Uganda’s main opposition figure, Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has welcomed the imposition of sanctions on certain Ugandan officials by the United States in the aftermath of disputed elections in the East African country.
On Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced visa restrictions on Ugandan officials who are believed to have undermined the democratic process in the country.
The statement by Blinken did not name the officials targeted for travel bans but it is believed nearly a dozen senior military and police officers are among those likely to be sanctioned over violent abuse of citizens’ human rights.
In his statement this Monday, Bobi Wine said he hoped other countries will follow the U.S. in sanctioning the alleged human rights violators in support of the Ugandan people’s quest for freedom. The statement read:
<blockquote>The people of Uganda appreciate U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s announcement of visa restrictions on Ugandan officials who interfered with the recent elections.
The statement by the United States is an important recognition that the recent elections were neither free nor fair.
It sends an unequivocal message that although Gen. Museveni boasts of controlling all Ugandan institutions that would call him to account, the world is watching and is beginning to act.
The victims of the worst human rights violations which we have witnessed, including families of hundreds of Ugandans murdered on Gen. Museveni’s orders; thousands of victims of abductions and torture, as well as those who are still under illegal detention, have received this news with gratitude.
The people of Uganda value their relationship with the global community and appreciate the concern shown by the United States on the deteriorating situation regarding human rights and civil liberties.
It is our hope that other nations of the world will follow suit and support the people of Uganda in our quest for freedom and democracy.</blockquote>

Bobi Wine Welcomes U.S. Sanctions On Ugandan Officials

Reports coming from Uganda are stating that 200 opposition members were abducted in the last 3 days and taken to unknown locations. This came after the country’s tense elections in January that saw Yoweri Museveni retaining his post as the country’s president and immediately placing the leading opposition member Bobi Wine under house arrests for reasons unknown.
The country’s opposition leader Bobi Wine revealed that party members are being abducted all over the country and he said in the last 3 days, 200 opposition party members were abducted.

<blockquote>The kidnaps have intensified. Over 200 supporters picked up in 3 days! The latest victim is Nhetto, a young supporter for long. Picked up at Acacia as he went about his business. On 15 February 2021, <a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/world/articles/2021-02-15/allegations-of-abductions-grip-uganda-after-tense-elections">US News published an article</a> that stated that Bobi Wine has stated that suspected state agents have kidnapped 243 people after the tense elections. In January Bobi wine said over 3000 of his followers were detained before the January 14 elections.
Museveni has been the country’s President since he toppled the country’s leader in 1986 and has been elected Uganda’s President 6 times since then.

Museveni Allegedly Abducts 200 Opposition Members In 3 Days - Report

Uganda High Court has ordered security officers to withdraw from Bobi Wine’s house, Aljazeera reports. Lawyer George Musisi, spoke to the publication said the High Court ordered the troops to withdraw from Bobi Wine’s house with immediate effect:
<blockquote>The judge ordered that the state and its agencies should immediately vacate his property and his right to personal liberty should immediately be reinstated.</blockquote>
Ugandan Army which virtually places Bobi Wine under house arrest since 14 January is said to be aware of the court order and it will reportedly comply even though barricades were still seen at the residence of the main opposition leader this morning.
Bobi Wine rejected the outcome of the Uganda elections and was expected to announce a way forward by his party supporters when he was placed under house arrest. Local CSO, The Americans, Amnesty International were already urging the Ugandan forces to stop harassing the youthful leader.

Uganda High Court Orders Security Officers To Withdraw From Bobi Wine's House

According to East Africa Journalist Samira Sawlani, The US Embassy in Kampala said the US Ambassador to Uganda Natalie Brown tried to visit Bobi Wine whose house is surrounded by Uganda state agents but she was blocked by the armed forces guarding the youthful politician’s house.
Sawlani published part of a statement for the embassy that stated that:
<blockquote>U.S. Ambassador to Uganda Natalie E. Brown attempted to visit presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi at his residence on January 18, but was denied access by Ugandan security forces.
The United States regularly meets with actors across Uganda’s political spectrum as part of its diplomatic engagement. The purpose of Ambassador Brown’s visit was to check on (Bobi Wine) Mr. Kyagulanyi’s health and safety, given that he’s effectively been unable to leave his home, with security forces surrounding his residence.
Uganda’s election campaigns were marred by the harassment of opposition candidates, campaign staff, and supporters; suppression of the media and civil society organization activities; and a nationwide internet shutdown before, during, and after voting day. These unlawful actions and the effective house arrest of a presidential candidate continue a worrying trend on the course of Uganda’s democracy.
We call on the Ugandan government to respect their citizens’ human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and freedom of the press as provided for in Uganda’s own constitution and according to commitments Uganda has made to uphold international human rights standards.
Nobody should be unlawfully denied a means to communicate and the freedom to leave their home, should they choose to do so.</blockquote>
Bobi Wine yesterday tweeted that he has been under <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/01/18/bobi-wines-house-still-surrounded-by-armed-forces/">house arrest for 4 days and he is running out of food supplies</a> and when his wife attempted to pick something from the garden at their home she was assaulted by the soldiers. Bobi wine has said he has video evidence of election rigging in some parts of Uganda.
Internet, which was shut down before Thursday’s election was restored in Uganda but social media was still blocked yesterday.

Ugandan Authorities Deny US Ambassador Access To Bobi Wine

Uganda’s opposition leader Bobi Wine (real name Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu) has said the Ugandan authorities are still surrounding his house 4 days since they camped outside the firebrand politician’s house.
Using his official Twitter Account Wine said the soldiers guarding his house even assaulted his wife when she tried to get food from the garden. Wine said they have been under house arrest for 4 days and they are running out of food supplies:

Bobi Wine even said the state agents badly assaulted one of his team members to the point that he had to be hospitalized:

Wine has said he has video footage of election rigging in some parts of Uganda and <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/01/15/uganda-election-bobi-wine-declares-himself-president-elect/">he is adamant he won the election</a> even though the Uganda Election Commission declared Yoweri Museveni the winner. Meanwhile, the EU and the UK government have declared the elections relatively calm despite the turbulent campaign Bobi Wine went through.

Uganda’s President for the past 34 years Yoweri Museveni has defeated firebrand youthful politician Bobi Wine to become the country’s president for the next 5 years, Aljazeera reports.
According to the publication, Uganda’s election commission declared Museveni the duly elected winner today and said he garnered 5.85 million votes, or 58.64%, while Bobi Wine won 3.48 million votes or 34.83%
Uganda Election Commission EC chairman Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama. in announcing Museveni as the winner reportedly said:
<blockquote>The electoral commission declares Yoweri Museveni … elected president of the republic of Uganda</blockquote>
Bobi wine yesterday said he was the elected president at a press conference he said he had video evidence of the government rigging elections.
Meanwhile, the EU in Uganda has said it was impressed with the peaceful and organized elections despite reports on social media that armed state agents surrounded Bobi Wine’s house yesterday. The country voted on Thursday amid an internet and social media blockade ordered by Museveni’s government.

Museveni Declared Uganda's Next President

The European Union has said it was impressed by the manner in which polls were conducted in Uganda, on Thursday, Nation reports.
According to the East African paper. the Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation in Uganda, Ambassador Atillio Pacifici, said the EU was impressed by the peaceful and organizational conduct that was exuded by the East African nation during the elections.
Pacifici reportedly said:
<blockquote>We saw an extremely well-organised election exercise with people very orderly waiting to cast their votes and everything went on very peacefully. We are very impressed…the (Electoral Commission) presiding officers were very professional,
It is very impressive that there are so many young, well-educated Ugandans [involved in the electoral process]</blockquote>
The EU reportedly divided their 63 member team into 17 groups and deployed them countrywide to informally observe the elections. The country’s President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is leading the polls while his bitter rival Bobi Wine has not yet polled half of the votes garnered by Museveni so far.
Bobi wine <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/01/15/uganda-election-bobi-wine-declares-himself-president-elect/">has already rejected the preliminary election results</a> and said he has proof in the form of videos of massive vote-rigging in some parts of Uganda. EU Impressed With Uganda Polls

Ugandan opposition candidate, Bobi Wine, has rejected the results declared so far and calls himself the president-elect, despite the electoral body saying some votes are yet to be counted.
Bobi Wine alleges Thursday’s polls saw the worst vote-rigging in Uganda’s history but did not provide any evidence to back up his claims.
Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, says he’ll address the press again in a few hours on the way forward and has declared “the struggle is just beginning.”
Early results from the electoral commission give the incumbent, President Yoweri Museveni, a commanding lead of almost two-thirds of the votes so far counted.
The military last night surrounded the youthful leader’s house.
Bobi Wine has told reporters that he believes <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/01/13/uganda-directs-isps-to-totally-switch-off-internet/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">the internet and social media shutdown</a> is being used to block communication and to manipulate the election results.
The opposition presidential candidate has already alleged there was rigging and his agents and representatives have continued to be arrested.
But the chairman of the electoral commission, Simon Byabakama, has said that the onus is on Bobi Wine to provide evidence that there was rigging.
He said all candidates had agents who witnessed vote counting at district tally centres.
Only two polling stations in the country reported major irregularities and voting was cancelled there. At one of the polling stations, someone ran away with a ballot box.

UGANDA ELECTION: Bobi Wine Declares Himself President-Elect

Early election results in Uganda are showing that the country’s president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is leading by close to two-thirds as he has so far garnered 65% from the votes that have been counted from 8000+ polling stations that have been called in so far, Deutsche Welle reports.
Museveni has reportedly garnered 1 536 205 votes (65.02%), while Bobi Wine has reportedly polled 647 146 votes (27.39%) from 8310 polling stations so far.
Bobi Wine has called for a press conference in which he has said the elections are marred with widespread fraud and said he has filmed proof of fraud during voting:
<blockquote>I am very confident that we defeated the dictator by far. I call upon all Ugandans to reject the blackmail. We have certainly won the election and we’ve won it by far.</blockquote>
Bobi wine had previously taken to Twitter <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/01/15/the-picture-still-looks-good-bobi-wine-tweets/">to say the picture was looking good</a> before his presser in which he denounced the preliminary results that are being published by the country’s Election Commission.
The country’s internet service providers have reportedly shut down the internet again after the government ordered them to do so. Museveni who is a former guerilla commander has been the country’s president for the past 34 years since he took office in 1986.

Museveni Leads In Uganda's Elections

Uganda’s youthful Presidential aspirant Bobi Wine (real name Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu) has tweeted and said even though it is too early to tell the picture from the just-ended elections is looking good. Bobi Wine using his verified Twitter handle tweeted:
<blockquote>Hello Uganda! Despite the wide spread fraud and violence experienced across the country earlier today, the picture still looks good. Thank you Uganda for turning up and voting in record numbers. The challenge now is for Mr. Byabakama and the EC to declare the will of the Pple.</blockquote>
This was after Bobi Wine went through a turbulent campaign characterized by brutality from state agents and even death. He was arrested and some of his team members were arrested and thrown in jail during the campaign season. This prompted the firebrand politician to approach the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/01/11/ugandas-bobi-wine-approaches-icc-over-human-righst-violations/">International Criminal Court</a> asking them to investigate Museveni for human rights abuses.
During the election day, Bobi Wine’s phone and that of his wife were blocked and he could not make a phone call:

United States ambassador to Uganda, Natalie E Brown, has announced that the USA was no longer observing Uganda’s Thursday presidential election.

It is with profound disappointment that I announce U.S. Mission in Uganda’s decision to cancel our diplomatic observation of Uganda’s January 14 elections due to the decision by the Electoral Commission of Uganda to deny more than 75 percent of the U.S. election observer accreditations requested. With only 15 accreditations approved, it is not possible for the United States to meaningfully observe the conduct of Uganda’s elections at polling sites across the country.
Despite multiple requests, the Electoral Commission provided no explanation for its decision, which it communicated mere days before the elections. The purpose of a diplomatic observation of elections is to demonstrate our interest in a free, fair, peaceful, and inclusive electoral process. Diplomatic observers are not participants or advisors in the electoral process. Rather, they informally observe the conduct of elections, following strict standards of impartiality, non-interference, and compliance with local laws. The Government of Uganda has supported such U.S. observer efforts in multiple previous Ugandan elections. This makes the decision now to deny accreditation to all but a small, randomly selected handful of our observers all the more troubling.
As we have stated previously, the United States takes no side in Uganda’s upcoming elections. We support a free, fair, peaceful, and inclusive electoral process. For Uganda’s 2016 elections, the U.S. Mission dispatched 88 diplomatic election observers. For the January 14 election, the U.S. Mission complied with all Electoral Commission accreditation requirements, as we had in previous elections in Uganda, but the vast majority of our requests for 2021 were not approved.
We are further concerned by reports that the Electoral Commission has denied accreditation requests from members of other diplomatic missions and large numbers of Ugandan observers. Numerous civil society organizations planned to observe the elections, but many have not heard back from the Electoral Commission on their accreditation applications. Among those civil society organizations which already had organizational accreditation, the vast majority of their individual observers have not yet – two days ahead of elections – received accreditation badges. Absent the robust participation of observers, particularly Ugandan observers who are answerable to their fellow citizens, Uganda’s elections will lack the accountability, transparency and confidence that observer missions provide. Uganda will also miss the opportunity to benefit from observers’ insights to improve and inform future elections.</blockquote>
This also comes as the UCC has also directed Internet service providers to totally switch off the Internet this Wednesday at 7pm.
Some observers believe the move is meant to block opposition leader, Bobi Wine, from campaigning on social media platforms.
Meanwhile, the incumbent leader, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni intends to extend his reign to at least 40 years.

USA No Longer Observing Uganda Elections

The President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has said he is running for office again this year for the benefit of the general populace. The government of Uganda has given a directive to Internet Service Providers to “totally switch off the internet” at 1900 hours on the 13th of January.
This comes after the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) on Tuesday had <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/01/12/full-text-letter-blocking-social-media-platforms-in-uganda/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">given a directive to the effect that “all social media platforms” be shutdown.</a>
We are reliably informed that some internet service providers are in the process of switching off the internet totally which means a total internet blackout edition, an escalation of the shutting down of social media platforms which happened yesterday.
The development comes ahead of that country’s Thursday presidential election in which Bobi Wine, real name Robert Kyagulanyi, intends to challenge the incumbent president, Yoweri Museveni, 76, who aims to extend his rule to at least 40 years.
Some believe the move is a deliberate attempt to contain Wine who has been using social media platforms to campaign after the government had used violence at his physical campaigns.

The letter from the commission’s executive director, Irene Kaggwa Sewankambo, to internet providers reads:

Uganda has ordered internet service providers to block all social media platforms and messaging apps on Tuesday until further notice.
Reuters reports that the development was revealed in a letter from the country’s communications regulator which followed complaints from users who were unable to access Facebook and WhatsApp, social media platforms.
The platforms were being widely used for campaigning ahead of Thursday’s presidential election in the East African country.
The letter from the commission’s executive director, Irene Kaggwa Sewankambo, to internet providers reads in part:
<blockquote>In exercise of its functions under section 5(1) of the Uganda Communications Act of 2013, Uganda Communications Commission hereby directs you to immediately suspend any access and use, direct or otherwise, of all social media platforms and online messaging applications over your network until further notice.</blockquote>
Reuters reports that the commission’s spokesman Ibrahim Bbossa and government spokesman Ofwono Opondo did not answer calls requesting comment while an aide to Minister of Information, Judith Nabakooba, said she was unable to comment at the moment.
A source in Uganda’s telecom sector said the government had made clear to executives at telecoms companies that the social media ban was in retaliation for Facebook blocking some pro-government accounts.
The U.S. social media giant said on Monday it had taken down a network in Uganda linked to the country’s ministry of information for using fake and duplicate accounts to post ahead of this week’s election.
Reports suggest that platforms being blocked include WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram among others. There are indications that “Telegram may also be blocked.”
This is happening ahead of Thursday elections in which Bobi Wine, real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, intends to challenge the incumbent president, Yoweri Museveni, 76, who aims to extend his rule to at least 40 years.

Uganda Blocks All Social Media Platforms Amid Elections

Facebook has reportedly shut down the accounts of Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni’s officials for manipulation ahead of the country’s presidential elections this week, Aljazeera reports.
IA statement released by Facebook today, (Monday) the social media company said:
<blockquote>Given the impending election in Uganda, we moved quickly to investigate and take down this network. They used fake and duplicate accounts to manage pages, comment on other people’s content, impersonate users, re-share posts in groups to make them appear more popular than they were.</blockquote>
Museveni’s senior press secretary Don Wanyama whose Facebook and Instagram accounts were deleted by Facebook blasted Facebook using Twitter and said:

Shame on the foreign forces that think they can aid and plant a puppet leadership on Uganda by disabling online accounts of [ruling party] NRM supporters. You won’t take away President Kaguta Museveni.
</blockquote>
Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development Frank Tumwebaze ordered Facebook to unblock them immediately:

Various accounts belonging to Museveni’s lieutenants have been blocked but Museveni’s account is still active. This comes after Bobi Wine the country’s firebrand politician has staged a very brave and tough fight in trying to unseat Museveni one more time on Thursday’s general election,
Last week Facebook blocked Donald Trump’s accounts and Twitter permanently suspended him. Meanwhile, Bobi wine has asked the ICC to <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/01/11/ugandas-bobi-wine-approaches-icc-over-human-righst-violations/">investigate Museveni’s human</a> rights abuses.

Facebook Shuts Down Uganda Govt Officials' Accounts For Manipulation

<blockquote>The MDC Alliance condemns the recent state-sponsored violence in Uganda. The violence resulted in the arbitrary arrest of opposition figures including National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate, Mr Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu popularly known as “Bobi Wine”. The violent arrests were effected under the pretext of enforcing COVID 19 rules. However, the disproportionate use of force by the security forces resulted in the death of more than 37 unarmed civilians while many were injured.
Elections continue to be highly contentious in authoritarian states across the continent including in Zimbabwe. Fascist regimes including Uganda and Zimbabwe are invoking the COVID 19 pandemic as an excuse to stifle dissent. Opposition leaders and supporters are constantly targeted for harassment, assault, arbitrary arrests, abductions and extrajudicial killings among other human rights violations. These atrocities violate national constitutions, regional and continental law including the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance. These legal instruments guarantee political rights and multiparty democracy. Similar state-sponsored violence in the context of elections was witnessed in Tanzania and the Ivory Coast following their recent disputed electoral processes.
Political competition and plurality are the hallmark of a democratic society and must be celebrated and embraced as key stimulants for societal development. We call upon Ugandan authorities to take sufficient measures to ensure that the upcoming January 2021 elections are held in line with democratic principles and the electoral playing field is levelled to allow fair electoral competition where all political parties have unfettered access to potential voters and the will of the people prevails.
We further call upon the East African Community. the African Union and the rest of the international community to take proactive measures to ensure the conflict in Uganda does not further deteriorate and the January 2021 elections are held in line with domestic and international law governing the conduct of democratic elections.

MDC Alliance Condemns "State-Sponsored Violence" In Uganda.

Nelson Chamisa has lamented the way some African leaders are governing and how regional blocs like AU and SADC remain ineffective in dealing with what he called a self-made problem of dictatorship, The Standard reports. Speaking in an exclusive interview with the publication the youthful MDC Alliance Boss drew parallels between Uganda and Zimbabwe and said:
<blockquote>Africa has a new challenge. In solving our old problems of colonialism and imperialism, we have created new ones of dictatorship.
Why does Museveni and some of his cousins in Africa, southern Africa and Zimbabwe included think that they are bigger than the country?
That is the problem in Uganda and in Zimbabwe among other countries in Africa where individuals want to appear bigger than the country.
The capacity must be built, political will must be cultivated and their interests must be motivated so that they provide African solutions to African problems.
That is the challenge that is there. It is a cause for concern. Manipulating elections by these dictators is a big issue.
It is a symptom of a bigger problem, unwillingness to allow the new to be born, the old must retire for the new to rise, but we have the generational conflict that is manifesting even in inter-party politics in Africa, they can’t allow the new to bloom and conspire against young bloomers.
This whole G40 concept is actually an illustration of discomfort around young people.
Even contradictions that you have seen in liberation movements is refusal to pave the way for young people, who are treated as stakeholders instead of stockholders.
They make nations and institutions weak because they are weak. What kind of a country leaves a legacy of killing its own people and stealing from the people?
Let us leverage on the wisdom of the founding fathers and deliver that idea to have modern economies, modern infrastructure, universal visa, one good Parliament to deal with African issues — that is the Africa we want.</blockquote>
Speaking about the events in Uganda where 37 people were killed during protests, Chamisa said:
<blockquote>What is happening in Uganda is not good. The African Union slogan is ‘Silence the guns’ yet you see there are certain individuals who are loading the guns and are trigger-happy with the gun as if it’s a guitar.
Museveni must know a gun is not a guitar.
You and your cohorts and brothers, a gun is not a guitar and do not spray bullets at unarmed civilians in the streets of Africa like you are spraying seeds at your farms.
The AU says let us silence the guns, but you have cowards firing at innocent unarmed civilians. That’s what cowards do. There is no normal country that deploys guns against its people like what we are seeing.</blockquote>
The AU and SADC have remained quiet on the deadly protests that engulfed the East African nation’s capital following <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/11/20/watch-uganda-opposition-leader-bobi-wine-arrested/">the arrest of a popular opposition leader Bobi Wine.</a>

Bobi Wine who leads Uganda’s main opposition, National Unity Platform (NUP) party, was this week <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/11/20/28-people-killed-in-uganda-after-opposition-leader-is-arrested/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">arrested moments after registering his intention to contest in that country’s presidential election</a> pencilled for January 14 next year.
Protests ensued and about 37 people have already died as police clashed with the masses who are demanding the release of the popular musician.
Wine, real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, intends to challenge the incumbent president, Yoweri Museveni, 76, who aims to extend his rule to at least 40 years.
United Nations Secretary-General Spokesperson, Stephan Dujarric condemned the violence in Uganda adding that protesters have a right to demonstrate.

Twenty-eight people died in violent clashes between Ugandan security forces and supporters of detained opposition leader Bobi Wine this week.
In a statement this Friday, Ugandan police spokesperson Fred Enanga said the deaths were recorded in different areas. He said:
<blockquote>We would like to inform the public that a total of 28 people have died following the violent political demonstrations, in multiple areas.</blockquote>
Wine (38), a Ugandan presidential aspirant, was detained by police on Tuesday, just moments after he had registered his nomination to challenge Yoweri Museveni in next year’s election.
The National Unity Party, to which the opposition MP whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, belongs, said he was forcefully pulled from his car and thrown into a van in Kampala after submitting his candidacy papers to election officials.
Museveni, 76, is one of Africa’s longest-serving rulers and had the constitution amended for a second time to allow him to run a sixth time in 2021.

28 People Killed In Uganda After Opposition Leader Is Arrested

Ugandan opposition leader, Bobi Wine has claimed that police knocked one of his party members for wearing the party’s regalia.
Posting on Twitter, Bobi Wine vowed to dislodge the Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s regime from power. The former musician said:
<blockquote>Very sad day! Yet again, a leader of the People Power Movement has been murdered by the Museveni regime. Police officers in a patrol vehicle saw comrade Rita Nabukenya donning our attire, drove after her and knocked her dead in broad daylight. We must end this regime of blood.

Bobi Wine Says Ugandan Police Killed His Supporter In Broad Daylight For Wearing Party Regalia

South African musician, Yvonne Chaka Chaka has responded to remarks saying that she was deported from Uganda where she was scheduled to perform on New Year eve.
Initial reports had said that the musician was deported over visa irregularities. Other versions of the story alleged that the music star had been <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/uganda-deports-yvonne-chaka-chaka-after-she-likens-bobi-wine-to-mandela/">deported for likening Ugandan opposition politician, Bobi Wine to former South Africa president Nelson Mandela.</a>

Renowned SA Musician Yvone Chaka Chaka Responds To Reports Saying She Was Deported From Uganda

The Ugandan Police in a bid to quell the social media frenzy over Yvonne Chaka Chaka’s deportation has said Yvonne was deported on Visa issues since she didn’t have a work visa required for anyone who is conducting an income-generating activity in Uganda.

The government of Uganda has deported South African singer Yvonne Chaka Chaka after she reportedly likened the country’s young opposition leader, Bobi Wine, to the late anti-apartheid icon, Nelson Mandela.
The Ugandan Police Force and immigration officials, working in cahoots, deported Chaka Chaka on visa grounds. Writing on Twitter, Wine said:
<blockquote>Our friends from abroad have attracted the wrath of the state for openly supporting our struggle for freedom.
Today international icon Yvonne Chaka Chaka was deported from Uganda. Whatever reasons the security agencies give, we all know the regime is afraid of her SONGS OF FREEDOM!</blockquote>
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni is one of the remaining autocratic leaders on the African continent who came to power through a military coup.
Museveni visited Zimbabwe in April this year at the invitation of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Government_of_Zimbabwe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">the government of Zimbabwe</a> for the official opening of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_International_Trade_Fair" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe International Trade Fair</a>.

Uganda Deports Yvonne Chaka Chaka After She Likens Bobi Wine To Mandela

The visiting Ugandan politician, Bobi Wine was reportedly detained for about an hour by Zimbabwe’s security agents soon after he landed at the RGMI Airport on Friday.
Wine is a Member of Parliament of an opposition political party in his home country.
Wine was in the company of a secretary general of opposition Kenya’s Orange Democratic Movement and the duo were detained together.
The arrest of the two East Africans was revealed by MDC spokesperson Jacob Mafume. He said:
<blockquote>This is what we have in Africa. We must liberate the continent of artificial borders created by capitalists, a Berlin in Germany led by a chap known as Otto von Bismarck.
This is what authorities that respect colonial borders do. The MDC does not respect that. We want Africans to be able to travel anywhere they want.
He will share with you the details of his ordeal.</blockquote>
NewZimbabwe sources said that the security agents wanted to know the contents of the speech that Wine was to deliver at the MDC congress. Said the source:
<blockquote>They demanded to know what he is going to say. They accused him of coming to Zimbabwe to stoke tensions and violence.
Security accused the Kenyan opposition leader of trying to inspire an uprising in Zimbabwe.
They only let him go after he indicated he would urge dialogue in his speech.</blockquote>

A Ugandan musician and legislator, Bobi Wine is set to grace the MDC Congress as one of the special guests currently underway in the Midlands.
Bobi Wine, who was born Robert Kyagulanyi in 1982, has been persecuted and imprisoned by the country’s dictator, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni
Wine’s coming for the MDC congress was confirmed by the party’s president Nelson Chamisa who said in a statement:
