Nine Zimbabwean nationals residing in Botswana have been formally charged with murder and illegal entry after allegedly killing a fellow Zimbabwean man.
As reported by <a href="https://www.mmegi.bw/news/nine-zimbabweans-charged-with-murder/news">Mmegi</a>, the incident involved the brutal assault of Tavonanashe Mariga, who was reportedly attacked by the accused, who stomped on his testicles.
The nine men, aged between 23 and 38, include Crispen Gasura (33), Desmond Dube (23), Takesure Fraser (38), Abbisai Gasura (29), Justice Mafukidze (25), Clayton Chiwa (35), Spencer Gasura (35), Calvin Mafukidze (27), and Alouis Gasura (23).
All are facing charges in connection with this violent crime.
The shocking events took place at Matebele Farms on January 5, 2025, after the accused persons accused Mariga of stealing P1,500. They assaulted him severely and filmed the entire ordeal.
Bound and helpless, Mariga was beaten with sticks and stomped on until he lost consciousness. Tragically, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Prosecutor Mmoloki Selofera urged the court to keep the accused in custody, citing the extreme brutality inflicted on the deceased before his death.
The accused were recently brought before the Broadhurst Magistrates’ Court to face these serious charges. Said Selofera:

The accused persons shouldn’t be granted bail as this is a relatively new matter. And we are still waiting for the post-mortem results, forensic affidavit, and the photo album.

Meanwhile, the accused, who are farm workers at Matebele Farms, pleaded not guilty to the charges before Magistrate Goratile Moremi-Ramakoloi.
They have been remanded in custody until their next court appearance on February 13, 2025.

A Zimbabwean man living in Botswana, Anesu Hwenjere (27), is accused of murdering his cousin, Victor Mashinge, in a shocking incident that took place in Gotshielo ward, Ramotswa, between January 5 and 8.
As reported by the <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200037715/zim-man-beheads-cousin-in-bots-mutilates-private-parts">Southern Eye</a>, Hwenjere allegedly struck Mashinge with a heavy object, believed to be a rock, before beheading him and mutilating his private parts.
Hwenjere appeared in the Extension II Magistrates Court on January 13, where disturbing details of the murder emerged. He was remanded in custody until February 28.
The court heard that after Mashinge went missing from work for three consecutive days, a concerned friend visited their shared residence. Hwenjere reportedly told the friend they were also searching for Mashinge.
As the friend was leaving, he noticed a swarm of flies near the pit latrine and went to investigate. This prompted Hwenjere to flee the scene, but he was later apprehended by authorities.
In court, investigating officer Oreneetse Ditshego urged the judge to keep Hwenjere in custody due to the severity of the charges.
Ditshego emphasized the brutal nature of the crime, which has instilled fear and anger in the community. 
He also said forensic evidence had been sent for analysis and that postmortem results were pending, while witnesses were receiving trauma counselling. 
Hwenjere remained silent when given the opportunity to speak.

The newly-elected Botswana President Duma Boko announced the first batch of his Cabinet ministers on Monday morning.
Among the key appointments are Ndaba Gaolathe, who will serve as Minister of Finance and Vice President, and Dr. Stephen Modise, who has been appointed Minister of Health, along with his assistant Lawrence Ookeditse.
A new ministry, the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education, will be led by Nono Kgafela-Mokoka. Dr. Micus Chombombi has been appointed to head the Ministry of Lands and Agriculture, with Dr. Edwin Dikoloti serving as his deputy.
26-year-old Lesego Chombo, Miss Botswana 2022 and Miss World Africa 2024 will lead the Ministry of Youth and Gender Affairs.
Dr Phenyo Butale has been appointed as the new Minister of International Relations. Said Boko:

When asked how many Cabinet ministers he plans to appoint, the President responded, “I initially wanted 10, but after consultation with professionals both locally and internationally, we have decided on 18.”

Boko has yet to announce the new Minister of Mining, a particularly significant position given that Botswana is the world’s leading diamond producer by value.

Botswana’s new president, Duma Gideon Boko, wants undocumented Zimbabweans legalised by granting them temporary work and residence permits.
Speaking on the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c7v3l3zr63vo">BBC Africa Daily</a> podcast before his historic inauguration on Friday, Boko said Zimbabweans do jobs that would otherwise not get done.
Botswana is home to the world’s second-largest population of Zimbabweans fleeing their country’s economic crisis, and they are often met with resentment, leading to daily deportations.
The move may not be well received in the diamond-rich southern African nation, but President Boko, 54, who recently ousted the ruling party that had been in power for 58 years, sees it as a key part of his efforts to revive the economy.
He said managing the influx of thousands of Zimbabweans crossing through the long and porous border between the two countries has been a significant challenge. Said Boko:

They come in and are undocumented. Then their access to amenities is limited, if it is available at all, and what they then do is they live outside the law and they commit crimes – and this brings resentment.
So what we need to do is to formalise, have a proper arrangement that recognises that people from Zimbabwe are already here.

The exact number of Zimbabweans in Botswana is unclear, but thousands have been crossing the border regularly since Zimbabwe’s economy collapsed due to hyperinflation two decades ago. Many have also sought political asylum.
Available statistics show that Zimbabweans make up 98% of what are classified as “irregular migrants” in Botswana.
In response to a parliamentary inquiry earlier this year, a government minister revealed that between 2021 and 2023, 13,489 migrants were recorded, with 13,189 being Zimbabwean nationals.
Deportations of Zimbabweans are conducted daily by police stations across Botswana, targeting those without proper documentation or those involved in criminal activities.
They are often employed in low-wage jobs, primarily as domestic workers and farm labourers. Said Boko:

A lot of these workers from Zimbabwe perform tasks that the citizen finds unattractive… they do jobs that would otherwise not get done and so there’s no conflict there.
In any and every construction site in Botswana the majority of people with those skills are from Zimbabwe, so we need to do a twin programme of allowing them to come in and we utilise the skills that they have and in the process of utilising these skills we also engage in some sort of skills transfer.
We can’t stop people with skills from coming in when we don’t have the skills ourselves – we need to develop these skills and it takes time, so in the interregnum we need to have them come in properly, come in legally and be rewarded appropriately for the skills that they bring.

However, late last year, the government faced backlash after proposing that identity cards replace passports for travel between Botswana and Zimbabwe. The general sentiment was that this change would result in an influx of more Zimbabweans.

This warning comes in response to reports suggesting that some Batswana plan to launch attacks on Zimbabweans following a controversial campaign by ZANU PF members, led by Patrick Chinamasa, in support of the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) ahead of the October 30 harmonised elections.
President Mokgweetsi Masisi of Botswana, who is seeking reelection, is considered a close ally of Zimbabwe’s leader, Emmerson Mnangagwa.
In a statement issued on Friday, Mukonoweshuro reassured the Zimbabwean community that the Embassy has received commitments from the Botswana Police Services (BPS) to ensure the safety of all law-abiding Zimbabweans during this electoral period. Said Mukonoweshuro:

Former opposition Member of Parliament, Job Sikhala, has called on ZANU PF to stop meddling in the electoral processes of neighbouring countries.
He warned that such interference not only jeopardizes the stability of those nations but also puts Zimbabweans living there at risk.
Sikhala warned that ZANU PF’s actions could lead to serious repercussions for Zimbabwe’s relations with its neighbours and urged the party to respect the sovereignty and electoral integrity of other countries.

Botswana’s president Mokgweetsi Masisi has threatened to send 20,000 elephants to Germany. The threat followed proposals by Germany to restrict the import of hunting trophies.
Masisi found the proposals inconsiderate of the situation on the ground in Botswana, saying elephants are now too many, and trophy hunting helps the country earn money while also keeping communities safe.
He proposed that Germans themselves try living amoung the wild animals. 
Speaking to German publication Bild, Masisi said :“We would like to offer such a gift to Germany.” 
Said Masisi in part:

It is very easy to sit in Berlin and have an opinion about our affairs in Botswana. We are paying the price for preserving these animals for the world.
This is not a joke. 
Germans should live together with the animals, in the way you are trying to tell us to.
We would also like to make such an offer to the Federal Republic of Germany. We won’t take no for an answer.

Botswana currently has some 130,000 elephants, an increase caused by conservation initiatives. Germany is one of the largest importers of hunting trophies in the world, and conservation efforts such as restricting imports would hurt Botswana’s revenues. 
In 2014 Botswana banned trophy hunting, but following an explosion in elephant numbers and pressure from local communities affected by the animals, it revoked the ban in 2019.
Botswana has the largest population of elephants in the world, followed by Zimbabwe, which has about 100 000. In Zimbabwe, elephants kill close to 100 people every year.
This would not be the first time that Botswana has given its elephants to other countries. It has previously given 8 000 elephants to Angola, and has also offered Mozambique, to try bring the animal population down.

Botswana President Threatens To Send Germany 20 000 Elephants

Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi has warned Members of Parliament (MPs) against commotion incitement and discrimination against Zimbabweans as the two neighbouring countries ponder the use of national identity cards (IDs) to cross borders instead of passports.
According to <a href="https://www.mmegi.bw/news/masisi-warns-against-zim-xenophobic-comments/news">Mmegi</a>, Masisi made the remarks in Parliament, where he was responding to the Budget Speech.
Masisi told MPs to be careful not to discriminate against Zimbabweans. He said:

You didn’t say anything when we did this arrangement with Namibia, but just because it is Zimbabweans you are discriminating against them, you are belittling them, and you are xenophobic.
If we can check your phones now you will find that some of you have their numbers and have illegally hired them.

Masisi was responding to a comment from Francistown South MP, Wynter Mmolotsi, who voiced his opposition to the possibility of using IDs as travel documents for citizens of both countries.
Some Botswana Members of Parliament have accused the country’s government of failure to consult them after Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa unexpectedly announced the plans at the Kusi Ideas Festival in 20203.
Following the backlash, the government assured Batswana that there was no signed agreement between Botswana and Zimbabwe on the use of IDs to cross borders.

President Masisi Warns Batswana MPs Against Zimbabwe "Xenophobic" Comments

Botswana’s coalition of opposition parties has slammed the country’s electoral body for travelling to Zimbabwe to benchmark its election procedures, reported <a href="https://www.voanews.com/a/botswana-opposition-slams-electoral-body-for-benchmarking-in-zimbabwe-/7487587.html">VOA</a>.
In business, benchmarking is the process of measuring business performance against competitors and high-performing companies.
A delegation from Botswana’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) visited Zimbabwe from 13 to 14 February ahead of the country’s general election later this year.
Utloile Silaigwana, Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) chief elections officer, told journalists in Harare that Botswana’s Independent Electoral Commission’s focus was on “management of electoral activities and how to conduct elections.”
Sialigwana also said Botswana’s visit is an endorsement of ZEC’s conduct of the elections.
However, Ketlhalefile Motshegwa, spokesperson for the opposition Botswana National Front, expressed disappointment at the commission’s two-day trip to Zimbabwe. Said Motshegwa:

One would have expected the IEC to benchmark in more developed democracies and systems with effective electoral institutions as an indication that they want to achieve excellence in their mandate.
The mission of Botswana’s IEC benchmarking in Zimbabwe is simple: Just to learn how to rig an election.

Lawrence Ookeditse of the Botswana Patriotic Front said Zimbabwe cannot run credible elections. He said:

We know that Zimbabwe for the past two decades has not been in a position where they have run credible elections. The election has been stolen time after time.
We see a situation where in the middle of an electoral process, the IEC in Botswana says they are going to Zimbabwe to benchmark.
If you want to benchmark to run elections, you are not going to go to Zimbabwe.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, addressing Parliament on Tuesday, Botswana Vice President Slumber Tsogwane, said there was no need to disparage Zimbabwe. He said:
<blockquote>
It [Zimbabwe] is a sovereign state, and these people are our neighbours. Yes, some [election] observers might have said what they said, but this has been said about many [other] countries.
But we can’t come here and castigate Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe is a sovereign state, [which] is doing as well as any other country. If you have nothing to say good about Zimbabwe, just keep quiet.

Silaigwana said other electoral organisations from the region, including from Lesotho and Ethiopia, have visited to benchmark on conducting elections.
Zimbabwe’s 2023 general elections were criticised by international observers who said they fell short of international standards and were conducted in an atmosphere of intimidation and fear.

Botswana Opposition Criticises Electoral Commission For Emulating ZEC

A delegation from Botswana’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) visited Zimbabwe from 13 to 14 February on a benchmarking mission as that country prepares to hold its general elections this year.
<a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/botswana-electoral-body-to-tap-from-zecs-expertise/">The Herald</a> reported that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) will assist the IEC in the management of electoral activities as well as the conducting of elections.
IEC’s two-member delegation comprised Osupile Maroba, who is the chief public relations officer, and Malefho Gopolang, the policy development and voter education manager.
Speaking at a recent media conference in Harare. ZEC’s chief elections officer Utoile Silaigwana said:

A two-member delegation from the Independent Electoral Commission of the Republic of Botswana has visited the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission on a benchmarking mission in preparation for the October 2024 Botswana General Elections.
The benchmarking exercise will mainly focus on the management of electoral activities and the conduct of elections…
ZEC will also illustrate publicity activities such as its radio programmes, use of social media platforms and the website as well as rebranding initiatives to the visitors.

Silaigwana said the visit also served as an endorsement of Zimbabwe’s recent general elections held on 23 August 2023.

Botswana Independent Electoral Commission Officials Visit ZEC

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Thursday said that he had agreed with his Botswana counterpart President Mokgweetsi Masisi to scrap passport requirements and allow Zimbabweans and Batswana to move unhindered between the two countries.
Speaking during the fifth edition of the annual Kusi Ideas Festival in Gaborone, Botswana, Mnangagwa said the terms of the agreement will be worked out by officials from both countries. <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/botswana-zimbabwe-leaders-agree-passport-free-travel-mnangagwa/">ZimLive</a> quoted Mnangagwa as saying:
<blockquote>
I have been talking to my brother here (Masisi) after he was making a statement here and we have agreed, I can announce, that from now on we shall instruct our officials that there shall be no question of how to enter Zimbabwe, how to enter Botswana.
That should be cleared. The two of us have agreed, realising that we are Africans. We should be able to walk into Botswana, walk into Zambia and walk into Kenya. We agreed when we were sitting there that why should we restrict ourselves?
Somebody said in the past we were all living together, then the global north came and made boundaries, where the family’s kitchen became on the other side of the border, the bedroom on the other side of the border. So why should we continue to respect this? Let us open the borders among ourselves and move freely.

Speaking to Zimbabwean journalists after attending the Kusi Ideas Festival, Mnangagwa said the envisioned deal with Botswana would mean travellers only require their respective national identity documents to travel between the two countries. <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/zimbabwe-botswana-to-scrap-passports-for-travellers/">He said</a>:

We impose constraints on ourselves which are more colonial than they are patriotic, so we agreed that he (President Masisi) himself on his side and myself on my side are going to instruct the relevant departments to ease these constraints of movement of people between our two countries.
It should be enough for someone having an identity card to cross into Zimbabwe or cross into Botswana, so this is what we are going to do.
He has undertaken to talk to his ministers to facilitate that; I will do the same in Zimbabwe to make sure we facilitate the movement of Zimbabweans and Batswana between the two countries without any constraints except one’s ID (identity document).

In his keynote address at the Kusi Ideas Festival, Masisi said his government officials have commenced consultations to ensure that the passport-free dispensation with Zimbabwe becomes a reality. He said:

Our steps towards facilitation of the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area are being given impetus by policy action taken by some sister nations like Kenya, who have announced the intention to abolish visa requirements for Africans travelling to Kenya.
I guess speaking for ourselves, President Mnangagwa, the ball is in your court and mine. We shall talk. 
We, on our part, have since April this year initiated an even easier movement between ourselves and neighbouring Namibia, by which citizens of both nations can travel between the two countries using only their national identity cards as a travel document.
This has reduced the burden of acquisition of passports for travel to either country. We hope that with time this will become a feature of the subcontinent and eventually the continent as a whole. 
And yes, once again, President Mnangagwa, I am happy to tell you that I have begun consultations on my side; I wish you begin on yours so that next after Namibia will be a Zimbabwean ID holder travelling seamlessly to Botswana, and a Botswana citizen . . . travelling seamlessly to Zimbabwe.

Botswana has a population of 2.5 million and is one of Africa’s most stable countries.
In contrast, Zimbabwe’s population is above 16 million and the country has been in economic turmoil for more than two decades.
Botswana, like all of Zimbabwe’s neighbours, hosts a sizeable Zimbabwean migrant community and deports thousands of Zimbabweans annually for immigration offences.
Meanwhile, Botswana already signed a similar arrangement with Namibia. The two countries are accepting each other’s national identity cards for use in cross-border business and tourism travel for stays of up to 90 days.

Zimbabwe, Botswana Leaders Announce Plans To Scrap Passports For Travellers

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said Zimbabwe and Botswana have begun working on the modalities to scrap passport requirements to pave the way for the movement of people and goods between the two countries.
Mnangagwa was speaking during a Presidential panel discussion in Botswana at the Kusi Ideas Festival which is being co-hosted by the Nation Media Group of Kenya and the Government of Botswana, this Thursday.
He said he had agreed with his counterpart, President Mokgweetsi Masisi, to initiate the process in terms of the law. <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/passports-no-longer-required-when-travelling-between-zimbabwe-and-botswana/">The Chronicle</a> quoted Mnangagwa as saying:

We have agreed that from now on, we will instruct our officials so that there would be no question of how to enter Zimbabwe; and how to enter Botswana. That should be cleared.
The two of us have agreed because we are African. We should be able to walk into Botswana, walk into Zambia, walk into Kenya. Why should we restrict ourselves?

According to the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, the Kusi Ideas Festival is aimed at discussing challenges facing Africa, as well as possible solutions and innova­tions needed to promote inclusive and sustainable development.

The Botswana Football Association (BFA) posted a statement on its Facebook page announcing the 25 men’s Provisional Squad for the friendly match against Eswatini on Monday. Reads the statement:

The team is preparing for the upcoming FIFA 2026 World Cup African Qualifiers opener against Mozambique next month.
Botswana will play in Group G along with Algeria, Guinea, Uganda, Mozambique and Somalia for a place at the 2026 World Cup edition, which will be co-hosted by Canada, the United States of America, and Mexico.

According to the statement, the match between Botswana and Eswatini will be played on Monday, 16 October 2023 at the Lobatse Sports Complex.
By implication, Botswana will not play Zimbabwe on Saturday, 14 October as the Zebras will have to play two games in 48 hours in two different countries.
An official from the BFA earlier on Tuesday told <a href="https://www.soccer24.co.zw/2023/10/10/warriors-botswana-friendly-shrouded-in-uncertainity/">Soccer24</a> that he was not aware of the proposed match against Zimbabwe.
Meanwhile, all Castle Lager Premier Soccer League matchday 27 fixtures that were scheduled for this weekend have been postponed to 18 and 19 October. PSL said:

Zimbabwe-Botswana Friendly Match May Not Happen

The Warriors are set to host the Zebras of Botswana in an international friendly match on Saturday, 14 October 2023 at the National Sports Stadium in Harare.
In a statement, the ZIFA Normalisation Committee said the Warriors squad will be made up of both local and foreign-based players. ZIFA said:

Players will start arriving for camp on Wednesday.
This match is an integral part of the country’s preparations for matchdays 1 and 2 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers set for November 13 to 21.

The match kicks off at 3 PM Central African Time.

Warriors To Play Botswana On 14 October

The Zimbabwe Warriors suffered a 4-3 penalty shootout defeat against the Botswana Zebras in an Invitational Independence Cup friendly match played in Botswana. 
The match ended in a 1-1 draw during regular time, with Zimbabwe taking the lead through Obriel Chirinda’s goal in the 66th minute, and Botswana equalizing just a minute later through Lemogang Maswena.
During the penalty shootout, the Warriors missed two penalties, while Botswana missed one, giving them the victory.
The match was the first overseen by the newly appointed Warriors coach, Baltemar Brito. Despite the loss, Brito expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, praising their technical skills and quick adaptation to tactics. He remained optimistic about the future saying he would not read much into the loss.
This match was significant for Zimbabwe as it marked their second match after returning to international football after FIFA suspended the country in February 2022 due to government interference in the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA). The ban was lifted in July 2023. The first match upon their return was against Namibia on September 4th, coinciding with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s inauguration at the National Sports Stadium in Harare. The Warriors emerged victorious in a penalty shootout.
These matches serve as preparation for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers scheduled for November. Only locally-based players were called up for national duty in both games. The Warriors team typically consists of players based abroad, except for the COSAFA matches and CHAN matches.

Zimbabwe Loses To Botswana In A Friendly Match In Gaborone

Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi is reportedly mulling a proposal to allow Batswana and Zimbabweans to use national identity cards (IDs) for travel between the two countries.
Currently, citizens from both countries require valid passports to cross the border.
<a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/https-www-newzimbabwe-com-president-masisi-wants-to-scrap-passport-requirement-for-zimbabweans-entering-botswana/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> cited The Parrot newspaper as saying Masisi revealed that he will make the proposal over the use of ID cards for cross-border travel when he meets his Zimbabwe counterpart, President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Part of the reads:

Arguably, the majority of Zimbabweans who migrate to Botswana will be seeking better economic prospects while Batswana citizens mostly cross into Zimbabwe to seek tertiary education.
In February this year, Masisi and Namibian President, Hage Geingob signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to permit citizens of the two countries to use IDs to cross borders.

Botswana President Wants To Scrap Passport Requirement For Zimbabwean Travellers | Report

Botswana’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Sarah Sethabile Molosiwa, has urged citizens from the two countries to work with authorities to fight cross-border crimes so as not to jeorpadise the relationship between the two neighbours.
Cross-border crimes affecting Botswana and Zimbabwe include smuggling, border jumping, human trafficking and cattle rustling.
Speaking recently while addressing Ngoma villagers in Gwanda, Ambassador Molosiwa said:

Our Presidents address one another as brothers and that makes us brothers and sisters as citizens from the two countries.
Zimbabwe and Botswana have long-term economic, cultural, historical ties and this relationship started long back when we were still British colonies.

As we speak our Presidents are working day and night to strengthen the relationship between Botswana and Zimbabwe.

Botswana Ambassador Urges Citizens To Cooperate With Authorities

The Botswana Police Service has launched a manhunt for five armed men believed to be foreign nationals.
In a statement issued by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Dipheko Motube, this Monday, the manhunt follows a shootout in Gaborone on Sunday night.
Motube said one of the suspects was later arrested adding investigations are in progress. Said Motube:

Law enforcement officers in Gaborone have embarked on a manhunt of five (5) armed suspicious characters believed to be foreign nationals.
This follows a shoot-out between six (6) armed men and law enforcement officers at Block 8 location in Gaborone last night, which subsequently led to the arrest of one of the suspects.
Members of the public are therefore informed to be on the lookout and report any suspicious characters to the nearest Police Station or call emergency number 999.
They are also warned not to approach the suspected men who are armed and dangerous.
Investigations are continuing.

Botswana Police Launch Manhunt For Five Armed Foreign Nationals

A Zimbabwean national serving jail time at a prison in Maun, Botswana was killed by his Motswana cellmate after a fight ensued between the two in the dead of night on Sunday.
The Botswana Prison Service (BPS) has identified the now-deceased Zimbabwean national as Michael Phuti (31).
Phuti’s known address in Botswana is Magapatona Ward in Tutume Village, which is about 50km from the Zimbabwe border.
BPS spokesperson Senior Superintendent Oagile Kojane said the two inmates fought at around 11 PM. He added:

The incident resulted in one inmate being seriously injured and [he] was immediately rushed to the Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital, where he, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries.

The suspect has been identified as Osego Mosetlhane, 36, of Kgaphamadi Wadi in Gantsi.

Jailed Zimbabwean Man Killed In Botswana Prison Fight

Botswana’s former President Ian Khama has filed an urgent court application seeking the cancellation of an arrest warrant issued against him by a magistrate last week.
Khama’s father, the late Sir Seretse Khama was Botswana’s founding president.
He quit the ruling Botswana Democratic Party in 2019 following a dispute with his successor and incumbent President Mokgweetsi Masisi.
The warrant was issued after Khama, who has been living in South Africa since November 2021, failed to appear in court to answer charges laid against him in April.
The charges include unlawful possession of a firearm, receiving stolen property and procuring the registration of a firearm by false pretense.
The former head of State has asked the high court in Gaborone for the warrant against him to be set aside or for its execution to be stayed, citing a lack of evidence for his prosecution. He said in his court filing:

The warrant of arrest threatens my right to liberty in circumstances where I have committed no crime…should this warrant of arrest not be stayed or set aside…I would suffer irreparable harm which cannot be compensated for in any form.

Former Botswana President Files Urgent Application To Strike Down Arrest Warrant

Authorities in Botswana have issued a warrant for former president Ian Khama’s arrest.
Khama is facing more than a dozen criminal charges, including illegally possessing five firearms, in Botswana, according to the warrant seen by Pindula News.
He was summoned to appear in court there in April but he did not show up.
The warrant, stamped and signed by a regional magistrate, Mareledi Dipate, orders that Mr Khama should be arrested on sight. 
The 69-year-old <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/ian-khama-refutes-reports-he-fled-botswana-to-south-africa/">left his home country in November last year</a> and has been residing in neighbouring South Africa.
The warrant states that there are reasonable grounds of suspicion against Khama that he committed the crimes for which he’s been charged and if spotted, it calls for him to be apprehended immediately and brought before the Broadhurst regional court “to be examined and to answer to the said information and to be further dealt with according to the law”. Court Issues Warrant Of Arrest For Botswana's Former President Ian Khama

A 30-year-old man believed to have been residing in Botswana illegally killed himself by hanging from the ceiling of his rented accommodation in Ditladi village last week.
According to Tonota Station Commander, Oteng Ngada, before taking his own life, the man reportedly told his friends that he was contemplating suicide saying life had become difficult for him. Said Ngada:

He then went inside his room around 1200 hours and his landlord noticed his house was dark around 2050 hours.
After knocking several times without an answer, the landlord entered only to find him hanging from the house rafters.
His body is still at Nyangabgwe mortuary, with the Post-Mortem set for Thursday.

"Broke" Zimbabwean Man Commits Suicide In Botswana

Botswana on Wednesday 28 September 2022 lifted all remaining Covid-19 restrictions including a requirement for travellers to provide proof of vaccination or PCR tests at its borders.
The southern African country has recorded 2 789 deaths and 326 000 infections since the respiratory illness was first detected in early 2020, according to the John Hopkins University.
In a statement, Botswana’s health ministry said citizens should use their discretion “to still follow some protocols, as this will assist them in safeguarding their health.” Reads the statement seen by <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/2022/09/botswana-lifts-all-covid-19-restrictions-including-for-travellers/">ZimLive.com</a>:

Botswana encouraged its citizens to get vaccinated “so that they remain safe.
Botswana follows regional countries South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia and Namibia which have lifted all Covid-19 restrictions.
<h2>Update on Zimbabwe:</h2>
Zimbabwe still maintains that masks are mandatory except for those who have taken at least three shots of COVID-19 vaccines. 
Wearing facemasks remains mandatory in indoor public places and on public transport.
Vaccinated travellers must show proof of a completed vaccination scheme. 
Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated travellers must present a negative PCR test result taken less than 48 hours before their scheduled arrival.

Botswana Lifts All COVID-19 Restrictions, Even For Visiting Foreign Nationals

Namibia and Botswana have agreed to lift passport requirements on their border, a first for southern Africa.
Namibian president Hage Geingob, speaking in the Botswana capital Gaborone on Friday, said nationals of the two countries would only need to produce IDs to move between the two countries. 
Geingob said, speaking during the inaugural Botswana-Namibia bi-national commission:

Our two countries not only share a common border, but also a common people and heritage. A symbiotic and inter-dependent relationship exists along our common borders.
Therefore, I call on our senior officials to fast-track the implementation of the usage of Identity Documents (IDs) as travel documents between the two countries, without delay.

The development came after President Geingob’s meeting with President Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi, 
Meanwhile, the development has resulted in criticism aimed at neighbouring Zimbabwe with award-winning journalist, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Hopewell_Chin%27ono">Hopewell Chin’ono</a> saying Botswana has been meeting Zimbabwean leaders but nothing tangible has materialised. In a Facebook post seen by Pindula News, Chin’ono said:

Namibia, Botswana Lift Passport Requirements On Their Border

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Fastjet_Zimbabwe#International">Fastjet Zimbabwe</a> has launched its inaugural flight from Zimbabwe’s tourism capital Victoria Falls to Maun in Botswana. The new service route will operate four times a week Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday on an Embraer ER145 aircraft.
This follows another launch in March of a direct flight between Victoria Falls and Mpumalanga, in South Africa.
The new flight arrangement will provide the much-needed scheduled connectivity between Victoria Falls and Maun allowing visitors ease of travel when exploring the region’s top attractions. Said Nunurai Ndawana, fastjet Zimbabwe spokesperson:

Fastjet Zimbabwe’s chief commercial officer, Vivian Ruwuya comments added that Victoria Falls remained one of the airline’s strategic destinations and this route adds to fastjet’s international presence in the region. Ruwuya added:

Botswana Civil Aviation Authority chief executive officer Bao Mosinyi said the development comes when travel had gone down through the world. Mosinyi added:

Fastjet Zimbabwe Launches Victoria Falls To Maun, Botswana Flights

<h2>Full statement by the Government of Botswana on the discovery of a new COVID-19 variant in that country.</h2>

The Ministry of Health and Wellness wishes to inform members of the public that our scientists have been investigating new coronavirus mutations detected in Botswana.
On further analysis and verification, these mutations which have been so far detected in four people in Botswana, have been noted as a new sub-lineage of the Omicron variant.
The preliminary finding of this new sublineage in Botswana has been designated as Omicron BA.4 and BA.5.
The four cases are currently being monitored to gather more information about the potential impact on disease spread and severity.
The foursome comprises residents and non-residents aged between 30 and 50 years, two being non-residents who had a recent travel history.
The quartet is fully vaccinated and has been experiencing only mild symptoms. The same new sublineage has also been reported in three other countries.
The ministry, in collaboration with other stakeholders including regional and international bodies, is still studying the properties and characteristics of this Omicron sub lineage in order to gain more data and knowledge about its behaviour.
So far, no conclusions have been made yet, in relation to whether or not, the sub-lineage is more deadly and more transmissible than the known Omicron variant.
Similarly, investigations on whether COVID-19 vaccines are effective against this sublineage are ongoing.
Although it is common for viruses to mutate as they spread from one person to another, some mutations become responsible for high infection rates and cause severe disease.
This would be due to among others, changes in virus behaviour and characteristics. When this happens, the new variant could be determined as a variant of concern (VOC). 
These new specific changes are always subject to further investigations and verification with the world scientific community.
The ministry awaits further guidance from World Health Organization (WHO) on how to manage its transmission.
At the moment, the ministry calls upon members of the public, not to panic but to continue being vigilant.
The public is further encouraged to vaccinate and take their booster shots, if eligible. 
This is important because in the event new variants of COVID-19 emerge and spark a new wave of infections (fifth wave), the impact may be more severe for the unvaccinated.
The ministry will keep the public informed about any new developments in this matter.

Botswana Detects New COVID-19 Variant | Full Statement

The Botswana Ministry of Health and Wellness on Monday announced the discovery of a new coronavirus variant in fully vaccinated people.
The Permanent Secretary in the Botswana Ministry of Health and Wellness, Christopher Nyanga, said the mutations have been noted as a new sub-lineage of the Omicron variant.

New COVID-19 Variant Detected In Botswana

Musician Killer T has apologised to his fans within and outside Zimbabwe after he failed to travel to Botswana for a scheduled show last Saturday despite receiving the full US$2 000 payment for the performance in advance.
In a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/100044440179947/posts/530259918465343/">Facebook post</a>, the Zimdancehall chanted said he failed to travel to Botswana for the show due to circumstances beyond his control but vowed that “it will not happen again”. Killer T Apologises Over His Failure To Pitch Up For Botswana Event

Award-winning Zimdancehall artist Killer T allegedly failed to show up for a show in Botswana where he was supposed to perform on Saturday.
Killer T had done an endorsement video and notified his fans he would be in Botswana on 2 April to perform at Big Five lodge.
H-Metro reported sources as saying the musician told his Botswana contacts that he was on his way to the show and fans filled up the venue.
Violence reportedly broke up at the venue when Killer T did not show up and some bouncers were stabbed while the venue was damaged during the melee.
One of the show coordinators, Boss Lazzy, accused Killer T of unprofessionalism and soiling their name. He said fans had paid cash P150 and P300 VIP. Said Boss Lazzy:

We engaged Killer T for the show, he was supposed to arrive here on Friday.
He didn’t make it and promised to come on Saturday, after saying he missed his flight.
We gave him US$2 000 after he had said haadi zvemahalf (he doesn’t want to be paid in instalments). 
Fans then heard that he had not come and violence erupted resulting in bouncers being stabbed.
DJ Prosper Taks, who was performing at the show, also confirmed the incident. He said:
Killer T akatikuvadzisa, (he got us into trouble) things were damaged and fans were injured, bottles were thrown.
Bouncers escaped from the venue with stab wounds.
I ran away from the scene after removing my instruments, some speakers were taken, and lights were destroyed.
I don’t think Zimbos will do a show again here because the venue owners are not happy.
Fans were waiting for him but he did not come and we played other songs until 2 AM.
People then realised he was not coming, we tried playing his songs but Killer T haana kubatika.
People are admitted in the hospital right now, venue yakaita marara.
Anga azadza but he disappointed. I had to play his songs kuti vanhu vadzikame until 2 AM tatoona kuti amahwani ayo, ndopandakazotiza vakukwira pastage.

Killer T In No-show At Botswana Event Despite Receiving US$2 000 Full Payment

Zimbabwe and Botswana are set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding, that will, among other things, allow prisoner exchange where Zimbabwean nationals serving in Botswana jails to complete their sentences back home if they so wish, and vice versa.
There are about 400 Zimbabweans serving in different jails in Botswana while about 10 Botswana nationals are serving in Zimbabwe.
This was revealed by Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) Commissioner-General Moses Chihobvu on Saturday.
Chihobvu was speaking in an interview with State media after addressing ZPCS recruits and the visiting Commissioner of the Botswana Prison Service Dinah Marathe and her delegation at Ntabazinduna Training Depot. He said:

I feel very happy about this exchange programme that we are going to introduce.
I wish we could speed up the Memorandum of Understanding because it is going to benefit us as the correctional services in Zimbabwe and also the Botswana Prison Service because we are going to have exchange programmes and try to modify some of the training services that we are going to be doing.
The MOU includes the transfer of inmates from either country, we are looking at our inmates who are Zimbabweans, if they want to finish their sentence here in Zimbabwe, they can be transferred.
If they do not want to, they will serve in Botswana.

Commissioner Marathe together with her seven-member delegation has toured various prisons in the country and was on Sunday expected to visit Khami Maximum Prison and Anju Prison farm in Nyamandlovu.
