The People’s Republic of China has called for the removal of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe saying they affect the Southern African’s capability to grow the economy. Pindula News presents a statement issued by the Asian country’s Foreign Affairs Ministry.

China Daily: According to media reports, the UN Special Rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights observed in Harare on October 28 that unilateral sanctions imposed by Western countries including the US and the UK on Zimbabwe has a devastating impact on Zimbabwe’s economy and also violates the Zimbabwean people’s human rights, including the right to life, food, health, development and education, as well as economic and cultural rights. The Special Rapporteur called on relevant countries to lift the sanctions as soon as possible. Does the Chinese side have any comment?
Wang Wenbin: We noted relevant reports. In recent years, African countries have been calling on the US and other Western countries and organizations to lift unilateral sanctions on Zimbabwe as soon as possible. I stated China’s position on this last week. Africa’s call for justice has our unreserved support.
The observation by the UN Special Rapporteur shows once again that unilateral sanctions have had a debilitating impact on Zimbabwe’s capability to grow the economy and improve public welfare and on the Zimbabwean people’s daily life and enjoyment of various rights. The international community is increasingly repulsed by these sanctions. Human rights is a favorite subject of Western countries including the US, but what they practice runs counter to what they preach. 
China firmly opposes all unilateral sanctions and firmly supports the Zimbabwean people’s rejection of external interference and pursuit of an independent development path. Once again we solemnly urge certain organizations and countries including the US to lift illegal sanctions on Zimbabwe at an early date and earnestly help the Zimbabwean people to combat COVID-19 and revitalize the economy.

Sanctions Affect Zimbabwe's Capability To Grow The Economy - China

The aides of MDC Alliance leader, Nelson Chamisa, were attacked by “drunken youths” allegedly sent by ZANU PF official Ezra Chadzamira.
The attack took place in the Charumbira area in Masvingo this Monday. The assailants who were waving placards denouncing “sanctions” blocked a road and attacked the aides. Posting on Twitter, MDC Alliance said:

The British House of Lords on Wednesday discussed the possibility of imposing fresh sanctions on Zimbabwe following reports that Ms Henrietta Rushwaya, president of the Zimbabwe Mining Federation was arrested trying to smuggle six (6) kgs of gold.
Speaking during the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/10/29/rushwayas-corruption-case-spills-into-uk-parliament/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">question-and-answer session in the House of Lords, UK</a> Minister of State for Overseas Territories and Sustainable Development Baroness Elizabeth Sugg said the UK was contemplating a new round of coercive measures against its former colony.
She was responding to a question raised by British MP and former anti-apartheid campaigner, Lord Peter Hain who asked what specific steps the UK government was taking to sanction Zimbabwe for bad governance. Sugg said:
<blockquote>My Lords, the UK remains aligned to the EU’s restrictive measures on Zimbabwe.
Suspended targeted measures are in place against three current and former security sector chiefs, and (former First Lady) Grace Mugabe.
The Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act 2018 now provides the legal basis for the UK to impose autonomous sanctions, and we are in the process of considering our approach to the future sanctions regime in Zimbabwe.</blockquote>
Debate on Zimbabwe was triggered by Lord Andrew St John of Bletso, who speaks on African affairs and is an expert on southern Africa.
He had asked what the UK intends to do with Zimbabwe following reports of continued human rights violations and corruption involving Mnangagwa and his relatives, in an apparent reference to Rushwaya’s gold smuggling case.
This comes as <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/10/25/watch-anti-sanctions-protests-in-various-parts-of-the-country/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe joined the rest of SADC countries in calling for the removal of sanctions</a> imposed two decades ago.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s Foreign Affairs minister <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/10/29/full-text-we-dont-need-your-constant-supervision-or-correction-sb-moyo-responds-the-uks-invasive-interest-in-our-internal-affairs/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Sibusiso Moyo has expressed surprise at the level of UK’s “invasive interest in our internal affairs”</a> adding that the Southern African country does not need constant supervision or correction.

UK Threatens New Sanctions On Zimbabwe

The United Kingdom’s ambassador to Zimbabwe Mrs Melanie Robinson has reiterated that her country did not impose trade restrictions on Zimbabwe amid confusion as to what is really entailed by the sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe.
Her remarks come as Zimbabwe and the Southern African Community Development at large are gearing up for 25 October a day set aside by the regional body to call for the unconditional removal of sanctions.
Mrs Robinson posted on Twitter as the ruling ZANU PF has often cited sanctions as one of the leading factors that have affected its bid to run the country well. She posted:

The diplomat speaks after the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/10/24/uk-minister-for-africa-speaks-on-zim-sanctions/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">UK’s Minister for Africa had said his country imposed sanctions on a few individuals for violation of human rights.</a>
Sanctions were imposed on the country two decades ago following the controversial fast track land reform programme that left many white farmers landless.
A number of government officials and some senior army officials, as well as some companies they own or control, are on the sanctions list.
ZANU PF says the coercive measures are only meant to champion the regime change agenda in the former British colony.
The party also attributes the country’s deepening economic woes to sanctions but the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/10/24/united-states-says-corruption-not-sanctions-is-hurting-zimbabwes-economy/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">USA says Zimbabwe’s bad governance is the leading factor in the demise of the economy.</a>

"No UK Trade Embargo On Zimbabwe," - UK Diplomat

The Zimbabwean government has invited opposition MDC Alliance and MDC-T to call for the removal of sanctions which were imposed on the country following the controversial fast-track land reform programme.
The invitation is made ahead of the SADC anti-corruption day, 25 October, during which regional leaders will be calling upon Western powers to remove the sanctions.
Secretary for Information, Nick Mangwana said other political parties, churches and businesses had already the anti-sanctions campaign. He said:
<blockquote>We have joined hands with other progressive stakeholders such as business, political parties, and civil society to hold this year’s anti-sanctions e-gala. We extend an invitation to the MDC-T and MDC-A and others to come and give a shout against sanctions.</blockquote>
MDC-T secretary for finance, Tapiwa Mashakada told NewZimbabwe that the party led by Thokozani Khupe was against the imposition of the corrective measures.
He added that Khupe was engaging Western powers in her capacity as the chair of the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD) to lobby for the removal of the coercive measures and re-engagement of Zimbabwe with the international community.

MDC-A, MDC-T Invited To The Anti-Corruption Campaign

Zimbabwe’s liberation warfighters have said the country has enough resources to grow its economy without getting assistance from the international community.
They speak as the Southern African country and indeed the whole of SADC are gearing up for the anti-sanctions day commemorations slated for 25 October.
The government is pushing for the removal of sanctions which are considered to be among the leading factors choking efforts to transform the fortunes of a once vibrant economy.
Speaking to ZBC News, the chairperson of the War Veterans Association for Bulawayo, Cephas Ncube said as the government works on the re-engagement strategy, locals must tap into local resources to build a sustainable economic base. He said:
<blockquote>While there is dialogue on the removal of sanctions, the full exploitation of natural resources such as minerals, land solar power and water, could actually grow our economy and all that is needed is for us to put our heads together and agree on how we are going to work as a nation to build our country using what we have and this can work well for us.</blockquote>
The issue of sanctions has divided the nation with some, especially in the opposition, saying they should remain intact until Zimbabwe has implemented the much-needed reforms.
Some say the coercive measures should be lifted, “yesterday,” as they have a huge adverse impact on the general populace.
Sanctions were imposed on Zimbabwe following the fast track land reform at the turn of the millennium which was characterised by the widespread violation of human rights.

We've Enough Resources For Economic Growth - War Veterans

The Zimbabwean government has said it is building the country despite the presence of sanctions imposed on the Southern African country by Western powers on the turn of the millennium.
These remarks were said by Nick Mangwana the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services as the country gears up for <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/08/19/sadc-proclaims-october-25-zimbabwe-anti-sanctions-day/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">25 October, the anti-sanctions day as declared by SADC.</a>
Posting on Twitter this Monday, Mangwana said:

Western states imposed the coercive measures on Zimbabwe following the controversial fast track land reform programme that was marred by widespread human rights violations.
Although the sanctions are allegedly “targeted on a few individuals” in the ruling ZANU PF and the army as well as companies they own, the Zimbabwean government and other observers claim that the measures have a spillover effect on the general populace.
Recently, law expert and leader of opposition National Constitutional Assembly, Professor Lovemore Madhuku said sanctions were not appropriate as a corrective measure.
This is happening when the ruling ZANU PF has over the years attributed the economic, humanitarian and political crises to sanctions imposed on the country.
Some say bad governance by the governing party is the leading factor in the demise of the once vibrant economy.

We're Building Zimbabwe Despite Sanctions - Govt

Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Sibusiso Moyo (SB) has said that relations between Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom were improving.
He made the remarks during an interview with The Herald’s Deputy Editor, Ranga Mataire (RM) during which he discussed the impact of the coronavirus pandemic to the country’s engagement and re-engagement drive.
Below are excerpts from the interview.
<blockquote>RM: So why this perpetuation of sanctions by the same Britain which you say was the instigator of the economic embargo in the EU? 
SB: We have had incessant calls by Britain and other countries to institute various reforms and President Mnangagwa has embarked on implementing a wide range of reforms that also give confidence that the international community, including UK will welcome this as a basis not to continue the isolation of Zimbabwe. You will recall that even on the fiscal front, these reforms have resulted in the New Dispensation now progressively achieving monthly budgetary surplus as opposed to perennial monthly budgetary deficit. The recent rating by World Bank has also upgraded our position to number 51 out of about 170 countries.
RM: From what you are saying, it means there is hope that relations between Zimbabwe and Britain will turn for the good? 
SB: Removing sanctions is a process not an event, but our expectations are that very soon we are going to have meetings between ourselves and the EU. These meetings are the ones that result in understanding of certain facts.  What complicated or dented the process that we had initiated was the changes that we have had in UK. We waited for the changes to settle in so that we could resume bilateral engagements. It’s usually easier to have virtual meetings with somebody you have met before.  At the moment, the focus of most leaders is on saving lives and it is not the ideal time to let someone refocus on something else.</blockquote>

"Cuba Is Doing Just Fine Under Sanctions," President Mnangagwa's Advisor

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said the European Union has taken positive steps in repealing sanctions it had imposed on Zimbabwe. He urged the union to remove the remaining restrictions adding that this would enhance relations between Zimbabwe and the union’s member states.
He said the remarks whilst addressing the 33rd African Heads of State and Government summit at the African Union that is underway in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Nehanda Radio columnist, Sibanengi Dube has said that the opposition MDC wants the removal of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by Western countries and those imposed on the country by the ruling ZANU PF removed.
Dube observed that the ruling Zanu PF, through “bad governance, illegitimacy, corruption, abductions, and state-sanctioned human rights abuses” has brought great suffering to the general populace. He added:
<blockquote>MaChinjas want both internal and external sanctions to go.
The country is in a comatose state largely due to selfish and corrupt leaders who lack popular electoral mandate from the majority of Zimbabweans. At the core of the national collapse is a crisis of leadership, crisis of governance and crisis of legitimacy.</blockquote>
He also claimed that Zimbabwean crises are a result of a “visionless and unpopular government” rather than sanctions imposed by Western states on “individuals” or “restrictions on international financial support.”
Dube said that only good governance practices can help the country to rise from its woes.

Nehanda Radio columnist, Tinomudaishe Chinyoka has expressed concern over the United States of America’s double standards as far as imposition of sanctions is concerned.
Chinyoka observed that there are several countries which to date are not under the US sanctions despite their bad record on human rights violations.
He posted a detailed report on human violations by Kenya and said:
<blockquote>It is the latest Human Rights Report on Kenya. Kenya whose president was indicted by the ICC on very serious crimes relating to politically motivated violence. Kenya, whose President was, oops, a guest at the White House in August 2018, just around the same time when Nairobi police were summarily executing that suspected carjacker.
Are there American sanctions against Kenya? I know that Trevor Ncube, in his interview with Brian Nichols, failed to ask this question, but we must ask. Where are the American sanctions against Kenya? Ever heard of them? Nor I.</blockquote>
For him, if sanctions were imposed based on a country’s level of violation of human rights, surely, Kenya and Rwanda could have been sanctioned before Zimbabwe since reports by the same USA suggest that there are serious violations of human rights compared to Zimbabwe.

"Our Record On Human Rights Is Better Than Of Many Countries Not Under Sanctions," OPINION

The ruling ZANU PF is considering enacting laws that will ban advocating for sanctions on the country by Zimbabwean nationals.
Speaking on the sidelines of a government-organised anti-sanctions march in Harare on Friday, ZANU PF party Chief Whip, Pupurayi Togarepi, said:
<blockquote>You will see from now going forward that those who go out looking for sanctions, talking to foreign forces against the people of Zimbabwe, asking for sanctions to be imposed on our people, as parliamentarians we will ensure we take a stance against them.
It is not going to be business as usual.</blockquote>
His remarks come as there are reports that opposition MDC leaders including Nelson Chamisa and Tendai Biti, went to the USA to beg that country for the extension of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe two decades ago.
Meanwhile, the opposition MDC is saying that the government is bringing suffering upon itself, by failing to respect human rights. The party also argues that the agony which the government is inflicting on the masses outweighs, by far, the suffering brought on them by sanctions.

"It's Not Going To Be Business As Usual," ZANU PF Speaks On Sanctions Advocates

Zambia president, Edgar Lungu has declared 25 October an official holiday in that country to appreciate the sacrifice made by freedom fighters during the struggle for independence.
The development comes after Zimbabwean authorities have declared the day an official holiday as they want the nation to march against sanctions imposed on the country which they say were sabotaging the economy.
The day was at the instigation of Zimbabwe declared an Anti-Sanctions day by SADC at the last SADC leaders summit held in Dar es Salaam in August this year.
The Western community, on the turn of the millennium, imposed sanctions on Zimbabwean officials and entities for alleged human rights abuses.
The sanctions followed the “bloody” fast-track land reform which resulted in white farmers dispossessed of the farms they owned.

Zambia President Declares 25 October An Official Holiday, For Other Reasons

The acting Information Minister, Professor Amon Murwira on Monday told a post-cabinet media briefing that the government shall make the anti-sanctions day, 5 October an official public holiday.
The government has already lined up a number of activities including a football match between Highlanders and Dynamos and a music gala as well as an anti-sanctions march in the capital, Harare and at Provincial and District levels across the country. Speaking to reporters, Murwira said:
<blockquote>To further amplify the importance of this day to the economic emancipation and well-being of Zimbabwe, Friday 25 October 2019 shall be declared an official public holiday.</blockquote>
The development comes after SADC countries passed a resolution to declare 25 October a day against-sanctions imposed by the West on Zimbabwe.
Meanwhile, some local analysts have criticised the event <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/10/21/eu-anti-sanctions-lobby-a-waste-of-time/">saying that it was time</a> and <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/10/21/anti-sanctions-march-to-cost-us4-million-report/">money-wasting </a>as sanctions will, according to Western states who imposed them, only be removed if Zimbabwe upholds human rights which it is alleged to be currently violating.

"Anti-Sanctions Day Shall Be Declared An Official Public Holiday," - ZIM Govt

South Africa legislator for the ruling African National Congress party, Pemmy Castelina Pamela Majodina has called on the Pan African Parliament (PAP) to debate and adopt a resolution calling for the immediate lifting of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by the West.
Majodina argued that the sanctions had an adverse impact not only on Zimbabweans but also on the SADC region as a whole. She added:
<blockquote>The lifting of these sanctions will enable the government of Zimbabwe to attract foreign direct investment, which will serve as a catalyst for the economic recovery which is needed to meet the expectations of its citizens.
They (sanctions) are having a negative impact on women and children and also Africa’s agenda for 2063 goal and priority areas.</blockquote>
Majodina’s remarks come when SADC countries have set the 25th of October as the Anti-Sanctions day.
Meanwhile, Western states, including the USA and the UK who imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe insist that the alleged sanctions are not on Zimbabwe as a country but on individuals mainly in ZANU PF who were violating human rights.

"Sanctions Affect Zimbabweans and SADC At Large," SA Legislator

Prominent journalist and award-winning filmmaker, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Hopewell_Chin%27ono" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Hopewell Chin’ono</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/daddyhope/status/1184842942755885057" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">said</a> that Zimbabwe’s failure to get loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was not due to sanctions but the government’s refusal to pay debts.
An article published by The Guardian in 1999, three years before sanctions were imposed by Western governments, shows that the government of the then President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Robert_Mugabe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Robert Mugabe</a> announced that it was severing ties with the Bretton Woods institutions. Part of the article reads:
<blockquote>The IMF has repeatedly refused to sanction a £33 million balance of payments loan because of concerns about the true cost of Zimbabwe’s involvement in the Congo conflict, the Mugabe government’s plans for land redistribution and alleged shady deals in the energy sector.

Failure To Repay Loans, Not Sanctions, Blocked IMF Funds - Report

The opposition MDC said it will not interfere with ZANU PF’s planned anti-sanctions demo scheduled for 25 October 2019.
MDC deputy spokesperson, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Luke_Tamborinyoka" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Luke Tamborinyoka</a>, on Monday told the Daily News his party has no reason to infiltrate Zanu PF processes and functions. He said:
<blockquote>We have no reason to infiltrate Zanu PF processes and functions. The MDC is a non-violent party. We stand guided by Article 4.6 of the MDC constitution which states that we will prosecute our struggle in a peaceful and non-violent manner.

Tamborinyoka’s remarks follow Vice President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kembo_Mohadi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Kembo Mohadi’s</a> claims over the weekend that the ruling party had received intelligence suggesting that opposition parties and civil society organisations were planning to foment chaos during the demo.
The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Southern_African_Development_Community" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Southern African Development Community (SADC)</a> declared October 25 the day for solidarity with Zimbabwe in calling for the removal of targeted sanctions imposed by Western powers.

MDC Assures ZANU PF It Won't Interfere With Anti-sanctions March

The debate on sanctions on Zimbabwe has been there and is likely to continue for a long time. Whilst the government and the ruling ZANU PF have always called for the unconditional removal of sanctions “imposed on Zimbabwe” by Western powers, the United States and other countries which imposed those sanctions maintain that sanctions were imposed “on individuals within the government and on some entities”.
The question of whether they were imposed on Zimbabwe or Zimbabwe nationals and companies is for another day as this article intends to present opinions put forward in an article in today’s Herald. The article highlights a number of issues that were created by sanction. See below.
The article says that sanctions had a significant role in the deterioration of the economy.

<li>Credit facilities dwindled: access to international credit markets was blocked after the enactment of ZIDERA.</li>
<li>A decline in Balance of Payment (BOP) Support: BOP position has deteriorated significantly since the introduction of sanctions.</li>
<li>Reliance on Domestic Funding: as traditional sources of external finance, International Financial Institutions stopped giving support to Zimbabwe.</li>
<li>Failure to service Debt obligations: Shrinking sources of funding created the debt issue as the country defaulted on debt payment. Huge Arrears, in turn, forced creditors to suspended Balance of Payments support and technical assistance.</li>
<li>The decline in Standards of living: as a result of the sustained decline in long-term capital inflows.</li>
<li>Brain drain: Skilled workforce left the country in search of greener pastures.</li>
<li>Difficulties to make payments through the international payment platforms as these transactions are intercepted and blocked.</li>

How Are Sanctions Really Affecting Zimbabwe? - OPINION

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said that political and financial support from fellow African states made Zimbabwe survive sanctions from Western communities.
Mnangagwa was speaking on Wednesday in Uganda where he was delivering his congratulatory speech on that country’s independence day.
<blockquote>Zimbabwe is a country in transition, we are under sanctions for 20 years, however, because of solidarity and support, political and material from our sister countries like the Republic of Uganda, we still survive.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe has been under sanctions from the Western States including the United States of America, the United Kingdom and the European Union since the turn of the millennium for alleged human rights violations.
They were imposed immediately after Zimbabwe embarked on the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/08/23/full-thread-sanctions-about-us-interests-not-human-rights-trevor-ncube/">fast track land reform programme</a> which displaced many white farmers in the country.
The USA and allies, however, insist that <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/10/04/its-no-secret-weve-a-problematic-relationship-with-zimbabwe-us-envoy/">sanctions are not on Zimbabwe as a country but on individuals</a> mainly from the ruling ZANU PF party.
SADC countries in solidarity with Zimbabwe <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/08/19/sadc-proclaims-october-25-zimbabwe-anti-sanctions-day/">set aside 25 October as an Anti-Sanctions day.</a> They are calling for the unconditional removal of sanctions.

"20 Years Under Sanctions, But We Still Survive," ED

Job Sikhala, the vice-chairperson for the opposition MDC led by advocate Nelson Chamisa has said that USA and EU sanctions on Zimbabwe do not affect the general populace but a few individuals on the sanctions list.
His remarks are in sync with those of both the EU and the USA who have often said that sanctions were on a few individuals and a few entities.
These remarks come as the ruling ZANU PF and SADC countries have recently launched an anti-sanctions campaign which they even took to the United Nations General Assembly.

ED Invited To Attend Uganda's 57th Independence Day Celebrations As Special Guest

USA Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Brian Nichols has said that USA policy on sanctions and ZIDERA imposed on Zimbabwe will be adjusted depending on political and economic reforms in Zimbabwe.
Speaking after meeting with ZANU PF Secretary for Information and Publicity Simon Khaya Moyo at the party’s headquarters in Harare, Nichols said:

We exchanged views with the ruling party and want to understand what Zanu-PF’s perspective on events currently taking place in the country as well as to talk about the importance of continued reforms, political and economic, the fight against corruption and to have a frank conversation about USA and Zimbabwean policies.
Clearly, the Government of Zimbabwe has its concerns about the USA policy on sanctions and Zidera, the way they implement those reforms, that is the way to change in those policies Zimbabwe is concerned about.

His remarks come when Zimbabwe and SADC countries are collectively calling for the unconditional removal of “illegal” sanctions the USA imposed on Zimbabwe at the turn of the millennium over alleged human rights abuses.
Zimbabwe claims that the sanctions have robbed the country a chance to grow as they resulted in shrinking lines of credit, vital for economic growth.
The government also claims that the sanctions are causing harm to the general populace and not political elites as suggested by the USA government.

"Political & Economic Reforms Will Determine USA Policy On Sanctions," Amb Nichols

The AU chair, Egyptian president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, is expected to join other heads of state lobbying for sanctions against Zimbabwe to be removed The Sunday Mail reports. Tanzanian leader Dr John Magufuli is however expected to lead the Sanctions For Zimbabwe must fall charge. This was revealed by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Permanent Secretary, Ambassador James Manzou who said this to the Sunday Mail:
<blockquote>If you look at the decision that was made in Tanzania during the Heads of State and Government Summit, it was basically in two parts. The first one being Sadc declared that on October 25 all Sadc countries, in one form or another, will unite in protest against the sanctions.
Furthermore, it called on all Sadc Heads of State and Government to raise the issue in their statements at the United Nations General Assembly; that is, to call for the lifting of the sanctions. The Sadc chair was also mandated to lead the charge in calling for the removal of the sanctions.
So, what we are going to see at this year’s UNGA is a united position by all Sadc countries in calling for the removal of the sanctions on a global stage, something that is unprecedented.</blockquote>
The calls to be made by the AU chair, Egyptian leader, have previously been echoed by other heads of state. 25 October has been set aside as anti-sanctions day where activities to call for the removal of sanctions will be conducted in SADC countries.

Egyptian President Expected To Raise Sanctions For Zim Must Fall Calls During The General Debate At The UN Summit - Report

Luke Tamborinyoka, Deputy National Spokesperson of the opposition MDC led by advocate Nelson Chamisa has called upon the government to stop terrorising citizens.
He equated the ill-treatment of citizens by the government to sanctions which he said must surely go.
He said that the government was depriving citizens of their Constitutional rights including their right to demonstrate peacefully.
Tamborinyoka speaks when the president of the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association was reportedly abducted by alleged state agents for leading a demonstration over paltry salaries they are receiving.
He also gave reference to the disappearance of human rights defender, Jestina Mukoko to demonstrate how the government has been abusing citizens. Tamborinyoka said:
<blockquote>Jestina Mukoko is a renowned former broadcaster and now a human rights defender who runs the Zimbabwe Peace Project. In December 2008, she was abducted, tortured and held incommunicado for several weeks.</blockquote>
Tamborinyoka added that the government was also disenfranchising citizens by manipulating elections outcome in favour of the ruling ZANU PF.
He urged the government to first remove all the sufferings it has imposed on citizens before it calls for the removal of sanctions imposed on the country by Western states.

"Sanctions Must Go," MDC Spokesperson

During a post-cabinet Media briefing yesterday, Infomation, Publicity and Broadcasting Services minister said the total amount of revenue lost by Zimbabwe because of sanctions imposed by the west was in excess of US$98 Billion.  The Herald reports that the Minister said:
<blockquote>… Zimbabwe had lost at least US$42 billion in revenue over the past 18 years due to the sanctions
It is also believed that Zimbabwe lost bilateral donor support estimated at US$4,5 billion annually, since 2001.
A total of US$12 billion in loans from the IMF, the World Bank and African Development Bank as well as commercial loans worth US$18 billion were also lost on account of the sanctions
The sanctions also brought about an estimated GDP reduction to the tune of US$21 billion</blockquote>
This report is coming at a time when SADC has set aside 25 October as a day to protest against sanctions against Zimbabwe. Foreign Minister General SB Moyo was quoted by the same publication saying they are compiling a report about sanctions on Zimbabwe and they are going to publicize it within the region.
The US maintains sanctions are against 65 individuals and 56 companies and not against the ordinary Zimbabwean.

Sanctions Cost Us US$98 Billion - Government

War veterans aligned to the ruling ZANU PF party have recommended that the government designate the anti-sanctions day slated for October 25 a public holiday.
The modalities for the anti-sanctions day will be discussed at the Former Liberation Movements summit to be held in Victoria Falls in September.
This was revealed by Zanu-PF’s secretary for Welfare Services for War Veterans, War Collaborators, Ex-political prisoners, Detainees and Restrictees, Douglas Mahiya. He said:
<blockquote>It would be very good for the day to be declared a holiday. If the President says that day is a holiday it means that industry, farmers, doctors and everyone must be supportive of that day.
The day is very important, this is a day Zimbabweans should demonstrate how progressive they are because there is a whole region supporting Zimbabwe.</blockquote>
The SADC Heads of State and Government recently set aside the 25th of October as a solidarity day against the sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe.

Anti-sanctions Holiday On The Cards

The Zimbabwe Amalgamated Council of Churches (ZACC) yesterday handed over an anti-sanctions campaign letter to the British Embassy.
Speaking after handing over the letter, ZACC patron and leader Mr Jimayi Muduvuri said the sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by the European Union are hurting ordinary people. He said sanctions are meant to weaken Zimbabwe’s Government and control the country’s natural resources. Said Muduvuri:
<blockquote>These sanctions must be removed as they are in fact an unfinished colonial project of the West meant to weaken our Government and its control on our natural resources. Sanctions have also limited development and raised the risk profile of the country thereby scaring away investors which is tantamount to blackmail and stigmatisation. In any democratic set-up sanctions are imposed chiefly for those who would have violated laws, but in our case the question that begs answers is what laws have been broken?</blockquote>
The letter was received by British Embassy head of Political and Public Affairs John Culley on behalf of the British ambassador.
