The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has announced that the contract of Warriors head coach Baltemar Brito will expire at the end of December. ZIFA needs to negotiate a new contract and work permit for the coach, as his current contract was based on his tenure with Highlanders, which also ends on December 31. There is a risk that if ZIFA delays the process, Brito could be persuaded to work elsewhere, leaving the Warriors without a coach for upcoming assignments in the next year.
Initially, when ZIFA hired Brito two months ago to lead the Warriors in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, it was believed that his contract, along with fitness and conditioning coach Antonio Torres, would run until June 24, when the ZIFA normalisation committee’s tenure ends. However, it has now been clarified that their contracts were aligned with their time at Highlanders.
ZIFA normalisation committee chairman, Lincoln Mutasa, explained that they will need to revisit the contracts and decide whether to seek an extension. Mutasa told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/sport/article/200020550/warriors-risk-losing-brito">NewsDay</a>:

 We gave them up to the end of December. We could not give them contracts that were different from that of Highlanders. Their contracts have to be re-visited, so we have to sit down as the normalisation committee on whether to seek to apply for an extension. Their current or initial contracts were in line with that of Highlanders.
We have to re-apply to the Registrar General’s Office in terms of them getting their work permits. When they signed, we were relying on the Highlanders’ contracts.

Brito has already led the Warriors in three matches, including a friendly against Botswana and two FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Nigeria.
Brito, originally from Brazil, joined Highlanders last year and quickly impressed with their strong performance in the Premier Soccer League. ZIFA was attracted to his coaching abilities, as he has previously worked with renowned coach Jose Mourinho during his time at FC Porto in Portugal, Chelsea in England, and Inter Milan in Italy.

Brito's Contract As Warriors Coach Expires At The End Of December - ZIFA

Highlanders Football Club has confirmed <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/12/04/baltemar-brito-has-left-highlanders-and-returned-to-portugal/">the departure</a> of head coach Baltemar Brito and his assistant Antonio Torres. In a statement seen by Pindula News, the club also known as Bosso said the termination of the contract was mutual. Read the statement:

The Club would like to inform its members, fans and all other stakeholders of the departure of coach Brito and assistant coach Antonio Torres.
Coach Brito and Torres’ contracts with the club end on the 31st of December 2023, the club and the two coaches have mutually agreed not to extend their stay with the club beyond the stated period.
The club thanks Mr. Brito and Mr. Torres for their time with the club and also wishes them all the best in their new endeavors.

Torres had already <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/12/04/baltemar-brito-has-left-highlanders-and-returned-to-portugal/">taken to social media to announce</a> that they had left the Bulawayo-based giants. He bade farewell to Highlanders fans:

Brito became the head coach of Highlanders Football Club in June 2022 but was unable to lead them to their first league title since 2006. He currently has a contract with the Zimbabwe national team, the Warriors, as their coach, which he took on in September. Brito achieved two draws in the World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Nigeria.

Highlanders Has Confirmed The Departure Of Coach Brito And Assistant Torres

Highlanders’ head coach, Baltemar Brito, has left the club and returned to Portugal after less than two seasons. His departure was confirmed by his assistant, Antonio Torres, who stated that they had reached an agreement with the club to part ways, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/sport/article/200020477/brito-leaves-highlanders">NewsDay</a> reported. Torres, who also acted as Brito’s translator, revealed their plans to travel from Germany to Portugal. He said:

We are in Germany now en route to Portugal. I  can confirm that we are done with Highlanders, there is not much I can talk about but we have agreed with the club.
</blockquote>
He also took to his Facebook page to express his gratitude and bid farewell to Highlanders. He said:

With the departure of Brito and Torres, Highlanders face a significant change in their coaching staff. It remains uncertain who will take over as the new coach and how this transition will impact the team’s performance. The Bulawayo-based club has not yet commented on the departure of coach Baltemar Brito. Reports from last month suggested that the club would not renew Brito’s contract when it expires on 31 December 2023. Brito, who took over the team in June last year, could not lead Highlanders to their first league title since 2006. Despite uncertainty about his future, he was appointed as the coach of the national team, the Warriors, in September. Brito guided Zimbabwe to two draws in the World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Nigeria. With his departure from Highlanders, he will now focus on his role as the national team coach.

Baltemar Brito Has Left Highlanders And Returned To Portugal

Highlanders Football Club has reportedly given head coach Baltemar José de Oliveira Brito the greenlight to take up the offer from the ZIFA Normalisation Committee to become interim Warriors coach.
This comes after the chairman of the ZIFA Normalisation Committee, Lincoln Mutasa, wrote to Bosso seeking the club’s permission to approach the 71-year-old over the vacant Warriors post.
<a href="https://www.soccer24.co.zw/2023/09/20/highlanders-approve-britos-warriors-appointment/">Soccer24</a> quoted an unnamed Highlanders official as saying the club has agreed to let Brito become the national team coach. Said the official:

As the club leadership, we have agreed to let the coach (Brito) become the national team coach. We actually feel honoured by the recognition, in the sense that he will lead the revival of the senior men’s national team after the lifting of the FIFA suspension.

Brito, a Brazilian, was famous Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho’s assistant at Chelsea (England) and Inter Milan (Italy).
He is set to be offered a contract that runs concurrently with the Normalisation Committee’s tenure which ends in mid-2024.
