The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared a new coronavirus variant to be “of concern” and named it Omicron.
Initially named B.1.1.529, the new coronavirus variant was first reported to the WHO from South Africa on 24 November and has also been identified in Botswana, Belgium, Hong Kong and Israel.
By Friday, several countries had banned travel from southern Africa, with the UK adding South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia to a so-called “red list”.
Scientists said B.1.1.529 had a large number of mutations and early evidence suggested it is highly transmissible and increased the risk of reinfection.
Viruses, by their nature, tend to change or mutate, over time and a variant becomes a variant of concern when that mutation might affect things like transmissibility, virulence or the effectiveness of vaccines.
On Friday, WHO noted that the number of the Omicron variant appeared to be increasing in almost all of South Africa’s provinces.
The WHO has said it will take several few weeks to understand the impact of the new variant, as scientists work to determine its transmissibility.
It has warned against countries rushing to impose travel restrictions, saying they should look to a “risk-based and scientific approach”.
However, the UK, EU countries and Switzerland have temporarily halted flights from some southern African countries, among them Zimbabwe which has not yet reported cases of the new variant.
South Africa’s Health Minister Joe Phaahla told reporters that there was no justification for imposing the flight bans.

WHO Names New Coronavirus Variant Omicron, Classifies It As A "Variant Of Concern"

The Government says it has intensified monitoring of movements at the country’s points of entry (airports and border posts) to prevent imported cases of a new coronavirus variant, B.1.1.529, that was detected in South Africa on Wednesday.
In a statement this Friday, Vice President and Health and Child Care Minister Constantino Chiwenga said the public should not panic as the Government is well prepared to deal with the variant.
He said to date, there are no cases of the B.1.1.529 detected from the new cases that are being recorded across the country. 
Chiwenga said his Ministry will collect samples among the cases being detected at the Points of Entry for genomic sequencing surveillance.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care wishes to inform the nation that a new variant of SARS-COV-2 now known as B.1.1.529 was detected and reported in South Africa on the 24th of November 2021 after a surge of cases were reported in that country.
The little information known on this new variant is that it has numerous points of mutations as compared to the Delta variant which is predominantly circulating in the country.
Investigations on the significance of this and other characteristics are being done and the public will be notified as information is made available.
The Ministry would want to reiterate the importance of intensifying COVID-19 mitigation measures that the country has put in place which include social and physical distancing, use of face masks at all times, sanitization of hands and surfaces and temperature checks at all gatherings.
It is important also to emphasize that the most important measure available for the prevention of this and other COVID-19 variants is the uptake of the COVID-19 vaccine which the Government is rolling out for free in all provinces and cities.
Zimbabwe is yet to detect this new variant among the few cases being reported in the country.
New samples will be collected for genomic sequencing surveillance from among the cases being detected at the Points of Entry and from any clusters.
Strict monitoring of movements at points of Entry/ Border posts is being intensified to minimize the introduction of this new variant into the country.
The Ministry would also want to assure the nation that there is no need to panic as the above control measures are in place and will mitigate against any variant.

Govt Speaks On New Coronavirus Variant, Says There Is No Need To Panic

Vice President and Minister of Health and Child Care Constantino Chiwenga says the nation should not panic following the emergence of a new coronavirus variant in neighbouring countries as the Government is prepared.
South African health authorities on Thursday announced they had detected a new variant, B.1.1.529, which has been described as, “the worst one we’ve seen so far” since the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) was discovered in Wuhan, China in December 2019.
The variant has infected dozens of people in South Africa and Botswana, Zimbabwe’s neighbours.
Addressing a Health Professions Authority congress on Friday morning, Chiwenga said:

With regards to the recent new COVID-19 variants being reported in the media, the country should not panic because we are very prepared.
The ramping up of our vaccination programme in the past month has seen a marked increase in vaccination uptake.
We remain focused on this very critical initiative that is designed to protect the nation from the negative impact of any new variants.
Meanwhile, our scientists are already doing genomic sequencing for the identification of any new variants hence helping support the timely strengthening of our response.

B.1.1.529 has spread anxiety across the globe with some countries, among them the UK, Israel and Singapore quickly banning travellers from southern Africa.
While a lot of questions about the variant remain unanswered, the variant carries 32 mutations, many of which suggest it is highly transmissible and vaccine-resistant.

Zimbabwe Well Prepared For New Coronavirus Variant - VP Chiwenga

Zimbabwean-born scientist <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Temba_Mliswa">Dr Sikhulile Moyo</a>, who is now based in Botswana, has been credited with detecting the new coronavirus variant that has caused anxiety across the globe.
The variant, called B.1.1.529, has so far been detected in Botswana, South Africa and Hong Kong.
Houriiyah Tegally, a Mauritian scientist, revealed that Dr Moyo and his team in Botswana were the first to sequence B.1.1.529, the newest variant of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2).
She was responding to a tweet by one Sam Scarpino who had lauded South African authorities for promptly sharing the data on the variant. <a href="https://twitter.com/svscarpino/status/1463987612222427141">Wrote Sam Scarpino</a>:

In response, Tegally noted that Dr Moyo and his colleagues in Botswana have conducted ” amazing genomic surveillance” on the African continent and they have some of the fastest turnaround times for sequencing. <a href="https://twitter.com/houzhou/status/1464104039189082112">She tweeted:</a>

According to the <a href="https://aids.harvard.edu/sikhulile-moyo/">Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health</a>, Moyo moved to Botswana after completing his undergraduate degree at the University of Zimbabwe in 1996.
Moyo started working at the Botswana Harvard Partnership as a Lab Assistant in 2003 and was promoted to Laboratory Coordinator, then Deputy Lab Manager, then Lab Manager.
A holder of a Master’s degree in Applied Microbiology and Public Health as of June 2016, Moyo was set to complete his PhD in Medical Virology from Stellenbosch University, South Africa that same year.
Meanwhile, the B.1.1.529 carries 32 mutations, many of which suggest it is highly transmissible and resistant to current vaccines and has more alterations to its spike protein than any other variant.

Zimbabwean-born Scientist Credited With Discovery Of New Coronavirus Variant

South Africa has condemned the recent move by the United Kingdom to put the southern African country back on its travel red list.
Millions of people in South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini on Friday woke up to the news that they have been temporarily barred from travelling to the UK after a new variant of the novel coronavirus was detected in South Africa and Botswana.
South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Naledi Pandor, on Friday, said the decision by the UK was rushed.
Pandor said she would engage with the UK government with the view to persuade them to reconsider the decision. She said:

Our immediate concern is the damage that this decision will cause to both the tourism industries and businesses of both countries.

Late on Thursday, the UK announced that a temporary ban on commercial and private planes travelling from the six southern African countries will come into force from Friday midday until 4 AM Sunday (28 November).

South Africa Says UK Travel Ban Over COVID-19 Variant "Was Rushed"

The United Kingdom has banned flights from six southern African countries with effect from this Friday until Sunday over concerns about a new COVID-19 variant (B.1.1.529) detected in Botswana and South Africa.
From midday today, direct flights from South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe and Namibia are banned from Britain. Health secretary Sajid Javid said:

From midday Friday (Nov 26), South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe and Namibia will be added to the UK’s travel red list… Direct flights from the six countries will be banned from midday Friday until hotel quarantine is up and running from 4 am Sunday (Nov 28).

Starting from Friday, travellers to the UK, who are non-UK and Irish citizens, who have visited the six African nations within the past 10 days, will be refused entry to the UK, while the UK and Irish citizens will be required to self-isolate for 10 days.
Earlier this week, scientists from the UK had warned of the appearance of a COVID-19 strain, which contains 32 mutations, in Botswana.
The South African National Institute of Infectious Diseases later also confirmed that the new strain had been found in South Africa, with 22 cases to date.
UK scientists believe the new variant is highly transmissible and can reduce the effectiveness of current vaccines to as little as 30 per cent.
Earlier on Thursday, South Africa’s Health Minister Joe Phaahla announced the country has experienced a significant rise in new infections, particularly in Gauteng Province.
South African scientists are working to determine what percentage of the new cases have been caused by the new variant.

UK Bans Flights From Zimbabwe Over New COVID-19 Variant Concerns

A new variant of the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) has been detected in South Africa.
The new COVID-19 strain, B.1.1.529, has been found in Botswana and Hong Kong (China) and has an extremely high number of mutations.
A South African professor, Alex van den Heever of the Wits School of Governance said it is not yet clear if current vaccines will offer protection against the variant. He said:

It is worrying that such a variant has occurred, but I think it is also inevitable in a way that we are going to see this.
The real question is whether past variants and vaccines will still protect us against this particular variant. And I haven’t really seen any analysis of that yet.
The question also is whether or not this particular variant is going to be more infectious than, for instance, the Delta variant, and therefore might actually spread very quickly. We don’t know.

South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases reported a rise in COVID-19 cases in Gauteng Province.
Reports suggest that the neighbouring country could be heading into a 4th wave around the festive season in the coming weeks.

New COVID-19 Variant Detected In South Africa
