The Giyani Specialised Commercial Crime Court, South Africa, has ordered a Zimbabwean man to pay a fine of R50,000 or five years in prison after he was convicted of corruption.
As reported by <a href="https://www.iol.co.za/news/crime-and-courts/court-slaps-zimbabwean-man-with-r50000-fine-for-trying-to-bribe-limpopo-cops-with-r50-b666965d-4d98-4a10-93ce-2dfc7660dd38">IOL</a>, Felix Tatenda Chiyangwa, 37, was also fined R5,000 or one year’s imprisonment for being an illegal immigrant in South Africa.
Regional spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Limpopo, Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, said:

The sentences will be served concurrently, resulting in an effective sentence of five years’ direct imprisonment.
</blockquote>
Chiyangwa pleaded guilty to the charges, revealing that on 5 October 2024, in Musina, Limpopo, two police officers approached him and asked for his passport.
Malabi-Dzhangi said he presented an expired passport from 2020 and, to avoid arrest, offered one of the officers R50, asking them not to take him into custody. 
The officers accepted the money but later arrested Chiyangwa for his corrupt actions.
Senior State Advocate Martin Molokwane urged the court to impose a substantial sentence during sentencing, citing various case laws.
He highlighted the prevalence of corruption within the court’s jurisdiction and across South Africa, stressing that the crime undermines public safety and trust in law enforcement.
Molokwane stated that police officers act as the “immune system” of the country in terms of security and crime prevention, and any form of corruption compromises this system.
He urged the court to impose a severe penalty, arguing that corruption is “a serious offence regardless of the amount involved.”
The court agreed with Molokwane, acknowledging the need to send “a clear message” to society about the consequences of corrupt behaviour.
The NPA in Limpopo welcomed the court’s decision, expressing hope that the sentence would deter potential offenders.
Advocate Ivy Thenga, Director of Public Prosecutions in Limpopo, condemned Chiyangwa’s conduct and reiterated the NPA’s commitment to combating corruption in all its forms.
Thenga also congratulated the prosecution team led by Molokwane and the investigators for their dedication to upholding the law.

South African Court Slaps Zimbabwean Man With R50 000 Fine For Trying To Bribe Police Officers

A 35-year-old Zimbabwean taxi driver was arrested in South Africa on charges of reckless and negligent driving, and fraud.
As reported by <a href="https://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/gauteng/pressed-by-cops-reckless-taxi-driver-says-drivers-licence-belongs-to-his-brother-in-zimbabwe-0d327d32-873b-49ed-a09d-0474c9ce3c8b">IOL</a>, Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa said the suspect confessed that the driver’s licence he produced belonged to his brother who is in Zimbabwe.
The 35-year-old man who was driving a Toyota Quantum Ses’fikile minibus taxi was stopped for reckless driving and it was also discovered that the driver’s licence he produced did not belong to him. Said Thepa:

On Friday, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department’s Tembisa precinct officers arrested an undocumented 35-year-old motorist, for reckless and negligent driving, in the Tembisa area.
Officers patrolling on Andrew Mapheto Drive noticed a white Toyota Quantum Ses’fikile minibus taxi driving inconsiderably, disobeying road traffic signs, near the Isangweni taxi rank.
A chase ensued and the male driver stopped at the robot (traffic light) next to the Mpho Bridge at Mpho Section.
It is alleged that when approached, the suspect produced a fake driver’s license with a photo that was not of him. When asked, the suspect confessed that the license belonged to his brother who is in Zimbabwe.

Police said the taxi driver was immediately handcuffed and detained at the Rabasotho police station. He is facing charges under the Immigration Act plus reckless and negligent driving, and fraud.
The Toyota Quantum minibus taxi was taken to the Tembisa EMPD precinct for further investigations.

Reckless Zimbabwean Taxi Driver Arrested In SA, He Is A Border Jumper And Was Using Brother's Driver's License

Authorities in Johannesburg have cautioned South Africans about harbouring illegal immigrants, stating that such actions make them accomplices to a crime.
The warning comes after the arrest of 867 individuals believed to be illegal miners in Kleinzee, Northern Cape. Provincial Police Commissioner Koliswa Otola revealed that the majority of those arrested were foreigners suspected of unlawfully entering the country. Said Otola:
<blockquote>
As a word of caution to all South Africans that are harbouring illegal immigrants in their houses, we know the illegal immigrants don’t come here with houses, so they are harboured by South Africans.
Those South Africans who are harbouring illegal immigrants, we are coming for them because they are causing a problem for us.
</blockquote>
South African authorities have been actively seeking to deport illegal immigrants, attributing them to various issues such as increased crime, economic strain, and burden on the struggling healthcare system. Local residents also hold foreign nationals responsible for the escalating unemployment rate, claiming that they occupy jobs intended for locals.
Among the foreign nationals residing in South Africa, Zimbabweans form a significant portion, approximately three million. They arrived in large numbers after the economic collapse and political instability in their home country at the turn of the millennium. Any changes in South Africa’s immigration policy are likely to affect the large settlement of hundreds of thousands.
Analysts predict that such measures will also have a significant negative impact on the economy since foreign nationals have been a key contributor to the country’s growth over the past two decades. They often provide cheap labour compared to locals.

Johannesburg Authorities Warn South Africans Against Harboring Illegal Immigrants

A Zimbabwe-based bus company, Rimbi Travel and Tours Bus Service, has been fined more than R400 000 by South Africa for breaking the Southern African country’s immigration laws.
This comes after one of the company’s buses arrived at the Beitbridge border post with passengers who did not have passports, thereby breaking the Immigration Act.
Rimbi has been given until the end of business on Tuesday to pay an R420 000 fine or the Department of Home Affairs will recover the money through legal means.
In a statement, Department of Home Affairs spokesperson Siya Qoza said on 29 March 2021, a driver of a Rimbi Travel and Tours bus arrived at the border post with 28 passengers who did not have passports.
Rimbi was subsequently fined R420,000 for transporting passengers without appropriate travel documents but the bus operator appealed the decision.
However, the appeal was rejected and the order to pay the fine was upheld. The fine is payable within 30 days of issue. Said Qoza in a statement:

The minister of home affairs determined in a Government Gazette of 03 June 2014 that any conveyor [transport business] that contravenes the provisions of section 35(9), will be liable for a fine of R15,000 for each person who arrives at a port of entry without appropriate travel documents.
Section 35(9) of the Immigration Act places on the person in charge of a transport business the responsibility of ensuring that all foreign passengers travelling through a port of entry have valid passports and relevant valid visas for their travel.

According to Qoza, transport companies that want to enter the country with passengers who do not have valid passports and visas, where required, are fined, denied entry and ordered to return such passengers to the sending country.

SA Fines Zimbabwean Bus Operator R400 000 For Carrying Border Jumpers

A 23-year-old Zimbabwean man living in Botswana has been arrested in the neighbouring country for allegedly raping a 37-year-old woman.
Thabani Murudangwa is accused of raping the woman of Marobela village on 1 October.
He is also facing charges of entering the country illegally and without travelling documents in December 2020 near Maitengwe.
Murudangwa was arraigned before the Francistown Magistrate Court last week where two charges were levelled against him.
Police investigating officer, Meshack Mosika, asked the magistrate to remand Murudangwa in custody. He said:

We pray that the accused be remanded in custody to allow investigations. We need to identify some potential witnesses and collect their statements.
The charge the accused is facing is a serious one that attracted public interest as it is associated with gender-based violence.
We fear that should he be given bail he might escape. I find him not a bail candidate.
So we pray he be remanded in custody until the completion of this matter your worship.

The magistrate concurred and remanded Marudangwa in custody. He will be back in court on 28 October.

Zimbabwean Border Jumper Arrested For Rape In Botswana

A suspected border jumper drowned in the Limpopo River while attempting to illegally cross between South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Police found the body near Panda Mine in an advanced state of decomposition after they were alerted by a villager who was looking for his donkeys.
The development was confirmed by Officer commanding Beitbridge District, Chief Superintendent Tichaona Nyongo who however revealed that some reports about drownings are still being investigated. He said:
<blockquote>We have been hearing rumours, but it is very difficult to establish the facts without anyone reporting on the cases or location.
However, so far we have one case of drowning that occurred at an illegal crossing point near Panda Mine.
We have retrieved the body of a man who was spotted trapped between rocks by a villager who was looking for his donkeys along the Limpopo River on December 17.
The body of the unidentified man was retrieved at the advanced state of decomposition and indications are that he could have drowned while crossing the flooded Limpopo River.</blockquote>
Cases of drowning have become common in Beitbridge during the ongoing rainy season.
Currently, the Limpopo River, now six metres deep, and many streams are in flood with heavy rains continuing across the region.

Body Of Suspected Border Jumper Retrieved From Limpopo River

Nine Malawian nationals who crossed illegally into Zimbabwe from South Africa and were intercepted along with 32 others have tested positive for COVID-19.
The nine have now been put on isolation at the National Social Security (NSSA) hotel in Beitbridge while the thirty-two have since been moved by the Government to their embassy in Harare pending repatriation.
The latest development was confirmed on Wednesday by the Director of Social Welfare in the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Totamirepi Tirivavi. He said:
<blockquote>The group was profiled and screened for the COVID-19 and nine have been isolated in Beitbridge pending further PCR tests.
These will only be allowed to travel once they are fit to do so. We have since moved 32 others to Harare in liaison with the Malawian Embassy pending their repatriation.</blockquote>
The Malawian citizens were intercepted on Tuesday by security agents on patrol while seeking transport from haulage trucks at a local truck stop.
In another development, nine 19 people who escaped quarantine in Beitbridge on Monday night are still to be located.
The escapees are part of the people arrested along the Limpopo River for facilitating the smuggling of goods.

9 Malawian Border Jumpers Test Positive For Coronavirus

Botswana police have arrested 4000 Zimbabweans who were trying to smuggle themselves into that country.
The development was announced by Botswana senior police officer, assistant superintendent Mothokomedi Ponyane whilst addressing delegates during a Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) mass crime awareness campaign at Dingumuzi Stadium in Plumtree on Tuesday. Ponyame said:
<blockquote>The most problematic issue in Botswana is illegal border crossing. Between January and September this year, statistics show that we arrested 4387 Zimbabwean nationals crossing into Botswana through border jumping. Out of this total number, 2479 are males and the remaining comprised of both women and children.</blockquote>
Most Zimbabweans have been jumping the borders to neighbouring countries as the country’s economy has continued on a downward spiral.
The soaring inflation, power cuts, shortage of medicines, high unemployment rates, the collapse of the health sector and severe starvation have been the major attributes of the migration although some claim that they are political victims.

4000 Zimbabwean Border Jumpers Intercepted At Botswana Border

Two hippopotamuses were shot dead in the Limpopo River on Friday last week after they attacked and injured a Zimbabwean man who was trying to cross into South Africa illegally.
The Municipality of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Beitbridge" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Beitbridge</a> confirmed the attack and revealed that the injured man later died from his wounds at the Beitbridge District Hospital. The council said in a statement:
<blockquote>Two hippos were gunned down in Limpopo River (after) having injured an individual suspected to be a border jumper in the early hours of Friday. The injured individual is said to have passed on later at the Beitbridge District Hospital.</blockquote>
The incident comes after a <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_National_Army" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe National Army</a> officer was killed by a hippo on patrol near the Limpopo River in July this year.
Pelious Moyo from Tongwe in Beitbridge district was part of soldiers deployed at a checkpoint between Zimbabwe and South Africa. He was attacked at dawn as the hippo was headed to the river from grazing.
