Michael Charumbira, a 31-year-old Zimbabwean national, has been arrested in Australia by the Australian Federal Police in connection to a $828 million methamphetamine shipment destined for a local furniture shop.
According to <a href="https://www.skynews.com.au/australia-news/crime/almost-1-billion-worth-of-meth-bound-for-local-furniture-shop-seized-in-sydney-after-anonymous-tipoff-from-the-united-states/news-story/ec3db23dfeecf0cf4bd68db5af849a2a">Sky News</a>, Charumbira was arrested last Wednesday at a property in Warwick Farm, southwest Sydney, following an anonymous tip-off received from the United States Homeland Security Investigations.
The tip-off linked large drug shipments to the Sydney-based furniture store.
Charumbira appeared before the Downing Centre Local Court on August 1 and will remain in custody until his next court appearance on October 2.
It is unclear whether the drugs were manufactured in the United States, Mexico or elsewhere but police will allege the staggering amount of meth was intended to be distributed “across the eastern seaboard”.
The Zimbabwean was charged with an alleged plot to import an estimated 896 kilograms of methamphetamine hidden inside packages contained within two separate computer numerical control (CNC) machines.
The maximum penalty for the offence is life in prison.
AFP Detective Superintendent Peter Fogarty estimated the almost 900kg amount of methamphetamine could have equated to about 8.9 million individual street deals.

Australia Appoints New Ambassador to Zimbabwe

Tennis star Novak Djokovic has lost his last-ditch bid to stay in Australia after judges rejected his appeal.
A three-judge panel on Sunday cancelled the unvaccinated 34-year-old’s visa, ending his hopes of defending his Australian Open title and winning a record 21st Grand Slam.
The Serb said he is “extremely disappointed” with the judges’ decision to uphold the cancellation of his visa, but will co-operate with officials on his departure from Australia. Here’s Djokovic’s statement in full:

I would like to make a brief statement to address the outcomes of today’s Court hearing.
I will now be taking some time to rest and to recuperate, before making any further comments beyond this.

Australia has recorded zero local COVID-19 transmission cases for 12 days, CNN reports. According to the publication the development was communicated by the country’s Health Minister Greg Hunt who at a press conference on Friday said:
<blockquote>That’s a testament (not just) to the work of our medical professionals, our public health teams, but Australians everywhere for the way in which they’ve observed the distancing requirements, the way they have protected each other, the way that they’ve come out for testing.</blockquote>
Australia which has so far recorded 28,800 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, including 909 deaths is supposed to hold a tennis tournament the Australian Open which will start on 8 February and end on 21 February.
Australia has been under fire after they quarantined athletes who went to the country and some of the athletes reportedly complained about the quarantine and made several demands.

Australia Records Zero Local Transmission COVID-19 Cases In 12 Days

Raj Modi, the Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce, has been left frustrated with having to stay away from home since March this year.
Modi had travelled on private business to Australia when the country imposed a lockdown on 20 March, before Zimbabwe closed its borders to foreigners on 30 March. He said:
<blockquote>My biggest frustration is that I am failing to do my job as a Deputy Minister. It’s all hands on the deck and I am not there to help.
Of all the things that are on my mind, it is that I feel helpless but I am optimistic that sooner rather than later I will get a flight home. As soon as flights resume, I will come home. I also miss my constituency.</blockquote>
Modi runs several businesses in Bulawayo and has also been involved with several philanthropic initiatives.
In 2019 Modi coordinated the raising of close to US$10 000 from well-wishers needed for a woman who had been bitten by dogs to travel to India and be operated on.
Cherish Muchegwa was bitten by her landlord’s 5 rabid dogs and sustained serious injuries and had to be airlifted to India’s Kiran Hospital so that doctors could do skin grafting on her body.

The Zimbabwean government has reportedly sought the help of the Malaysian government in its bid to be readmitted into the commonwealth, The Zimbabwe Independent reports.
According to the publication, Foreign Minister <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Sibusiso_Moyo">SB Moyo</a> wrote to Malaysian Authorities seeking the Asian nation’s authorities asking that they intervene and put forward a bid that Zimbabwe be readmitted into the commonwealth countries at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (Chogm) to be held in June.
Moyo ‘s letter to Malaysia reads in part:
<blockquote>We know the Commonwealth membership does not bring with it trade deals, or increased investment flows at least not directly. But the organisation stands as a symbol of global engagement, a set of standards, and a demonstration of a country’s commitment to continue its path of fundamental reform,
For Zimbabwe, this road to root-and-branch reform began with the election of President Mnangagwa and the government in which I serve, in July 2018. Important gains were made in that contest: the highest election turn-out in Zimbabwean history, with a markedly improved pre-election environment, where all parties were able to campaign freely according to the Commonwealth Election Observer Group which included the green energy entrepreneur and barrister and advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya, Mary-Ann Ooi Suan Kim.
Building on this democratic mandate, Zimbabwe is pursuing a programme of deep and critical policy and structural reforms to re-build our country after decades of isolation. These comprehensive changes will enable the country to boost bilateral Zimbabwe-Malaysia, and Zimbabwe-Commonwealth co-operation and trade.</blockquote>
Moyo reportedly wrote another letter to Australia a couple of weeks before he wrote another letter to Malaysia with the same request.

Zim Engages Malaysia To Do Its Bidding For Commonwealth Re-Admission - Report

Zimbabwean-born cricketer Tarisai Musakanda has been sacked by his Australian club New City after he was convicted of a drink-driving offence.
The 25-year-old top-order batsman recorded a 0.098 reading, almost twice the legal limit, on December 15.
He reportedly failed to inform his club about the matter but told the Albury Local Court in New South Wales that he had become inebriated during the club’s Christmas party. Club president Chris Green said in a statement:
<blockquote>Musakanda’s behaviour is not representative of the values we hold dear at the New City Cricket Club. We as a club take the responsible service of alcohol very seriously.
Musakanda was only at the club function for a relatively brief time and at no stage was he served alcohol while intoxicated. All our bar volunteers have a responsible service of alcohol qualification.</blockquote>
Musakanda has played one Test, 15 one-day internationals and six T20 internationals for Zimbabwe.
He moved to Australia three months ago in search of greener pastures but returned to Zimbabwe following his conviction.

Zimbabwean born Australian based Rugby Player <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/David_Pocock">David Pocock</a> yesterday bid his teammates and fans an emotional goodbye as he is retiring from international Rugby.
Pocock who said his goodbyes after a World Cup quarter-final exit in Japan had this to say to his teammates and fans:
<blockquote>Not how I thought I’d end, just cop it on the chin. I’ll have time to reflect and incredibly grateful for the opportunities I have had in the Wallabies jersey and for the opportunities that rugby’s given me as an immigrant moving to Australia, it’s given me so much opportunity.

David Pocock Retires From Rugby, Bids Fellow Teammates And Fans An Emotional Farewell

<blockquote>In recent weeks Zimbabwe has taken a crucial step forward towards rejoining the Commonwealth, the 53-country group of nations we exited in 2003.
After meeting Zimbabwean president Emmerson Mnangagwa at the side-lines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland stated: “there are a number of areas where Zimbabwe has made real reforms” – and that the process of re-joining “is being accelerated as quickly as possible”.
This is worlds away from two years ago when I played my part in persuading the late president Mugabe to relinquish office after 37 years in power – and much has now changed.
“Important gains were made” in the historic 2018 General Election: the highest turnout contest in Zimbabwean history, with a “markedly improved pre-election environment, where all parties were generally able to campaign freely” – according to the Commonwealth Election Observer Group which included Australian Gary Dunn, the organisation’s former Deputy Secretary-General.
Major reforms that repeal and replace laws infringing personal and economic freedoms are underway, leading a rise in global rankings for freedom of expression – and place Zimbabwe amongst the top-twenty improver nations in the World Bank’s Doing Business 2020 index.
Yet, after two decades of isolation, blanket change is required. Our reform agenda has only just started, and therefore is today, partial – and we do not pretend otherwise. Currently, we are undertaking all these reforms – all the painful processes that are needed and necessary – without any form of external assistance.
But, ultimately, we cannot go it alone – and that’s why Zimbabwe now looks to Australia for support to expedite our re-admission to the Commonwealth. Put simply, our speed and capacity to complete reforms after Mugabe-era isolationism can be accelerated by our Commonwealth return.
Similarly, the bilateral partnership between Australia and Zimbabwe and opportunities for Australian businesses only benefit from the inclusion of both nations within the Commonwealth family.
Despite calls by the Commonwealth Observer Group immediately before the history 2018 vote for the losing side to “look at the larger picture of a successful election” the day after the contest was marred, tragically, by post-election violence.
Without international institutional support or funding the Government swiftly established a fully independent, internationally-led inquiry – the Motlanthe Commission, with its international commissioners (including a former president of South Africa, a British human rights barrister, a former Commonwealth Secretary-General) all hailing from Commonwealth nations.
Zimbabwe has rapidly begun the task of implementing the Commission’s key recommendations – that include reforming legislation on law and order, freedom and liberalisation of the media and electoral reform – and we can expect prosecutions of those responsible to begin next year after the police and prosecution services have completed their post-inquiry investigations.
This process – backed by development assistance in support of the rule of law, good governance, media development, electoral reform and technical cooperation for which the Commonwealth is exceptional (all programmes for which Australia is a key driver) – could only strengthen our own efforts for reconciliation and justice.
The Government’s economic changes are making Zimbabwe once more open for business – and the potential for economic collaboration is enormous in the areas of mining, energy and agriculture where Australia is acknowledged as a world leader. To foster a new, liberal business environment, the government has repealed and replaced Mugabe-era laws that restricted majority foreign ownership in these sectors.
Specifically, the Government has implemented ground-breaking reforms to land tenure laws – and is dispersing compensation to former white farmers removed from farmland dating back to the late nineties and early 2000s – events which led first to Zimbabwe’s suspension from the Commonwealth in 2002 after decision of a “troika” of Commonwealth leaders – including then prime minister John Howard, and later Zimbabwe’s unilateral withdrawal.
Under new laws, farmers are provided with tradable 99-year leaseholds; agriculture sector majority ownership and farmland leases are fully available to both to overseas nationals and international businesses – including, of course, from Australia.
In 2004, only months after Zimbabwe’s withdrawal, John Howard said: “The Commonwealth continues to be an important force for good, extending assistance to its members in time of need and giving hope to those who struggle for freedom and democracy,” adding “We hope one day soon to see a return to democracy in Zimbabwe and for that nation, once again, to be a respected member of the Commonwealth”.
We believe that day has come. And we ask for Australia’s support.

A Zimbabwean former farmer who migrated to Australia, Terry Alderdice, said he is privileged to be “Down Under” after leaving his country of birth at the height of the controversial land reform programme in the year 2000.
Alderdice was forced off his farm in Marondera where he was growing tobacco after the Zimbabwean government seized white-owned farms for redistribution.
Speaking to SBS News, Alderdice sheds light on how he was dispossessed of his land. He said:
<blockquote>There were people coming on to the farm and saying ‘we are taking this farm, we want you off in 30 days’.
I didn’t believe them, I thought it was just a political gimmick for the ruling party to stay in power.
We had gangs of up to 30-40 people surrounding the homestead at night, lighting fires, throwing rocks.
I sent my wife and kids into town and would spend up to eight hours negotiating with a mob outside.
They coerced a lot of the local population through intimidation and bribery, told them just to come on to the farms and take what was there.
They didn’t just want the land, they wanted the farmhouses and infrastructure.
At the age of 50, I came to Australia and started again. We’re very privileged to be here.</blockquote>
Another farmer, David Stead spoke about how he was he was forced off his farm at gunpoint and left fro Harare with a few belongings. He said:
<blockquote>On my wife’s birthday in 2004 we were thrown off at gunpoint and threatened with our lives. We moved into Harare with what we were told we were allowed to take off the farm.
Back then, you had to have political contacts to [be left alone]. I had meetings with the then minister for agriculture, I even met with Mugabe’s sister because she was very influential in the province when we were farming.
But it all came to no end. Our lawyer said ‘look, you’re young, it’s not too late to start over. Get out of the country now before its too late’.</blockquote>

Mai Chisamba To Host Talk Shows In Australia

The Australian Embassy Harare has said that it is concerned by reports of violence and human rights violations occurring in the country. The embassy also spoke out against the violence by opposition protesters last week as well as the disproportionate use of force by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces who used live bullets to quell the protests. At least six people are reported to have died. In a statement the Australian Embassy said,
<blockquote>Australia notes the strong desire of the people of Zimbabwe to move their country forward, as seen by their enthusiastic and largely peaceful participation in the historic elections.
In this context, it was all the more tragic to see violence and unruly behaviour, and excessive use of force by security forces, on 1 August. Reports of further violence and human rights violations are also deeply concerning.
We note the increased openness of the 2018 elections. We urge that this be built on through increased transparency and accountability in the interests of achieving justice for victims, resolving disputes – peacefully and through legal channels – and repairing trust.</blockquote>
However, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/our-military-is-well-trained-and-well-disciplined-sb-moyo-dismisses-reports-of-assaults-by-soldiers/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Sibusiso Moyo has denied allegations of soldiers assaulting civilians as misinformation from social media.</a>

Australia Concerned About Violence  And Human Rights Violations, Calls For Justice For Victims

Zimbabwe was not able to salvage some pride when it lost it’s final triangular series match against Australia by wickets at the Harare Sports Club today. This means that Zimbabwe finishes the tournament without a single win after losing two matches to Australia and another two matches to Pakistan.
Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bat first. The Chevrons managed to score 151/9 with Solomon Mire, the hero from the last match, top scoring with 63 runs. Peter Moor helped with 30. Andrey Tye was the pick of the Australian bowlers with 3/28.
In reply, Australia scored 154/5 with one ball remaining in the innings. Wellington Masakadza did well to dismiss record-breaking Australian captain Aaron Finch for only 3 runs after he was caught by Tarisai Musakanda. His opening partner Alex Carey also went out early for 16 after being caught and bowled by Blessing Muzabarani. Glenn Maxwell top scored with 56 while Blessing Muzarabani was the pick of the Zimbabwean bowlers with 21/3.
Australia and Pakistan will play in the final on Sunday at Harare Sports Club.

Zimbabwe Loses To Australia To Go Entire Series With No Win

Pakistan sealed its place in the T20I triangular series final after defeating Zimbabwe by 7 wickets in the fourth match of the series at Harare Sports Club today. Pakistan will now face Australia in the final with Zimbabwe out of the running.
Zimbabwe batted first and scored 162/4 in the full 20 overs. Solomon Mire played a magnificent innings scoring 94 runs from 63 balls, the highest score by a Zimbabwean batsman in a T20I match.  In response, Pakistan scored 163/3 to win the match by 7 wickets with 5 balls remaining. Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed scored an unbeaten 38 runs while Talat Ali made 44.

Pakistan Defeats Zim Despite Solomon Mire's Record Score

Australia defeated Zimbabwe by 100 runs in the third match of the T20I triangular series played at the Harare Sports Club on Tuesday. The Australians batted first and posted a massive score of 229/2. Blessing Muazabani managed to get the wickets of Aaron Finch (172) and D’Arcy Short (46).
In reply, Zimbabwe fell 100 runs short after it managed to post 129/9 in the full 20 overs. Simon Mire top-scored for Zimbabwe with 28 runs. The Australians totally dominated the match and managed to break a number of records in the match. Some of the records which were broken by Australia include:

<li>Aaron Finch’s score of 172 runs is a new record for the highest T20I score.</li>
<li>The 223 partnership between Finch and Short is the highest stand ever in T20Is.</li>
<li>Aaron Finch’s 172 contributed 75.1 percent of Australia’s total score, a new T20 record.</li>
<li>The 100-run victory was the biggest margin for Australia in T20Is.</li>
<li>Aaron Finch faced 76 balls, a new record in T20Is and second highest in T20. The highest is 77, by Zubair Ahmed in a Haier T20 Cup game in 2014.</li>

Until today the highest totals scored against Zimbabwe were Afghanistan’s 215/6 in 2016 and New Zealand’s 202/5 in 2012. The highest individual score against Zimbabwe was Mohammad Shahzad’s 118 not out.

Australia Breaks Records As It Thrashes Zimbabwe In Third T20I

The Zimbabwe cricket team was defeated by 74 runs by Pakistan on Sunday in the opener of the Twenty20 International (T20I) triangular series. Zimbabwe captain Hamilton Masakadza won the toss and elected to field. Pakistan batted first and scored 182 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. Fakhar Zaman top scored with a career-best 61 runs. However, Zimbabwe’s batsmen failed to chase the seemingly imposing target and were all out for 108. Debutant Tarisai Musakanda top-scored for Zimbabwe with 43 runs.
Zimbabwe was not helped by the fact that five of its senior players, Brendan Taylor, Graeme Cremer, Sikandar Raza, Sean Williams and Craig Ervine were not selected after they allegedly opted to sit out the series unless they were paid their outstanding salaries and match fees. Zimbabwe was also not helped by the fact that Hamilton Masakadza was selected as captain on the day before the match.

Depleted Zimbabwe Drubbed By Pakistan In Tri-Series Opener

Zimbabwe Cricket has named a 17-man squad to face Australia and Pakistan in the Twenty20 international (T20I) triangular series set for July. Convener of selectors Walter Chawaguta told reporters that Brendan Taylor, Sikandar Raza, Graeme Cremer, Sean Williams and Craig Ervine were omitted from the squad because they declared themselves unavailable. Said Chawaguta,
<blockquote>I don’t think there is any doubt in terms of the quality that we have that has been left out of the squad. There are some players that have proven themselves over time and there’s been a massive investment in those players. Our hope is that they avail themselves, and if they do avail themselves then the selectors will have to sit down and see where they fit in in the greater scheme of things. Our hope is that things resolve themselves and those players avail themselves.
…I’ve personally spoken to everyone one of those players and they didn’t make themselves available…Those players were contacted but made themselves unavailable. They didn’t play in the tri-series. Towards the end of the tri-series I personally got hold of every single one of those players and every one of them made themselves unavailable until their issues are sorted out. I had a word with Brendan Taylor yesterday and told him it was time he set the record straight. Hopefully, that happens soon.</blockquote>

We Hope Taylor, Cremer, Williams Will Avail Themselves For T20I Tri-Series: Zimbabwe Cricket

Zimbabwe Cricket will be hosting Australia and Pakistan for a triangular Twenty20 series. The tournament will take place in July and all matches will be played at Harare Sports Club. Each team will play four matches in a round-robin format from July 1-6. The top two will play in the final on July 8.
After the tournament is done, Pakistan will stay behind for a five-match One Day International (ODI) series against Zimbabwe. The ODI series will be played between July 13-22 with all matches being played at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.

Australia, Pakistan To Tour Zim For T20 Series

Suzanne McCourt the outgoing Australian Ambassador has expressed optimism that her country’s relations with Zimbabwe will improve and become more cordial. McCourt expressed these sentiments after meeting with President Emmerson Mnangagwa who she described as “open-minded.” McCourt bade her farewell to Mnangagwa on Wednesday, as she ends the tour she started in 2015. Said, McCourt:
<blockquote>I am encouraged by the frank discussions I had with President Mnangagwa, he is so open-minded and I am optimistic that bilateral relations will now turn for the better.
Certainly, the messaging from His Excellency, the President, has been very positive, wanting to be open for business, wanting to re-engage with countries. The past conversations have not been frank and the fact that I have just had a meeting with His Excellency, the President, is an indication of that. So I am very confident that we can move on and be in a positive development.
We are grateful that we have many things and interests in common. One of those is the mining sector, an interest in developing the mining sector in Zimbabwe. There are many Australian companies who have expertise in mining in Africa. I hope this is one area we can develop, going forward.</blockquote>

Australian Ambassador Optimistic Of Better Relations With Zim After Meeting With "Open-Minded" Mnangagwa

A 41 second CCTV video that has already garnered more than 900 000 views on YouTube, shows a huge 2m long crocodile creep into a swimming pool and attempt to attack two tourists, in what is purported to be <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Kariba" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Kariba</a>. The male tourist leapt out of the pool  leaving his female companion to fend for herself.  The crocodile then turned on the woman, and went for her arm, just as she was about to reach the edge of the pool.  Miraculously she escaped with a few cuts after being aided by another male friend who had been inside when the attack started.
Sebastian Smyth the male friend who rushed to the rescue had this to say:
<blockquote>I just did what came naturally to me, and I’m sure any man would have done the same thing.
Crocs are known to be put off if spooked by an attack.</blockquote>
