The United Nations has called upon sympathisers to assist Zimbabwe evade possible starvation due to drought.
After a tour of Masvingo province recently, UN Resident Coordinator, Bishow Parajuli in a statement said stakeholders involved in aiding Cyclone Idai survivors should also focus on vulnerable drought-stricken communities to save people from starving.
Parajuli said:
<blockquote>
While the response to Cyclone Idai continues, the government, UN, development partners, NGOs and civil society as well as the private sector, must not lose focus in supporting vulnerable drought affected communities with the provision of social services, particularly in meeting the urgently needed critical medical supplies,building and strengthening resilience.
The ongoing concerted drought relief, resilience and community asset building efforts by government, the UN, development partners, NGOs and communities have shown the way on the need to link humanitarian response and development programmes.
There is need to scale up these interventions to ensure communities bounce back better and stronger in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Zimbabwe has been receing unpredicted rainfall patterns in close to two decades resulting in poor harvests. These unpredicted rainfall patterns were characterised by hail storm, floods, little rains, and lately, cyclones.

UN Calls For Help To Evade Projected Starvation In Zimbabwe

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) yesterday challenged government to ensure transparency in distributing aid. The UN board was donating 80 metric tonnes of goods including medicine to Cyclone Idai survivors. UN ambassador to Zimbabwe, Bishow Parajuli said:
<blockquote>We are very humbled as UN system to join the government of Zimbabwe in solidarity in this crisis, where many people lost their lives and we say to members of the families who lost their loved ones, ‘we are your friends and we will help you in these trying times’. We also appeal for more support and we will be happy if the goods reached the intended cyclones victims.</blockquote>
 
Sekai Nzenza,  Public Service Minister assured Parajuli that the donations would benefit survivors. She said:
<blockquote>You have come in at a time when urgent attention is needed on the wellbeing of the affected people. I would like to assure you that the donations will definitely benefit the victims of Cyclone Idai and that we will not tolerate any mishandling of the goods.</blockquote>
The goods were received at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport by Public Service minister Sekai Nzenza, Local Government deputy minister Jennifer Mhlanga and Bishow Parajuli.
Robert Tibagwa, UNHCR country representative in Zimbabwe, indicated that the donation was intended for 10 000 beneficiaries. Another batch is expected soon and is premised at covering about 20 000 refugees living at Tongogara Refugee Camp in Chipinge district.
The challenge for transparency follows last week reports of partisan distribution of aid in Manicaland.

UN Challenges Government To Ensure Transparency In Distributing Handouts

The United Nations (UN) and European Union (EU) on Wednesday said that they had established mechanisms to curb looting and politicisation of aid availed for the victims of Cyclone Idai.
Speaking during a meeting with Manicaland Provincial Affairs minister Ellen Gwaradzimba in Mutare, the EU ambassador to Zimbabwe Timo Olkkonen said:
<blockquote>We take seriously the reports that the food is being distributed politically. The government of Zimbabwe must review that, this must not happen. The government of Zimbabwe must respect the needs of the people.
The distribution of the food must not be distorted in any way and any further violations are destroying the goodwill.</blockquote>
On his part, the UN ambassador to Zimbabwe, Bishow Parajuli said:
<blockquote>We are working on a system that minimises bureaucracy and maximises direct benefit to the affected people. You (Gwaradzimba) are fully aware of places where the food was distributed to who, why and how.
We need to maintain openness in the system on these humanitarian issues and we should continue working together. We have seen that the victims need food and we jumped in.
For the way forward, in order to see the effective distribution of the food, we are going to meet the people affected directly and make coordinated efforts to assist them.
We will have UN colleagues and civil society groups stationed here (Command Centre) for a period of time and work on different modalities and mediums to see an effective and fair distribution of the food.</blockquote>

EU, UN Move To Plug Looting Loopholes Of Cyclone Idai Aid

ZBC News reports that Manicaland Minister of State Dr Ellen Gwaradzimba met EU Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Timo Olkkonen and UN ambassador to Zimbabwe and Resident Coordinator Mr Bishow Parajuli before they departed for Chimanimani to visit Cyclone Idai affected areas.

Gwaradzimba Meets EU's Parajuli & UN's Olkkonen

The United Nations (UN) on Tuesday revealed that the Agency’s Chief, Bishow Parajuli met with Zimbabwean Deputy Chief Secretary to President and Cabinet Mupamhanga, Government Ministries, UN Agencies and donors as well as Non-governmental organisations in Harare.
The meeting was held to prepare for looming food shortages due to the El Nino-induced drought. In a statement released on Twitter, the UN in Zimbabwe said:
<blockquote>Multi-stakeholders consultation underway to effectively respond to a looming humanitarian situation in Zimbabwe. Co-chaired by UN Chief Bishow Parajuli and Deputy Chief Secretary to President and Cabinet Mupamhanga, the meeting brings together Government Ministries, UN Agencies, donors, NGOs.</blockquote>

UN Agencies Meet Govt Officials To Prepare For Looming Famine

Bishow Parajuli, UN Resident Coordinator and Resident Representative for the UN Development Programme (UNDP) in Zimbabwe has called on the international community to support Zimbabwe. Speaking in New York, Parajuli said
<blockquote>
I think the international community should be very open, the UN should be very open, to engage and partner with – and support Zimbabwe – to come out of some of the major crises they have had in the last several years so they can stand on their own.
The Government has been very active in terms of promoting engagement and they have declared themselves as open for business, contrary to the past administration. They are calling for a lot of investors to come in, private sector to come in, which is really fundamental, actually. Aid alone is not enough.</blockquote>
