that can be used in the commission of crimes.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Those who fail to heed the call will be punished through being sent to jail for six months or instructed to pay a fine that doesn’t exceed level five.</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>Goko also told Daily News that gold-rich areas such as Chirumanzu, Gokwe North, Gokwe South, Gweru, Kwekwe, Mberengwa, Shurugwi and Zvishavane are the ones targeted by the ban.</p>
<p>Analysts have been saying that the machete gangs were enjoying impunity because they are highly connected.</p>

Police Ban "Machetes, Knives And Axes" To "Restore Sanity"

<p>Soldiers and police who were deployed to arrest the notorious Machete gangs are reportedly assaulting members of the public in Kwekwe which is reportedly infested by the gangs.</p>
<p>This was revealed by Redcliff legislator, Lloyd Mukapiko, who said that he was receiving reports suggesting that innocent civilians were being assaulted with some sustaining severe injuries. He added:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>Whilst it is commendable that the army and the police have been deployed to try and contain the machete gangs in the area, it is, however, concerning that they are also assaulting innocent civilians in the process.</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>The MDC legislator called for an end to the indiscriminate beating of innocent civilians saying the soldiers and police should focus on catching the real culprits.</p>
<p>Machete gangs popularly known as Mashurugwi or Al Shabab have been roaming around gold mining towns beating, killing and sexually abusing miners and civilians.</p>

Army And Police Deployed To Contain Machete Gangs Reportedly Assaulting Innocent Civilians

<p>The ZANU PF Youth League has said that it condemns the acts of the machete-wielding gangs known as Mashurugwi or Al Shabab.</p>
<p>The ruling party’s wing urged all stakeholders to diligently do their work to make sure that the gangs are contained.</p>
<p>The remarks come after reports have suggested that the gangs have been killing and sexually abusing miners and members of the public.</p>

<p>His remarks come when machete gangs who were initially believed to be from Shurugwi in the Midlands Province have for several months now been terrorising miners and members of the public in gold mining towns such as Kwekwe.</p>
<p>ZBC News reports that information on the arrested culprits suggests that they come from different parts of the country and none of them come from Shurugwi.</p>

"Machete Gangs Issue Expose Divisions In The Security Sector," Temba Mliswa

<p>Norton Miners have given President Emmerson Mnangagwa a gift of a stone sculpture which symbolises their appreciation for his support to the mining sector, achievements they have made and challenges they faced as miners.</p>
<p>Handing over the gift to the president on Friday, Norton Miners Association chairperson Privilege Moyo and women’s affairs executive, Pamela Muringai said:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>Wherever the president will place that stone gift he will always see an image of all artisanal and small scale miners across the country, the challenges they face every day, in remembrance of various comrades in mining who died due, machetes gangs, mine accidents and sickness related to mining.</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>Machete gangs, popularly known as Mashurugwi and or Al Shabab have this year allegedly killed several miners and villagers and have also been forcefully taking mines claims.</p>
<p>Moyo added that the gift was also meant to show that the miners were prepared to support the country’s vision 2030 notes that the mining sector will play a pivotal role in transforming Zimbabwe into a middle-class economy.</p>

Miners Give ED A Gift To Remind Him Of Miners Killed By Mashurugwi

<p>26 people are reported to have been killed in an attack by Al-Shabab on a popular hotel in Somalia on Friday, 12 July.</p>
<p>4 suicide gunmen are reported to have detonated a car bomb outside a hotel and then rushed into the hotel (called Medina) shooting people. The attack is reported to have lasted more than 14 hours.</p>
<p>The suicide attackers were eventually shot and killed by soldiers. The hotel was apparently chosen because local elders and legislators were meeting there to discuss approaching regional elections. Prominent Solami politicians and 2 journalists were killed.</p>
<p>Security Official Abdiweli Mohamed said:</p>
<blockquote><p>Several gunmen entered and started shooting but the security forces responded quickly and engaged in a gunfight with the attackers inside the building,</p></blockquote>
<p>Abdiasis Abu Musab, al-Shabab’s military operations spokesman said:</p>
<blockquote><p>First, we targeted [the hotel] with a suicide car bomb and then armed mujahideen [fighters] stormed the hotel. There are many dead bodies inside the hotel, including a dead white man</p></blockquote>
<p>The victims also include Kenyans, Tanzanians, Americans, a Briton and a Canadian. More than 50 people are reported to have been wounded. Al-Shabab is trying to topple the Somali government.</p>
