<p>Two illegal gold miners died just after midnight on Saturday at Vubachikwe Mine in Gwanda when the shaft they were working in collapsed.</p>
<p>The mine has been closed for a year after a strike by mine workers over salaries.</p>
<p>Police have identified the deceased as Nqobile Phiri from Esigodini and Thamsanqa Moyo from Gwanda.</p>
<p>Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Matabeleland South Province, Inspector Loveness Mangena confirmed the incident to <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/two-die-in-mine-collapse/"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>The Sunday News</strong></span></a>. She said:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>Other two panners were doing illegal panning, Bhekimpilo Ndebele (32) and Alex Mvendele (40) who heard the sound of people screaming for help inside a shaft.</p>
<p>One of them was also trapped but survived and was referred to Gwanda Provincial Hospital for treatment.</p>
<p>The bodies of the two miners were retrieved at 7 AM from the mine shaft and they are at Gwanda Provincial Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-modern.</p>

<p>An illegal gold miner who identified himself as Ntandoyenkosi Nyathi said he was also working in the shaft with the deceased when a big rock fell and the shaft collapsed. He said:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>I saw a big rock falling from above and it hit the two guys who were carrying the ore. A lot of people who were in the shaft ran away. One of the deceased told me that he was dying and I should help him.</p>
<p>I then told him that the stone was too heavy and I could not lift it by myself. I went to look for help and when I came back he was already dead.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Insp Mangena urged members of the public to desist from illegal gold mining saying they risk their lives.</p>
<p>Gold panning has become a common practice in Zimbabwe due to prevailing economic hardships, with children as young as 10 years old taking part in the illegal activities.</p>
<p>Gold panning provides a lifeline for some during difficult times, but the practice can have detrimental effects on the environment, including soil erosion and water pollution.</p>

Two Gold Panners Crushed To Death By Huge Boulder At Vubachikwe Mine

<p>Hundreds of teenagers in Gwanda District have dropped out of school and are now involved in gold panning activities.</p>
<p>According to a 2018 Zimbabwe Vulnerability Assessment Committee (ZimVAC) report, Gwanda District had the highest number of school dropouts in Matabeleland South province standing at 1 130, of which 455 were from primary schools and 675 from secondary. The report reads in part:</p>
<blockquote><p>The district has been hit by severe food shortages. A lot of mining activities are taking place in Gwanda and that contributed to children leaving school to look for money in the mines.</p></blockquote>
<p>Sibonakele Nyoni 21, a single mother of one has blamed the high school drop out rate to the malfunctioning Zimbabwean economy. She said:</p>
<blockquote><p>I think the situation could have been different if the economy was well because we could be having fewer people thriving on illegal panning.</p>
<p>They could be doing better professional jobs, but since there are no jobs, people are forced to join gold panning or emigrate to South Africa in search of work.</p>
<p>In other words, we are living in a community where children don’t get inspired by education but by illegal gold panning and border jumping because there is quick money.</p></blockquote>
<p>Meanwhile, Gwanda Residents Association (GRA) chairman Bekezela Maduma Fuzwayo said the teens are quitting school to go into artisanal mining for various reasons. He said:</p>
<blockquote><p>In most cases, it is just for the love of the money which they see from wrong role models in older miners who come into the communities showing off sometimes huge takings from the mines.</p>
<p>At times some children end up in mining when parents genuinely run out of resources to help the kids through their education.</p></blockquote>

Gwanda Teenagers Quit School For Gold Panning

<p>Zimbabwe youths have reached out to President Emmerson Mnangagwa over “colonial-era” mining regulations which were stifling youth empowerment.</p>
<p>Speaking at a Zanu PF Youth convention held in Kadoma recently, the chairperson of young small-scale miners, Tatenda Gwinji complained over Exclusive Prospecting Orders (EPOs) saying that they restrained small-scale miners hence the need to remove them. Gwinji said:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>Your Excellency, there is this animal called EPO, and it has caused a lot of problems. Everywhere we go, we are told that there is EPO. Who is EPO? What benefit do we have from EPOs. I plead with you, your Excellency, kindly look into this issue.</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>Zim Morning Post observes that EPOs is the first licence a company obtains before it may explore for minerals in any given area in the country.</p>
<p>The publication further notes that the maximum area considered under EPOs in Zimbabwe is 65 000 hectares, with the minimum uptake size being any company’s discretion and the minimum tenure of EPOs is three years, subject to renewable for another three years upon the lessee’s choice.</p>
<div>President Mnangagwa told the gathering that he would look into the issue adding that EPOs was of no benefit to the majority.</div>

Youths Reach Out To ED Over "Colonial-Era" Mining Regulations

<p>In the video, a co-worker and the relative of the artisanal miner who was shot by police Friday, 26 April shed more light on how it happened.</p>
<p>The co-worker, Oliver Moyo who said he is FD of the Danangwe District Youth In Mining cooperative which the deceased belonged to said:</p>
<blockquote><p>This is a painful incident. We don’t have the powers to take action against the police because we know them to be our protectors. But the way they came today was different from the way they usually come. Usually, when they come with the Sheriff, they call us and they sit down with us and address us, telling us their purpose for the trip.</p>
<p>Today, they just were just wild when they came so much we couldn’t even discuss anything with them. As the leaders of the people here, when we approached them to negotiate with them they attempted to arrest us and we immediately refused because we have not been violent towards them. This angered them as they had intended to take some people with them. They, therefore, discussed amongst themselves and they then threw teargas at us and then they opened fire. They missed an older man here but they hit this young man lying dead here. He was hit at close range. about 10 metres away from the tarred road (where the police fired from).</p>
<p>We were not violent at all. We were just singing Zanu-PF songs like “Povo yaramba” <em>(the povo has refused). W</em>e were singing that we will not be removed. We demanded to speak to the sheriff so he would tell us the reason he wanted to evict us. We wanted to see the documentation that says we can be evicted. Because we or issue is at the Constitutional Court and he doesn’t have the permission to evict us without an order from the ConCourt.</p></blockquote>
<p>A relative of the deceased man said:</p>
<blockquote><p>I am in pain. If he had attacked them maybe it’d be better. He was just standing. He didn’t attack them at all. He was just holding his phone. Why did they shoot him? No one was fighting them. He’s my son in law. He’s a very quiet person. Why not go after the real criminals who are attacking and murdering people. Why come here where people are working quietly?</p></blockquote>

<p>A Zanu-PF activist and artisanal miner lies dead as his colleagues narrate that he was shot by the police. The miner, a member of a cooperative Danangwe District Youth in Mining (DDYM) was part of a standoff between the group and the Chegutu police which resulted in tear gas being fired and live bullets allegedly being used by the police.</p>
