Grain Millers Association (GMAZ) has said that Zimbabwe could run out of bread in a week after flour stocks dwindled due to the country’s failure to pay for imported wheat.
This was revealed in a letter written by GMAZ general manager Lynette Veremu to the National Bakers Association of Zimbabwe (NBAZ). Veremu told NBAZ, Zimbabwe  cannot pay for 55,000 tonnes of wheat in bonded warehouses in Mozambique and Harare. Part of the letter reads:
<blockquote>We regret to advise that the current stocks for foreign wheat for bread flour have depleted to 5,800 tonnes and … we are left with less than eight days of national bread flour supplies.</blockquote>
When contacted by Reuters, GMAZ spokesman Garikai Chaunza confirmed the letter, saying “this is the situation we are faced with”. Reuters could not reach Ngoni Mazango, the president of the bakers’ group for a comment. Reuters reports Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor John Mangudya did not answer calls to his mobile phone.

Zimbabwe To Run Out Of Bread In A Week- Millers

The National Bakers Association of Zimbabwe (NBAZ) has attributed the shortages of bread on the market to the lack of foreign currency to import wheat to make flour.
NBAZ president Mr Ngoni Mazango said they had submitted applications for foreign currency to Government and were waiting for it to release the money. Said Mazango:
<blockquote>The Government has promised us an intervention on foreign currency which we require as bakers which was going to account for 80 percent of our forex requirement but in the month of November we only received 30 percent of the 80 percent. In December we received 27 percent of the 80 percent and this January we received 9 percent. We are grateful for the gesture but it is not enough.</blockquote>

Foreign Currency Shortages Behind Bread Shortages

Government made a $2,5 million payment after Holbud threatened to cut off the deal citing Harare’s delay in meeting its financial obligations.
Holbud delivered 30 000 metric tonnes of wheat worth $12,2 million. The UK based supplier last week raised concern over Zimbabwe’s delay in paying for the wheat that docked in Beira nine days ago. Full electronic payment of the bulk consignment was expected on arrival and the wheat has been attracting $17 000 storage charges daily.
Minister of Industry and Commerce Mangaliso Ndlovu yesterday confirmed the payment, but said Government was faced with a number of priorities in foreign currency allocation. He said wheat is not a primary concern at the moment. Said Ndlovu:
<blockquote>With the wheat stocks that we have at GMB, surely you can agree with me that this (new consignment) is not an immediate priority. But our wheat stocks do not last us the whole year. We will assist the importers when foreign currency is available, but it should be noted that we have other competing needs.</blockquote>

Govt Releases $2,5 Million For Wheat Following Threats By Supplier To Cut Off Deal

As bakers struggle to secure flour amid rising operational costs and the shortage of foreign currency to buy essential raw materials and equipment, the price of bread is set to go up today it is believed.
Simba Brands confectionery’s letter to retail outlets reads:
<blockquote>This letter serves to inform you that the price list for Innscor Africa Bread Company Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd Bakers Inn bread effective Saturday September 15, 2018 will be as follows: Standard loaf all variants per unit, wholesale delivered price $1 (one dollar); recommended retail price $1,10 (one dollar and ten cents)</blockquote>

Price of bread is set to go up today

The Grain Millers’ Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) chairman Tafadzwa Musarara has said that wheat shipments are expected to start coming into the country from Monday. This comes at a time when the millers have warned of imminent bread shortages following a drastic decrease in the country’s wheat levels. Bread production has been lower in the last few days and Bakers Inn has advised customers that the price of bread is going up by 10 percent starting on Saturday (tomorrow). Addressing the media on Thursday, Musarara said,
<blockquote>Already, GMAZ had successfully negotiated for the movement of 30 000 tonnes of wheat to Beira on a pre-payment arrangement. The final payment on this shipment will be paid tomorrow (today) by the Reserve Bank and the shipment of wheat to Zimbabwe will commence immediately thereafter both by rail and road. We aim to deploy 100 trucks to complement rail.</blockquote>

Wheat Shipments Expected Next Week As Bread Shortages Loom

The price of bread is set to increase by 10 cents starting this Saturday according to a memo from Innscor memo to Food World.
This comes after the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) warned that the country faces an imminent shortage of bread due to low levels of wheat. Innscor are the makers of Bakers Inn Bread.
