Microsoft co-founder and billionaire philanthropist, Bill Gates, predicts that within the next decade, Artificial Intelligence (AI) will make humans unnecessary for most tasks, as it will provide free and accessible expertise, like medical advice and tutoring, which are currently rare and human-dependent.
Gates refers to this as the arrival of a new era of “free intelligence,” where AI-powered technologies will impact many aspects of life, including medicine, education, and virtual assistance.
Gates told comedian Jimmy Fallon during an interview on NBC’s “The Tonight Show” in February that the rapid pace of AI development is both profound and a bit scary due to its lack of upper limits.
There is an ongoing debate about AI’s effect on jobs. Some experts believe AI will improve human efficiency and create new jobs, while others, like Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman, argue that AI will be labor-replacing, leading to massive workforce disruption.
Gates is optimistic about AI’s potential to offer breakthrough treatments for diseases, tackle climate change, and provide high-quality education to all.
He said some human jobs, like playing baseball, will likely remain untouched by AI. However, tasks like manufacturing, transportation, and agriculture could be largely automated over time.
Gates acknowledged valid concerns about AI, such as errors in top AI programmes and the spread of misinformation.
Speaking to CNBC Make It in September 2024, Gates said that if he had to start a new business from scratch, he’d launch an “AI-centric” startup. He said:

Today, somebody could raise billions of dollars for a new AI company [that’s just] a few sketch ideas. I’m encouraging young people at Microsoft, OpenAI, wherever I find them: ‘Hey, here’s the frontier.’ Because you’re taking a fresher look at this than I am, and that’s your fantastic opportunity.”

Bill Gates Says AI Will Replace Many Doctors And Teachers Within 10 Years

The Zimbabwean government plans to send teachers for training in Artificial Intelligence, robotics, and coding in Russia next month.
Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Torerayi Moyo announced this initiative during the commissioning of Mbizvo Christian Primary School in Kwekwe last Wednesday.
Moyo said that training will commence in October, with the first group of 25 teachers participating in online courses from a Russian university. Five teachers will travel to Russia for a fully funded week-long program focused on robotics and coding.
This training initiative aims to equip teachers with the skills to embrace technological advancements, enabling them to effectively impart knowledge to their students in schools. Said Moyo (via <a href="https://masvingomirror.com/russia-to-train-zim-teachers-on-ai/">The Mirror</a>):

We now have AI, robotics, coding and many other things so from next month teachers will be having training in computers and current technologies and learn how children can come up with innovations through technology.
After we visited Russia, the Russians then brought us laptops four weeks ago and distribution has already started so from October we will be conducting online learning with professors in Russia who will train our teachers. The course is fully funded and government will give them allowances for the trip.

Zimbabwean Teachers To Train In AI And Robotics In Russia

Prof. Dr. Thompson Chengeta, an Associate Professor in Law and AI Technologies at Liverpool John Moores University, and a Zimbabwean national, has been appointed a Commissioner for the Global Commission on Responsible Artificial Intelligence in the Military Domain (GC REAIM).
The GC REAIM is an initiative launched by the Government of the Netherlands during the 2023 REAIM Summit on Responsible Artificial Intelligence in the Military Domain held in The Hague.
It aims to address the challenges and opportunities posed by artificial intelligence (AI) in the military-strategic realm.
Chengeta expressed gratitude for his appointment to the GC REAIM, saying he was looking forward to working with other 14 Commissioners and 40 renowned experts and thought leaders from across the globe on the initiative. He said:

I am honoured to join GC REAIM, as its aim to provide a much-needed platform for multi-stakeholder dialogue on military Al matches my interest in inclusive dialogue on this matter. While Al in the military domain offers opportunities for others, it raises disproportionate risks for people who, historically and at present, are often disproportionately impacted by war. I look forward to exchanging views with all stakeholders.
