Stanbic Bank Zimbabwe has once again come to the rescue of people living with albinism by donating an assortment of sun protection products worth US$ 25,000 to the Albino Charity Organisation of Zimbabwe (ALCOZ).
On Wednesday, the institution handed over 1000 units of sunscreen lotion; 1000 units of antibacterial soap; 1000 units of antiseptic liquid; 1000 units of lip balm and 1000 sunhats.
Stanbic Bank Head of Brand and Marketing, Palmer Mugavha said the institution was pleased to have supported people living with albinism for the last 9 years through the partnership with ALCOZ. 
Mugavha said Stanbic Bank is happy to meet the crucial needs of people living with albinism as the hot season sets in. Said Mugavha:

Our partnership with ALCOZ is well calculated as Stanbic Bank fully understands the challenges people living with albinism face throughout the year such as weather elements, particularly the heat as summer sets in.

He noted that people living with albinism need protection from the harmful effects of the sun owing to the lack of melanin in their skin which serves as a shield from the sun.
People living with albinism rely on sunscreen lotions, special oils and lip balm for protection from the sun hence Stanbic Bank has stepped in to meet their needs, especially in these challenging economic times.
Albinism is a rare, non-contagious, genetically inherited condition which occurs worldwide regardless of ethnicity or gender.
It commonly results in the lack of melanin in the hair, skin, and eyes, causing vulnerability to sun exposure.
ALCOZ Projects and Programmes Manager, George Mafararikwa said Stanbic Bank had now proved to be “an all-weather friend” given that the partnership was now in its ninth year in support of people living with albinism. He said:

We in turn as ALCOZ always see to it that the Stanbic Bank’s hand is well extended not only to beneficiaries in Harare and surrounding areas but that it reaches the most marginalized remote areas such as Binga in Matabeleland North, Matobo in Mat. South, Chiredzi Masvingo, Gokwe in Midlands, Chipinge in Manicaland, Mbire in Mashonaland central just to mention but a few.

He said ALCOZ, just like Stanbic Bank, is committed to putting its shoulder to the wheel in supporting the government’s efforts to alleviate some of the challenges faced by people living with albinism.
Mafararikwa said the sun protection products will help the beneficiaries to integrate easily into their respective communities and see them doing their daily chores safely in the knowledge that their sensitive skin is protected from the harsh weather conditions that have been exacerbated by climate change due to global warming. He said:

Mugavha said the donation by Stanbic Bank was part of a broader and comprehensive Corporate Social Investment (CSI) strategy by the Standard Bank Group subsidiary to plough back into the communities in which it operates.

Albinism is a genetic condition where people lack melanin, affecting their skin, hair, and eyes. They may also have vision problems and are more sensitive to sunlight and risk skin cancer. ALCOZ thanks Stanbic Bank for supporting them and hopes for more support in the future.

Stanbic Bank Donates $25,000 To The Albino Charity Organisation

A South African woman will spend the next twenty years behind bars after she tried to sell an albino child to a traditional healer in Manguzi in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson in KZN, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, the woman approached the traditional healer, James Mthembu, in June 2016.
She allegedly told him that she could arrange for an 11-year-old albino child from her area that he could use for traditional medicine. Said Ramkisson-Kara:

In exchange, she wanted R100 000 and asked him to contact her if he wanted to see the boy.
</blockquote>
Kara said Mthembu informed the local police and asked them to accompany him.
She said police thought the information could assist with a missing child case they were working on at the time.
Police, working with Mthembu set a trap for the woman resulting in her arrest. She was charged with attempted human trafficking. Said Kara:

In court, Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Cyril Selepe led Mthembu’s evidence as well as that of the child’s mother and the police officers.
Selepe also submitted a Victim Impact Statement compiled by the child’s mother and facilitated by Court Preparation Officer Mandisa Sikakane.
In her statement, the woman said that she has lived in fear ever since the offence. Her son was also fearful.
The woman said that following the incident she kept her child by her side, not allowing him to leave the yard.
She also said that she considers her child to be a gift and she loves him very much, however, she cannot forget how difficult it was to protect him, knowing that there were people who wanted to harm him.

The NPA explained that in sentencing the woman, the court declared her unfit to possess a firearm. Said Kara:

The court further ordered that a social worker go to the woman’s house and assess the situation regarding her own children.

SA: Woman Jailed 20 Years For Trying To Sell Albino Child

A Zvishavane man, Emmanuel Nyoni, abandoned his family after his wife gave birth to two children with albinism.
Nyoni blamed his wife, Polite Charles, for giving birth to children with the condition and has since left his family.
Charles told The Guiding Star that her marriage collapsed after her husband and in-laws failed to accept the children. She said:

I’ve two children with albinism and this caused a lot of family misunderstandings, my in-laws couldn’t accept albino children in their family so my husband left me.
He left on 14 April last year and I’m back home to my biological parents. They’re okay with my albino children.
</blockquote>
The founder and executive director of Albino Charity Organisation of Zimbabwe (ACOZ), Loveness Mainato said there is a need to educate communities about albinism and the cause of the condition.
Speaking to The Guiding Star, Mainato said the lack of knowledge on the cause of albinism results in segregation and emotional victimisation of persons with albinism. She said:

Segregation against people with albinism is what our organisation is fighting against.
The community is not well informed about this condition of albinism, they find it easy to lay all the blame on the mother of the children yet albinism originates from both parents’ genetic make-ups, linked to family generations.
We are continuing with lessons to end segregation towards albinism, currently, we’re seized with community-based workshops in which we’re educating the communities.
Also in order to relieve challenges and reduce violence against those with albinism, we’re helping them with body lotions.

According to the National Organisation for Albinism and Hypo-pigmentation, albinism is a group of genetic conditions that cause a lack of black pigment in the skin.
The focal person for the Association of the Disabled and Elderly Persons in Zimbabwe (ADEPZ), Primrose Nyangoni, said:

There is a need to change this wrong mindset that the mother is responsible for albinism, this condition originates genetically from the combined genetic make-ups of both parents.
It’s grossly unfair for a spouse to leave another spouse because of a child born with albinism.
The misconception here is that the community thinks albinism is a curse to a parent from either God or ancestors.
Albinism is just a genetic condition, genes are passed from one generation to the other, we never know maybe this husband is the one with these genes of albinism.
This is not a disease but a condition that we must learn to accept and live with as parents, family, and community as a whole.

Zvishavane Man Abandons Family Over Children Born With Albinism

Stanbic Bank has donated sun protection products worth US$34 000 to the Albino Charity Organization of Zimbabwe (ALCOZ) as part of its annual Corporate Social Investment (CSI) contribution towards the welfare of people living with albinism.
The financial services institution donated 1 000 units of sunscreen lotions; 1 000 units of antibacterial soap; 1 000 units of antiseptic liquid, 1 000 units of lip balm and 1 000 sunhats, as well as spectacles for 12 beneficiaries.
This year’s donation marks the fifth consecutive year that Stanbic Bank has assisted ALCOZ as the financial services institution continues to play its part in cushioning people living with albinism against the weather elements, particularly the sun.
Stanbic Bank Head of Marketing and Communications, Palmer Mugavha, said the plight of people living with albinism is often taken for granted as most people are yet to fully appreciate the consequences of exposing their skin to the sun in addition to other challenges they face. Said Mugavha:

The bank is all too aware that some are ostracized and stigmatized over and above the fact that the sun protection products are priced well beyond the reach of many</blockquote>

Last year Stanbic partnered Zimplats to work with the mining company’s “Beyond the Skin” initiative and purchased spectacles for individuals and groups identified by Zimplats. Beyond the Skin’s focus is supporting people living with albinism.
The partnership saw 27 people living with albinism from Binga, Hwange and Lupane districts in Matabeleland North Province receiving spectacles and sunscreen lotions. Mugavha added:
<blockquote>In terms of the acquisition of spectacles, we have worked with the same partners we worked with last year. Therefore, we would like to thank Zimplats for arranging for the beneficiaries of spectacles to get their eyes screened before we could make the necessary purchases. 
We also appreciate Optinova’s assistance by providing discounted rates for all the eyewear we purchase for this cause. Such partnerships help in creating greater impact and we are truly grateful.</blockquote>
ALCOZ Founder and Director Loveness Mainato welcomed the donations saying Stanbic Bank was proving to be an “all-weather friend”, especially during this COVID-19 pandemic era.
Mainato said the organisation has not been spared by the effects of the skewed economic environment worsened by COVID-19, and ALCOZ knew that support from its various donors would be difficult this year as many businesses were not performing well. Said Mainato:
<blockquote>We are deeply touched by Stanbic Bank’s gesture under this COVID-19 scenario. We were thrilled beyond measure when we were told that Stanbic is ready to assist us as they have been doing for the last four years.

Stanbic Donates US$34k Worth Of Sun Protection Products For People Living With Albinism

The government has called for an end to discrimination against people living with Albinism.
Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Energy Mutodi said that Albinism should be treated like any other physical condition.
Speaking at the Albinism Health Fair facilitated by the Global Aid Missions in Harare on Saturday, Mutodi said:
<blockquote>Access to health care services is often accompanied by discrimination and stigmatisation hence leading to the hindrance of full service.
…Health professionals should end discrimination against people living with albinism. They should treat the condition just like any other condition like diabetes, cancer and many other conditions.</blockquote>
Mutodi claimed that the government is committed to providing assistance to people living with Albinism through the Ministry of Health. He said:
<blockquote>However, the government is also committed to extending help to people living with albinism. So the Ministry of Health is going to be capacitated to develop state of the art hospitals for people living with albinism.</blockquote>
Global Aid Missions managing director and cleric Fungai Chasi said that the major drawback faced by people living with Albinism is that a lot of people’s understanding of the condition is based on myths and superstitions.
Chasi revealed that Albinism is a genetic condition which comes as a result of the lack of melanin in the body which many people do not understand.
