US-based actress and playwright Danai Gurira has taken the time to speak about her 2020 as she described the year as a tough year.
Gurira spoke about her projects in 2020 and the trajectory they took because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and said:
<blockquote>Creating work has never been easy. Not even in the best of circumstances. We could never have imagined a 2020 as we planned for its programming, but we recalibrated.
Nevertheless, our programming suffered, we did manage to work towards our core vision in the midst of it all.</blockquote>
Danai also spoke about the Almasi project, a Zimbabwean-American drama arts collaborative organization she co-founded and said:
<blockquote>The goal of Almasi Arts has always been to create opportunity for African artists, to provide education and access.
Being both American and Zimbabwean, it was always vitally important to me to facilitate this relationship between artists across the globe, for the world to get a little smaller, a little less divided.</blockquote>
She also spoke about the highs of her other project OPC and said:
<blockquote>Our work with Ojai Playwrights Conference (OPC) continued in spite of the pandemic preventing travel. Zimbabwean teenagers engaged with American teenagers in the youth writing programme OPC provides,
In January, we were able to conduct our annual Almasi African Playwrights’ Conference and brought dramaturge Sasha Emerson from the United States to Harare to serve as this year’s facilitator; yet another connection made with OPC.

Finally, Danai spoke about her work in general and what she has learnt over the years and said:
<blockquote>What I learnt after the astounding response to Marvel’s Black Panther, as a cast member, was that the world is more than ready for narratives from an African perspective.
Everytime I am back in Zimbabwe, I meet artists ready to take off and tell powerful untold stories in unexpected ways. Join me in making sure these stories are heard and experienced by the world.</blockquote>

Danai Gurira Talks Current Projects, 2020's Highs and Lows

United States-based Zimbabwean actress and Black Panther star, Danai Gurira has mourned her colleague the late Chadwick Boseman who recently succumbed to cancer.
At the end of her eulogy, Gurira said, “Lala Ngoxolo” which means rest in peace or sleep in peace in Xhosa, one of the eleven official languages spoken in South Africa. Xhosa is also Wakanda’s official language.  Below is Gurura’s eulogy.
<blockquote>How do you honor a king? Reeling from the loss of my colleague, my friend, my brother. Struggling for words. Nothing feels adequate. I always marveled at how special Chadwick was. Such a pure hearted, profoundly generous, regal, fun guy. My entire job as Okoye was to respect and protect a king. Honor his leadership. Chadwick made that job profoundly easy. He was the epitome of kindness, elegance, diligence and grace. On many an occasion I would think how thankful I was that he was the leading man I was working closely with. A true class act. And so perfectly equipped to take on the responsibility of leading the franchise that changed everything for Black representation.
He made everyone feel loved, heard and seen. He played great, iconic roles because he possessed inside of himself that connection to greatness to be able to so richly bring them to life. He had a heroic spirit, and marched to the beat of his own drum; hence his excellence as an artist and the incredible courage and determination as he faced life’s challenges; while still guiding us all.
He was zen and sweet and funny (with the very best laugh), attentive, and truly, truly, good. I can’t even wrap my mind around this loss. A loss resonating in my own heart as well as around the globe. The children he inspired, my heart aches for them, to lose their hero just as they finally found him. I am so thankful to have taken the Black Panther journey with him. To have known him, spent time in his light and leadership and to call him forever a friend.

"Lala Ngoxolo" - Black Panther Star Danai Gurira Mourns Chadwick

Zimbabwean born American based actress Danai Gurira has revealed that she left her role in the walking dead so as to concentrate on her writing, Sunday News reports.
Speaking about why she left, the Black Panther actor said:
<blockquote>It was incredibly hard to even imagine leaving. I loved that show. I loved the family that I had there, and that I always have. The beauty of coming to work and loving the people you’re around and the work that you’re doing and the things you get to do and call it your job, is like nothing I could have imagined,
But there are aspects of my work as a writer, and I needed to allow it to have space. To really let it have its space in my life and in my artistic pursuits as well.
It’s always hard to accept that it’s time to allow yourself to go in another direction. And it was incredibly hard to come to that place, but I had to. I had to start articulating it to myself and then to others, and it took a while to do that, because it was my home.</blockquote>
Danai left the series this past season and it sparked rumours that she left The Walking Dead because of her growing profile after she starred in avengers movies.

Danai Gurira Reveals Why She Left The Walking Dead

The Zimbabwean Hollywood based actor, Danai Gurira, has won an Outstanding Supporting Actress award for her role in Black Panther at the 50th NAACP Image Awards. The winners were announced on the 30th of March during the live broadcast on TV One from The Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

In an interview with CNet, famous Zimbabwean Hollywood actress Danai Gurira, speaks about her role in the blockbuster Black Panther and the popular ABC series Walking Dead.

<blockquote>Love our Girls is a nonprofit, but it doesn’t function as a nonprofit. It functions as an informational hub. You become aware of organizations and all the good work they’re doing, you want to support them, and you might find your activist soft spot. We’re dealing with causes from child brides to equal pay, HIV and mothers, recovering from sexual assault and the #MeToo movement. There’s so many different components to the struggles and the ways that women are pushing forward.
I was born in the United States, lived here until I was 5 and then I was raised in Zimbabwe, so I’ve had this duality of cultural experience. That made me really want to see more people with talent get opportunities in their art form.
It’s trickier there to get educated in your field, to get access to opportunities. So it’s really about lessening the disparity between ability and access. We have fellowships. We bring Zimbabweans here doing degrees in the dramatic arts right now. We take Americans to Zimbabwe — they teach, they mentor. We have connections with American institutions. It’s about collaboration, because I do believe that Americans can learn a lot from Zimbabweans as well as Zimbabweans from Americans. Once people from different cultures collaborate and find artistic connections, beautiful things always happen.</blockquote>
