Zimbabwean lawyer Thompson Chengeta has been appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres to his 15-member Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters (ABDM).
ABDM was established in 1978 and its functions include advising the Secretary-General on matters within the area of arms limitation and disarmament, including on studies and research under the auspices of the United Nations or institutions within the United Nations system.
Chengeta’s appointment was confirmed in a letter dated 07 December 2023, addressed to the Zimbabwean by Guterres. He wrote:

I have the honour to invite you to become a member of my Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters, as of January 2024.
Your experience and knowledge will enhance the work of the Board, both in its advisory capacity on disarmament issues and in its role as the Board of Trustees of the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR).
A description of the functions of the Advisory Board and its role as the Board of Trustees of UNIDIR is contained in the annex to this letter.
The next session of the Board will take place from 30 January to 2 February 2024 in Geneva. I do hope that you will be able to accept this invitation.

Posting on social media site X (formerly Twitter), Chengeta welcomed the appointment to the ABDM, describing it as an honour. <a href="https://x.com/DrThompsonLaw/status/1734517074024612135?s=20">He wrote</a>:

Chengeta studied law at Harvard Law School, the University of Pretoria (UP) and Midlands State University (MSU).
He is a Fellow at the South African Research Chair in International Law, University of Johannesburg (UJ), an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at MSU and a Non-Resident Fellow at the Institute of International and Comparative Law in Africa, UP.
Previously, Chengeta has worked on the mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur on extra-judicial killings and has experience with the OHCHR and the International Criminal Court.

Zimbabwean Lawyer Thompson Chengeta Appointed To UN Disarmament Advisory Board

The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has congratulated President Emmerson Mnangagwa following his re-election on 23 August 2023.
In a letter dated 08 September 2023, Guterres urged Mnangagwa to promote gender parity in Cabinet and senior appointments. He said:

I wish to congratulate you on your re-election as President of the Republic of Zimbabwe.
I look forward to the continued cooperation between Zimbabwe and the United Nations in the ongoing implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2022-2026 in order to accelerate development and ensure inclusive and sustainable economic growth, gender equality, human rights and climate action in Zimbabwe.

UN Secretary General Congratulates Mnangagwa On His Election Victory

The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres said he is closely following developments in Zimbabwe’s elections.
In a statement on Sunday, 27 August, Associate Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Florencia Soto Niño-Martínez, said Guterres was concerned about the arrest of observers, reports of voter intimidation, threats of violence, harassment and coercion. Reads the statement:

The Secretary-General is closely following developments in Zimbabwe’s elections. He is concerned about the arrest of observers, reports of voter intimidation, threats of violence, harassment and coercion.
The Secretary-General calls on political leaders and their supporters to reject any and all forms of violence, threats of violence, or incitement to violence, and to ensure that human rights and the rule of law are fully respected.
The Secretary-General calls on political actors to peacefully settle any disputes through established legal and institutional channels and urges the competent authorities to resolve any disputes in a fair, expeditious, and transparent manner to ensure that the results are a true reflection of the will of the people.

Zimbabwe conducted presidential, parliamentary, and local government elections on 23 and 24 August, with ZANU PF winning the majority of National Assembly seats and its presidential candidate Emmerson Mnangagwa declared the winner with 52.6% of the votes cast.
More than 30 local election observers were arrested in Harare last week for allegedly conducting parallel voter tabulation. They were all granted bail a few days later.

UN Secretary-General's Statement On Zimbabwe Elections

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has faced criticism for expressing concern over the dire living conditions that President Mohamed Bazoum and his family are allegedly enduring during their arbitrary detention in Niger.
Guterres also expressed alarm regarding the reported arrests of government members, calling for their unconditional release and the country’s adherence to international human rights obligations. A UN spokesperson said:

The Secretary-General is very concerned over the deplorable living conditions that President Bazoum and his family are reported to be living under as they continue to be arbitrarily detained by members of the Presidential Guard in Niger.
The Secretary-General is also alarmed over continuing reports about the arrest of several members of the government. He urgently calls for their unconditional release and for the strict adherence to Niger’s international human rights obligations.

Political activist and Pan-Africanist Ali Naka, who is purportedly associated with the Rwanda government, argued that President Bazoum’s living conditions should not be a cause for alarm, as they reflect the typical circumstances experienced by the common people of Niger. He said:

86% of the People of Niger don’t have access to electricity, meanwhile, the UN is concerned about whether one individual (Former President) has access to electricity. Pathetic. Our struggles are different!

Since his ousting in a military coup, Bazoum has been held captive at the presidential palace without access to basic necessities or medical care. The Nigerien Party for Democracy and Socialism-Tarayya condemned these conditions, appealing for international intervention to secure Bazoum’s freedom and restore constitutional order. The junta, however, has resisted external pressure to relinquish power. 
Living conditions in Niger are challenging due to factors such as poverty, limited access to basic services, food insecurity, and inadequate healthcare. Clean water, electricity, and sanitation facilities are scarce, especially in rural areas. The majority of the population relies on subsistence agriculture, facing recurring droughts and desertification. These factors contribute to high poverty rates and low human development indicators. Several factors such as poverty, food insecurity, limited access to basic services, inadequate healthcare, environmental challenges like drought and desertification, and political instability contribute to these challenging living conditions.

UN Criticized For Concern Over President Bazoum's Alleged Living Conditions During Coup

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said his re-engagement efforts are now bearing fruit after he was welcomed to the COP26 Summit by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Mnangagwa’s visit to Glasgow was the first visit to the UK by a Zimbabwe head of state in 25 years after Britain, other Western countries and the US imposed sanctions on the country over alleged human rights abuses and failure to make political and economic reforms.
In a tweet on Monday afternoon, Mnangagwa expressed gratitude to Johnson and Guterres for the gesture. <a href="https://twitter.com/edmnangagwa/status/1455144026324316162">He wrote:</a>

The estimate suggests Mnangagwa is spending close to USS$1 million on travel alone.

'Reengagement Is Working', Meeting Boris Johnson Excites Mnangagwa

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has put 120 million tourism jobs at risk according to the UN Chief Mr Antonio Guterres, the Chronicle reports.
According to Guterres, the global tourism industry which is the world’s largest industry after fuel and chemicals has lost $320billion since 5 months ago when the pandemic spread to other countries.
Said the UN chief in an update last week:
<blockquote>(The tourism industry) It employs one in every 10 people on Earth and provides livelihoods to hundreds of millions more. In addition to boosting economies, it allows people to experience some of the world’s cultural and natural riches and brings people closer to each other, highlighting our common humanity.</blockquote>
In a policy paper published by the organisation, the UN said the pandemic was also some industries that complement the tourism industry:
<blockquote>This has been a major shock for richer developed nations but for developing countries, it is an emergency, particularly for many small island developing states and African countries.
In addition to tourism jobs that are at risk, jobs in associated sectors, including food service, that provide employment for 144 million workers worldwide are also at risk. It stressed that small businesses are particularly vulnerable.</blockquote>
The organisation said recovery will be dependent on the evolution of economies out of the pandemic:

120 Million Tourism Jobs At Risk Due To The COVID-19 Pandemic - UN

A group of Civil Society Organisations in Matabeleland under the Civil Society Organisations in Matabeleland banner have written to President Mnangagwa and several other international and local organisations including SADC and AU in protest to Monica Mtsvangwa’s tribalistic statement when she labelled Ndebeles the self-righteous minority a few days ago, New Zimbabwe.
The groups plead with President Mnangagwa’s government to stop insulting the Ndebele people and urged the president to resolve the myriad of woes troubling the country right now.
In the lengthy letter in which the AU Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat, Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi the current SADC chair,  Antonio Guterres United Nations Secretary-General, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is also the Chairperson of the African Union were copied, the groups wrote:
<blockquote>We write to you as a cross-section of civil society in Matabeleland to express our grave concern on the deteriorating human rights situation in Zimbabwe, especially with regards to the surge in torture and abductions in general and threats directed against the Ndebele ethnic group in particular and to request that your office takes immediate and robust measures to avert a humanitarian disaster and a potential repeat of genocide as well as total collapse of the rule of law and constitutional safeguards
We have a government that practices outright and brazen tribalism. Lately, we are witnessing a well-orchestrated systemic marginalisation and discrimination of Ndebele people, general suppression and disregard of the political, civil, economic, social and cultural rights of ethnic and linguistic minorities, and an increase in a callous and targeted campaign of torture and violence against citizens in general in a way that demonstrates utter disregard of international law
The situation therefore needs your immediate attention and indeed your intervention. As civil society organisations, in our daily operations, we work on a range of issues and touch the lives of people in every way, including, but not limited to, gender and women’s empowerment, children’s rights, humanitarian aid, psychosocial support for victims of violence and torture, peace building, and advocacy on civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights. We are thus alive to the sentiments on the ground.
Besides, our work places us as frontline workers in the struggles against poverty, hunger, and conflict and human rights abuses. Being on the ground makes us as civil society actors best placed to comment on the prevailing situation. Also, we are the first responders in human rights and humanitarian work,
The statement was not just hate speech or incitement of discrimination and hatred but borders on incitement to commit crimes against Ndebele people as a group. It is a fact that Archbishop Ndlovu had not signed the statement alone, but with six other non-Ndebele Catholic bishops. Neither did he sign as a Ndebele, nor on behalf of the Ndebele people but as a Bishop of the Catholic Church, for the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops’ Conference.
However, the government statement attacked him personally based on his ethnicity and the Ndebele people in the vilest language. Archbishop Ndlovu was singled out for his membership in the Ndebele people as a group and was attacked as such,
The result is that the Matabeleland region today has the least access to education and has the highest school dropout and failure rates. The people of Matabeleland are systematically marginalised from economic resources, a situation that has relegated the Matabeleland region, where Ndebele people are largely found, being the centre of poverty, hunger, unemployment and diseases in Zimbabwe.</blockquote>
The government offered a follow-up statement to Mutsvangwa’s statement in question and labelled the pastoral letter from the Catholics Bishops divisive and offensive and never apologised for the rude remarks made by the information minister.

Matabeleland Groups Protest Mtsvangwa's "Self Righteous Minority" Insult

The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is in the process of reviewing the United States’ withdrawal from the World Health Organisation (WHO) to establish whether the country met the conditions of withdrawal or not.
This comes after U.S. President <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/07/08/trump-pulls-usa-out-of-the-world-health-organisation/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Donald Trump on 6 July formally notified WHO</a> that the USA will withdraw from the United Nations agency which it joined 72 years ago over the agency’s alleged ties to China.

Some believe the U.S.’s withdrawal from the Worl Health Organisation will hamper the international fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and sap the U.S. of global influence since the U.S. is the largest funder to WHO.
Although recent reports vary as to the extent of assessed U.S. contributions owed, the range is in the low hundreds of millions of dollars.

United Nations Verifying USA's Withdrawal From WHO

The United Nations has responded to the US President Donald Trump after he announced that America will cut its half a billion funding to the WHO because it is mishandling and covering up the COVID-19 pandemic, Aljazeera reports.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a statement said:
<blockquote>Now is the time for unity and for the international community to work together in solidarity to stop this virus and its shattering consequences</blockquote>
His sentiments were shared by Dr Nahid Bhadelia who is an infectious diseases specialist and the medical director of the Special Pathogens Unit at Boston University who said this on social media:
<blockquote>Cutting 15 percent (US contribution) of WHO budget during the biggest projected pandemic of the last century is an absolute disaster. WHO is a global technical partner, the platform through which sovereign countries share data/technology, our eyes on the global scope of this pandemic</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Trump is also under fire for covering up the pandemic in his country as the US became the world’s newest epicentre with over half a million cases and over 23 000 deaths.

Antonio Guterres, the ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations has said that the uprisings experienced globally were a sign of dwindling trust between the general populace and political institutions. A number of countries have recorded scores of demonstrations lately as citizens expressed to their governments’ ways of conducting business or over the deteriorating state of affairs. He said:
