The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education will open the electronic enrollment process for Form One pupils seeking placements in boarding schools on Friday, November 1.
This enrollment system, managed through the Electronic Ministry Application Platform (EMAP), will remain open until December 31, 2024.
In a circular signed by the Ministry’s Secretary, Moses Mhike, and addressed to Provincial Education Directors, Responsible Authorities, District Schools Inspectors, Church Education Secretaries, CHIZ, and all school heads, it was stated that the application platform will go live on November 1. Each applicant will have the opportunity to apply to a maximum of five schools.
Once a placement is offered by one school, applicants will no longer be eligible to apply to or be considered by other schools unless they decline the initial offer. Reads the circular in part:

The electronic platform for enrolling Form One (1) boarding places for 2025. Parents/guardians who wish to send their children to boarding schools are advised to start applying through the platform (www.emap.co.zw) with effect from 1 November up to 31 December 2024.
Each applicant will be allowed to make a maximum of 5 active applications at any given time.
An applicant who has been offered a place at one school will not be eligible to apply or be considered for a place at any other school unless the offer is declined.
Successful applicants will be notified through short message service (sms) by the respective School Heads.
Parents/guardians are, however, advised that there are limited boarding places and should therefore have alternative arrangements to avoid challenges if a boarding place is not secured.

Once an application is submitted to a school, it may display one of the following statuses:
<ul>
<li>Pending: This indicates that the application is still under consideration.</li>
<li>Accepted: This means the applicant has been offered a place at the school.</li>
<li>Processed: This status is assigned when a particular school accepts an application; all other outstanding applications will automatically change to “Processed.”</li>
<li>Rejected: This indicates that the application was unsuccessful.</li>
</ul>
Mhike added that if an applicant declines an offer, there is no guarantee that the same offer will be available again, as the system independently selects successful candidates.

Form One Boarding School Online Enrollment Starts November 1

There are only 25 000 Form One boarding school places available for the 2024 academic year, a senior government official has said.
This year, about 393 000 candidates sat the Grade Seven Zimbabwe School Examination Council (ZIMSEC), with most of them expected to proceed to Form One next year.
The ZIMSEC Grade 7 results are set to be released on Friday, 01 December.
An average 100 000 learners apply for Form One places at both public and private boarding schools annually through the Electronic Ministry Application Platform (EMAP).
EMAP is an online system that allows parents and guardians to apply for Form One boarding school places for their children.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/only-25-000-form-one-boarding-school-places-available">The Sunday Mail</a>, Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education communications and advocacy director, Taungana Ndoro, said the portal, which opened on 01 November will close on 15 January 2024. Said Ndoro:

All applications will be done through the EMAP system; in the past, there have been challenges, with the system becoming too busy in the last days, resulting in most parents having challenges accessing the network.
This time, we have been working round the clock to ensure everything runs smoothly.
However, applications need to be done as early as possible to save ourselves the last-minute rush and challenges.
We have around 25 000 boarding places available for Form Ones for January 2024.
However, we have not yet established how many learners have registered on the platform so far.

The Government has already set 09 January 2024, as the opening day for Form One classes at public boarding schools.
Ndoro said direct enrolment at schools will not be permitted, adding that parents should make up their minds regarding the applications as the system is not programmed to make changes. He said:
<blockquote>
EMAP eliminates any room for corruption; the system was crafted to protect parents because they were being ripped off by corrupt school authorities.
Parents, guardians and learners are also warned that they should be sure of the choices they make the first time because there will be no room for them to make changes later.
Parents love the transparency the system provides, but let me hasten to warn that the system is not editable.
Once you enter your (school) preferences, you cannot then come back tomorrow and say I want to make changes to my choice of schools.

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has set 09 January 2024 as the opening day for Form One classes at public boarding schools.
In a circular seen by <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/new-form-one-classes-to-begin-january-9-2024">The Sunday Mail</a>, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Moses Mhike, said all heads of boarding schools are expected to abide by the enrolment policy of all boarders seeking Form One placement. He said:
<blockquote>
As the ministry strives to remain committed to the provision of quality, affordable, accessible, inclusive and wholesome education for all Zimbabweans, no boarding school is allowed to administer Form One entrance tests.
Due to limited boarding spaces in schools, those pupils who will not be successful on the boarding placement are expected to access education in day secondary schools.
</blockquote>
Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education spokesperson Taungana Ndoro said that all learners who wish to enroll at the boarding schools are to register on the ministry’s electronic platform from November 1 to January 15, 2024.
Successful applicants will be notified through text messages by the respective school heads when the 2023 Grade Seven public examination results are released.

Form One Classes At Public Boarding Schools To Begin On 09 January, 2024

The novel coronavirus has hit three boarding schools in Mashonaland East province, with 80 learners and teachers testing positive last week.
According to a Health ministry situational report (sitrep) dated 20 January 2023, the schools, which are all in Murehwa District, are Murehwa High, Nhowe Mission and Hurungwe Primary.
Health officials say the confirmed cases have been isolated while surveillance tests have been intensified.
The report also reveals that efforts to reach out to other parts of the district were being hampered by transport challenges.
According to the report, as of Saturday, at least 40 learners at Murehwa High School were in isolation while 32 cases were recorded at Nhowe Mission with three cases being reported at Hurungwe Primary School.
At Hurungwe Primary School, two female teachers tested positive for the virus. Part of the report says:

No admission of cases in isolation and no death has been reported.

Mashonaland East provincial medical director (PMD) Paul Matsvimbo on Sunday confirmed the cases to NewsDay, saying the situation was under control. He said:

I confirm that there are COVID-19 cases and Nhowe Mission and Murewa High School. As for Hurungwe, I will check on the latest developments.
The boarding schools have already implemented public health safety measures, that is isolating those who tested positive among other measures.
The situation is under control and all those who tested positive are stable and doing well. Our health officers are on the ground monitoring the situation.

New COVID-19 Cases Recorded At 3 Boarding Schools

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has exhorted parents and guardians to pay school fees for their children.
The Ministry’s director of communication and advocacy Taungana Ndoro said schools should not send away day scholars for non-payment of fees but make payment plans with their parents and guardians.
Ndoro, however, reminded parents that boarding schools are a luxury and they cannot take their children to school without paying fees. He said:
<blockquote>
For day scholars, we do not expect any school to send away learners for non-payment of fees, but schools should allow parents to make payment plans.
But we also expect cooperation from the parents. When they have made a plan, they should honour it and make payments.
However, parents should understand that boarding school is a luxury and they cannot take their children to school without paying school fees.
Boarding schools need the money to be able to provide food and other basic amenities for the learners.
So we want to encourage parents to pay school fees or at least come to an agreement with the school on a payment plan, which they should also pay so that schools can continue to operate and take care of learners.

Meanwhile, the Government has reintroduced a five-day learning week for all learners, thereby moving away from an arrangement in which learners in some schools attended classes at least three days per week.

Govt Urges Parents To Pay School Fees For Their Children

The government has ordered all borders to remain at school over the Independence weekend in order to minimise social contact and reduce the risk of the spread of the coronavirus.
Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said after Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting:
<blockquote>In order to protect learners during the forthcoming holiday and avoid the Covid-19 infection spike as happened over the Christmas and New Year holidays, Cabinet has directed that all learners at boarding schools remain at their schools during the Independence holiday in order to avoid travel congestion and minimise chances of contracting the virus.
All school heads, without exception, are required to observe this directive, which is in the national interest.</blockquote>

The same restrictions applied to learners who had travelled to urban or rural areas but are not boarders.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/04/10/errant-school-authorities-blamed-for-surge-in-coronavirus-cases/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">has blamed “errant” school authorities for the recent outbreaks of COVID-19 at some boarding schools,</a> among them Sacred Hearts Girls High School in Matabeleland South province.
The schools were accused of ignoring a government directive not to allow boarding pupils to travel home for the Easter holidays.
Ministry of Education spokesperson Taungana Ndoro said the infected pupils got the coronavirus from outside and brought it to the schools.

Boarding Pupils Barred From Travelling Home During Independence Holiday

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said that all boarding schools used as quarantine centres have been disinfected and are safe to readmit pupils.
Mutsvangwa said this while responding to Harare Senator Omega Hungwe (ZANU PF) who had asked if boarding schools that were used as quarantine centres were safe for learners during the Question and Answer session in Senate on Thursday. Said Mutsvangwa:
<blockquote>All the schools were disinfected because as Government we are equally concerned with the safety of children.
To that end, the Government has mobilised $600 million for the procurement of personal protective equipment for pupils ahead of the opening of schools.
The lives of our pupils are very important and no one should be exposed to the disease hence we took those measures.</blockquote>
The government announced recently that schools will reopen for Grade Sevens, Forms Four and Six on September 28 ahead of public examinations which are scheduled to commence on December 1.
