Former Zimbabwe cricketer <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Henry_Olonga">Henry Olonga</a> has said he is now a musician after his cricket international career was prematurely terminated in 2005 when he stood up against “oppression” by the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Robert_Mugabe">Robert Mugabe</a> regime.
The Australian-based Zimbabwean national, together with <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Andy_Flower">Andy Flower</a>, embarked on the famous black-armband protest which was held in their opening match against Namibia at the World Cup.
The protest came as the Mugabe administration had started implementing the fast-track land reform programme.
Olonga and Flower never played for Zimbabwe again, and Olonga retired prematurely from international cricket. Initially charged with treason (punishable by death in Zimbabwe), Olonga faced multiple arrest warrants and death threats. He fled the country in 2003 and lived in exile in Britain for 12 years.
Speaking to PTI, sitting in an Adelaide coffee shop, Olonga recollected what his life was like 15 years back. He said:

I am a singer now. There is a lot of music in my life. I just did a couple of shows last Friday. My first solo performance without our band. It was just me and the audience.
Post cricket, I did a lot of things, I played for Lashings XI along with the great Sachin Tendulkar for a couple of matches. VVS Laxman also played. I did a few commentary gigs many moons back.
Life then kind of took me to different directions. I have two daughters, elder one soon to be 12 and younger one is 10. My wife is an Australian citizen and I have applied for Australian citizenship too. Hope to get it sometime soon.
And once I qualify, you never know, you might see me on athletics track. Throwing javelin.

Olonga said he had to leave Zimbabwe following death threats. 
He says he has various ventures of mine and is also into art, public speaking and “maybe a bit of acting.” 
Olonga played 80 international games for Zimbabwe which included 30 Tests (68 wickets) and 50 ODIs (58 wickets). Nothing extraordinary and he doesn’t even make any tall claims about his cricketing career.

Former Zimbabwe Cricketer Henry Olonga Says He Is Now A Musician

Former Zimbabwean cricketer, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Grant_Flower">Grant William Flower</a> who is now Sri Lanka’s batting coach, is in isolation after testing positive for Covid-19 ahead of a home series against India.
The cricket board in Colombo said on Friday that the 50-year-old Grant who is <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Andy_Flower">Andy Flower’s</a> brother had returned from England where Sri Lanka played a one-day and Twenty20 international series.
Grant was preparing for next week’s India games when he showed coronavirus symptoms. The board said:
<blockquote>_Immediately upon identification, Flower was isolated from the rest of the team members who are undergoing quarantine following their return from England._</blockquote>
The board added that Flower showed “mild symptoms”, prompting a Covid-19 test.
Soon after the Sri Lanka team’s return, three players and four support staff members of the England team tested positive for Covid-19.
The trio of Sri Lankan players, who violated their bio-secure bubble just before the start of their one-day international series in Durham, were recalled and are facing disciplinary action.

Former Zimbabwean Cricketer Flower In Isolation With COVID-19

Zimbabwean pace bowler Blessing Muzarabani and his coach Andy Flower are one win away from being crowned champions of the Pakistan Cricket Premier League.
Their Multan Sultans side faces Islamabad United on Monday, with the winner booking a place in Thursday’s final.
To get to Monday’s position, Sultans finished second with five wins from 10 games in the six-team table.
Mohammad Rizwan is the leading run-scorer for Multan Sultans with 470 at a strike rate of 131. He has struck 54 fours and nine sixes.
Sohaib Maqsood is their second-best batsman with 304 runs at a strike rate of 154.
Shahnawaz Dhani has been their best bowler with 20 wickets at an average of 13 and an economy rate (the average number of runs conceded for each over bowled) of 8.19.

Muzarabani has so far picked up five wickets in the four group matches that he has played.
The paceman did not make the cut in the original PSL draft earlier this year, but his impressive performances in the recent tour of Zimbabwe by Pakistan caught the interest of the Sultans.

Zimbabwe Cricket legend, Andy Flower was on Saturday named among 10 inductees <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/06/14/zimbabwe-cricket-legend-andy-flower-inducted-in-icc-hall-of-fame/">into the International Cricket Council (ICC)’s Hall of Fame.</a>
Flower, widely considered to be Zimbabwe’s best player of all time, has 4 794 Test runs at 51.54 including a match-saving unbeaten 232 against India at Nagpur in 2000.
His international career ended during the 2003 World Cup where, together with team-mate Henry Olonga, he wore a black armband in protest at what the pair said was “the death of democracy” in Zimbabwe.

SRC Congratulates Andy Flower On Being Inducted Into ICC's Hall Of Fame

Zimbabwean cricket legend Andy Flower was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame on Saturday, becoming the first Zimbabwean to get the prestigious recognition.
Flower was among nine other legends of the game who were also inducted yesterday, taking the illustrious list of ICC Hall of Famers to a total of 103.
The nine are Monty Noble (Australia), Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka), Aubrey Faulkner (South Africa), Learie Constantine (West Indies), Stan McCabe (Australia), Vinoo Mankad (India), Ted Dexter (England), Bob Willis (England), and Desmond Haynes (West Indies).
Following Flower’s induction, Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani hailed the 53-year-old former Zimbabwe captain as a true legend of the sport. Said Mukuhlani:
<blockquote>ZC would like to congratulate Andy on his induction into the ICC Hall of Fame. This is an absolutely awesome and well-deserved acknowledgement that has immortalised him as one of the world’s greatest cricket players ever.
We are not only proud of our true legend for the latest honour bestowed upon him, but also grateful to him for the immense contributions that he has made and continues to make to cricket on and off the field.</blockquote>
Flower played 63 Test matches as a wicketkeeper-batsman for Zimbabwe, scoring 4 794 runs at an average of 51,54 and taking 151 catches and nine stumpings.
He also featured in 213 one-day international (ODI) matches, scoring 6 786 runs at an average of 35,34 and taking 141 catches and 32 stumpings.
Flower also remains the only player to score an ODI hundred on debut in a World Cup match after he announced his arrival on the big stage with an unbeaten 115 against Sri Lanka on February 23, 1992, at New Plymouth in New Zealand.
Flower holds the Zimbabwean records for the most Test career runs, the highest Test batting average and most ODI career runs.
His 12 centuries and 27 fifties in Test cricket as well as 55 ODI fifties have also not been surpassed by any other Zimbabwean player.
Flower’s international career came to an end during the 2003 World Cup when he and the fast bowler Henry Olonga wore black armbands during all of Zimbabwe’s games to protest what they termed “the death of democracy” in their country.
He continued playing county cricket in England thereafter, before turning to coach and masterminding England’s climb to the No. 1 ranking in Test cricket in 2011.

Former Zimbabwe cricketer, Henry longa has said that the government’s response to his and Andy Flower’s famous black-armband protest which was held in their opening match against Namibia at the World Cup was to mourn the “death of democracy” in Zimbabwe was uncalled for.
The protest came as the Mugabe administration had started implementing the fast track land reform programme.
Speaking to Forbes India in an interview, Olonga said that they were aware of the consequences of staging that protest adding that the cause made them do the dangerous thing. He said:
<blockquote>But we were young and bold. We had a cause and we stuck to it. But I will say that the consequences far outweighed what we did. What we did was to criticise the government and their reaction was way over the top. But that’s politics for you in Zimbabwe. Some people love us for what we did, some of them hate us.</blockquote>
Olonga and Flower never played for Zimbabwe again, and Olonga retired prematurely from international cricket. "Consequences Far Outweighed What We Did," Olonga Speaks On Black-Armband Protest

Former Zimbabwe cricket captain and England coach, Andy Flower, said that he is hopeful that Zimbabwe will rise from the ashes following the death of Robert Mugabe.
Flower is remembered for wearing a black armband alongside fellow cricketer, Henry Olonga, a stunt which made them “enemies of the state”.
In a statement released to the PA news agency, Flower opined that Mugabe was not a good man who oppressed his people. He said:
<blockquote>I am very obviously reticent to praise Robert Mugabe in any way. He was not a good man. He subjugated his people and allowed a small group of his chosen elite — his partners in crime — to fleece the country.
He has acted with incredible cruelty to the average Zimbabwean, completely mismanaging what could be a thriving economy.
I shook hands with him on a number of occasions in my role as a Zimbabwean cricketer but never conversed with him.
The opportunity to do so certainly disappeared after the black armband protest with Henry Olonga in 2003 to mourn the death of democracy in Zimbabwe. We wanted to highlight the human rights abuses occurring at the time.
I do believe, that given the chance, the country’s young, with a zealous focus on integrity and growth could once again see Zimbabwe thrive and push towards a rightful place as a role model for other African countries.</blockquote>
Flower, however, does not see Zimbabwe progressing under the current leadership of President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
He expressed hope that the “New Dispensation” will end soon to clear the path for the country’s development.

Andy Flower, former Zimbabwe’s cricketer feels that he could have done better to handle the racial issues within the cricket team during his time.
He is believed to be one of a few cricketers who advocated racial integration within the national team and Zimbabwean cricket. During those days, cricket was an elite game reserved for white people.
Writing the foreword for Tatenda Taibu’s autobiography, Keeper of Faith, Flower, said:

I think that (former South Africa captain) Graeme Smith and the people around him handled a similar situation in South Africa with more wisdom and with a better understanding of the bigger picture. It must have been difficult for youngsters such as Tatenda and his friends Hamilton Masakadza, Stuart Matsikenyeri and Vusi Sibanda, but I think they handled themselves extremely well.</blockquote>
He also explained that wars fought against the Zimbabwe Cricket Union had nothing to do with the recommended quota system aimed at promoting black participation. He said that racial issues coincided with remuneration issues which were already ongoing. He, however, indicated that there were some white players who resented the idea of bringing in the black players.
Flower noted that in the 1990s, indications that cricket could no longer be only a reserve for the whites started emerging. He noted that a number of black cricketers emerged on the scene but Tatenda Taibu proved to be way above others.

Flower Admits It Must Have Been Difficult For Black Cricketers

Zimbabwean veteran cricketer will take up the role of Director of England Cricket after substantive director, Andrew Strauss, announced he’s going away on compassionate leave to support his cancer-diagnosed wife. The period will be at least 3 months.
The role means Flower is effectively the leader of all the England’s national teams.
<blockquote>“Andy Flower is going to be stepping in for me over the course of the summer. We all know about his qualities and his experience of both England and English cricket and he will fill in my shoes very adequately.</blockquote>
Flower, who is former Zimbabwean cricketer and a former captain for Zimbabwe national cricket, is currently coach of the England Lions. As a coach, Flower won series in India and Australia and guided England to the top of the world Test rankings in 2011.

Andy Flower Stands In As England Cricket Director

Former Zimbabwe cricket captain Andy Flower has been selected to be the coach of a World XI squad to face Pakistan in September. The World XI which will be made up of players from seven test playing countries will play Pakistan in three Twenty20 matches for the Independence Cup. Unfortunately, there are no Zimbabwean players selected for the fourteen man World XI.

Flower won the 2010 ICC World Twenty20 tournament in the West Indies as well the Ashes in 2010/11 and 2013 as England coach. His England team was ranked first among test countries in the world in 2011.
