The NBSZ has suspended blood coupons which were being used by public hospitals to buy blood on credit, Health Times reports.
This came to light in the memo from the NBSZ finance team which said they were having financial challenges securing the sundries needed to collect blood as they were facing foreign currency challenges due to inflation.

SUBJECT: SUSPENSION OF BLOOD COUPONS FACILITY 
This memo serves to advise you that NBSZ has taken a position to stop accepting blood coupons from Governrnent Health Institutions with effect from 7 July 2020. All Hospitals are now required to pay for products and services in advance until further notice. Credit faciliry can only be extended to a hospital after completion and approval of the credit application form.
The cost of critical raw materials and consumables required for collection and processing of blood components has continued to escalate as a result of the current inflationary environment. In order to maintain the quality of our products and adequacy, it has become necessary to suspend the blood coupons facility Linni payment modalities has been agreed upon between NBSZ and Ministry of Health and Child Care.
In fine with is oversight role the 50050 Board reviewed the financial position of the Service and resolved that the Blood user fees for public institutions, medical aids and other health finders shall be paid strictly in United States Dollars (USD). or at an exchange rate equivalent to the Old Mutual Implied Rate or other comparable exchange rate with immediate effect.
Taking cognisance of the prevailing market rate. the revised fees and services apply to both public and private institutions and medical aids are attached to this memo for ease of reference and may be reviewed on short notice.

National Blood Services Of Zimbabwe Suspends Blood Coupons, Blood Likely To Be Sold To Public Hospitals In USD

NBSZ has hiked the price of blood for private patients to over $10 000 per single unit of blood, with effect from 15 June 2020, Newsday reports. However, blood will remain free for public hospital patients.
This was revealed by NBSZ Spokesperson Esther Massundah who said:
<blockquote>As a result of the current inflationary environment, NBSZ is procuring these products from the local market at a premium which is over 240% as compared to the current interbank exchange rate. Therefore, it has become necessary to adjust the cost of blood components in order to be sustainable and maintain quality of products.</blockquote>
However, blood remains in short supply countrywide for both private and public patients as the blood bank is still inadequately stocked due to COVID-19 induced challenges.

NBSZ In A 450+% Blood Price Hike

Zimbabwe’s blood bank is running dangerously, the NBSZ has announced they have stock that will last less than 5 days, Health Times reports.
This was revealed by NBSZ Public Affairs manager Ms Esther Massundah at a press conference today. Massundah told journalists that:
<blockquote>We are currently running low in terms of our blood stocks. We have got blood stocks that are below the five days, which is the standard requirement of the blood bank to at least have a five days worth of stock.
So we are currently running low, if we are running low, we are running stocks of below five days which means we are running stocks of about three days and less and our stocks are running below the five days. Our blood bank is running below capacity.</blockquote>
NBSZ earlier this week said the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/06/01/blood-shortage-hits-zimbabwe-report/">blood shortage</a> was being caused by the pandemic which has delayed and or hindered them from acquiring consumables to be used to collect blood from donors.

The Country's Blood Bank Running Dangerously Low

A shortage of blood crisis has hit Zimbabwe as NBSZ says blood supplies have reduced during the lockdown period due to shortage of consumables to be used to collect blood from donors, Health Times reports.
The development was revealed by Blood Bank’s Public Affairs Manager, Ms Esther Massundah who said:
<blockquote>Most of the critical items that are used to produce a safe unit of blood are imported and these challenges have not only impacted negatively on Zimbabwe but also other blood services in Africa. We are expecting arrival of part of these critical supplies by Friday 05 June 2020, which will lead us to work all weekend in order for normal services to resume by Monday 8 June 2020.
Our Laboratories will remain operational throughout the weekend to clear any testing backlog and nsure that there is some normalcy on the supply of blood to the hospitals. These above said challenges have resulted in NBSZ reducing its planned blood collection schedules and calling of blood donors to our static clinics.</blockquote>
The NBZS also said it wishes to inform the public that the blood shortage was not due to a shortage of donors and hoped the situation will normalise soon.
