<p>Mashonaland traditional leaders have conducted rituals at Silvermoon and Cricket 3 mines in Battlefields Kadoma meant to cleanse the area following February’s mine disaster.</p>
<p>28 artisanal miners perished after flood waters cascaded into the mines, washing down miners down the shafts.</p>
<p>Mashonaland West provincial Chiefs Council chairperson Senator Chief Ngezi (Peter Pasipamire) said that there were five spirit mediums who were involved in the cleansing ceremony. He said:</p>
<blockquote><p>After the catastrophic disaster at Battlefields, five spirit mediums came and conducted a cleansing ceremony at the mine. There are reports of mysterious sightings of snakes near the mines and those are bad signs.</p>
<p>To avert a similar disaster, the cleansing ceremony was necessary since many lives were lost.</p>
<p>Locals were also given time to interact with spirit mediums and participated in the proceedings. The ceremony was completed successfully.</p></blockquote>
<p>While five chiefs, namely Chiefs Chivese, Musambakaruma, Neuso, Nhume and Nemakonde were conducting the rituals, Mhondoro-Ngezi district administrator Mrs Fortunate Muzulu said that illegal mining activities by gold panners were dangerous. She said:</p>
<blockquote><p>There is life threatening illegal mining activities taking place in Muzvezve Constituency especially at Pingu where miners are under Claw Dam, which is dangerous.</p>
<p>We have engaged relevant authorities like Environment Management Agency, Mines and Mining Development Ministry, the police and other stakeholders to resolve the issue urgently.</p></blockquote>

Traditional Leaders Conduct Rituals At Battlefields Mine Disaster Site

<p>The remaining two bodies of miners who were trapped underground in a mine at Battlefields near Kadoma were brought to the surface on Thursday.</p>
<p>Eight people were rescued alive after being trapped underground for four days when mine shafts at the Cricket 3 Mine were inundated with flood waters on February 12. 28 miners lost their lives.</p>
<p>Speaking during a post-cabinet media briefing in Harare on Thursday, acting Information Minister Sekai Nzenza said:</p>
<blockquote><p>This brings closure to the rescue efforts pertaining to the Battlefields Mine Disaster. Cabinet once again expresses its deepest condolences to the affected families and the artisanal mining fraternity in general.</p></blockquote>
<p>The Battlefields Mine Disaster has prompted Cabinet Ministers to pledge law reforms to legalise the activities of the artisanal miners which they hope will lead to greater safety.</p>

Battlefields Mine Rescue Efforts End With Final Two Bodies Retrieved

<p>Two of the four bodies that were trapped at Cricket Mine were retrieved this morning after 16 days of de-watering.</p>
<p>This brings the death toll to 26 after 24 bodies were retrieved and positively identified last week at Silvermoon mine. Eight miners were rescued after spending four days without eating and drinking anything. Joseph Zvitiki whose son Cosmick is among the retrieved said burial would be held tomorrow.</p>

<p>Deputy Minister of Mines and Mining Development Polite Kambamura, has said that the government responded swiftly enough to the Battlefields mining disaster.</p>
<p>Kambamura was speaking at Speaking at a Monetary Policy Review breakfast meeting organised by the Zimbabwe Miners Federation yesterday. He said a “Government team arrived a few moments after the disaster was reported.”</p>
<p>Said Kambamura:</p>
<blockquote><p>I want to make it clear that contrary to what is being reported in the media, Government responded on time to the mine disaster. The size of shafts and their nature, which are not straight made it difficult for pumps to be used to de-water the shafts. We had to resort to the use of smaller pumps, which takes time, efforts to pump water out of the mines is still ongoing as of now.</p></blockquote>

<p>Police released the names of the 24 miners who perished in the Battlefields disaster as search efforts continue to account for at least four others reportedly trapped in another shaft.</p>

<p>Survivors of the Battlefields Mine Disaster narrated their ordeal from the fateful night when floodwaters washed into the mine shafts to the day when they were extracted from the bowels of the earth.</p>
<p>A survivor from Cricket No 3 Mine, Tinahse Ndaruza had this to say:</p>
<blockquote><p>It was a terrible experience as we spent three days without eating. We survived on water during those days.</p>
<p>The hope of making it alive was slowly fading as the days progressed. l did not stop praying during this time day and night asking God to help me make it out alive.</p>
<p>As we tried to escape the disaster we stepped on at least 10 bodies. The possibility of others coming out alive from our shaft are now very slim. However, it is possible that they could have found somewhere to hide as we did.</p></blockquote>
<p>Another survivor, Silent Napulu said tragedy struck as they were about to get out of the pit. He said:</p>
<blockquote><p>We had finished our mining activities and on our way out we were pushed backwards by water and luckily we managed to climb on a rock where the water level was low. That is where we were perched for the past four days.</p></blockquote>

<p>The Islamic Republic of Iran on Tuesday offered its deepest sympathies and condolences to the government and nation of Zimbabwe over a mine flooding accident that left dozens of miners dead.</p>
<p>Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Bahram Ghasemi, in a statement, voiced his deepest regret over the tragic Battlefields Mine Disaster which left scores of miners dead and other unaccounted for.</p>

Iran Extends Sympathy To Zim Over Battlefields Mine Disaster

<p>Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, July Moyo has said the search at Silver Moon and Cricket mines in Battlefields will continue until the last miner or body is found.</p>
<p>Minister Moyo visited the scene of the disaster and assured the bereaved families and grieving friends the search exercise will be exhaustive. Said Moyo:</p>
<blockquote><p>Our system is structured in such a way that it initiates response to disasters from the local level. Teams at the local level are the first point of reaction in cases of disaster. Going forward, while the search for bodies at Silver Moon will continue, concentration is now on Cricket Mine where four people are confirmed to be still underground, according to records on registers. <p>President Emmerson Mnangagwa mourned artisanal miners who perished after mining shafts at Cricket No. 3 and Jongwe Mining Cooperative in Mhondoro-Ngezi were flooded on Tuesday.</p>
<p>It is estimated that between 60 and 70 people died in the flooded shaft incident. So far eight people have been rescued while 24 bodies have been retrieved from the mine. The tragedy has been declared a State of Disaster. Addressing thousands of Zanu-PF supporters at Rutenga Business Centre on Saturday, President Mnangagwa said that incident was unfortunate. Said Mnangagwa:</p>

Mnangagwa Mourns Battlefields Mines Victims

<p>Government has managed to positively identify 23 out of 24 bodies retrieved at Battlefields mines.</p>
<p>Government is now working with relatives to make burial arrangements. Rescuers managed to retrieve 19 bodies by midnight after five others had been hoisted to the surface earlier on Saturday.</p>
<p>Eight people who were retrieved alive yesterday were taken to Kadoma General Hospital. Seven of them have since been discharged after assessment by doctors. The remaining survivor is reportedly in the intensive care unit due to the severity of the injuries and trauma he suffered while underground.</p>

<p>The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) expressed sorrow over the Battlefields Mine Disaster which has so far claimed 24 lives.</p>
<p>ZCTU posted a statement on its <a href="https://twitter.com/ZctuZimbabwe/status/1097047410642219008" rel="noopener" target="_blank"><strong>Twitter page</strong></a> which reads as follows:</p>
<blockquote><p>We are deeply saddened by the death confirmations of artisanal miners whose bodies have so far been retrieved. We remain hopeful that more will still be rescued. These are workers who had been contributing to the nation. They deserved better and quicker assistance from the Government.</p></blockquote>
<p>The accident occurred at two gold mines near Kadoma, Cricket Mine (owned by RioZim Limited) and another smaller mine privately operated. Casualties are expected to rise as there are more people believed to have been trapped under floodwaters for over 5 days.</p>

ZCTU Consoles Families Of Battlefields Mine Disaster

<p>24 bodies have been retrieved from collapsed Battlefields Mine shafts.</p>
<p>Eight miners were rescued on Saturday morning with the first survivor said to have been rescued at around 07:10 hours. The eight rescued have since received medical attention and are in a stable condition.</p>
<p>Rescue operations are still continuing to retrieve the bodies of the remaining trapped miners.</p>

<p>Five artisanal miners were rescued today after being trapped underground for about four days at Battlefields mines in Kadoma. The first two were retrieved at around 7 am today.</p>
<p>Yesterday, President Mnangagwa declared a state of disaster the Silver Moon and Cricket Mines disasters in Kadoma. As a result of the declaration by President Mnangagwa, the government will assist in the burial of all the victims.</p>
<p>It is suspected that the number of victims in the two mine disasters could be between 60 and 70. Some eyewitnesses believe that the number could be as high as 100.</p>


Battlefields Mine Disaster: 5 Miners Rescued

<p>Government through the Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing July Moyo has appealed for donations to rescue victims of the Cricket 3 and Jongwe Mining Cooperative (Formerly Silver Moon) Mining disaster.</p>
<p>Government is looking for US$200 000 to pump water out of the shafts, feed the families of the bereaved and rescue teams as well as transportation and burial of the victims. In a statement declaring the accident a national disaster, Moyo said:</p>
<blockquote><p>An estimated cost of US$200 000 is required to pump out the water, feed the bereaved families and teams on the ground, transportation and burial of the victims in their respective districts. Given the magnitude of this disaster, we kindly appeal to development partners and the corporate world for assistance as cash and kind. Battlefields Mine Disaster: Govt Appeals For US$200 000

<p>President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared a state of disaster the Silver Moon and Cricket Mines disasters in Kadoma.</p>
<p>As a result of the declaration by President Mnangagwa, the government will assist in the burial of all the victims.</p>
<p>The Director of the Civil Protection Department, Nathan Nkomo told ZBC News that the relatives of each victim will receive $1000 which will go towards meeting burial costs plus one blanket to each victim among other forms of assistance.</p>
<p>It is suspected that the number of victims in the two mine disasters could be between 60 and 70. Some eyewitnesses believe that the number could be as high as 100.</p>
<p>As of now, no casualties have been reported but there are fears that there could be no survivors.</p>

<p>MDC president Nelson Chamisa said that he is extremely concerned with the Battlefields Mine Disaster in which 23 people were trapped in mine shafts by floodwaters, some as deep as 100m.</p>
<p>The disaster struck on Tuesday night after heavy rains had pounded the area resulting in the water washing down the pits, giving no time for the miners to escape. <a href="https://twitter.com/nelsonchamisa/status/1096277935084965888" rel="noopener" target="_blank"><strong>Writing on social media</strong></a> on Thursday night, Chamisa said:</p>
<blockquote><p>Extremely concerned …the situation regarding casualties in the Battlefields mine disaster near Kadoma which could rise from the initial 23 reported yesterday is very disturbing. Our prayers are with all the affected and their families.</p></blockquote>

Chamisa Comforts The Families Of Trapped Battlefields Miners

<p>There are fears that the number of casualties at the Battlefields mine disaster could rise to 50 as more miners could have entered the shafts without being recorded. However, so far no deaths have been confirmed but time is running out to find survivors.</p>
<p>Initial reports had indicated that 23 miners had entered the pits before floods swept into the pits, washing down shafts and tunnels on Tuesday night.</p>
<p>A supervisor at one of the pits at Cricket Mine, Alex Mbudzi said that they recorded 23 people who entered the pit on the fateful night. He said:</p>
<blockquote><p>There were heavy rains on Tuesday night from around 10 pm. However, we did not expect anything bad to happen, but suddenly we found out that water was getting into our cabin while pits were submerged in water.</p></blockquote>
