Tropical Storm Ana had claimed the lives of more than seventy (70) people by Thursday and caused extensive damage to infrastructure in three southern African countries.
The storm made landfall on Monday in Madagascar before ripping across Mozambique and Malawi.
The full extent of the damage caused by Tropical Storm Ana in the three countries was yet to be quantified.
Madagascar has reported 41 dead, with 18 others killed in Mozambique and 11 in Malawi.
The dissipating storm also passed over Zimbabwe, bringing more than 120mm of rainfall in Nyanga in 24 hours but no deaths have been reported.
In Madagascar, Mozambique and Malawi, tens of thousands of homes were damaged, with some collapsed under the heavy rain, trapping victims in the rubble.
Bridges were destroyed by flooded rivers, while livestock drowned and submerged fields, destroying the livelihoods of rural families.
Mozambique’s weather service has forecasted another storm to form over the Indian Ocean in the coming days.
Up to six tropical cyclones are expected before the rainy season ends in March.

Tropical Storm Ana Kills More Than 70 In Southern Africa

Media reports in Mauritius indicate that an intense Tropical Cyclone is brewing in the Indian Ocean, about 5 000km east of the island.
Weather experts are currently monitoring moderate Tropical Storm Batsirai which has intensified to a Tropical Cyclone and may reach Mauritius in February.
The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) on Thursday said it will continue monitoring the situation and advising members of the public. It said:

The current system being monitored, Tropical Cyclone Batsirai, is still 5 000 kilometres to the east of the country and may only reach Mauritius in February.
We are still in the main rain season as well as the South-West Indian Ocean Cyclone season, thus, more rainfall is anticipated.

Meanwhile, Tropical Depression ANA has dissipated, with rainfall of below 50mm recorded across the country on Wednesday. The MSD said:

Out of the rain that occurred [on Wednesday] (as Tropical Depression ANA eased off), all amounts were below 50mm, with the highest being 47mm (Binga), 43mm (Mukandi), 40mm (Lupane), 33mm (Chisumbanje), 29mm (Buffalo Range), 26mm (Mutare), 27mm (Chinhoyi), 27mm (Joshua Nkomo Airport), 26mm (Gokwe) and 25mm (Hwange).
Meanwhile, a relatively moist north-easterly airflow is entering the Zimbabwean air-space.

Weather Experts Monitor Tropical Cyclone Batsirai

Nyanga has received 121mm of rainfall as the Moderate Tropical Storm Ana tracked over the northeastern parts of Zimbabwe on Tuesday.
In its regular weather update late on Tuesday afternoon, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) said the tropical storm downgraded to an an Overland Depression after making landfall in Mozambique. The MSD said:

The Moderate Tropical Storm “ANA” made landfall yesterday over the north coast of Mozambique and dumped a lot of moisture in northern Mozambique before evolving into an Overland Depression.
Since then, the Overland Depression has been moving westward; and as of today afternoon, its centre was over the northeastern parts of Zimbabwe, near Cahora-Bassa.
This Overland Depression is moving westward along the Zambezi Valley, causing heavy rain along its path.
However, the extent of its cloud cover and moisture covered much of the country with heavier falls along the Eastern Highland due to orographic rainfall under the influence of a south-easterly airflow.
As such, the highest falls were at Nyanga (121mm), Chisengu (80mm), Nyamaropa (32mm), Mutare (28mm) and Mukandi (25mm).

Meanwhile, the weather forecaster said on Wednesday (tomorrow), heavy rains (in excess 50mm) and strong winds are expected in Mashonaland West and Manicaland Provinces.
The Met Department forecasted light rains and moderate to strong winds over Harare Metropolitan Midlands provinces, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Masvingo and all Matabeleland provinces.

Tropical Storm Ana: Nyanga Receives 121mm Of Rainfall

Tropical Storm Ana made landfall over the Nampula province of Mozambique on Monday after crossing the Mozambique Channel from Madagascar amid indications that it was starting to lose energy.
A tropical storm ranks above a tropical depression but below a tropical cyclone.
According to the <a href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/climo/?text#:~:text=They%20are%20classified%20as%20follows,(64%20knots)%20or%20higher.">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)</a>, a tropical depression has maximum sustained winds of 38 mph or less, a tropical storm has maximum sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph, while a tropical cyclone has maximum sustained winds of 74 mph.
Tropical Storm Ana lost energy over Madagascar, then as a depression, it picked up more energy as it moved west across the Mozambique Channel, and was reclassified as a moderate tropical storm.
However, by last night, Ana was starting to lose energy again and fairly soon, it will degenerate back into a tropical depression before fading out.
Meanwhile, the Department of Civil Protection (DCP) said that it had put in place what are now the normal precautions to deal with flooding or other effects emanating from heavy rainfall and strong winds.
DCP director, Nathan Nkomo, on Monday said his department had engaged the Grain Marketing Board to release 50 tonnes of maize per province for people who may be affected by floods.
He also said two Air Force of Zimbabwe helicopters were put on standby for transport or to evacuate people who may be marooned by floods. Said Nkomo:

If there is a need for evacuations, ZUPCO will be on standby to move people into evacuation centres.
Since school children are not in school, we will use the schools to accommodate those in need.

Manicaland Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Edgars Seenza, said all district civil protection units were spreading information to people about Tropical Storm Ana. Said Seenza:

We are also using texts and WhatsApp messages so that many people are aware of the heavy rains expected.
We are urging people in flood-prone areas to move to higher grounds and identified evacuation centres across the province.
Those moving to evacuation centres should carry food that will last for three or four days, bedding and their medication.
So far, we have not received any reports of areas receiving very high rainfall, save for Nyanga which received 11mm today (yesterday).
