A total of 14 school-age children from Tsholotsho District in Matabeleland North Province are reportedly being held in Botswana after being intercepted by authorities on August 10 while en route to South Africa.
The children were being transported by a cross-border operator and did not have legal documentation.
The children attend Mahole and Hondola primary schools, as well as Mavela, Tshithatshawa, and John Landa secondary schools in Tsholotsho District, with the youngest among them enrolled in Early Childhood Development (ECD).
One mother told the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/14-zimbabwean-children-stuck-in-botswana/">Chronicle</a> that she paid ZAR 1,000 to transport her child to South Africa without a passport. She said:

My child was intercepted in Botswana while coming for a visit to South Africa where I work. I have gone there countless times to try and secure her release but it’s hard.
They even ordered us to do DNA tests to prove that we were the parents. When we go there, we are not allowed to see the children as authorities say we will traumatise them.

The woman said that the case was taken to court, and the children were handed over to Botswana’s social welfare department in Tutume, near Maitengwe Territory.
Parents are increasingly concerned that their children are missing valuable class time since school opened two weeks ago, particularly those in exam classes who may miss their final examinations.
What pains the parents the most is that they are not allowed to see their children and have no knowledge of their living conditions.
Former Tsholotsho Rural District Council chairperson and Ward 9 councillor Esau Siwela has appealed to the government for assistance in bringing the children back home. Said Siwela:

The parents approached me as most of them are from my ward. I took them to the Registrar’s Office in Tsholotsho where they got all documents proving that they are the biological parents of the children.
They did affidavits at Tsholotsho Police Station to enable them to travel to Botswana. When we got to Botswana they took all the papers we had prepared.
They also did interviews with the parents and did DNA tests. We returned home and were called after three days but when we got there they said some parents did not submit their documents, which delayed the process.
This issue needs to be resolved soon as the children may not be able to recover lost time at school. Those in final year exam classes will have serious challenges. My appeal is to the Government to help bring our children home.

Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage permanent secretary Raphael Tayerera Faranisi said that such matters are managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as they involve another country.
Efforts by the publication to reach Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Michael Mukura for comment were unsuccessful; he did not answer phone calls or respond to messages.

The kids are missing school and some might miss exams. The government is being asked to help. The parents did everything they could to prove they are the kids' real parents. The case is now with social services in Botswana. The Zimbabwean government is needed to help resolve the issue.

14 Zimbabwean Children Detained In Botswana

Zimbabwean and South African security forces have destroyed illegal bridges across the Limpopo River, which serves as the natural border between the two countries and also seized large quantities of smuggled goods in the past three weeks.
On the Zimbabwean side, immigration officials are dealing with child trafficking cases, with the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) cracking down on import duty evasion and the smuggling of prohibited goods.
The Assistant Regional Immigration Officer at Beitbridge Canisia Magaya told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/zim-sa-intensify-border-patrols/">State media</a> that between March 26 and April 5, they intercepted 59 illegal immigrants at Beitbridge Border Post. Some of the border jumpers were en route to South Africa while others had crossed into Zimbabwe. Said Magaya:

We are not relenting in our efforts to minimise irregular migration through the border. Of the 59 intercepted between March 26 and April 5, 28 were boys and there were 31 girls.
In addition, seven cross-border bus operators were fined for facilitating illegal migration. During the same period, we also intercepted 10 undocumented Malawians and three Congolese nationals who have been taken to court for prosecution.

She said the movement of children from both countries was common during public and school holidays. Added Magaya:
<blockquote>
Those with kids should have requisite documents, for instance, those travelling with guardians should in addition to a valid passport, have a copy of the child’s birth certificate.
</blockquote>
For one parent travelling with the child, an affidavit signed by the non-travelling parent is required, together with copies of the ID/passport of the parent.
Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson Colonel Malasela Ledwaba said they were conducting a high-density operation dubbed “Vala Umgodi” with the help of other security agents.
The Operation is targetting smugglers moving prohibited and counterfeit goods into or out of South Africa.
Col Ledwaba said the smugglers in some instances were using donkey-pulled carts or wood rafts and illegal bridges made from logs to move contraband.
He revealed that between Saturday and Sunday, they arrested 25 people for smuggling and seized goods worth thousands of rands along the Limpopo River.
Col Ledwaba said they have arrested a total number of 23 foreign nationals for contravention of immigration laws.
South African police also discovered abandoned mbanje worth thousands of rands weighing about 9,5kg while they were patrolling the borderline.

Zim, SA Authorities Destroy Illegal Limpopo Bridges

The South African Police Service (SAPS) seized nine inflatable boats that were being used by smugglers on Wednesday afternoon at Chirumbu east of Musina in Vhembe District.
The boats were allegedly being used by gangs to assist undocumented migrants in crossing into the country.
In a statement, SAPS said the smuggling ring was busted under the ongoing Operation Vala Umgodi. Reads the statement:

The joint Law Enforcement Agencies through Operation Vala Umgodi on Wednesday afternoon, 21 February 2024, seized nine inflatable boats at Chirumbu east of Musina in Vhembe District.
Members of the SAPS K9 Unit, Border Policing Teams and the SANDF followed information about the smuggling of illegal immigrants and counterfeit goods at the sandbank of the Limpopo River.
The suspects evaded arrest by fleeing on foot upon realizing that they were being cornered, abandoning inflatable boats.
Subsequently, Police seized the boats, which are expected to be disposed of.

South African Police Seize Nine Boats Used To Facilitate Border Jumping

A member of Zambia’s former ruling party Patriotic Front (PF), Chishimba Kambwili, has reportedly left Zambia for Zimbabwe in defiance of immigration laws.
As reported by <a href="https://www.lusakatimes.com/2024/02/03/chishimba-kambwili-illegally-leaves-zambia-for-zimbabwe-amidst-controversy/">Lusaka Times</a>, Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister Jack Mwiimbu told the media that preliminary investigations indicated that Kambwili, who was scheduled for evacuation to South Africa for medical treatment on Thursday, opted to leave for Zimbabwe instead.
It is alleged that on 30 January 2024, an unidentified Zimbabwean man presented Kambwili’s passport to an immigration officer at the Chirundu border post.
When asked to have the passport holder present himself for clearance, the unknown individual fled, leaving the passport behind.
Speaking during yesterday’s press briefing, Mwiimbu said Kambwili contravened immigration laws by crossing into Zimbabwe without completing exit formalities, violating Section 16(1) of the Immigration and Deportation Act Number 18 of 2010.
The Act mandates any person exiting the country to appear before an immigration officer for exit clearance formalities.
It was further revealed that Kambwili’s passport was not confiscated by the state but left at the immigration office at the Chirundu border post.
The vehicle transporting Kambwili into Zimbabwe reportedly had a Zimbabwean number plate.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security has initiated investigations into Kambwili’s departure.

Zambian Opposition Politician "Flees" To Zimbabwe

A 36-year-old Zimbabwean man has been sentenced to eight years in prison by a South African court for two crimes committed in that country.
Cosmos Ndou was found in possession of a stolen car and also for staying in South Africa illegally.
A media statement from South African police signed by Colonel Malesela Ledwaba reads in part:

Mokopane Regional Court convicted and sentenced a 36-year-old Zimbabwean male, Cosmos Ndou, to an effective eight years imprisonment for possession of a stolen motor vehicle and contravention of the Immigration Act on Friday, January 12, 2024.
The conviction and subsequent sentencing come after the court heard that on September 18, 2023, the accused was found in possession of a stolen motor vehicle, a bronze Toyota Fortuner that was reported stolen in the Brooklyn policing area, in Gauteng province on the 16 September 2023.
On September 18, the police arrested the suspect, after the security company at Mookgophong was alerted by tracking company to be on the lookout of the stolen vehicle that was coming at their direction, along R101 North.
The security (company) stopped the vehicle and found the driver, then explained to him that the vehicle was reported stolen. The police were quickly activated, and they immediately apprehended the suspect.

Ndou will serve six years in prison for being found in possession of the stolen car and an additional two years for violating South Africa’s immigration laws.
The sentences will not run concurrently, which means he will spend six years behind bars.

Zimbabwean Man (36) Jailed In South Africa Over Stolen Car

South Africa’s Home Affairs Minister, Aaron Motsoaledi Motsoaledi, has said border guards were trained and deployed to various land border law enforcement areas and ports of entry to detect and prevent illegal entry into South Africa.
He made the remarks in response to Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) parliamentarian, Liezl van der Merwe, who wanted to know about measures to address the growing number of undocumented foreign nationals in South Africa.
Liezl van der Merwe has raised concerns about South Africa’s high murder rate and has previously expressed concerns about neighbouring countries having easy access to the country. Motsoaledi said in his <a href="https://www.defenceweb.co.za/featured/minister-says-border-guards-trained-to-stop-illegals-entering-sa/">written</a> response:

Illegal foreign nationals who are apprehended in the border law enforcement area are handed over to Immigration Services who do verification of their nationality. Once the process is concluded, the deportation process will be initiated.
</blockquote>
Motsoaledi stated that the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) inspectorate unit coordinates with the police to locate illegal immigrants. When apprehended, their status is verified, and if found to be undocumented or illegal, the process of deportation is initiated.
He said the DHA will use handheld “IT tools” with biometric capabilities to remotely access and verify information on the National Population Register (NPR) during citizenship-related operations. The procurement of these tools was financed through the Criminal Asset Recovery (CARA) fund.
Last year in March, Motsoaledi informed the same IFP parliamentarian that the government does not have an exact number of undocumented immigrants in South Africa due to the secretive nature of being in the country illegally.
Different studies have provided varying unverifiable figures, ranging from three to six million or more. According to Statistics SA, there are 3.95 million foreign nationals in South Africa, regardless of their status.
People may illegally enter South Africa for various reasons, including economic opportunities, political instability or persecution or justice in their home countries. South Africa is considered a relatively stable and prosperous country compared to many of its neighbours, and it attracts many migrants from across the region.

Border Guards Deployed To Prevent Illegal Entry Into South Africa - Motsoaledi

Forty-one undocumented Zimbabweans were arrested in South Africa for illegal chrome mining.
In a statement, police spokesman Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the suspects will appear before the Mecklenburg Magistrate’s Court this Thursday. Said Ledwaba:

The suspects were apprehended during a joint intelligence operation conducted by the members of the Provincial Illegal Mining Task Team, Provincial Organised Crime Unit together with the RR Undercover Security Company at Ga-Phasha village under Sefateng mine jurisdiction in Mecklenburg policing precinct at about 23:30.
Police received information about illegal mining activities taking place in the area and swiftly reacted. Upon arrival, police found the suspects busy mining a precious metal (chrome) at the mine without authorisation.
When the suspects saw police, they ran into the nearby bushes and others went inside the self-made tunnels to avoid being nabbed.
Police confiscated 12 generators and 10 jackhammers all valued at R170 000 as well as chrome ore worth R1 million from the suspects.

Ledwaba said the suspects are all male and aged between 18 and 43. 41 are undocumented Zimbabweans, one is a Mozambican national and there is also a South African citizen.
Ledwaba vowed that South African police will stop at nothing in ensuring that illegal miners are arrested and prosecuted.

41 Zimbabwean Border Jumpers Arrested In SA For Illegal Chrome Mining

Eighty-four (84) Malawian immigrants are languishing in Zimbabwean prisons after they were arrested for travelling without requisite documents.
It is believed that the majority of the immigrants had no intention of staying in Zimbabwe but were travelling to South Africa.
Malawi’s deputy ambassador to Zimbabwe Elias Mpaso confirmed that scores of Malawians are detained in Zimbabwean prisons saying the embassy was making efforts to repatriate them. He said:

Last Friday we had 84 Malawian nationals in Zimbabwean jails. There are 66 males at Harare Remand Prison and 18 females at Chikurubi. These people were arrested in different parts of Zimbabwe.
However, the government is trying its best to repatriate them, we are still waiting for the Foreign Affairs Department to officially inform us. We are also sourcing funds from Malawi for their repatriation.
In Malawi, the repatriation process is done in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Food Disaster Management to take our citizens back to Malawi.

Zimbabwe does not have holding facilities for immigrants awaiting deportation and as a result, border jumpers are imprisoned.

84 Malawian Border Jumpers Languish In Zim Prisons

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), says it has arrested over 55 000 people for border-related crimes.
In January police launched operation “No to Cross Border Crimes/ Fhasi Ngamilandu Yamukanoni Yamashango/Mhosva Pamiganhu Ngadzipere/Amacala Kawaphele Emingceleni Yelizwe” in a bid to combat border-related crimes such as smuggling and border jumping.
This came after Zimbabwe and South Africa had closed the Beitbridge Border Post to ordinary travellers as part of the two countries’ efforts to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.
In a post on its Twitter, page, ZRP said 194 people were arrested on 10 October. The post read:

On 10 October police arrested 194 people countrywide under the operation No to Cross Border Crimes/ Fhasi Ngamilandu Yamukanoni Yamashango/Mhosva Pamiganhu Ngadzipere/Amacala Kawaphele Emingceleni Yelizwe.
So far Police have arrested 55 219 people throughout the country since the operation commenced in January 2021.

In an unrelated development, a man was murdered in Esigodini in a case of mistaken identity.
ZRP confirmed the arrest of Tichaona Moyo (24) in connection with a murder case that occurred at Esbomvu Business Centre, Esigodini, around 8 PM on the 10th of October.
The suspect together with his accomplice, Philbert Nyoni (28), who is still at large, attacked the victim Thabisa Majange (16) after they allegedly mistaken him to be Madlenkosi Sibanda (33) whom they had an argument with earlier.

55 000 Arrested For Smuggling, Border Jumping

Some of the people are carrying huge loads, an indication of rife smuggling across the two countries. The illegal movements do not only have a huge economic cost (through smuggling), they also increase the spread of the novel coronavirus.

South African security forces have arrested over 300 illegal immigrants in Musina, a town close to the border with Zimbabwe.
It is believed that those nabbed on Wednesday are Zimbabwean nationals.
A joint statement by the MEC for Transport and Safety Mamane Dickson Masemola, and the Limpopo Province commander of South African Police Services (Saps), Lieutenant-General Nneke Ledwaba issued on Wednesday reads in part:
<blockquote>The MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Namane Dickson Masemola, has today (August 21, 2019) visited Musina in support of the law enforcement operation, Basadi.
The on-duty parade was held at the Musina South African National Defence Force (Sandf) military base and the integrated operation was conducted until 13:00hrs, covering Musina, the Beitbridge Border Post and surrounding areas.
In total, 373 suspects were arrested for residence and business burglary, aggravated and common assaults, thefts of and from motor vehicles.</blockquote>
Hundreds of Zimbabweans cross the border to South Africa daily with some of them doing so illegally as they do not possess travel documents.
The government of Zimbabwe has failed to provide enough passport for its citizens with production being at 800 per day. The passport backlog now stands in the hundreds of thousands.

Over 300 Zimbabweans Arrested In Musina

Former Cabinet Minister and G40 kingpin Saviour Kasukuwere appeared in court today facing charges of contravening the Immigration Act after “border jumping” when he fled the country last year. This comes after his brother, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/05/31/kasukuweres-brother-sentenced-to-11-months-in-prison-for-border-jumping/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Dickson Mafios was sentenced to 11 months in prison for the same offence</a>. Kasukuwere who returned to Zimbabwe only last week after spending 6-months in self-imposed exile was granted $300 bail. He was remanded to the 11th of June 2018 after he pleaded not guilty.  The former minister was ordered to report to the police regularly.
Fellow G40 compatriot and former cabinet minister Jonathan Moyo was not amused and highlighted the issue of selective prosecution. He queried why President Emmerson Mnangagwa had not been prosecuted on the same charges despite the fact that he has admitted on numerous occasions that he also “jumped” the border last year when he was fired. Said Moyo,
<blockquote>Why was Mnangagwa not charged for violating immigration laws on 6 Nov 2017 when he jumped the border with an LV (Louise Vuitton) briefcase &amp; thousands of dollars? Instead, he’s been boasting about it &amp; recommending border jumping as a prerequisite for the presidency!</blockquote>
