More than 40 undocumented burials were conducted by apostolic communities in Hurungwe, with the graves turned into sweet potato and tomato beds, a report claims.
A report presented by the Mashonaland West medical director, Dr Celestino Dhege, during the Government’s provincial heads meeting held in Chinhoyi recently, shows that over 40 secret burials were conducted in Hurungwe District.
This has been happening in Maronda/Mangate, Shumba, Village 5, Chakaraya and Dzokamushure Villages.
The report says villagers have been seeing vegetable gardens and beds sprouting each morning unaware that underneath the fertile soils lies a dead child denied medical attention. Said Dhege (via <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/sect-conceals-40-graves-under-sweet-potato-beds/">The Herald</a>):

We are told that over 40 secret burials were conducted in the Hurungwe area, where parents would then plant sweet potatoes and tomatoes on top to conceal evidence of their bad acts. Investigations are ongoing and we will get to the bottom of this.
As a province, we are working towards giving the communities knowledge regarding the dangers of various diseases that the nation faces.
My office was briefed by health officials that in the Hurungwe area, where these deaths and secret burials occurred, there was an outbreak of diarrhoeal diseases, mumps and measles.

Dr Dhege added that a household in Ward 22 had lost children aged 12, nine, seven, three, one and half years within a short space of time.
He called on lawmakers to enact laws that protect children from parents who shun modern medicine amid revelations that many were succumbing to measles, cholera and other diarrhoeal diseases.
Wards 4 and 22 of Hurungwe Rural District Council were the most affected by cases of mumps and measles.
Dr Dhege said it was high time punitive measures were put to deter would-be offenders to protect the children. He said:

On a sad note, apostolic (Marange) communities hide these incidents.
Where we have outbreaks like cholera and measles, some apostolic members bury their children at night after denying them access to medical care.
To conceal the horrendous act, they plant sweet potatoes on top of the graves.
To them, the death of a child is not as significant as we think. They believe children are like bricks, more will be moulded.

A 23-year-old mother, Tariro Gambe, was recently divorced by her husband, disowned by her parents and de-churched by the sect after she sought medical attention following the death of her nine-year-old child in March this year.

Apostolic Sect Conceals 40 Graves Under Sweet Potato Beds

More than 40 per cent of Christians in Mashonaland West Province are members of apostolic sects, a development that some social commentators have attributed to rising poverty and disease caused by grand corruption and maladministration in the public sector under President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration.
Apostolic sects or white garment churches are known for their claims to deep spirituality and ability to miraculously change the fortunes of their adherents for the better and cure all manner of illnesses.
According to the latest Zimbabwe Statistical Agency (ZimStat) data, Christianity is the main religion constituting 79.9% of Mashonaland West Province’s population.
ZimStat demographic analysis manager, Perfect Makumbe, said of the Christian majority, 41.9% belonged to different apostolic sects.
Makumbe was presenting the 2022 Population and Housing Census provincial profiles, district data sheets and gross domestic product (GDP) during a dissemination workshop held in Chinhoyi on Tuesday. Said Makumbe (<a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/zim-poverty-drives-40-of-mash-west-christians-into-apostolic-sects-seeking-miracles/">via NewZimbabwe.com</a>):

According to the census results, Christians constituted 79.9% of the population of Mashonaland West while a significant 12.1% did not identify with any religion.
Now looking at the Christians, and here we are saying those that identified as Roman Catholics, protestants and Pentecostals, 41.9% belonged to apostolic sects.

Makumbe, however, did not elaborate on why nearly half of the Christians in Mash West have joined white garment churches.
Givemore Njovani, a social commentator, told NewZimbabwe.com that poverty and joblessness are driving people to join the white garment churches as they had become hopeless in the face of seemingly unending economic hardships. Said Njovani:

The only logical conclusion as to why we have had a massive shift of churchgoers, particularly Christians, going to apostolic sects is that the masses have become hopeless and are seeking miracles because the leaders have failed dismally to provide better livelihoods.
Apostolic sects give holy water and anointed stones which are believed to bring good tidings and miracles.

During the data presentation workshop, ZimStat also claimed that Mash West’s unemployment rate stood at a curious 14.1 %, contrary to the suggestion that about 90% of Zimbabweans are unemployed. Said ZimStat:

When we dealt with the unemployment rate, we used the international labour law’s definition of unemployment and not street definitions.
The provincial unemployment rate was at 14.2 % and not those numbers we hear elsewhere.

White garment churches, also known as Vapositori, are a group of African Independent Churches (AICs) characterised by their white garments and their practice of faith healing and prophecy.
The Vapositori churches have been involved in party politics, particularly in favour of ZANU PF, and have played a significant role in ZANU PF’s continued rule since independence in 1980 to the present.

40% Of Christians In Mashonaland West Are Members Of Apostolic Sects - ZIMSTAT

Police have called on the government to outlaw “vuzu” parties saying they promote drug and sex abuse among the youth.
On Saturday, apostolic churches partnered with police in an anti-drug campaign at Gwanzura Stadium in Highfield.
Various apostolic faith churches from Chitungwiza, led by Madzibaba Owen Chingondi, and Highfield-based Madzibaba Moses Gwanzura attended the function where several musicians performed.
Detective Sergeant Netty Kundizeza said some young people are made to abuse drugs at Vuzu parties in some cases unknowingly. Said Kundizeza:

Our nation is losing talented people due to the abuse of drugs. Vuzu parties must be outlawed as they encourage drug and sex abuse among the youth.
Some youths are being abused at Vuzu parties where they are lured into eating cakes and drinks mixed with dangerous drugs.
Mutoriro, tumbwa nedombo zvaparadza vana vedu tovaviga toshaya anotishandira nekushandira nyika yedu.
Parents, let us join hands in monitoring and teaching our children to desist from abusing these drugs and substances.

Speaking at the event, Madzibaba Moses said that they decided to partner with the police to fight drug abuse. He said:

Our marriage with the police is to fight crime. We organised this musical show to address people about the dangers of drug and substance abuse.
</blockquote>
Not all people come for prayers, but all people are affected by the few who engage in criminal activities.
Our musicians are here to strike the right chords for our message to sink into their minds that our nation can only be built by us.

The Bulawayo City Council planning a clampdown on open-air churches across the city in response to complaints by residents of noise pollution.
Speaking at a full council meeting last week, Bulawayo deputy mayor Mlandu Ncube said:

The city is now dominated by flags of different churches. They are spreading cholera because they are using the bush as ablution facilities. I am saying let’s remove these churches from the city.
</blockquote>
Ward 4 Councillor Silas Chigora said the problem should be dealt with once and for all. Chigora said:
<blockquote>
We are shocked whether it’s worshipping or money-spinning activities, let’s write to these churches to say they should vacate those sites.
Let us (also) engage someone like a debt collector who will go around removing these people because I am tired of the complaints of these churches.
My community respects the environment, they respect trees, they respect rocks, they respect hills and mountains.
Let’s engage someone to round up these churches just like we did in George Silundika, let’s do that and deal with this problem once and for all.

Ward 27 councillor Alderman Siboniso Khumalo said the churches should apply for stands to construct places of worship.

Bulawayo Council Plans Crackdown On Open Air Churches

The Grade 7 pupil from Katanga, Norton, a small town in Mashonaland West Province, who died while giving birth in Bikita on 04 October, was buried in Mt Darwin on Thursday.
Nokutenda Hwaramba’s body was ferried from Bikita to Mt Darwin on Wednesday and laid to rest on the following day.
Her father, Bernard Hwaramba, told <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/norton-teen-laid-to-rest/">H-Metro</a> that they will release the details related to the circumstances which led to his 15-year-old daughter’s death in due course. He said:
<blockquote>
We have laid Nokutenda to rest. We saw it best to lay her to rest early since we spent the night travelling.
Details surrounding her death will be released later since we are still mourning her.
Nokutenda died on Tuesday at an apostolic church shrine while giving birth.
</blockquote>
She had been taken to the shrine by her father for prayers as their church doctrine does not allow them to seek medical help at hospitals.
Some Katanga residents had threatened to beat up Bernard, and his church members, accusing them of causing the death of Nokutenda.
Speaking to H-Metro on Wednesday, Nokutenda’s mother, Loice Muparadziwo, said her daughter was impregnated by one of their neighbours, one Aaron. She said:

Nokutenda was said to have been impregnated by one Aaron from our neighbourhood.
She got sick and would just fall down as if possessed by evil spirits.
Her father consulted prophets from his congregation and later took her to Bikita for more prayers.
He left Nokutenda in the hands of the intercessors and she died while giving birth at the shrine.
The church doctrine did not allow us to take Nokutenda to a clinic, or hospital, to give birth or for any medical treatment.
I failed to accompany them to Bikita because I was also due to deliver and I had a miscarriage at Norton General Hospital on the day Nokutenda passed away.

Nokutenda’s death echoes the death of 14-year-old Anna Machaya who died while giving birth in Marange in July 2021 and that of 15-year-old Ferby Munyafi of Chiadzwa Village in Marange who died in January 2022 from excessive bleeding while delivering.
Hatirarami Momberume alias Evans Michael Momberume, a devotee of the Johane Marange apostolic sect has been charged with Anna’s murder.
Anna’s parents, Edmore Machaya (45) and Shy Mabika (36) were jailed for nine months each – wholly suspended – for lying to detectives about her age.
Ferby died on 12 January 2022 and police charged her “husband” 29-year-old Arthur Chitombo with having sexual relations with a minor.

Girl (15) Who Died While Giving Birth At Church Shrine Buried

A 15-year-old girl from Norton died at an apostolic sect shrine on Tuesday 04 October 2022 in Bikita giving birth, her family said.
Nokutenda Hwaramba died together with her baby, at a shrine, where she was being cared for by unidentified prophets H-Metro reported.
Nokutenda’s mother Loice Muparadziwo said she could not be with her daughter in her final moments as she herself was hospitalised in Norton where she suffered a miscarriage. Muparadziwo told <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/shock-and-outrage-grade-7-pupil-dies-while-giving-birth-tragedy-leaves-norton-residents-shell-shocked/">H-Metro</a>:
<blockquote>

There is also a 15-year-old Ferby Munyafi of Chiadzwa Village in Marange who died in January 2022 from excessive bleeding while delivering under the watch of a faith healer.

Grade 7 Learner From Norton Dies While Giving Birth At Church Shrine

Seven children from an Honde Valley family recently succumbed to measles within a space of two weeks.
The seven children were aged between three and 11.
The Rode family’s remaining eight children were only spared after their parents took the bold decision to quit their white garment church and seek medical services for them, according to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/7-children-from-one-family-die-of-measles/">The Herald.</a>
Religious beliefs that discourage seeking medical services have been identified as the major cause of the current measles outbreak and the resulting deaths.
Mr Tendai Rode of Nyamaende in Honde Valley told Zimpapers’ Television Network (ZTN) that it was painful to bury his children one after the other within such a short space of time. He said in an interview:
<blockquote>
I am married to three wives and I was blessed with 15 children. All my children got infected with measles. This happened within a week and on day eight, some of the children who had developed a skin rash started coughing.
The following day, the first child, aged three, died in the morning. The other one, aged four, died in the afternoon. We buried them the following morning.
The other child, aged five, succumbed to the same disease two days later. Barely a day later, the other girl who was doing Grade Two also died.
The other child died the next day. We were all traumatised because five children had succumbed to the disease within a week.
Watching my children dying one after the other made me think twice about my religious beliefs. I saw it prudent to quit my church and seek medical attention for my children at the local health institution.
However, my 11-year-old boy who was being attended to at the clinic failed to make it. He died that very evening. The other one died three days later.
So five of my children died before we could seek medical attention for them, while the other two died after our visit to the clinic. All the children were not vaccinated as this was against our religious beliefs.
However, the measles tests done on my children were not conclusive. The skin rash had disappeared, but their coughing persisted. This disease cost me dearly and I have nowhere to start. All our resources were drained during the seven funerals.

Statistics from the Ministry of Health and Child Care say as of last week, Manicaland had recorded 3 010 cases and 347 deaths, mostly in Mutasa District. Of those cases, 507 were vaccinated, while 1 982 were unvaccinated. The status of 527 people was unknown.
In response to the measles outbreak, the Government has deployed mobile teams to vaccinate children between the ages of six months and 15 years.
Measles is caused by a highly contagious virus that spreads from person to person via airborne transmission, including breathing, coughing and sneezing.
Among other symptoms, infected persons develop a skin rash, high fever, cough, runny nose, irritated red and watery eyes.

Family Loses 7 Children To Measles In Two Weeks

Mothers who are members of Apostolic sects, who are referred to as madzimai, have resorted to sneaking to clinics behind their husbands’ backs to vaccinate their babies against measles.
Some Apostolic sects consider vaccination taboo and forbid members from getting medical care insisting that all their health problems are solved through prayers.
Adherents put their faith in prayer, holy water and other measures to ward off disease or cure illnesses.
Zimbabwe has been grappling with a deadly measles outbreak since April 2022 which has killed more than 700 children across the country.
Many were unvaccinated because of religious reasons, Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said.
At Mbare Polyclinic in Harare, some women were taken to the back room to get their children vaccinated in secret, and in defiance of religious doctrine that forbids them from using modern medicines.
Lewis Foya, a nurse at the clinic told The Associated Press that the advent of the measles outbreak saw children dying so they are now coming secretly to get help. He added:
<blockquote>
They have a belief that if they get vaccinated, they become unholy so that’s the doctrine that they pass down to the women.
</blockquote>
Foya said the patriarchy in the church means women have “no power to openly say no” to instructions.
As a result, to save their children, some mothers visit clinics in secret, sometimes under the cover of the night and without their husbands knowing.
At the Mbare clinic, one mother who identified herself as Winnet Musiyarira said people had learned from the vaccine hesitancy prevalent during the COVID-19 pandemic. She said:

A lot of people were misinformed during that COVID-19 period because they were told that when you get vaccinated there will be after-effects.
So due to that a lot of people lost their lives and it was important for everybody to take that seriously.
So when I heard about measles I just said I have to take my kids to the hospital and get them vaccinated.

Musiyarira said she wasn´t a member of a religious group but some were women wearing matching white headscarves to indicate they are part of an Apostolic church and were at the Mbare clinic to get their children vaccinated secretly.

"Madzimai" Vaccinate Children Secretly In Defiance Of Church Doctrine

ZANU PF legislator for Muzarabani South Tapera Saizi has taken the ongoing Covid-19 vaccination to the apostolic sects in his constituency.
Saizi said he realised that the apostolic sects were reluctant to participate in vaccination programs due to their religious beliefs hence the initiative to take the program to the people.
He engaged various health stakeholders and is still visiting the apostolic sects the mobile vaccination team and getting the apostolic sects vaccinated after full advice. Saizi said:
<blockquote>
Having noticed that the apostolic sects were reluctant to take the vaccination program we teamed up with various health organizations and encouraged them to be vaccinated, we are delighted to note that we trained vaccination champions and amongst the champions, we have members from the apostolic sects.
In Chiweshe, Chigwida area we were invited by people from Johanne Marange sect on Friday to vaccinate them and we went with the team and vaccinated the sect from there we went to Chaona and did the same exercise.

The initiative comes after President Emmerson Mnangagwa had called upon legislators to champion the vaccination campaign. 
Saizi hailed president Mnangagwa for sourcing donations to fight the pandemic and urging the MPs to work with health workers to fight Covid-19.
Chiweshe-based apostolic leader Cephas Mazarura showed gratitude to the vaccination team and praised Saizi for donating buckets and hand sanitisers. He said:

We have taken heed of the deadly disease through honourable Saizi’s vaccination team, we are fully behind President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s call of vaccination program hence as vapositori we are partaking in the program.
</blockquote>
Some apostolic sects do not allow their members to visit hospitals for medical treatment saying prayers will heal them of any sickness. 
Many people are reported to have died at the church shrines during childbirth or from other ailments.

ZANU PF MP Takes COVID-19 Vaccines To Apostolic Sects

Shamwari yeMwanasikana, a Non- Governmental Organisation that advocates for the emancipation and empowerment of the girl child in Zimbabwe has expressed outrage following the death of a 14-year-old girl at a Mapositori (Apostolic Sect) shrine.
In a statement, Shamwari yeMwanasikana indicated the 14-year-old girl died during labour in the hands of a madzibaba (a male member of an Apostolic sect) infringing section 76 of the constitution which advocates for the right to health access. It said:

It is infuriating that the young girl met her untimely death in the hands of a religious leader, a death that could have been avoided had she gotten medical treatment in time.
In practising her religious beliefs, she was denied her constitutional right to accessing health services.
The perpetrators in these barbaric acts have been going unpunishment for a very long time. The law enforcement agents have been failing in their duty to serve and protect.
</blockquote>
Shamwari yeMwanasikana demanded the arrest of those culpable for the death of the teenager, the man responsible for the pregnancy, as well as the deceased’s guardians who did not report the case of abuse to the police. The statement further read:

Our law criminalizes sexual intercourse with a young person who is below the age of consent, of 16 years. Churches are supposed to be safe havens for children however, we have madzibaba who violated her right to health care which resulted in her death, thus, should be held accountable.
Communities should take a standpoint in ensuring that our communities are safe and we are not complacent in responding to issues of child abuse.
Therefore, we demand justice for the deceased who untimely died in the hands of a trusted man of the cloth. It is time that the government together with the civil society works together in putting an end to these inhumane crimes against the girl child being orchestrated by the men of the cloth.

Death Of Pregnant Teen At Apostolic Shrine Outrages Shamwari yeMwanasikana

MDC Alliance spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere has dismissed as false <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/mdc-a-trio-turns-to-prophets/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">a report by The Herald</a> claiming that three political activists – Joana Mamombe, Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova – recently visited an apostolic sect prophetess, Madzimai Memory of Hatfield, Harare, to have the State’s case against them fall.
The report claims that the MDC trio visited the shrine located behind the Catholic University of Zimbabwe between Joshua Nkomo Road and St Martins suburb on September 1 in a bid to have allegations of having faked abductions dismissed by the courts.
Responding to Happi Zengeni who had <a href="https://twitter.com/happ_zenge/status/1304266998705201153" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">commented</a> on the story by The Herald, asking why the apostolic members allegedly violated “client confidentiality” by divulging the purpose of the MDC trio’s visit to the shrine, Mahere <a href="https://twitter.com/advocatemahere/status/1304295313230962688" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">said</a>:
<blockquote>This is fake news. The State has launched a smear campaign against the MDCT trio. The video is fake and so is this mapostori story.
It’s all calculated to convict them in the eyes of the public ahead of their trial. The perpetrators of their abduction are yet to be brought to book.</blockquote>
According to the report, the three arrived at the shrine in an unregistered Toyota Fortuner, that was being driven by Mamombe, the Member of Parliament for Harare West.
An unnamed congregant who was within earshot of the trio’s conversation with the prophet is quoted as having said:
<blockquote>The prophet said that the women were vigilant, especially Mamombe whom he singled out as courageous.
He also told the three activists that they lusted for material things and he described them as promiscuous, attributes that he said were bringing them misfortune.</blockquote>
The prophet reportedly assured the MDC trio that their misfortunes would disappear if they committed to attending regular intercessions at the shrine.

First Lady Grace Mugabe donated 1000 tonnes ( one million kilograms) of rice to the Apostolic Sects on Sunday. The first lady revealed this at the Church Interface Rally held at Rufaro Stadium saying that it was her Christmas Present for the thousands of apostolic sect members across the country. Grace Mugabe in her speech said that the apostolic sects were a very important constituency for Zanu-PF as they did a lot for the party.
Most of the leaders of the apostolic sects declared their open support for President Robert Mugabe, Grace Mugabe and Zanu-PF. The churches have endorsed President Mugabe for next year’s harmonised elections.  Some of the more passionate leaders repeatedly denounced the opposition MDC-T party when making their remarks.

Grace Mugabe Donates 1 Million Kgs of Rice To  Apostolic Sects for Christmas

First Lady Grace Mugabe had organised a rally with various apostolic sects possibly early next month at Zimbabwe Grounds in Highfield, Harare ahead of Zanu-PF’s special congress.
The rally is being organised by former Zanu PF central committee member and patron of the newly-formed Zimbabwe Amalgamated Churches Council, Jimayi Muduvuri. Although NewsDay could not get a comment from Muduvuri, his sect’s national co-ordinator Emmanuel Muzhangiri confirmed the development. Said Muzhangiri:
<blockquote>The date has not yet been confirmed, but we are meeting the First Family at Zimbabwe Grounds possibly early November. We are a big organisation and we hope to bring about 200 000 members to meet the First Family. We basically want to thank the President for the peace in the country, his support for agriculture through the Presidential Inputs Scheme and for allowing us the freedom of worship we are enjoying in the country. We will also take the opportunity to express our concerns that include requesting the President that all church members also benefit from the Presidential Inputs Scheme that, together with last year’s good rains, has made the country food-secure.</blockquote>

Video: Apostolic sect members instructed that "Holy Spirit" told them to vote Zanu-PF

Madzibaba Steven Mukozhiwa (39) of Bulawayo was fined for assaulting a fellow congregant who had defied his “prophecy.” Mukozhiwa had made a “prophecy” which stated that all congregants had to shave their heads with the same razor blade. When Seppyoggi Rutendo Mthethwa (22) refused to adhere to these instrutions, Mukozhiwa assaulted him using his shepherd’s crook.
West Commonage magistrate Mr Steven Ndlovu convicted Mukozhiwa of assault and fined him $300 or 90 days in prison. Ruled Ndlovu:
<blockquote>Failure to pay the fine will attract an effective 90 days in prison. A further 6 months in jail will be wholly suspended on condition of good behaviour</blockquote>
