Sungura musician Alick Macheso says it’s impossible to please everyone, particularly in light of the criticism surrounding his new album, Kupa Kuturika, released on August 2, 2024.
Macheso has chosen a unique strategy for this six-track album, opting to release songs individually; currently, four tracks are available on his YouTube channel.
Critics have expressed their disappointment, with some labelling him “a spent force” who now relies on past successes and has lost the magic that once made him a superstar.
Conversely, his devoted fans have praised the new release as a masterful work of art.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/macheso-exclusive-interview-finally-speaks-about-new-album-says-criticism-makes-him-stronger-adresses-trending-rufaro-incident/">H-Metro</a>‘s Rest Mutore, Macheso said that criticism fuels his motivation to improve as an artist and encourages him to continue working hard. He said:

Generally, in life, you can’t make everyone happy. That’s the nature of life. And critics or vaya vanomhura vakashota chinhu chacho hachiendeki.
They actually add fuel to the fire; a vehicle starts with a spark, and for the engine to run you need that spark. Saka kushora ikoko kunonaka kwatiri, tinokuda.
I actually pay attention to the criticism or should I call it denunciation somehow, it gives me the energy to be a better artist and keep working hard.
Despite being in the game for all these years, I learn every day. But, we are used to it (criticism), what I know is there are others out there who are enjoying the new music.
It’s unfortunate that everyone is now a music expert, get me right I don’t have a problem with that, that’s why takati isu chedu hubvonga chete, kushata kana nhapitapi vachadudzira ivo.
Pakabuda first song yakabva yatotanga kubhembwa, that’s what shows us that this is new music and we are actually happy about it.
What I only condemn are sponsored critics, there are others who never see anything good in Macheso or this other artist.
You can actually see that this is orchestrated, because it’s the same people, using the same way.
They always say good about you when they want to sell their content. Today the same person is saying Macheso is a legend, tomorrow it’s the opposite.
And they do it by mentioning other artist’s name, I will not mention names because we are used to this. I have been in this game for so long.

Macheso also said that he does not compare himself to other musicians, especially in light of critics who claim that a new generation of sungura artists, including Mark Ngwazi, is taking over the genre. He said:

I am not and was never in music for competition. Ndiripo kurwisa mumunda mangu, ndoti ah tarira bagwe ririmo iro. This issue of comparison has seen a number of musicians with potential failing to make it over the years.
This is not new, it happened before but I am still here. It is happening now, and the time will come kana Mwari vatichengeta, you will come with the same question, ndoti honaka Mutore, I am still here.
We sing for the same audience and it is always important to embrace each other, taking the rivalry or competition path ndaona zvisina kuperera vamwe zvakanaka.
Besides the so called (music) analysts, I have also seen other artists or their camps doing these comparisons, well it’s their strategies we no issues with it but that doesn’t stop of us from sharing our experiences.
Artists can’t make comparisons or blow their own trumpets because they are not the owners of this work (music), let’s leave it to our fans.
If you do that, there is a problem and it shows you are immature, isu tobva tati uri mafikizolo, because those with experience won’t do that.
An artist should compete with his or her own work and aim to be better in every new project.
Uchasiya munda wako uchirarira nesora, kwangu hakuna, uri kutoita maricho kumapindu angu, paunozopepuka nguva inenge yapera, unoti dai ndaka.
Run your own race and stop focusing on others.

In response to commentators who say his music has evolved over the years, Macheso likened it to cars: while the model may change, the essence of the brand remains constant. He said:

Let me give you an example of clothing, are you wearing the same design those who lived in the early 80s used to wear?
Cars are even evolving but it’s the same brand and still, others cry for the old model, that’s the nature of life as well.
That is the same with music, so should I reproduce Shedia or Charakupa nekuti yakanakidza?
The good thing is the songs are still there and they can still listen to them, but we have to give them new music.
The same people who are saying give us Chikwambo, we want that, are the same people who will say ah chazopera manje chitubu chiya, chazopwa.
I have made two steps forward and someone wants me to make 3 000 steps backwards, ndenge ndichiitei.
What I’m saying is we have our own formation at Orchestra Mberikwazvo, it’s the same with football.
And, when the coach realised that the formation is now familiar, he changes and finds another winning formula, because the idea is to always win.
Those who remain stuck in the past become punching bags. On that issue, I would say tiri bho pahu wrong hwedu.
As an artist, you should not be predictable.

Legendary sungura musician Alick Macheso revealed that in the early 1980s when he first arrived in Harare from Shamva, he would trap and roast mice, which he would then sell at liquor outlets in and around the Dzivaresekwa suburb, reported <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/thestandard/standard-style/article/200030757/i-sold-mice-for-survival-macheso">The Standard</a>.
Macheso shared this anecdote on Friday while commissioning a solar-powered borehole in Dzivaresekwa Extension.
The borehole project was funded by Pacific Cigarette Company and the local arts hub, Jive Zimbabwe. Said Macheso:

When I was staying here in Dzivarasekwa 2, these areas were my hunting grounds.
This area (Dzivarasekwa Extension) was bushes and l would come here to trap or dig up mice for selling to make ends meet.
It was in 1983 when l had just come from Shamva.

Macheso also revealed that he would go fishing in the nearby river where his catches “surprised many”.
He urged parents to support their children, who would have exhibited talent in music. Said Macheso:

So for those saying he is a spent force, I find them maybe having a bone to chew with him.
But, you cannot pull a good man down. Here we are talking of an artist who, beyond his musical career, has helped many disadvantaged sections of our society. That is how we must measure Baba Shero.
Music is not just about dancing and twerking, but what it brings to the common and ordinary man from Bikita.

"Macheso Is Not A Spent Force"

Sungura music legend Alick Macheso on Saturday reminded Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training Minister Tino Machakaire about a haulage truck that the minister had promised the musician almost two years ago.
According to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200030531/where-is-my-truck-macheso-asks-machakaire">NewsDay</a>, in December 2022, when Machakaire was the deputy minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation, he had promised Macheso a haulage truck after the musician’s performance at the Hwedza Arts Festival.
On Saturday, August 3, at the launch of Macheso’s 13th album “Kupa Kuturika” at the Alex Sports Club in Harare, the sungura star reminded Machakaire about the unfulfilled promise.
Macheso raised the issue just after Machakaire had gifted the musician with $10,000 – half for Macheso himself and the other half for his band.
Before handing over the wad of US dollar notes to Macheso’s management, Machakaire said:

I have come from far promoting him. I am a businessman. He is my best man, I love you. Mai Shero, Baba Shero, I love you.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has cleared renowned Zimbabwean musician Alick Macheso to hold the launch of his new album “Kupa Kuturika” at the Alexander Sports Club in Harare on Friday, August 2, 2024.
Initially, there were concerns that the police could potentially ban the event due to fears of potential unrest during the SADC Industrialisation Week, which is scheduled to take place from July 28 to August 2.

Alick Macheso Unveils Tracklist For 13th Album "Kupa Kuturika"

Police have launched a manhunt for a 22-year-old man from Epworth, Harare, who allegedly forced his young child to drink a traditional beverage laced with rat poison resulting in his child’s death.
In a statement, police said Tinashe Nyamutambo had a dispute with his wife on 29 January 2024 and later drank buttermilk maheu laced with poison forcing their 2-year-old child to do the same.
The child died whilst on admission at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals on 31 January. Nyamutambo fled and was yet to be accounted for as of 15 May 2024. Police said:

The ZRP is appealing for information which may assist in locating Tinashe Nyamutambo (22) who is being sought in connection with a case of murder which occurred on 29/01/2024 at a house in Garan’anga, Epworth, Harare.
The suspect allegedly forced his child (2) to drink buttermilk Maheu which was laced with rat poison following a domestic dispute with his wife.
Subsequently, the suspect drank the poisoned Maheu and was referred to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals together with the child for treatment.
The child died whilst on admission at the hospital on 31/01/24 whilst the suspect escaped to an unknown destination.

Originally planned for 7 June, the album launch will now take place on August 2, 2024, coinciding with warmer outdoor temperatures.
In a statement shared on his social media platforms, Macheso explained that the decision to postpone was due to the chilly weather typically experienced in June. 
Despite the change in timing, the venue for the album launch remains Alex Sports Club. Reads the statement:

Originally slated for the 7th of June, the event will now take place on the 2nd of August.

Musician Alick Macheso has urged people to act responsibly during the festive period and avoid the over-consumption of alcohol which may result in the unnecessary loss of life.
The 55-year-old humanitarian ambassador was quoted by <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/alcohol-will-be-there-after-you-warns-macheso/">H-Metro</a> as saying imbibers should remember that beer will be there long after they are dead. He said:

Firstly, I would like to warn people that December comes every year and we don’t need to lose lives.
People should know their limits and stop behaving like beer is a new thing.
Beer will always be there and what is important for drinkers is to be responsible and save lives.
Unfortunately, some people party to extremes, which has ended in tears most of the time.

Award-winning guitarist, lyricist, and dancer <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Alick_Macheso">Alick Macheso</a> says he values family shows and will always prioritise such gatherings as they are important for bonding.
The “King of Sungura” was speaking to <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/family-comes-first-macheso/">H-Metro</a> ahead of his performance at the Winter Warmer Family Bash at the Harare Gardens on Sunday. He said:

I have been performing for years now but family shows have a special place in my heart. I always love to see parents with their children enjoying our music in one place.

Sungura musician Peter “Young Igwe” Moyo has denied reports claiming that he has hit hard times and begged for financial assistance from <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Alick_Macheso">Alick Macheso</a>.

According to a report, Peter asked for rent money from Macheso during a family musical show at Steak House in Waterfalls recently.
He was quoted as saying he received the money to pay his rent and more than US$500 from well-wishers after his public appeal. 
The report also claimed that Macheso commended Peter for opening up on his problem and that pledged to assist him. Macheso reportedly said:

Sungura musician <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Alick_Macheso">Alick Macheso</a> has paid rent for <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Peter_Moyo">Peter Moyo</a>, son of late musician <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Tongai_Moyo">Tongai Moyo</a>, popularly known as Dhewa.
Peter asked for rent money from Macheso during a family musical show at Steak House in Waterfalls last week.
The Utakataka Express band leader later said he received the money to pay his rent and more than US$500 from well-wishers after his public appeal. Said Peter:

Sungura musician Alick Macheso has urged Allan Chimbetu to unite with Suluman, Tryson, and his son Douglas to preserve Dendera music which was pioneered by the late Simon “Chopper” Chimbetu several decades ago.
Macheso said the Chimbetus should emulate the unity that was demonstrated by the late Dendera co-founders, Simon and Naison, reported <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/chimbetus-must-unite-macheso-wishes-for-united-dendera-family/">H-Metro</a>.
Addressing Allan on the stage after their joint show at Makuluwani Gardens near White House Shopping Centre at the weekend, Macheso said:

You must move together with Suluman, Tryson and Douglas as their father figure.
So far you are yet to realise much, which calls for you to unite.

Alick Macheso’s former lover, Petunia Rwizi, to whom he dedicated one of his popular songs, Petunia, has died.
Petunia died at the age of 45.
Petunia recently succumbed to cancer and was laid to rest on 11 October at her rural home in Dirikwe Village of Nyanyadzi in Chimanimani District, according to <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/funeral-party-for-machesos-lover/">Manica Post</a>.
Macheso and Petunia have one child named Munashe who was born in 2000, the same year the song Petunia was released.
Mourners who gathered at Petunia’s rural homestead for a three-day funeral wake would often break into song and dance, with the hit song “Petunia”, being the soundtrack of the funeral.
Brother to the deceased, Isay Rwizi, spoke to Manica Post:

Most people who knew my sister well pleaded with us to have some sort of a funeral party for Petunia.
They played Alick Macheso’s music throughout and danced.
Apart from the suggestive dances, we saw nothing wrong with that because we all know that the two, Macheso and my sister Petunia, once had an affair and they had a child together.

Macheso also assisted Petunia with her hospital bills, long after her relationship with Macheso had ended, according to The Weekender.
The sungura maestro is also said to have contributed towards Petunia’s burial. Isay Rwizi said:

During the days she was unwell, Mai Shero (Macheso’s wife) gave our sister some financial assistance and we appreciate such humility.

In the song “Petunia”, Macheso expresses his deep love for the woman. 
Back then, the rumour mill had it that a Chipinge man only identified as Garikai, who is also now late, was in a relationship with Petunia when Macheso came into the picture and he dumped her.
Macheso is said to have dedicated “Madhau” to a lover who was based in Marondera, while “Monalisa” hailed from Bulawayo and “Tafadzwa” traces part of her upbringing to Mutare.

Alick Macheso's Petunia Dies

Alick Macheso’s Orchestra Mberikwazvo will be without key member, Jonasi Kasamba when they embark on their international tour beginning Saturday night. 
The group’s publicist, Tich Makahamadze, told <a href="https://ztn.co.zw/bereaving-kasamba-misses-macheso-tour/">ZTN</a> that Kasamba lost his mother and has since returned to the Democratic Republic of Congo, his home country. He said:

Yes, Jonasi is missing the tour. He has lost his mother back in DRC and we have allowed him to travel and mourn his mother. “We have him and his family in prayers and we would have loved to be with him in these difficult times but it’s unfortunate the death came at a time we’re on this tour.
It’s not a secret that Jonasi brings that vibe into the band, that’s his job. We are going to miss him but work has to continue. Those who are available will do the job.
We were set to start the tour Friday night in Dubai but due to reasons beyond our control, we had to postpone it to Saturday (tonight).

Macheso is set to perform in Asia, Australia and Europe, with a performance at Secret Lounge, Excelsior Hotel, Al Barsha in Dubai tonight.

Macheso Leaves Jonasi Kasamba Behind As He Embarks On International Tour

Sungura musician Alick Macheso is set to embark on an international tour which will take him to Dubai (United Arab Emirates), Australia and the United Kingdom.
Macheso will be promoting his 12th album titled “Tinosvitswa Nashe,” which he recently launched.
Orchestra Mberikwazvo band manager, Tich Makahamadze, said they are going to spend the whole month of August in the diaspora. Said Makahamadze:

Now, it’s high time the album should appeal to our international fans and those in the Diaspora.

Macheso To Tour Dubai, Australia And UK In August

Sungura musician Alick Macheso has engaged various local video producers, including Vusa “Blaqs” Hlatshwayo, for the production of videos for songs on his latest album “Tinosvitswa Nashe”.
Orchestra Mberikwazvo manager Tich Makahamadze said they approached various video producers and tasked them to come up with scripts so that they will pick the best.
Makahamadze also revealed that Macheso will be touring the United Kingdom in the coming weeks. He said:
We are expecting to start working on the videos on Tuesday.
So far we gave various video producers tasks to develop a script for the song Kutadzirana, which we want to start working on before our United Kingdom tour.
We will be touring the United Kingdom in the coming weeks and we hope we will be done with the initial stages of the videos.

He has amassed both fame and fortune due to his creative edge and to compare him with Mark Ngwazi is not right.
I would prefer people who say Mark Ngwazi is good because he is talented but to then compare him with Macheso remains the highest level of disrespect.
The moment you start comparing the two artists, fans will be divided for nothing yet we know for real that Macheso is a legend.
My advice to Ngwazi is for him to remain focused and never to take those comparisons seriously.

Mark Ngwazi Is Good But Can't Be Compared With Macheso, Says Nicholas Zakaria

Sungura music legend Alick Macheso on Wednesday set up a temporary classroom at the Aquatic Complex in Chitungwiza and spent the day talking to primary school children.
Macheso, who is currently riding high on his new album “Tinosvitswa Nashe” released last week, spent the day interacting with learners from Nadia’s Primary School in Hatfield.
The tutorial saw pupils from ECD-A to Grade 7 discussing music with Macheso, in a session that also had a question-and-answer segment.
The session, called the Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) tour, is part of Nadia’s Primary School’s fulfilment of the new curriculum requirements.
Speaking to H-Metro, on the sidelines of the session, Macheso said he appreciates the introduction of VPA in schools as it will help in the growth of the music industry. He said:

I didn’t think twice when I was told about this occasion. It’s good to realise that the Government has introduced this Visual and Performing Arts subject to our children.
It was good spending time with pupils, it was a session about music and we had a question-and-answer segment which was helpful.
I was impressed by the questions and that most were coming from even those in Grade 1.
They are appreciating music and this will help the industry grow.

VPA, which is now an examinable subject at Grade 7 level, was made mandatory in primary education when the new curriculum was introduced.
Nadia’s Primary School headmaster, Lawrence Matare, explained the purpose of Macheso’s visit. Said Matare:

There is a part of African music of which sungura is part. We saw it fit as a school to come and visit one of the sungura kings in Zimbabwe so that he can shed more light on the sungura genre.
And, also to help the pupils, especially Grade 7s, with their VPA, the subject was a challenge for them and we saw it fit that children can get more interest in the VPA subject.

School Ropes In Alick Macheso To Ignite Learners' Interest In VPA

Sungura musician Alick Macheso said that his latest six-track album Tinosvitswa Nashe (God will get us there) gives honour to God for His guidance and protection in people’s day-to-day activities.
The album, which is Macheso’s 12th, was launched on Friday at Aquatic Complex in Chitungwiza.
Speaking to The Standard ahead of the launch, Macheso said each song has its own meaning. He said:

Waking up in the morning to prepare for the day’s routine is because of God’s favour. 
Kubva kumba kusvika kubasa munzira mose matinofamba dzamara tasvika kubasa ikoko hatifambe toga tine anofamba nesu, tinosvitswa nashe ndiro zita realbum muchidimbu (from home to where ever will be going be it to work, travelling to get there we are all guided by the Almighty, so for all this to materialise it is because of the Lord, who gets us there, that is the name of the album in brief.
… We compose our music inspired by the day-to-day happenings as we don’t sing what happens to the dead since we don’t have communication with them as the living human.

Macheso insisted that he has maintained the Sungura flavour in his latest offering, which came 24 years after his debut, Magariro released in 1998. He said:

We cannot say we have diverted from our usual Sungura music, no we just took our works to another level improving on the guitars, but making sure we have remained in the Orchestra Mberikwazvo track and Sungura lane.
We, however, don’t repeat what we would have released before, no we give fans new music that remains within our trademark and known sound that is loved by our paymasters, the fans without monotony.

The songs on the album are Makazvinzwepi, Kutadzirana, Nzendo Dzirefu, Impfa Nimunandi, Ndimi Vanhu Vacho and Munhu Mumwe.
The album launch was a triple celebration for the fans, Macheso and his band as he celebrated his 54th birthday on Friday and the band’s (Orchestra Mberikwazvo) 24th anniversary.

Alick Macheso Explains Latest Album Title

Musician, Mark Ngwazi, says he is not afraid of competition from Sungura rival Alick Macheso.
Ngwazi is set to release his new album on 25 June, a fortnight after Macheso, widely considered one of the best Sungura artistes, releases his album. He told H-Metro:

I am not afraid but I am actually happy that we are all releasing albums in June.
We are not in a competition. It’s only that we are releasing projects during the same period.
My aim is that, as the sungura fraternity, we don’t want to give other genres a chance.
Madzibaba Zakaria recently released an album and soon it will be Macheso then me.
This is the year for sungura in Zimbabwe. I am urging everyone who sings sungura to release projects this year.

Ngwazi will launch his seven-track album, titled Nharo Nezvine Nharo, at Longchen Plaza, in the capital, Harare.
The musician is confident his new offering will be popular with his fans after tracks he sampled at shows have been well-received on social media platforms. He said:

People should expect an impressive album. From what I have gathered now, my album seems to be one of the best projects I have ever done.
The samples I have done, during live shows, are already generating interest on social media.
My fans are already doing videos on TikTok of the unreleased songs.
I promise this project will be the best and it has improved sound as compared to my last projects.

Ngwazi has five albums to his name – Zvandigumbura (2015), Gudo Muriwo (2017), Charger Yetsono (2018), Mudzimu (2019) and Chamugwedugwedu Chamatindike (2020).

Mark Ngwazi "Not Afraid" Of Alick Macheso

Musician Alick Macheso is set to release his 12th album on 10 June, which is his 54th birthday.
Speaking to H-Metro on Wednesday, Macheso said he wants to celebrate his birthday with his fans who have been waiting for four years for a new album. He said:

We have made the decision. The fans have been waiting for four years now.
The album will be out on June 10, which is my birthday.
It is always important to celebrate the gift of life and I want to celebrate with the album.

Macheso’s manager Tich Makahamadze said they have started working on the logistics to ensure a successful event. Said Makahamadze:

The album is coming out on June 10 on his birthday. Like what mudhara (the boss) has said, we have made a decision.
Obviously, the wish is to have a big event where he would be able to meet fans since it coincides with his birthday.
But, we are not going to change even if new COVID-19 measures are to come up restricting gatherings. That then means we will have to launch it virtually.

Macheso has reunited with Noel Nyazanda and Zakaria Zacharia for the first time in 12 years as they worked together on the yet-to-be-named album.

Macheso To Drop New Album On His 54th Birthday

Alick Macheso’s dancer, Selemani Mpochi, popularly known as Majuice, has been acquitted of a rape charge at the Harare Magistrates Court.
Mpochi (34) was accused of raping a 17-year-old girl he had offered a lift in August 2021.
Magistrate Ignatio Mhene ruled that the evidence given by the complainant was not reliable as she reported the matter to the police after being interrogated by her parents.
The magistrate further said the complainant was forced to report the matter to the police by the parents. Said Mhene:

Things got heated at home and the complainant now claims she was raped. The defence was written when they said the two were in love. 
The evidence of the complainant is not credible and cannot be taken seriously.
</blockquote>
Mpochi was represented by his lawyer Ashiel Mugiya, who successfully filed an application for discharge at the close of the State case.
Allegations are that on 20 August 2021, the complainant sent a text message to the dancer begging him to drive her to Kuwadzana the following day for a party.
It is alleged that the next day Mpochi met the complainant and they proceeded to Kuwadzana where he dropped her and went away.
At around 5 pm on the same day, the complainant sent a message to Mpochi advising him that she was not feeling comfortable at the party. She told him to come and pick her up.
The court heard that Mpochi drove and picked the complainant and went to a certain house in Crowborough phase 3 where he had sexual intercourse with her once without her consent.
After the act, it is alleged, Mpochi drove the complainant to her house where she arrived late.
On being quizzed by her mother on why she arrived home late, the complainant initially lied about what had transpired.
However, on the following day, she confessed her ordeal to a friend and the matter was reported to the police leading to Mpochi’s arrest.
