Wife to former Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi, Mrs Barbara Mzembi has approached the High Court claiming defamation damages amounting to $100 000 from Big Time Strategic Group (Private) Limited, its employee Mr Alson Darikayi, the Daily News and its reporter Vasco Chaya.
Mzembi argues that Big Time Strategic Group tarnished her image through an article titled “Sponsor dumps Miss Tourism Zimbabwe” published in the Daily News linking her to alleged misappropriation of funds.  According to Mzembi’s declaration, Mr Darikayi was quoted in the article as saying:
<blockquote>We pulled out of the deal mainly to protect our brand as Big Time Strategic Group. We feared the manner in which the pageant was being run might indelibly dent our image.</blockquote>
Mzembi argues that Dakarayi’s statement was wrong and defamatory considering that they came after a statement claiming that Big Time Strategic Group which invested about $2 million into Miss Tourism pageant in 2016 reportedly pulled out of the pageant after citing financial mismanagement.

Mzembi's wife sues former Miss Tourism sponsor, Daily News for defamation

Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi and his wife Barbara Mzembi have been accused of abusing US$80 000 which they got from Government to host the Miss Tourism beauty pageant. Mzembi and his wife are believed to be hiding at the Cuban embassy in Harare.
The allegations were made by Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) CEO Karikoga Kaseke who explained to The Herald the reason behind the withdrawal of the Miss Tourism licence from Mzembi’s wife Barbara. Kaseke said that Barbara should have raised the funds herself and not used her husband’s influence to access Government funds. Said Kaseke:
<blockquote>Mzembi’s wife flouted the terms of the agreement, one of whose terms was to mobilise resources for the event and make sure the corporate world got involved and made the event successful outside of government; which was the reason why we licence it out… The fact that the Mzembi’s themselves admitted that they got such a great amount of money from government for what should in essence be a private event for which they ought to have fundraised boggles the mind and it is not fair. People should not get preferential corrupt privileges because they know people in power. It is something the new dispensation should do away with.</blockquote>

Walter Mzembi & wife accused of abusing Miss Tourism funds

Karikoga Kaseke the chief executive officer of the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) has said that his organisation regretted giving the Miss Tourism Zimbabwe (MTZ) pageant licence to Barbara Mzembi, wife of newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs Walter Mzembi. Kaseke said he regretted the fact that he had not seen the conflict of interest even though  Walter Mzembi was the minister of tourism and hospitality industry when the licence was given to his wife.
Addressing a press conference, Kaseke said:
<blockquote>We have discussed this at board level and the board blasted me for issuing the licence to Mrs Mzembi saying why did you do that, didn’t you see conflict, I had not seen conflict until conflict showed itself.
It could have been anyone else as [because] we did not consider her as the minister’s wife, but we considered her as, maybe, fulfilling the long-term requirement that someone from the private sector or a private organisation should run Miss Tourism Zimbabwe.
We are not running Miss Tourism Zimbabwe. We can’t run it when we have issued the licence to a private player. When we issued the licence to a private player you don’t do it yourself, we must put our hands off and allow the private player to go ahead and do the pageant.</blockquote>

We Regret Giving Miss Tourism Licence To Mzembi's Wife - Zimbabwe Tourism Authority

During a Press conference held in Harare yesterday, Miss Tourism Zimbabwe patron Barbara Mzembi said that the pageant belonged to the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA). Her comments come after ZTA head of corporate affairs, Sugar Chagonda’s claimed that they surrendered the pageant licence to Mzembi under her Miss Tourism Zimbabwe Trust in 2014. Chagonda’s claims come after NewsDay published a story on Tuesday saying ZTA were responsible for the pageant.
Said Mzembi:
<blockquote>This pageant is not in the name of Barbara Mzembi. It belongs to Zimbabwe Tourism Authority and they are the ones who have been running with this pageant for years. They proposed to me to be the patron, but it is still their pageant and I was only there to run it for them. Up to today, I have not received any letter saying it’s now mine and they are no longer involved, so it’s not official 
to me.</blockquote>
NewsDay reports that ZTA chief executive Karikoga Kaseke was not available for comment to clarify on who really owns the pageant.

Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Walter Mzembi is reportedly engaged in a war of words with Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) chief executive Karikoga Kaseke over the sponsorship of the Harare International Carnival because the sponsor allegedly dumped Mzembi’s wife’s project. Mzembi ordered Kaseke to drop the name of sponsor Bigtime Strategic Group saying the carnival is a government project and should not carry the name of a sponsor. An article in the daily publication, Daily News, questions Mzembi’s motivation saying that the dispute over the sponsorship only started after Bigtime Strategic Group dumped the Miss Tourism Zimbabwe pageant which is run by Mzembi’s wife, Barbara.

Speaking to Standard reporter Kennedy Nyavaya (KN), Bigtime Strategic Group spokesperson Alson Darikayi (AD) confirmed that there was rivalry between Mary Chiwenga and Barbara Mzembi and explained that the group withdrew sponsorship from Mzembi’s Miss Tourism Zimbabwe because of misunderstandings.

<blockquote>KN: There is a lot of speculation and insinuations surrounding Bigtime Strategic Group’s recent pull out from the MTZ pageant. Can you please give us a detailed account as to what really happened?
AD: We proposed as the anchor sponsor a way forward in this world of pageants, as it is, there is rivalry within pageantry in Zimbabwe and choosing to sponsor the other leaving out the other is seen as waging a war with the other which obviously divides the nation. We as Bigtime Strategic Group do not want to sponsor activities that divide the nation, our view is that pageants should have united even though in their diversity and come together to produce one big national flagship pageant. However, our suggestions, views and positions were not accepted. As such, we looked at the value derived from the pageants as a business. We looked at reputation and the relationship going forward and we decided that it will be best if we pulled out [from MTZ], which we did. The unwavering commitment and dedication from Bigtime Strategic Group towards Zimbabwe as a country cannot be reduced to us pulling out. We remain committed to the country and also remain committed to other initiatives that enhance the image of the country such as the Harare International Carnival, Gwanda Gospel Festival among others.</blockquote>

Sponsor confirms rivalry between Mary Chiwenga & Barbara Mzembi, explains why he pulled out of Miss Tourism

The <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Tourism_Authority">Zimbabwe Tourism Authority </a>(ZTA) has unveiled South Africa-based Zimbabwean businessman, Justice Maphosa, as sponsor of the 2016 edition of Miss Tourism Zimbabwe scheduled for November 25 at the Harare International Conference.
Maphosa, through his Big Time Strategic Group and SA Zim Business Connection, was unveiled as the main sponsor at a colourful ceremony held at Pablo’z club in <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Borrowdale">Borrowdale</a>. Speaking at the ceremony the matron of Miss Tourism Zimbabwe <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Barbara_Mzembi">Barbra Mzembi</a> said,
<blockquote>It’s sad to note that the pageantry industry in the country has been quite damaged that corporates no longer believe in it. I struggled to make some believe in it. I wanted to lead by example and show everyone that pageantry can be of honour, good in marketing (strategies) and could be very useful for the girl child.  am grateful that we got a sponsor who is not based in Zimbabwe but was born in Zimbabwe.</blockquote>
She also revealed that the pageant’s two princesses will be named Miss Agro-Tourism and Miss City Tourism.

Miss Tourism Zimbabwe unveils South African sponsor

Miss Tourism Zimbabwe patron <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Barbara_Mzembi">Barbara Mzembi </a>has urged university and college students to participate in auditions being carried out nationwide in search of the country’s most beautiful young women with potential to be Zimbabwe’s next tourist ambassador.
Speaking during the pageant’s auditions at a Bulawayo hotel on Wednesday, ahead of the grand finale on November 25 in Harare, Mzembi said,
<blockquote>Our new requirements stipulate that the girls should range from 18 to 24 years of age and should have at least a minimum of “A” Level educational passes. That’s a must have. So, we urge educated girls from tertiary institutions to participate in our auditions as we are looking at both the beauty and the brains that will lift the country’s flag high. After the auditions, we will do background follow-ups on these girls, making sure that the information they provided is true. We want to eliminate the drama and controversy that has marred the industry in the past years.</blockquote>
The Bulawayo auditions were the fifth after <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Harare">Harare</a>, <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Masvingo">Masvingo</a>, <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Mutare">Mutare</a> and <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Victoria_Falls">Victoria Falls</a>.
Eighteen girls will be selected to join the boot camp set to begin on November 17 where they will go through intensive training, education on public relations, tourism, history and modelling after which three models will be trimmed off to remain with 15 finalists.
