<p>Abductors seized an envoy who delivered a ransom payment for the release of more than 100 Nigerian children abducted in May.</p>
<p>Northwest and central Nigeria are a hotbed of cattle thieves and kidnappers who raid villages, killing and abducting residents after looting and burning homes.</p>
<p>The gangs have recently stepped up attacks on schools, kidnapping students to squeeze ransom from parents.</p>
<p>On May 30, around 200 motorcycle-riding gunmen, known locally as bandits, stormed Tegina town in central Niger state and abducted 136 pupils from an Islamic seminary.</p>
<p>Last month, 15 of the hostages escaped while their captors were asleep in a remote village in neighbouring Zamfara state where they were being held.</p>
<p>On July 20, parents and school officials sent a 60-year-old man, Kassim Tegina, to deliver 30 million naira ($73 000) to the kidnappers, but the bandits seized him after collecting the money.</p>
<p>Abubakar Alhassan the headteacher of Salihu Tanko Islamic school where the children were snatched said Monday:</p>
<blockquote><p>To our shock, the kidnappers took the money and seized the courier and refused to release the children.</p>
<p>They were angry that the ransom was too small. We don’t understand what they want because that was the amount we agreed on after a series of phone negotiations.</p></blockquote>
<p>The kidnappers said they were holding him along with the children until more money had been paid.</p>
<p>The headteacher said the bandits had initially demanded 200 million naira ($487 000) but later reduced the amount to 30 million naira.</p>
<p>The ransom was said to have been raised by parents and through voluntary donations from concerned people and groups.</p>
<p>Alhassan said they cannot raise any more ransom money adding “We have resigned to fate.”</p>
<p>The state government has repeatedly vowed not to pay ransom to kidnappers.</p>
<p>Around 1 000 schoolchildren and students have been kidnapped in Nigeria since December.</p>

Nigerian Abductors Seize Man Sent With Ransom For Kidnapped Children

<p>A bridge in the central Nigerian state of Kogi, collapsed barely a week after its completion, a development that has left the state’s governor in trouble.</p>
<p>The administration of Governor Yahaya Bello is being accused of using substandard materials in constructing the Ozuma Bridge in Okene which reportedly cost millions of naira.</p>
<p>The opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has since called for an inquiry into the governor over the incident arguing that it put the lives of the general public in danger.</p>
<p>There has not been any confirmation of any casualties or the amount of damage following the incident. PDP said in a statement:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>_The PDP youth also knocked Governor Bello over the collapse of a bridge built by his administration just after one week of construction, noting that such is indicative of the shambolic state of governance in the state under an imprudent and manifestly misguided leadership._</em></p>
<p>_The PDP youths demands that Yahaya Bello should face investigation at the appropriate time for using substandard materials to construct a bridge, thereby endangering lives in the state._</p></blockquote>
<p>There have been increasing reports of collapsing infrastructure, especially buildings, in Nigeria with some blaming the issue on poor enforcement of construction regulations and the use of substandard materials.</p>
<p>The collapse of the Nigerian bridge come when Botswana and Zambia have commissioned <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kazungula_Bridge">the Kazungula Bridge</a> which is premised on easing access into the SADC region and the whole of Africa at large.</p>
<p>Botswana and Zambia agreed, in principle, with Zimbabwe to have the latter on board after it had left the coalition years ago.</p>

Nigerian Bridge Collapses One Week After Construction

<p>Boko Haram jihadists killed at least eleven (11) people, burnt a church and seized a priest on Christmas Eve in Nigeria’s restive northeast.</p>
<p>AFP was told that on Thursday, fighters in trucks and motorcycles stormed Pemi, a predominantly Christian village in Borno State, shooting indiscriminately and setting buildings on fire.</p>

<p>Villagers fled into the bush and some are still said to be missing. Militia leader Abwaku Kabu said:</p>

<p>The attackers also burnt a church, abducted a priest and stole medical supplies from a hospital, before setting it on fire.</p>
<p>Pemi is close to Chibok where 200 schoolgirls were kidnapped in 2014 and held many captives for years.</p>
<p>Boko Haram jihadists have carried out a number of attacks in northern Nigeria where they are fighting to overthrow the government and create an Islamic state.</p>

<p>They promote a version of Islam that forbids Muslims from taking part in activity not derived from Islamic tradition.</p>
<p>Boko Haram loosely translates to mean “Western education is forbidden”.</p>
<p>The United Nations reports that the group has so far killed at least 36 000 people and displaced two million from their homes since the beginning of the conflict decades ago.</p>

Boko Haram Kills 11, Burn Church, Seize Priest On Christmas

<p>Nigeria police have rescued 19 pregnant women and girls who were abducted and forced into sex slavery. Their babies would be taken and be sold.</p>
<p>Most of the women and girls rescued are said to be aged between 15 and 28 years.</p>
<p>These women and girls were duped into believing that they were being recruited to work as housemaids in Lagos.</p>
<p>The police who were acting on a tip-off rescued the women but the woman who ran the operation, known as Madam Oluchi, escaped shortly before the raids.</p>
<p>Pulse Nigeria reports that the police spokesperson said that two women who worked as nurses in the properties had been arrested in connection with the matter. The police said:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>Two suspects, namely Happiness Ukwuoma… and Sherifat Ipeya… were arrested in connection with the case.</strong></p>
<p><strong>The suspects did not receive formal medical training but operate as nurses.</strong></p>
<p><strong>The young women were mostly abducted by the suspects for the purpose of getting them pregnant and selling the babies to potential buyers.</strong></p></blockquote>

<p>The FC Platinum delegation of players, technical members and the media were petrified when security forces guarding the Owando aerodrome in Congo Brazzaville told them of the possibility of an attack from Boko Haram.</p>

<blockquote><p>This aerodrome is not a busy one and Boko Haram rebels who operate from nearby Cameroon are aware that any plane that lands here are a potential hostage situation since it will be a chartered flight whose occupants could be people of financial means.</p></blockquote>
