United States Deputy Chief of Mission to Zimbabwe, Thomas Hastings, Wednesday said his country would closely follow Zimbabwe’s March 26 by-elections including the preparations and campaigns.
Hastings told journalists that the by-elections were pivotal for the promotion of democracy. Hastings made the remarks after paying a courtesy call to the Speaker of the National Assembly Jacob Mudenda. He said after the closed-door meeting:

My government is pleased that the by-elections are now going to take place. They were delayed for quite some time because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but we are pleased to see that they are taking place. Democratic conditions of free and fair elections are a key priority for governments all over the world.

In September last year, the United States (US) Embassy in Harare asked the government of Zimbabwe <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/09/23/us-when-will-the-zimbabwean-government-resume-by-elections/">when it was going to resume by-elections</a> after the elections had been suspended indefinitely over the prevalence of the coronavirus. An article posted by Pindula News back then read:

The United States Will Closely Follow Zimbabwe’s March 26 By-elections

The United Kingdom (UK) has claimed that its sanctions on Zimbabwe are asset freezes and travel bans on 5 Zimbabwean individuals for corruption and rights abuses.
UK dismissed claims by the ZANU PF government that the sanctions are behind Zimbabwe’s economic woes as they have, among others, blocked trade. In a series of messages on Twitter, the UK embassy in Zimbabwe said:

Trade between the UK and Zimbabwe was 244m USD last financial year
UK sanctions are asset freezes and travel bans on 5 Zimbabwean individuals for corruption &amp; rights abuses. They don’t stop trade.
Let’s get this straight: the UK imposed asset freezes and a UK travel ban earlier this year on 5 individuals for corruption and serious human rights abuses. The UK has no economic sanctions on Zimbabwe #itsnotsanctions.
The facts: trade between the UK and Zimbabwe was 244m USD last FY, with Zim exports to the UK reaching 55m USD.
The UK and Zimbabwe have a bilateral trade deal which gives Zimbabwe duty &amp; quota-free access to UK markets.

Meanwhile, the United States of America said its sanctions on Zimbabwe were imposed to encourage good governance and to foster democracy. Said the US embassy in Harare:

Advancing democracy, promoting human rights and protecting fundamental freedoms continue to be top priorities for the United States. America stands with the Zimbabwean people as you strive for a more democratic and prosperous future.
The Zimbabwe sanctions program aims to encourage those sanctioned individuals to stop facilitating corruption and start respecting fundamental rights and democratic aspirations.
The U.S. government can lift sanctions once it determines sanctioned individuals have stopped undermining democracy, violating human rights, or facilitating corruption.
</blockquote>
The European Union said none of its restrictive measures on Zimbabwe targets trade. Added the EU delegation in Zimbabwe:

 Zimbabwean goods have a tariff and quota free privileged access to the #EU market as granted by the Economic and Partnership Agreement (#EPA) ratified in 2012.

These statements when Zimbabwe and the rest of SADC are commemorating the Anti-Sanctions Day (25 October).
They are also issued when a United Nations special rapporteur, Alena Douhan, in Zimbabwe on a 10-day visit to ascertain the effects of sanctions imposed on individuals and some corporates in the country.

UK, US, Speak On Zimbabwe's Anti-Sanctions Day

A fresh diplomatic dispute is brewing between Zimbabwe and the United States embassy in Harare over allegations that the U.S. was sectretly planning to train opposition MDC Alliance polling agents to safeguard their vote in the 2023 elections.
On Saturday, Presidential spokesperson George Charamba claimed on his Twitter handle @Jamwanda2 that two unnamed high-ranking MDC Alliance officials approached the US embassy seeking assistance in the training and equipping of 50 election agents ahead of 2023 polls. Charamba tweeted:

CHAMISA-ASSISTED GROSS UNITED STATES INTERFERENCE IN THE POLITICS OF ZIMBABWE: On 21st September 2021, two MDC-CHAMISA officials, one very high-ranking, another standing for youth wing, approached the PUBLIC AFFAIRS SECTION of the US EMBASSY in HARARE with a request for the same to assist with the training and equipping of 50 election agents ahead of 2023 harmonised elections.
An official of @usembassyharare advised them to put together a formal request. In the meantime, @usembassyharare has begun agitating for by-elections in Zimbabwe in which it is a clear contestant through its funded proxy. Unless the two MDC-CHAMISA officials (come) out and explain themselves speedily, I will go a step further to help them out. Meanwhile, @usembassyharare needs to be reminded it is skating on very thin ice in the middle of the Savannah!!!

MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa’s spokesperson Nkululeko Sibanda said there was nothing wrong in the U.S. training MDC Alliance election agents. He said:
<blockquote>
Charamba is speaking from a museum. Why does he think that training of election agents is political interference? It is archaic. There is no interference in the training of election agents.
He actually should be supporting it because it promotes free and fair elections. We cannot enjoy cheated elections. We need reforms that allow us to avoid disputed polls.

Different political analysts attributed Chamisa’s 2018 loss to Mnangagwa to the inadequate deployment of agents to monitor the elections at remote polling stations.
The government and Zanu PF officials have in the past attacked Western embassies, particularly the US and British, for “pushing a regime change agenda.”
Political analyst Eldred Masunungure called for diplomatic solutions to disputes warning that careless attacks on foreign embassies risk complicating the relations of the government and other States.
He added that the law prohibits funding of political parties from outside, including Zanu PF, which has, however, received funds from several governments, China included.
Zanu PF acting spokesperson Mike Bimha dismissed the claims that the governing party had received foreign funding.

Political analyst Mr Alex Munyonga is reported as having said the statement raises a stink from a diplomatic point of view. Munyonga said:

Some scepticism arises as to why a perennial critique of the country’s developmental prospects call for ensuring complete representation of Zimbabwean communities through mass voter registration…
Such blindfolding needs to be unravelled and arrested. It is a proven historical fact that American diplomatic and scientific skills are double edged swords. The seeming courtesy can be analogised to 30 pieces of silver intended to betray our people and our future. The Zimbabwean future is not on sale. Why such interest lest there are congealed intentions of instituting porous hegemonic entry points. Ulterior motives and hidden hostile designs are manifest in the US Embassy’s tweet.

Another political analyst Mr Caution Torovei is quoted as having said Zimbabwe needs to guard against foreigners “dictating to us what needs to be done, the owners of this nation must dictate the pace.” 
The Herald also quotes another political analyst, Mr Collin Mharadzano as having said for a so-called model of democracy to blatantly interfere in the affairs of a sovereign republic speaks volumes of its hatred for the nation and its people.

US: When Will The Zimbabwean Government Resume By-elections?

George Charamba, President Mnangagwa’s spokesperson has claimed that the opposition MDC Alliance received two (2) million COVID-19 vaccines from the United States (US) embassy.
Charamba was responding to a tweet by Harare Mayor, Councillor Jacob Mafume which read:
<blockquote>These are extraordinary times. We have to be vaccinated at a faster pace to protect ourselves &amp; our loved ones. Like <a class="link-complex" data-user-name="hwendec" href="https://twitter.com/hwendec/" rel="noopener user" target="_blank">@hwendec</a> I have had mine: to give our bodies a fighting chance. All &amp; any vaccines are a must. All council clinics should have them.</blockquote>

<blockquote>MDC-Alliance is in a bit of a bind which it now seeks to resolve, abortively aided by the undiplomatic US man here. They have been given two tranches of American vaccines, in total amounting to half a million doses, for a political vaccination programme through which they hope to checkmate the goodwill that has accrued to ZANU-PF through a sprite public vaccination programme. The two vaccines they have been given are not registered in Zimbabwe. Therein lies their dilemma!!! The laws of the country do not allow importation of unregistered vaccines!!!
The US Embassy strategy has been to desperately stampede the Ministry of Health to allow Govt to accept importation and administration of those unregistered vaccines, using Covax facility. This would then provide cover to this political donation. Unfortunately for them, Chinese, Russian and Indian vaccines which are now registered for use in the country, are now registered with the WHO, making them part of the Covax menu. Zimbabwe insists that any assistance under Covax limits itself to those registered vaccines.
The US and their MDC-Alliance lackeys are n a real bind. And so desperate is the US Mission here to have US vaccines registered through executive directive – not through the relevant authorities – that a top Embassy official impudently wrote directly to Health ministry hoping for a directive.
In terms of diplomatic communication etiquette, Embassies write to line ministries through Foreign Office, a route which this top Embassy official decided to sidestep out of desperation. Of course, Foreign Ministry was not amused &amp; rapped knuckles of the official. Meanwhile MDC-Alliance stands unstuck and transfixed, with the item getting repeatedly deferred at their top meeting. Upshot: the new, frenetic pro-vaccination messaging by the MDC-Alliance officials and Party is not a change of heart or greater public health awareness. It is political. Handei tione!!!!!</blockquote>
Some challenged Charamba to present evidence suggesting that he was lying and deliberately politicising vaccines.
Contacted for comment, MDC Alliance’s deputy spokesperson, Clifford Hlatywayo said he was yet to receive any report on the matter.

MDC Alliance Stuck With Unregistered Vaccines From US Embassy - Charamba

The Ministry on International Relations and Foreign Trade has released a statement that sternly warns the US Ambassador against attacking the Zimbabwean government because according to the statement his “attacks” can only further worsen the diplomatic relations between Washington and Harare, The Herald reports.
The Ministry was responding to the interview <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/08/24/sadc-should-address-zimbabwes-human-rights-abuses-ambassador-nichols-speaks-for-the-first-time-after-being-called-a-thug/">Ambassador Nichols had with a South African publication Times Live in which he said SADC</a> was supposed to take action against the Zimbabwean government.
The strong-worded statement constantly pointed out that Ambassador Nichols was contravening the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations act in “attacking” Zimbabwe.
The statement which further sells the government’s narrative that there is no crisis in Zimbabwe because there is freedom of the press, the judiciary is not captured and there are no human rights violations reads in part:
<blockquote>The Zimbabwe Government once again expresses its utter dismay at the actions by the United States Ambassador Mr Brian Nichols in continuing to make disparaging public comments and attacks on the Zimbabwe Government’s political and economic programmes in clear violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which governs the rules for the exchange and treatment of envoys between States, as well as their behaviour.
This is despite a reminder from the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Affairs in October 2019 that such activities were at variance with the obligations placed on a diplomatic mission, representative or agent of a foreign government by the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations to respect the rules of diplomatic conduct,” the statement from Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade reads.
Furthermore, diplomatic channels for communication of any concerns to the Zimbabwe Government do exist and Ambassador Nichols is encouraged to make use of these, instead of engaging in the megaphone diplomacy of casting aspersions on the Zimbabwe Government and dabbling in local politics including pushing an agenda meant to prop up the fortunes of an opposition which is trying to sell a dummy to the world, that there is a political crisis in Zimbabwe. The truth of the matter is that there simply is no such crisis in Zimbabwe.
Ambassador Nichols’ actions are objectionable and stand in contravention of Diplomatic Missions’ obligations under the Vienna Convention.  The Ambassador has a responsibility to carry out his legitimate functions without unduly attacking the Zimbabwe Government. He is therefore urged to cease forthwith any actions which result in not only further harming relations between Zimbabwe and the United States, but are also a flagrant violation of protocol, etiquette and the basic tenets of the Vienna Convention
Contrary to claims by Ambassador Nichols that Zimbabwe lacked democracy and that the Government ignored human rights, Zimbabwe actually has a vibrant democracy which is buttressed by a free Press and an independent judiciary and the Government respects the rights of Zimbabweans</blockquote>
Late last month the ruling party attacked the American Ambassador and called him a thug before threatening to expel him.

<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/10/31/full-text-were-tolerant-not-weak-zimbabwe-tells-usa/">A stern threat issued by the foreign minister to US Ambassador to Zimbabwe</a> might just jeopardise re-engagement efforts analysts have said.
According to the Standard, here is what analysts said concerning Moyo’s warning to Nichols:

However, one analyst Sharon Hofisi said Moyo knew what he was doing and he didn’t erode the chances or re-engagement completely:

A United States of America Company, Zura Southern Africa is planning to develop a Logistics Hub in Kanyemba. This was revealed by the US Embassy In Harare on twitter after Ambassador met with 2 people from Zura Southern Africa, Thulani Mpofu and Dareen Moore.
The Embassy posted a photo of the 3 guys meeting and captioned it:
<blockquote>Amb. Brian A. Nichols met Darren Moore and Thulani Mpofu from Zura Southern Africa, a U.S. company with a great plan to develop a logistics hub at Kanyemba. The embassy supports Zura’s project which will deepen regional trade and promote Zimbabwe’s economic growth.</blockquote>
Zura will be another American Company to invest in Zimbabwe apart from <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/10/05/general-electric-subsidiary-to-rehabilitate-kariba-hydroelectric-dam-spillway-for-53-6-million/">General Electic which has projects with ZPC to rehabilitate part of Kariba.</a>

US Company Plans To Develop A Logistics Hub At Kanyemba.

US ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr. Brian Nichols has said that he and several other diplomats representing Western and Asian countries and regional bodies are impressed by legislative reforms which are currently underway in Zimbabwe.
Speaking on behalf of diplomats from the European Union, the UK, Australia, Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Germany, ambassador Nichols said:
<blockquote>This was an important opportunity for all the friends of Zimbabwe to gather to discuss the agenda in parliament and to benefit from Honourable Speaker Mudenda’s views on what is going on in the legislative agenda and all of us where impressed by the length and breadth of the legislative reforms that are on-going, some of them have been passed, some of them are being debated and some of them at various formulation stage.</blockquote>
The diplomats had paid a courtesy call on Speaker of the National Assembly Advocate Jacob Mudenda today.
