The United States Embassy in Harare has reiterated that sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe are not the cause of the Southern African country’s problems.
This comes as Zimbabwe and all other SADC countries are campaigning for the removal of sanctions on Zimbabwe saying they are hurting the general populace.
SADC set 25 October as the Anti-Sanctions day. 
The U.S., however, says the issues in Zimbabwe are mainly a result of bad governance. Said the embassy on Monday:

The United States and its allies in the West, including the United Kingdom and the European, imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe at the turn of the millennium citing gross human violation during the fast-track land reform programme.
Zimbabwe claims the sanctions were a retaliation to the Robert Mugabe government’s dispossession of white farmers of their land.

It's Not Sanctions Behind Zimbabwe's Economic Challenges - U.S.

Presidential spokesperson George Charamba has dismissed United States (US) ambassador to Zimbabwe Brian Nichols’s remarks on his purported desire to promote American businesses and their investments in the country.
Charamba said Zimbabweans should not be excited over what Nichols said as he is trying to sound good on the eve of his departure.
Posting on Twitter, Charamba revealed that Nichols is set to leave Zimbabwe in the next few weeks for a new posting hence there is no benevolence he can show towards Harare. <a href="https://twitter.com/Jamwanda2/status/1399250750115651585" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Said Charamba:</a>
<blockquote>The current US Ambassador, Brian Nichols, is set to leave the country for a new posting in a few weeks time.
He seeks to look and sound good on eve of his departure, hoping to overwrite the stupendous bad he did us over his serving years. We should not get too excited by his statements of fawned goodwill.
Zimbabwe must press on with her programmes under conditions of illegal American sanctions so she secures her growth IN SPITE OF, not BECAUSE OF, so-called American benevolence. We were, are, continue to be wronged.
There is no benevolence or olive branch that can be shown us, as claimed by some sections in the media.

Speaking during the Post Reconstruction Trade Mission to Mozambique and Zimbabwe meeting held virtually Monday last week,<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/05/26/us-ambassador-pledges-support-for-companies-investing-in-zimbabwe/" rel="noopener" target="_blank"> Nichols said he will prioritise</a> the promotion of American investment in Zimbabwe.
He also described Zimbabwe as a country with “incredible potential” endowed by “a wonderful educated, engaging English speaking workforce”.

The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), donated 20 brand-new, state-of-the-art ventilators to Solidarity Trust Zimbabwe to help Zimbabweans fight COVID-19.
Speaking during the handover of the ventilators, United States ambassador to Zimbabwe, Brian A. Nichols said:
<blockquote>Too many Zimbabweans have already passed away due to COVID-19. We express our deepest condolences to all who have lost their loved ones.
We are pleased to deliver 20 ventilators, which complement Zimbabwe’s efforts to combat COVID-19 and demonstrate the United States’ ongoing commitment to supporting the people of Zimbabwe through this crisis and beyond.</blockquote>
The ventilators, produced in the United States, reflect cutting-edge technology customized to Zimbabwe’s needs and requirements.
Their compact and easily deployable design will provide medical professionals with flexibility in treating patients affected by the virus.
The ventilators may prove lifesaving for individuals who develop respiratory complications due to COVID-19.
In addition to the ventilators, USAID provided a tailored package of support, including installation, training for healthcare workers, and a one-year service agreement for regular maintenance.
This donation brings the United States’ response to the pandemic in Zimbabwe to over $20 million.

United States Donates 20 Ventilators To Zimbabwe To Respond To COVID-19

An opinionist writing for The Standard has said the arrest of Tendai Biti a few weeks ago after he allegedly called someone an idiot exposes the Us and the British’s hypocrisy and clearly shows that they support the opposition and they are on their side.
The opinionist further said the American ambassador is always telling the government what to do which according to the columnist signifies internal interference:

<blockquote>The United States embassy in Harare on December 5 expressed concern over the arrest of MDC Alliance vice-president Tendai Biti in connection with an alleged assault of a Russian businesswoman Tatiana Aleshina.
Biti was arrested on December 4 for allegedly calling Aleshina an “idiot” and exchanging harsh words with her.
After spending a night in custody the following day he was released on $10 000 bail.
Biti was remanded to January 18 for trial after prosecutors consented to his application for bail.
In principle, this event can be described as an ordinary case.
An everyday quarrel, which is resolved in court, and a perpetrator and the degree of his or her punishment are determined by the court, regardless of a position of a perpetrator in society.
Rather, it would have happened to any other person. And it is unlikely that this story would be covered in the news.
Aleshina has never worked for the government.
The lawsuit filed by her against Biti is a particular case and lies in the civil law field and in no way relates to the political struggle between Zanu PF and MDC-Alliance .
But the US embassy took advantage of this case and took to Twitter to say that it was watching very closely the Biti court case as it was an affront to democracy.
“A true democracy leaves no space for arbitrary arrests of opposition political figures. We will watch the developments closely in Tendai Biti’s case,” the US embassy tweeted.
The same sentiments were also echoed the same day by the UK House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee.
“The Foreign Affairs Committee will be watching this case in Zimbabwe closely as well,” it said.
The way the Americans and the British reacted quickly and angrily to the ordinary incident with a member of the MDC-Alliance confirms that they are completely on the side of the opposition and support it.
And external support for the opposition in all countries, including the United States and Great Britain, is viewed as interference in internal affairs.
But, according to Washington and London, this applies to all other countries, but not America and England.
They can just do whatever they want. After all, they are the mainstays of democracy and the rule of law.
United States ambassador to Zimbabwe, Brian Nichols, has previously intervened in the internal affairs of Zimbabwe.
He uses his diplomatic post not to establish and develop bilateral relations, but to accuse and denigrate the government of Zimbabwe.
From Nichols, one constantly hears instructions of what Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his leadership should do.
So in October, Nichols told VOA Zimbabwe Service: “The Sadc anti-sanctions campaign, orchestrated by the government of Zimbabwe, is really an effort to distract the people of Zimbabwe from the real causes of Zimbabwe’s profound problems.
“The government of Zimbabwe would be better served by focusing on its efforts on implementing reforms that it campaigned on, that is to say deepening democracy, combating corruption, increasing respect for human rights and opening up the economy for transparent trade and investment.”
Imagine if the Zimbabwe ambassador to the United States made such comments about his hosts.
For example, about the lack of transparency and irregularities in the election of the American president.
Or police brutality in breaking up demonstrations. Ongoing constant killings by police of civilians.
The ineffectiveness of the American health care system, which led to the dire consequences of the Covid -19 pandemic.
And a lot of other things.
If the ambassador of Zimbabwe touched on the internal problems of the United States, which has much more of them than in Zimbabwe, he would be immediately accused of interfering in the internal affairs of America.
But Nichols, believes he has every right to tell Zimbabweans how to live.
After all, he is sincerely convinced that he is a representative of the highest American nation, which should rule and rules the whole world.
At the same time, the United States, European Union and United Kingdom vigorously defend the sanctions imposed by them against Zimbabwe.
They constantly claim that they are directed not against the people of Zimbabwe, but against those, who violate the foundations of democracy and human rights.</blockquote>

The 2020 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange has observed that the number of Zimbabwean students studying in the United States increased by 2.5 percent to 1 377 students in the 2019-20 academic year.
Speaking on the report, United States Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Brian Nichols said the increase signified the strong bond between the two states. He said:
<blockquote>The increasing number of Zimbabwean students choosing the United States signals the strong bond between our two peoples.  These students enroll in U.S. universities and colleges to gain professional skills that will serve them well in Zimbabwe.
International education allows young people to acquire the cultural competency and critical thinking tools sought by employers around the world.  The U.S. government continues to support Zimbabweans who take part in various exchange and education programs, demonstrating our commitment to empowering young Zimbabweans.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe remains the 6th leading country of origin for students in the United States from sub-Saharan Africa.
Zimbabweans study in the United States primarily at the undergraduate level with 52 percent enrolled at that level in 2019-20, 27.5 percent at the graduate level, and 19 percent pursuing optional practical training.
The number could be higher were it not of a lack of financial resources one requires to study in the USA.
Many Zimbabweans have since the turn of the millennium preferred foreign learning institutions over local ones whose ratings were continuously dropping.

No. Of Zim Students Enrolling With US Colleges Rises

United States ambassador to Zimbabwe Brian Nichols has applauded the Zimbabwean government for reversing a decision to permit Chinese firms to explore for coal in the world-famous Hwange National Park.
The mining activities in the park had sparked controversy with the citizenry and other stakeholders questioning how the government had awarded the permit in the first place.
Nichols said the reversal of the deal was very significant in the promotion of sustainable national development. He said:
<blockquote>This was a wise decision for sustainable development and a significant step to safeguard Zimbabwe’s protected areas and ensure wildlife conservation. The decision acknowledges that transparency is vital to create an open and fair business environment in Zimbabwe, to nurture homegrown enterprises, and to attract foreign investment.
Equally important, the reversal responded appropriately to Zimbabwean citizens who had exercised their constitutionally protected rights and demonstrated the high risks of not following the country’s established environmental compliance procedures, including serious ecological degradation of wildlife habitats that bring in valuable and sustainable international tourism revenue. Democracy in action means not just holding elections but responding to citizens’ concerns between elections as well.</blockquote>
He added that national parks should be jealously guarded mainly because they provide valuable revenue to the national parks authority, the tourism industry, and most importantly, to the communities that live around them.
Nichols also noted that the importance of these protected places goes beyond just revenue as they “represent a magnificent piece of Zimbabweans’ heritage for all to cherish and enjoy.”

US Hails Zim For Blocking Chinese Firms Mining In Park

The United Kingdom Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mrs. Melanie Robinson has said sanctions cannot be blamed for Zimbabwe’s woes. Robinson made reference to Zimbabwe’s lack of freedom of speech and said corruption was the main reason why investors would not choose Zimbabwe:
<blockquote>It’s not sanctions, it’s corruption that drives away investors and leaves teachers, doctors, nurses and services struggling. Zimbabweans must be free to expose corruption, rights abuses and see perpetrators face justice,</blockquote>
Meanwhile, US Ambassador to Zimbabwe Ambassador Brian Nichols called the sanctions protest a hollow event that doesn’t serve the interest of the Zimbabwean people and  said the government must put more effort in reforming:
<blockquote>I think if the government of Zimbabwe put the energy that they put into organising these types of events and generating statements from other Sadc members into pursuing the reform agenda the better.
The government of Zimbabwe campaigned and talked about reform three years ago in November 2017 and 2018 at the inauguration of President Mnangagwa.
If they have events on the reform agenda and the conditions, the restrictive measures that the US, the EU, Canada, Australia and others have imposed would be met.
I think this is a hollow exercise in that it does not solve the interests of the people of Zimbabwe.</blockquote>

It’s Not Sanctions, It’s Corruption That Has Brought Zimbabwe To Where It Is - UK

The United States ambassador to Zimbabwe, Brian Nichols has met officials in the Zimbabwean government to encourage them to respect workers’ rights.
This comes amid workers’ dissatisfaction over poor salaries and working conditions, a situation that has seen teachers refusing to go back to work when schools reopened on 28 September.
Workers have since last year embarked on a spate of demonstrations to register their displeasure in how the government responds to their grievances.
In a statement that was issued after meeting Labour Minister Paul Mavima, US ambassador Brian Nichols said:
<blockquote>I met with Labour Minister Mavima to encourage government and labour leaders to negotiate in good faith.
Respect for workers’ rights will help create a more prosperous Zimbabwe. We look forward to working with the ministry to eliminate child labour in tobacco and sugar cane farming. Children need education to thrive.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has urged its members to brace for a “general strike” aimed at forcing the government to restore their 2018 salaries.
The call was made after the government had made a 40percent increase to the cost of living adjustment meant to cushion workers from the adverse effects of the deepening economic crisis.

US Ambassador Meets Govt Over Workers' Rights

The ruling party has threatened to expel US Ambassador Brian Nichols as it is accusing him of interfering with local politics, All Africa reports. Patrick Chinamasa said this during a press conference in Harare this afternoon.
Chinamasa laid into Ambassador Nichols and said he should be ashamed of himself and that African Americans were not treated well in America hence he didn’t have the right to talk about human rights abuses in Zimbabwe and said:
<blockquote>I want to warn them (foreign diplomats) that it is high time to know that Zimbabwe is a sovereign Republic and we are a full sovereign state under the Montevideo Convention. The US ambassador whom I am told is African-American, must be totally ashamed of himself.
What has the United States has to offer in terms of values and human rights observance when his own African American people are treated like rats in full view of world media and he remains an Uncle Tom used to propagate values which by themselves they do not practice on their own people</blockquote>
He, later on, said the ruling party but not the government since he cannot speak on behalf of the government would not hesitate to expel him if he doesn’t heed to their warning before calling him a thug and said:
<blockquote>He continues to engage in acts of undermining this Republic and if he does so, if he continues engaging in acts of undermining the Republic mobilizing and funding disturbances coordinating violence and training insurgency our leadership will not hesitate to give him his marching orders.
Diplomats should not behave like thugs and Brian Nichols is a thug. We remind Nichols that he is not a super Diplomat in this country. There are several Diplomats seconded to this republic from African Union countries and the world over. They have never masqueraded and pretended to be our prefects as Mr Nichols is doing. We have nothing to learn from the United States or from countries which impose sanctions</blockquote>
It is still not clear, when, how and where the US ambassador has interfered with local politics. However, the embassy has been from time to time pointed out human right abuses that bedevil the country and target mainly opposition party members.
It is still not clear how this attack will affect relations between Harare and Washington. Ambassador Nichols is yet to respond to the ruling party’s threats.

The US Ambassador Must Be Ashamed Of Himself - Chinamasa Tears Into Ambassador Brian Nichols, Calls Him A Thug And Threatens To Expel Him

<blockquote>Blessed with abundant mineral resources, rich farmlands, ideal weather, stunning national parks, and a well-educated, industrious people, Zimbabwe should be the economic powerhouse and the breadbasket of southern Africa, and even more popular as a tourist destination and business investment opportunity, as it once was.
What then, is holding Zimbabwe back?  It’s not sanctions.  There are only 141 Zimbabwean people and companies on the U.S. sanctions’ list.  That’s right, just 141, in a country of 16 million.  They are on the list for good reason.  These are people who have engaged in corruption, committed human rights abuses, and undermined Zimbabwe’s democratic process.  Blaming sanctions is a convenient scapegoat to distract the public from the real reasons behind Zimbabwe’s economic challenges – corruption, economic mismanagement, and failure to respect human rights and uphold the rule of law.
There is no U.S. trade embargo on Zimbabwe.  American companies are interested in investing in Zimbabwe but are deterred by the massive levels of corruption, economic uncertainty, and weak rule of law.  So, investors turn to other promising opportunities in the region and wait for the country to embrace the political and economic reforms that would make it a more attractive destination.
The greatest sanctions on Zimbabwe are the limitations the country imposes on itself.  Zimbabwe is ranked 160 out of 175 nations on Transparency International’s corruption list.  Zimbabwe loses more than US$1 billion per year to corruption.  That’s huge compared to the size of Zimbabwe’s entire economy – around US$26 billion.  The government says fighting corruption is a priority but have government and government-connected perpetrators been held accountable?  No.  If the country’s laws were evenly applied and enforced, government coffers would be full and the economy would be humming; tax revenue and foreign exchange would not leak from the treasury, and government would recover some of the money that has made a privileged few extremely wealthy.  It’s not sanctions, it’s corruption.
The most conspicuous example is the more than US$2.8 billion missing from command agricultural subsidies.  Who has benefited?  Where is the accountability?  Up to 50 percent of the population faces food insecurity and hospitals lack basic supplies, life-saving medicine, and medical equipment.  The money missing from the agricultural subsidies could help many Zimbabweans in need.  The government should be working to get this money back into its coffers.  It’s not sanctions, it’s graft.
An American firm won the tender for the construction of the Dema Power plant in 2016, but the government cancelled the contract and awarded it to Sakunda Holdings, which had not even placed a bid.  This type of corruption damages Zimbabwe’s reputation and drives away investors who want to be sure the rules apply to everyone.  It’s not sanctions, it’s dishonest dealings.  The Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) is unable to account for US$25 million.  How many roads could ZINARA have repaired with this money?  How much clean water could have been provided?  It’s not sanctions, it’s stunning mismanagement.
The Zimbabwe Electricity Distribution Company (ZETDC), a subsidiary of Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA), paid US$4.9 million to Pito Investments for transformers in 2010.  The transformers were never delivered.  Similarly, the Zimbabwe Power Company paid 196,064 South African rand to York Investments for gas that was never delivered, and US$67,000 for coal that was never delivered.  Corruption is at the heart of why Zimbabweans are suffering through prolonged power outages.  It’s not sanctions, it’s a betrayal of the public trust.
The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) paid US$3.1 million for a printing machine in 2016.  ZIMSEC then failed to pay a balance of US$1.3 million, which delayed the machine’s delivery and commissioning.  As a result, ZIMSEC had to later pay approximately US $2.2 million to outsource the printing of examinations in 2017.  How many textbooks or computers could the Ministry of Education have purchased with the lost US$2.2 million and funds tied up in an incomplete purchase?  It’s not sanctions; it’s dereliction of duty.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe, which the auditor’s report described as insolvent, paid for furniture at the JM Nkomo International Airport in Bulawayo that was never delivered.
The list goes on. 
The pattern is clear.
The government allocates taxpayer funds for goods and services that are never delivered because the very same funds are disbursed into someone’s private account.  There are people getting rich, many of them Zimbabwe’s political elites, as the economy continues to deteriorate around them and the Zimbabwean people suffer from crippling shortages of food, electricity, clean water, and medicine.  It’s not sanctions, it’s unmitigated greed.
Seventeen people died during mass protests in January.  There were 17 reports of rape or sexual assault and police arrested more than 1,000 people in dragnet arrests in January and February.  All of these reports allege police or military officers were the offenders.  It’s not sanctions, it’s state-sanctioned violence.
The United States wants Zimbabwe to succeed.  Since 1980, the United States has contributed US$3.2 billion in assistance to the Zimbabwean people, and is the country’s largest bilateral donor in health and humanitarian assistance to the Zimbabwean population.  We will continue to support the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in Zimbabwe, which has brought the country to the cusp of HIV epidemic control, despite the aforementioned challenges.  Thanks to U.S. government investments in PEPFAR and the Global Fund, over 1.1 million Zimbabweans are on life-saving HIV treatment.  Our embassy will continue to work with partners in Zimbabwe to overcome the persistent threats of malaria, cholera, and tuberculosis affecting the Zimbabwean people, and step in and help them even if the government does not.
The United States is also the largest bilateral donor of emergency humanitarian assistance in Zimbabwe.  The United States provided nearly US$8 million in Cyclone Idai relief.  We contributed US$86.9 million in 2019-2020 lean season food assistance which is feeding more than a million food-insecure people.  Today’s growing food need is a direct result of the government’s corruption and mismanagement, which turned the breadbasket of Africa into a country much of whose population requires international food aid.  But the U.S. government supports the Zimbabwean people and will continue to help ensure they do not starve.
The Zimbabwean government has set the goal of becoming a middle-income country.  To get there, the government should fulfill its promises of upholding the rule of law, fighting corruption, respecting human rights, and fully implementing Zimbabwe’s 2013 Constitution.  Progress on these goals is the path forward to prosperity and deeper engagement with the United States and the international community.  Our targeted sanctions are not responsible for Zimbabwe falling tragically short of its potential.  The fault lies in catastrophic mismanagement by those in power and the government’s abuse of its own citizens.</blockquote>

"Zimbabwe Should Be Southern Africa's Economic Powerhouse, What Is Holding It Back?" - USA

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Thursday extolled United States President Donald Trump and his government for letting an American company, John Deere Agriculture World Wide sell farming equipment to Zimbabwe in spite of the damaged relationship between the two countries.
Speaking during the commissioning of a US$51 million farm mechanisation facility in Harare, President Mnangagwa said when he met Mark von Pentz, the company’s president in 2018, he was sceptical that a deal could materialise. He said:
<blockquote>By way of background, on 7th November 2018, I was pleased to receive the president of John Deere Agricultural World Wide Mark von Pentz who paid me a courtesy call at my Munhumutapa offices.
I was sceptical at the time because they are based in America and I think you can appreciate the reason why.
But I am extremely pleased that today we stand here, two years down the line, with the evidence of the private sector from America co-operating with us in our endeavour to modernise and mechanise our economy.
For that, we need to send a message of gratitude to President Donald Trump and his administration for this gesture.</blockquote>
Under the US$51 million deal, Zimbabwe will import 1 300 tractors, 80 combine harvesters, 600 planters, 200 Disc Harrows, 100 boom sprayers and 100 trailers from America.
United States ambassador to Zimbabwe Brian Nichols was present at the event. He stressed the importance of market-based policies, the rule of law and the involvement of the private sector for the agriculture sector to take off.

HARARE – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today welcomed an additional US$10 million in funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for families in urban areas of Zimbabwe struggling to meet their daily food needs due to the impacts of COVID-19.
The contribution will assist almost 100,000 people with monthly cash transfers equivalent to US$13 each, enabling them to meet almost two-thirds of their daily food requirements.
A September 2019 Zimbabwe Vulnerability Assessment Committee (ZimVAC) report said that more than 2.2 million people in cities and towns faced food insecurity, not least because of surging prices.  COVID-19 has exacerbated economic instability, significantly impacting urban residents already living hand to mouth, many of them working multiple jobs in the informal sector. WFP forecasts that by March next year at least 3.3 million people – almost half (47%) the country’s urban population – will be food insecure.
“This additional funding underscores the strong commitment of the American people and government to the people of Zimbabwe,” said US Ambassador Brian A. Nichols.
“This generous and timely contribution will help alleviate the suffering of a large number of people struggling to cope with the twin shocks of COVID-19 and a still deteriorating economy,” said Eddie Rowe, WFP Zimbabwe Representative and Country Director.
WFP is scaling up its urban assistance programme to deliver monthly cash transfers to at least 550,000 Zimbabweans in 20 of the country’s most food-insecure urban areas.</blockquote>

The Zimbabwe government has summoned American Ambassador Brian Nichols to explain claims made by a senior US official that Zimbabwe was among several countries interfering in violent protests in parts of the US.
Sibusiso Moyo, the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister confirmed that Nichols has been summoned. A senior government official is quoted as having said:
<blockquote>Anyone who has seen the genesis of recent events, from the tragic death of Mr Floyd to the subsequent protests, will realise that any accusations of Zimbabwean involvement at any stage are farcical.</blockquote>
In a post on Twitter, Secretary for Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Nick Mangwana said Zimbabwe does not consider itself an enemy of the United States. He said:

US President Donald Trump’s National Security Advisor, Robert O’Brien, on Sunday claimed that Zimbabwe, China, Russia and Iran were “foreign adversaries” who are trying to take advantage of anti-racist protests in America to interfere in that country’s affairs.
Violent protests flared up in several parts of the United States after a white police officer killed an unarmed black man, George Floyd in Powderhorn, Minneapolis, Minnesota last week.

Zimbabwe Govt Summons US Ambassador To Explain White House 'Adversary' Comments

Zimbabwe is set to receive US$230 million for 2021 HIV programmes under the United States of America’s President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (Pepfar) for 2021.
This comes when the US recently donated a total of US$6 million to Zimbabwe towards the fight against the novel coronavirus.
The HIV fund was announced in a statement by the US embassy which indicated that the said funding is for programmes that will run from October 2020 to September 2021. Read the statement in part:

Zimbabwe Set To Receive US$230M From The US For HIV Programmes

The United States of America has once again donated $3 million dollars to Zimbabwe to support the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
The donation that was made through the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) brings to US$6 million the money which the US has availed to Zimbabwe to support the COVID-19 national preparedness and response plan.
The donation also comes after the US had recently pledged US$470 000 to combat COVID-19 and 
to complement efforts by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to prepare large-scale testing for coronavirus in Zimbabwe.
Speaking on the donation, US embassy acting country director, Kelsey Mirkovic said:
<blockquote>The goal of the CDC and US global health response to COVID-19 is to limit human-to-human transmission and minimise the global impact of COVID-19 through partnership with countries, multilateral and non-governmental partners to mitigate vulnerabilities and gaps in preparedness.
This US funding and technical support builds on our long-standing partnership and investments to contribute to a healthier Zimbabwe.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe has thirty-four (34) officially confirmed coronavirus cases including five recoveries and four deaths.

United States ambassador to Zimbabwe, Brian Nichols has bemoaned the lack of social distancing in Zimbabwe even in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.
This was revealed by Zimbabwean journalist and filmmaker Hopewell Chin’ono. He posted on microblogging site, Twitter and said:
<blockquote>I was chatting to the U.S. Ambassador Brian Nichols this morning.
His biggest worry is the lack of social distancing.
He feels that the Coronavirus is going to race through the kombis &amp; the large gatherings like wildfire if the issue of social distancing is not taken seriously.</blockquote>
His remarks come when Zimbabwe’s health ministry officials have, like the World Health Organisation (WHO), have encouraged members of the public to avoid social gatherings as that can be a conducive environment for the spread and transmission of coronavirus.
According to authorities, Zimbabwe has two confirmed cases of the virus while those who made contact with the patients are being tracked.
Analysts say that the country is not adequately prepared t deal with the virus hence the need to intensify preventive measures.

"US Diplomat Bemoans 'Lack Of Social Distancing' In Zimbabwe," - Chin'ono

United States of America (US) ambassador to Zimbabwe <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Brian_Nichols" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Brian Nichols</a> on Wednesday said it is up to Zimbabwe to have the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act (ZIDERA) repealed.
Nichols said that for sanctions to be removed, Zimbabwe has to undertake comprehensive political and economic reforms. He said:
<blockquote>The legislation of Zidera and the executive order that covers the economic restrictions on 141 entities and persons is public and well known.
The government of Zimbabwe needs to make necessary reforms to satisfy the conditions of that legislation.
We can only hope that the government will be able to do so for us to then lift the sanctions. So it is up to the government to determine the country’s future and direction.</blockquote>
Nichols made the remarks while addressing journalists after a courtesy call on the Acting President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Constantino_Chiwenga" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Constantino Chiwenga</a> at his Munhumutapa offices in Harare.
ZIDERA was passed into law on 21 December 2001 by the then US President George W. Bush. Amendments to the Act were made in 2018.

US To Maintain Sanctions Until Necessary Reforms Are Implemented

The United States of America Embassy in Harare has claimed that in 2019 alone, the Western state contributed $334.4 million to the people of Zimbabwe. It also claimed that since 1980 when Zimbabwe got independence, the USA has given $3.2 billion to Zimbabwe. See below.

A commentator, Ken Mufuka, has advised Foreign Affairs minister <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Sibusiso_Moyo" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Sibusiso Moyo</a> against picking up a needless fight with United States of America President Donald Trump.

Political analyst, Eldred Masunungure has said that threats that were made by Foreign Affairs Minister, Sibusiso Moyo to USA ambassador to Zimbabwe, Brian Nichols recently undermined efforts of re-engagement between the USA and Zimbabwe.
Moyo had <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/10/31/full-text-were-tolerant-not-weak-zimbabwe-tells-usa/">threatened to dismiss the diplomat for allegedly acting in a manner contrary to international law</a> when he made comments on Zimbabwe’s anti-sanctions march.
<blockquote>It was, in a way a reflex action (Minister Moyo’s statement) that could have been influenced by some people in Government, the ruling party or the ministry itself by the US ambassador’s statement and the embassy’s subsequent tweets.
There is little doubt that the statement erodes the potential of re-engagement with the US. The situation has escalated in the past few weeks to make it difficult now in terms of understanding how it will end.</blockquote>
He observed further that although it was necessary to deescalate the situation, pride could hinder progress as both sides might not be willing to take the first step.
Whilst another analyst, Obert Gutu is of the view that the two countries will soon find each other, another analyst, Goodwine Mureriwa, thinks that Nichols had gone too far hence Moyo’s statement was necessary.

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Alpha_Media_Holdings">Alpha Media Holdings</a> businessman and Presidential Advisory Committee member, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Trevor_Ncube">Trevor Ncube</a>, said that sanctions are benefiting Zanu PF and helping it solidifying. Ncube was interviewing the US Ambassador to Zimbabwe, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Brian_Nichols">Brian Nichols</a>.
Said Ncube:
<blockquote>Let me go back to the Sanctions Issue and focus you on the fact that, the people that are supposed to be targeted by the sanctions don’t usually get hurt by sanctions. The people that get hurt by sanctions is the common man on the street. And right now that common man is suffering. The people that supposed to be suffering from sanctions are not suffering.
The other point is that the sanctions are actually good for a lot of people in Zanu PF hierarchy, that benefit from that. So what I’m putting across to you is that the sanctions are actually helping Zanu PF solidify and hurting the common people. And if the Americans were interested in human rights and the wellbeing of Zimbabweans, the sanctions ought to be removed to help the common people and disadvantage those that are in power.</blockquote>
To this, Brian Nichols responded:
<blockquote>If the government of Zimbabwe were truly interested in the issue of sanctions and considered this a major problem, rather than having a rally, what GoZ would do is make a chart of the things that the international community is asking it to do and then, come with an argument saying we have addressed the concerns that you have.
In multiple meetings, my boss Ambassador Tibor Nagy the Secretary of State for African Affairs he asked President Mnangagwa for repeal of POSA and AIPPA. Neither of those things have happened. <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Maintenance_of_Peace_and_Order_Bill_(MOPA)">MOPA</a> has been passed but as far as I know, it hasn’t been signed. There has not been action taken to repeal AIPPA yet. I know that there are some analysts out there looking at it.
But those are concrete things that over a year ago in September of 2018, my government asked the Government of Zimbabwe to do and these are things that are totally in line with the campaign promises that the President of Zimbabwe ran on. These are changes that are totally in line with the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Constitution_of_Zimbabwe">Constitution of 2013</a>, which is a beautiful document that enshrines universal values.
The issue again of what the effect of international restrictive measures including sanctions on the average person in Zimbabwe, I do not accept the argument that those are having an effect on the average people. The 141 persons and entities who are covered do face real restrictions and challenges. If it didn’t bother them at all and made them happier and richer, they would not be having an antis-sanctions day on October the 25th. They’d be having a “thank you for sanctions” day on October the 25th.</blockquote>
