The bodies of two fishermen who drowned after their dinghy capsized in Lake Kariba on Friday have been recovered.
Three other fishermen who were on the same dinghy were rescued by anglers participating in the Kariba International Tiger Fish Tournament 2024.
The recovery of the bodies was carried out by members of the police sub-aqua unit, with assistance from the local community, near Antelope Islands. The bodies have since been taken to Kariba Hospital for postmortem examinations.
Kariba Residents Trust (KART) spokesperson Marshal Mushore confirmed the development. He said (via <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200033296/2-fishermens-bodies-recovered-in-lake-kariba">NewsDay</a>):

Over the years, several tragic boat accidents on Lake Kariba have claimed lives. In one such incident that occurred in October of last year, three people lost their lives when a motorized boat capsized near Tsetse Island.

A makeshift ferry boat capsized off Mozambique’s northern coast killing 94 people, including children.
Writing for <a href="https://www.sasktoday.ca/world-news/mozambique-ferry-accident-leaves-more-than-90-people-dead-including-children-local-media-say-8566299">The Associated Press</a>, Farai Mutsaka, reported that Silvério Nauaito, the administrator of the Island of Mozambique, told state-run Radio Mozambique as saying the ferry sank Sunday afternoon.
The initial death toll of 91 rose to 94 after they recovered three more bodies early Monday.
Nauaito said that there were 130 people on the ferry and “94 have lost their lives and about 11 people have been hospitalized.” He said:

According to TV Diário Nampula, a local online outlet, an overcrowded boat operating between Lunga in the Nampula province and the Island of Mozambique tragically led to the drowning of many passengers, including children.
Some of the victims were reportedly travelling to attend a fair, while others were attempting to escape from Lunga to the Island of Mozambique due to fears of cholera contamination, which has recently affected the region.
Additional news reports quoted Jaime Neto, the Secretary of State in Nampula province, who explained that misinformation about an alleged cholera outbreak caused panic. Consequently, people boarded the boat—originally a fishing vessel—to flee the area.
Mozambique’s geography presents challenges. Many areas are accessible only by boats, which are frequently overcrowded. The country’s road network is inadequate, and some regions remain unreachable by land or air.

At Least 94 Dead In Mozambique After Unlicensed Boat Capsizes

Two men and a woman are missing after a canoe boat they were on overturned on Lake Kariba on Friday.
In a post on X, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said that the incident occurred at Nyaodza Point near Lake Harvest cages. Police said:

The ZRP is investigating a drowning incident that occurred on 20/10/23 at Nyaodza Point near Lake Harvest cages, Lake Kariba where a canoe boat with four occupants capsized.
One person escaped while three others, two men and a woman, are missing.

In an unrelated incident, the ZRP said that four people were killed when a mine shaft they were working in collapsed at Murereka also on Friday. Police said:

The ZRP confirms a mine incident that occurred at Kangela Mine, D Troop area, Chikuti, Murereka on 20/10/23 in which four people were killed when a mine shaft they were working in collapsed.
The bodies were retrieved from the shaft by villagers and were taken to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.

Three People Missing After Boat Capsizes On Lake Kariba

Eleven (11) Zimbabwean border jumpers are feared to have drowned in separate incidents attempting to cross the Limpopo River into South Africa.
A boat carrying eight (8) Zimbabweans who were attempting to cross the crocodile-infested Limpopo River into South Africa reportedly capsized near Gate 7 east of the border post on Sunday.
The other three were reportedly swept away in different incidents also on Sunday.
Beitbridge Police District Chief Superintendent Tichaona Nyongo confirmed to News24 that only one body had been recovered so far. Said Nyongo:

So far a body has been recovered, but has yet to be identified. Two more bodies are in the river, but on the SA side and to retrieve them, there’s [the] need [for the] services of a helicopter because the water current is strong.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP)’s Aub-Aqua Unit had been trying to get the bodies since Sunday when they were reported to authorities, without success.
Superintendent Nyongo said they had informed the South African Police Services (SAPS) who were expected to dispatch a helicopter to the area.
News24 reported sources in Beitbridge as saying that the eight believed to have drowned were seen in an inflated boat near Dite Village, 40 kilometres east and downstream from the bridge.
However, Superintendent Nyongo said ZRP had not received the report about the boat.

11 Zimbabwean Border Jumpers Drown In Limpopo River

The body of a Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) officer who went missing following a boat accident on Lake Kariba last Friday has been retrieved.
The remains of the soldier, Tafadzwa Mashingaidze, were retrieved on Wednesday and two of the people who were in the boat when it capsized remain unaccounted for. Mashingaidze’s body was found floating on the lake.
An eyewitness who is part of the rescue mission, Chenjerai Zambezi, told H-Metro that Mashingaidze’s body was found around 7 am. He said:
His body was found around 7 am floating from where others were rescued. The lake is now calmer than yesterday. I hope we are going to find the other two bodies left.
Mashingaidze’s aunt Elizabeth Chengeta told H-Metro that the body has been identified and they will be on their way to Chinhoyi. She said:

If all goes well, we will be in Chinhoyi today. However, there is going to be a church service at home. He is going to be buried in Mudzimu, Hurungwe.

A fisherman who refused to be identified told the publication that small boats were being used as a form of transport by fishermen, buyers and traders to and from the fishing camps.

A Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) fitness instructor, Tafadzwa Mashingaidze, has been identified as one of the five people who drowned when a boat they were sailing in capsized on Lake Kariba on Friday morning.
The incident occurred around 4 am when the vessel hit turbulent waters, stirred by strong winds, near Ndomo fishing camp.
Mashingaidze was reportedly in the company of his two unidentified ZNA workmates, and five others when tragedy struck at dawn.

The police subaqua unit, ZNA Boat Squadron, with the help of locals, on Friday, managed to retrieve the body of a woman believed to be a fish dealer.
Speaking to NewZimbabwe.com, the boat’s coxswain, Clever Muvengwa, revealed that the mishap occurred when the boat was hit by a heavy water current. He said:
<blockquote>We were eight of us on the boat. Tragedy struck when a high wave hit us and water started flooding the boat which immediately went underwater.
I and two of the soldiers held onto life jackets which is why we survived. Tafadzwa (Mashingaidze) and a local woman whom l only know as Fay, as well as Noah Mwindo who was holding his child and another male adult, all drowned.</blockquote>
According to reports, divers reached depths of over 30 metres, without a trace of the four missing persons.
The search for the missing four bodies is still in progress and neither the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) nor the ZNA has given details about the accident.
