The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) has granted permission to three private hospitals and three private pharmacies to prescribe the anti-parasite Ivermectin to treat COVID-19.
The health centres are Avenues Clinic, Mater Dei Hospital, Datlabs Clinic, Kenlink Pharmacies, Village Pharmacy and Racecourse Pharmacy.
Ivermectin is an antiparasitic drug that is used to treat several tropical diseases, including onchocerciasis, helminthiases, and scabies.
It is also being evaluated for its potential to reduce the rate of malaria transmission by killing mosquitoes that feed on treated humans and livestock.
The drug was tried out in Peru before vaccines became available and is popular among Americans who refuse to be vaccinated but the drug has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of any viral infection.
MCAZ projects and public relations officer Shingai Gwatidzo said the six clinics have been allowed to run clinical trials in Zimbabwe on volunteer patients under strict conditions. Said Gwatidzo:

While there are some studies that suggest potential effectiveness in the prevention and management of COVID-19, the existing data from those studies has a number of limitations, which makes it inadequate to prove effectiveness.
The framework has therefore been put in place to obtain scientific data that is relevant to the Zimbabwean context.
The MCAZ will continue to evaluate any emerging peer-reviewed publications or data on the use of Ivermectin for the treatment of COVID-19.
Data obtained from the use of Ivermectin in Zimbabwe will be critical in monitoring the safety and efficacy of Ivermectin within the Zimbabwean population.
</blockquote>
He said the authority had set strict reporting conditions for those wishing to use Ivermectin which included submission of monthly reports detailing patient-specific therapeutic outcomes in terms of efficacy and safety.
The data gathered will then be reviewed to determine whether Ivermectin has any therapeutic value in the management of COVID-19.
Meanwhile, there have been reports of health centres and pharmacies that have been prescribing the drug without approval from the regulatory authority.
Gwatidzo reiterated that the sale and distribution of Ivermectin without the approval of MCAZ was prohibited.

COVID-19 positive cases in Zimbabwe are crawling towards 2600 as the Ministry of Health confirmed that there were  2 512 as of yesterday. 34 people including Zanu PF politician and businessman Keith Guzha, and former RBZ Director Norman Mataruka are among the country’s COVID-19 fatalities.

A nurse at Avenues Clinic in Harare recently tested positive for COVID-19 after she attended to a patient who had been admitted in the casualty section and later tested positive for the disease.
The Avenues Clinic Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Searchmore Chaparadza said the nurse tested positive after taking a Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. He said:
<blockquote>Management would like to advise stakeholders of a COVID-19 incident that occurred within the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Avenues Clinic. One of our nursing staff members tested positive for COVID-19 after taking a PCR test.
The staff member, whose results were received on 22 July 2020, whilst on self-quarantine, was exposed to the virus after attending to a patient who later tested positive for COVID-19. In the meantime, the hospital has traced all contacts for quarantine and tracing.</blockquote>
Chaparadza added that the hospital continues to enforce various measures to ensure the safety of all stakeholders.

Avenues Clinic Nurse Tests Positive For Coronavirus

The Avenues Clinic in Harare has issued new admission regulations following a spike in the number of people testing positive for coronavirus in the country.
Zimbabwe has as of the 1st of July 2020 <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/07/01/more-local-coronavirus-cases-recorded-in-zimbabwe-as-cases-continue-to-rise/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">recorded 605 coronavirus cases.</a>
In a memorandum addressed “all specialists, casualty officers and patrons,” the clinic said all patients coming for planned admissions must be tested for the Coronavirus using the PCR testing method while Emergency patients must be tested using Rapid Diagnostic testing.

In view of the significant increase in the number of people testing positive for COVID-1B in the country, Management has decided that all elective admissions to The Avenues Clinic should have a negative PCR COVID•19 test.

FULL TEXT: Avenues Clinic Reviews Admission Conditions For Patients Following Spike In Covid-19 Cases

The government has reportedly sent a team of eight security officials to monitor Harare Hospital doctor,<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Dr_Peter_Magombeyi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> Peter Magombeyi</a> who is in South Africa for treatment.
The team will keep Dr Magombeyi under a 24-hour-surveillance while he receives specialist medical care in South Africa.
Four highly ranked police officers from the ZRP, two officers from the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Central_Intelligence_Organisation" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Central Intelligence Organisation</a> and two others from the Military Intelligence Department make up the team, according to Zim Morning Post.
The publication’s source disclosed that the government has rejected Dr Magombeyi’s claim that he was abducted. Said the source:
<blockquote>The state is not buying into the abduction story as well as the torture reports.
This explains the heavy security presence at Avenues Clinic where he was admitted for some days.
The state has also dispatched an 8-member team to South Africa to keep him under surveillance.</blockquote>

Dr Magombeyi Put Under Round The Clock Security Surveillance - Report

Acting president of the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA), <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Dr_Peter_Magombeyi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Dr Peter Magombeyi</a> was on Tuesday reportedly assaulted by a man who masqueraded as a police officer at Avenues Clinic.
The police officer who assaulted Dr Magombeyi identified himself as Constable S. Zvinogona. <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/15/junior-doctors-president-dr-peter-magombeyi-abducted-by-3-men-full-text/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">He aggravated an injury on Magombeyi’s arm that was hurt during his alleged abduction over a week ago.</a>
Magombeyi’s father, Kingstone Magombeyi, confirmed witnessing the assault on his hospitalised son. He said:
<blockquote>I saw it. I was there. It happened when we were making efforts to have him discharged.
The person refused to identify himself. He is not the one who I was given by the police and what troubled me was who this was since I also saw the message he received on August 28 saying he will be taken away by a whirlwind.</blockquote>
Dr Magombeyi was due to travel to South Africa for further treatment <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/24/justice-zhou-interdicts-police-from-preventing-dr-magombeyi-to-travel-to-sa-full-text/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">after the High Court interdicted the police</a> from preventing him from travelling.
In a statement late on Tuesday, the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA) said Dr Magombeyi’s health condition may worsen due to delayed medical care with suspicions that he was poisoned by his captors. Part of the statement reads:
<blockquote>High Court has ordered the police to release Dr Peter Magombeyi to go and seek medical attention out of the country. In an attempt to leave the hospital, he was blocked by the brutal police, being harassed and punched. IS THAT PROVIDING SECURITY? It was a drama….

Dr Magombeyi Assaulted In Hospital By 'Police Officer'

The Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors’ Association acting President Dr Peter Magombeyi is in a wheelchair according to South Africa’s Sunday Times. The publication claims the Doctor became wheelchair-bound after he was electrocuted by his abductors.

Dr Magombeyi Now In A Wheelchair After Being Electrocuted - Claims SA's Sunday Times

The comedian pastor on Sunday ignited an internet stir as pictures surfaced of him outside at a Cape Town hospital, Groote Schuur Hospital where the Vice President Constantino Chiwenga is said to be admitted.
The comic pastor who was in the company of a friend and wearing a ZANU PF scarf, however, did not enter the hospital but posed for photos outside.
Chiwenga was on Friday airlifted to South Africa where he is being treated for an undisclosed illness. The government has remained tight-lipped regarding his health.
Chiwenga became ill after the ZANU PF politburo meeting held at the ZANU PF headquarters in Harare on Wednesday. He was ferried to the Avenues Clinic where he was admitted for several hours before he was airlifted to Cape Town.
The Groote Schuur Hospital has a reputation for dealing with patients with cardiac problems and Chiwenga’s visit to the hospital has led to speculation that he has a heart-related complication.

Comedian's Chiwenga Hospital Visit Causes Social Media Stir

Vice President Constantino Chiwenga on Thursday appeared at the  Zanu PF headquarters where he attended a politburo meeting.  A relaxed and smiling Chiwenga posed for pictures discrediting reports that he was ailing or that he had died.
Some reports said that Chiwenga had been hospitalised on Tuesday evening, although the ailment had not been disclosed. The reports went on to say that the Vice President attended a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday from which he later asked to be excused complaining that he was not feeling well.
On Monday, Chiwenga used his Twitter account to dismiss all rumours about any health concerns, saying,

VP Chiwenga Alive And Well After Reports Of Being Hospitalised

Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Energy Mutodi has confirmed that Minister of Foreign Affairs And International Trade Sibusiso Moyo was indeed admitted at the Avenues Clinic. The retired Lieutenant-General did not travel with President Emmerson Mnangagwa last night when he left for New York to attend the United Nations, General Assembly. Moyo is reported to have suffered renal complications leading to his hospitalisation. Unfortunately, this resulted in massive speculation with some people quarters claiming that the minister was in critical condition while others claimed that he had passed on.
However, writing on Twitter on Thursday morning, Mutodi said that Moyo was recovering well from a minor illness. Said Mutodi,

SB Moyo Is Recovering Well From Minor Illness: Minister Mutodi

Avenues Clinic has recorded the birth of the first test tube baby in over two decades after the in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) programme was re-introduced last year.
The procedure was pioneered at the Avenues Clinic in the 1980s by obstetrician, Tony Robertson, but discontinued in 2000 when he briefly left the country. Speaking during the reintroduction of the progamme last year, Avenues Clinic managing director, Merissa Kambani said the 52 people, who were conceived through Robertson’s in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) programme, were now adults.
In-vitro fertilisation is a process where a woman’s eggs and her husband’s sperm are brought together outside the womb in a dish in a laboratory. After embryos have begun forming one or two of the embryos are implanted in the woman’s womb, where they continue developing. Excess embryos formed can then be frozen for future implantation.
