On Thursday, March 14, the ZIFA Eastern Region Division One League (ERSL) declared Bikita Minerals winners in their contentious final match of the 2023 season against Grayham.
The decision came after Grayham was found guilty of fielding an ineligible player. The ERSL then awarded Bikita Minerals victory on a 3-0 scoreline.
These three crucial points secured the ERSL 2023 championship for Bikita Minerals, edging out Tenax, who would have clinched the title had the lithium miners failed to defeat Grayham.
As a result, Bikita Minerals is set to occupy the ERSL slot in the 2024 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.
However, if Tenax appeals against the March 14 ruling, Bikita Minerals’ promotion will be suspended.
On its official X page, Tenax has indicated that it has moved past the PSL promotion dispute. It said:

For the purpose of continuity and progress, some issues need a ceasefire. We knew the outcome before the announcement. Lessons learnt, geared for the next fight.
We remain resolute that football must be won first before individual wins. Welcome New season. We are here to play.

Meanwhile, Bikita Minerals spokesperson, Collen Nikisi, said they are excited about the idea of playing topflight. Said Nikisi (<a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/bikita-minerals-ready-to-roll/">via The Herald)</a>:

As a club, we have not been moved a bit by everything that happened. We have a solid case according to the constitution and statutes of the region. So we were confident that it was going to come our way as rules are rules.
We started our training camp back in December. The boys have been committed and remained focused all this time though it might have affected them one way or the other but I can confirm everything is under control and we are ready to go and play in our upcoming fixtures.
We are excited to play our first match and compete with our opponents. We are looking forward to having a positive result as we are seeking to survive relegation.

Bikita Minerals have appointed Saul Chaminuka as their head coach. The technical team is also comprised of Anorld Jani, Max Nyamupangedengu, Tongai Mugeji and Dylan Chivandire.

Bikita Minerals Secures PSL Promotion Victory Over Tenax

Premier Soccer League (PSL) bosses have vowed that the Castle Lager premiership will kick off next week even without representatives from the ZIFA Eastern Region Division One whose winners are yet to be determined.
Speaking on the sidelines of the renewal of a sponsorship deal between the PSL and Delta Beverages through their Castle Lager brand in Harare on Thursday, 22 February, Jere said it won’t be novel for a club to have outstanding matches during a season as it has happened elsewhere. He said (via H-Metro):

We are going to start our matches in the first week of March. The season will be opened by the Castle Challenge Cup which kicks off this weekend and it will be followed by the league matches next week. What does that mean?
It means that the team that is going to come from Eastern Region Division One which hasn’t been availed to us by ZIFA as yet, will have outstanding matches. It is very common everywhere, even in Europe.
We cannot stop the league because the reason why we planned an early season kick-off is to avoid fixture congestion along the way as well as accommodate international fixtures given that some of our teams in the league will also be playing in the African Safari.
We put all those things into account to then say let’s start our league early so that we accommodate all that.

The 2023 ZIFA Eastern Region Division One season ended amid controversy after the runners-up, Bikita Minerals, accused Grayham of using an ineligible player. The match had ended in a 1-1 draw.
Tenax won the title on the final day of the season after a thumping victory over Rusitu Tigers 6-1 and automatically won the sole ticket into the Premiership.
Bikita Minerals was awarded three points and a 3-0 scoreline by the Eastern Region league following their complaint against Grayham.
The awarding of the points placed Bikita Minerals on top of the log standings, and Tenax in second position. Tenax had finished a point above Bikita Minerals.
ZIFA had initially unilaterally endorsed the Eastern Region board’s decision to promote Bikita Minerals but later backtracked on its earlier decision after Tenax lodged a late appeal.
The Appeals Committee pushed the case to the Disciplinary Committee, who are scheduled to hear the matter this weekend.

Bikita Minerals, Tenax Dispute Won't Affect PSL Season - Jere

The start of the 2024 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season may be delayed as football authorities are still to decide which team will be promoted from the Eastern Region Division One League to the top flight between Bikita Minerals and Tenax.
This comes after the ZIFA Appeals Committee adjourned Tuesday’s hearing on the matter to 16 February, a day before Dynamos and Ngezi Platinum Stars clash in the Castle Challenge Cup, marking the commencement of the 2024 season.
The Premier Soccer League was set to kick-off on 24 February a week later, to avoid fixtures congestion.
As reported by <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/the-eastern-region-title-circus-plays-on/">The Manica Pos</a>t, a three-member tribunal — with Vote Muza as chairman — sitting in the name of the ZIFA Appeals Committee, invited Tenax FC, Bikita Minerals and Eastern Region Soccer League’s administration for Tuesday’s hearing.
The hearing was initially set for last week on Tuesday but was postponed to Tuesday this week by the ZIFA Appeals Committee.
This was done to allow all parties involved to be conversant with Tenax FC’s heads of arguments and also respond in writing before a proper hearing could be conducted.
This led to the postponement of the matter to 16 February, with Dynamos and Ngezi scheduled to clash on the 17th.
ZIFA chief executive officer, Yvonne Mapika Manwa, wrote to the ERSL to attend the Appeals Committee hearing this week, which will now be done in two weeks.
<h2>How did it come to this?</h2>

However, Eastern Region Division One League, acting on their understanding of their rules and regulations, had concluded that Bikita had won the 2023 championship race thereby gaining promotion to the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.
This was after Bikita Minerals won its appeal over their final league match against Grayham, from which they were awarded three points.
The club had argued that Grayham used an ineligible player in a match that ended in a draw.
The awarding of the points placed Bikita Minerals on top of the log standings, and Tenax in second position.

Bikita Minerals, Tenax PSL Promotion Dispute Far From Resolved

ZIFA Eastern Region Division One side Tenax Football Club are not happy with the boardroom decision to promote Bikita Minerals Football Club in their place.
Tenax had seemingly won the championship on the final day of the 2023 season but the Eastern Region Soccer League later promoted Bikita Minerals into the Castle Lager Premiership via a boardroom decision.
Tenax had finished a point above Bikita Minerals after winning their game 6-1 at home while the lithium miners had been held to a 1-1 draw at Grayham.
Bikita Minerals were awarded maximum points from their final match of the season on the basis that Grayham had used an ineligible player.
The awarding of the points placed Bikita Minerals on top of the log standings, and Tenax in second position.
Tenax have since reached out to the ZIFA Normalisation Committee as well as the Sport and Recreation Commission (SRC) for possible intervention.
<a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/tenax-approach-zifa-sports-commission/">Chronicle</a> quoted Tenax chairman Stefani Masina as saying:

We are not happy with the Eastern Region Soccer League’s decision to award maximum points to Bikita Minerals and their subsequent promotion of the club into the Premiership.
We believe that this was a pre-planned thing meant to disadvantage us. We have reached out to the SRC as well as the (ZIFA) Normalisation Committee for assistance on the matter.
To us, it is clear that the parties involved connived to snatch Premiership promotion from us.
There several irregularities that we raised in our letter of complaint. We were surprised to learn from the media when the ESRL leader Davison Muchena urged clubs to acquaint themselves with the laws of the game when the same league is presiding over a breach of the same laws. We just want football to be the winner.

In their letter of complaint, Tenax queried why the match between Bikita Minerals and Grayham was allowed to proceed after one of the clubs had complained about the use of an illegible player.
To support their argument, Tenax cited an incident sometime in July when they complained about the intended use of two ineligible players by Renco Mine FC.
Following their complaint, consultations were instantly made over the phone with ERSL officials, who quickly checked with the ZIFA player database and the two players were barred from participating.
However, this was not the case with the Bikita Minerals versus Grayham FC match yet there were ZIFA ERSL officials at the match.

Tenax Approach ZIFA, SRC Over D1 Boardroom Decision To Promote Bikita Minerals To PSL

The President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa, has issued a stern warning to business, industry, and the mining sector regarding corruption. During the official commissioning of the Bikita Minerals spodumene and petalite processing plants, Mnangagwa made it clear that his government would not tolerate any form of corruption and would enforce the law without any bias or favouritism.
Mnangagwa stressed that the pursuit of profit should never come at the expense of the country’s laws or the well-being of its people. He emphasised the need for transformative changes in the quality of life for Zimbabweans, which should be achieved through the responsible and ethical utilisation of the country’s abundant resources. He is quoted by <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200020248/ed-warns-businesses-miners-over-corruption">NewsDay Zimbabwe</a> as saying:

Corruption of any kind, will never be condoned by my government and the law will apply without fear or favour.
The overarching need to grow “the bottomline” should never be at the expense of the laws of the country or the well-being of our people who must see transformative changes to their quality of life as a result of our country’s rich and numerous resources.

Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index recently ranked Zimbabwe among the 124 countries with high levels of corruption. Mnangagwa’s administration has faced criticism for not demonstrating sufficient political will to effectively tackle corruption. Critics argue that President Mnangagwa’s government only pays lip service to fighting corruption, as political elites involved in corrupt activities receive protection. They believe that tangible actions and unbiased enforcement of the law are needed to effectively combat corruption in Zimbabwe.
In addition to addressing corruption, Mnangagwa highlighted the importance of the lithium sub-sector in Zimbabwe’s economy. He acknowledged the investment of US$300 million from Sinomine Resource Group into the Bikita Minerals project. Mnangagwa urged players in the lithium sub-sector to remain focused on producing batteries and other clean energy-related products. He also emphasised the need to expedite the completion of the Mapinga Mines to Energy Industrial Park.
Zimbabwe currently suffers losses of at least US$1.7 billion due to the export of unprocessed lithium ore mined at various mines including Sandawana in Mberengwa, Bikita, and Arcadia Lithium Mine. To tap into the full potential of the lithium industry, the country needs to develop a comprehensive lithium-ion battery and electric vehicle industry.

President Mnangagwa Warns Business, Industry, And Mining Sector Against Corruption

Bikita Minerals Football Club has been promoted into the Castle Lager Premiership after they were awarded three points from their final match of the ZIFA Eastern Region Division One season against Grayham.
Eastern Region Soccer League vice chairman Simba Wisdom confirmed the latest development. He said, as quoted by <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/just-in-eastern-region-d1-promotes-bikita-minerals/">The Manica Post</a>:
<blockquote>
We deliberated on the matter between Bikita Minerals and Grayham on Saturday here in Mutare.
As the outcome of the deliberations, we discovered that, indeed, Grayham used an ineligible player.
The player in question is Calvin Tinashe Chiwere who was using Munyaradzi Machipisa’s license.
He is a 32-year-old player who was using a 22-year-old player’s license. There was overwhelming evidence.
Therefore, according to Rule 13.1 Paragraph B, if a player uses an ineligible player’s licence and the issue is raised during inspection the team using the ineligible player gets three points docked from them, a fine is imposed while the opponents get maximum points. This is the reason we gave Bikita Minerals three points.
Technically, Bikita Minerals now have 60 points and Tenax have 59. Bikita Minerals are the 2023 ZIFA Eastern Region Division One champions.
We have also suspended Chiwere for six months. In the same hearing, Bikita Minerals was fined US$2 000 for assaulting referees.
Like I said earlier on, Grayham have three points docked. The match is given to Bikita Minerals on a three-nil scoreline. Grayham was also given a US$1 000 fine.

Bikita Minerals now join Arenel, Chegutu Pirates, and TelOne from the country’s second-tier leagues to complete the list of promoted teams for the 2024 Castle Lager Premiership season.
Black Rhinos, Sheasham, Triangle United and Cranborne Bullets are the four clubs that were relegated from the Premier Soccer League.

Bikita Minerals Promoted To The Premier Soccer League

Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Zhou Ding, stated that Zimbabwe currently lacks the capacity to produce battery-grade lithium, despite possessing significant lithium reserves. Zimbabwe holds some of the world’s largest deposits of hard rock lithium, a crucial mineral for clean energy technologies.
Speaking during a breakfast meeting in Harare, Ambassador Zhou Ding highlighted the challenges faced by Zimbabwe, which hinder its ability to fully capitalize on the benefits of the lithium sector. <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200017973/zim-not-yet-ready-to-develop-lithium-batteries">NewsDay</a> quotes him as saying:

China fully supports the Zimbabwean government’s vision for value addition and low-carbon development through the expansion of the mining industry, particularly in the lithium sector. However, Rome was not built in a day.
Zimbabwe may face some challenges in developing battery-grade lithium in the short term. First, some main raw materials, such as sulphuric acid  for making battery-grade lithium is dependent on imports with high costs. 
Lithium processing is highly energy-intensive, insufficient power supply and high electricity price constrained the production of battery-grade lithium. Third, in the long term, Zimbabwe’s new energy industry may face competition from neighbouring countries, such as South Africa, Zambia. Therefore, further investing in the new energy mining in Zimbabwe needs more in-depth market research and relevant support measures.

Despite Zimbabwe’s possession of significant lithium deposits, the country has primarily focused on mining petalite, a form of lithium used in ceramics, aluminium smelting, and glass production, through Bikita Minerals since the 1950s. However, in recent times, Chinese mining companies such as Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt, Sinomine Resource Group, and Chengxin Lithium Group have made substantial investments totalling $678 million in acquiring lithium mines and projects in Zimbabwe. 
During the event, Suston Muzenda, the chief director of the Transport Ministry, highlighted the challenges faced by the transport industry in Zimbabwe. He emphasized the struggles caused by limited accessibility and high operating costs. Muzenda stated that the government aims to address these issues by promoting e-mobility as a potential solution to the transportation crisis.
Muzenda said the current landscape of the transport sector hinders the competitiveness of local products and poses difficulties for vulnerable communities, both in urban and rural areas. He added:

It is clear that we require a transformative solution and that solution lies in embracing e-mobility — the adoption of electric vehicles and the development of a sustainable transportation ecosystem.

Zhou Ding’s remarks come less than a week after the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Harare_Institute_of_Technology/">Harare Institute of Technology (HIT)</a> in Zimbabwe announced that it had <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/010/07/harare-institute-technology-hit-zimbabwe-makes-progress-in-producing-lithium-batteries/">made significant progress in the production of lithium batteries</a> for passenger vehicles, the state-run <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/zimbabwe-starts-lithium-car-batteries-production/">Chronicle</a> reported. This breakthrough has the potential to accelerate the country’s involvement in clean energy technologies. HIT said it had successfully purified lithium phosphate and manufactured prototype cells, marking a significant step towards commercial production.
The university’s Vice Chancellor, Dr. <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Quinton_Kanhukamwe/">Quinton Kanhukamwe</a>, announced their vision to commence commercial production of lithium batteries for vehicles in 2024 during HIT’s 14th graduation ceremony where President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Emmerson_Mnangagwa/">Emmerson Mnangagwa</a> capped 639 students, with 38.8% of them being female graduates.

Chinese Ambassador Says Zimbabwe Lacks Capacity To Produce Battery-grade Lithium

A Chinese national was arrested recently for allegedly trying to smuggle 30 tonnes of lithium out of the country.
Lu Minghui (45) of Msasa Harare was found in possession of fake documents to facilitate the transportation of the lithium from Bikita Minerals to Mozambique.
He appeared before Marondera magistrate, Esther Mabika, on Thursday last week and was remanded to 16 March on $100 000 bail.
Lu was also ordered to surrender his passport and reside at his given Msasa address.
Allegations are that on 25 February, Lu hired a haulage truck from Anter International Logistics to ferry petalite ore to Beira, Mozambique.
He allegedly gave the transporting company some soft copy documents that showed that the mineral was being ferried from Bikita Minerals.
On 28 February, upon reaching the 71-kilometre peg towards Marondera along the Harare-Mutare Highway, the truck was intercepted by detectives.
The detectives discovered that the truck was transporting petalite concentrate.
Bikita Minerals was then contacted and the company’s officials said they were unaware of the documents. Lu was then arrested.
