Health organisations have demanded that the government should prioritise Anti-RetroViral (ARV) drugs when allocating foreign currency in the same it prioritises energy and fuel. This comes as the country is facing a shortage of ARVs after the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe failed to allocate any foreign currency needed to procure the drugs.
The Community Working Group on Health (CWGH) executive director, Itai Rusike said:
<blockquote>It is professionally unacceptable that the situation was allowed to deteriorate to these levels when the country has the Ministry of Health and Child Care and the National AIDS Council, institutions that jointly superintends over the procurement and distribution of the living-saving drugs.
Both institutions must have raised the red flag well before the situation reached this crisis point if proper monitoring procedures were in place.
The CWGH proposed that foreign currency be prioritised for ARV access (i.e. ARVs be ranked with energy and fuel as a priority claimant on foreign currency) or ARVs would have to be purchased from private sector suppliers at very high prices.</blockquote>

Government should prioritise ARV drugs when allocating foreign currency

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Child Care Dr. Gerald Gwinji has revealed that the government is expecting 26 3000 bottles of second line anti-retroviral (ARV) drugs on the 25th of the month. He revealed that an estimated 35 000 people on second lines ARVs will get at least a month’s supply of the drugs.

Minister of Health and Child Care Dr David Parirenyatwa has revealed that at least 35 percent of people on antiretroviral drugs have been placed on the second line treatment because they were not recovering on first line treatment. He urged people on treatment to take their drugs religiously to avoid building resistance.
Said Parirenyatwa:
<blockquote>We are now aware that 35 percent of our people are on second line drugs which means there is some resistance. It is, however, not always resistance that they are put on second line, sometimes you just react to the first line drugs
We need to continue educating our people that if you are on ARVs, take them religiously otherwise you foster resistance.</blockquote>
The second line treatment is more expensive, while the third line is even more expensive.
