The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has advised motorists to exercise caution when approaching the Munyati River Bridge along the Harare-Masvingo highway due to an accident that occurred at the bridge.
In a statement issued on Sunday afternoon (14 January), the Ministry said that the bus was closing the southbound lane on the bridge. It said:

Motorists are advised to exercise caution when approaching Munyati River Bridge along the Harare-Masvingo highway due to an accident involving a Blue bus at the bridge closing the south bound lane.

In a picture posted on the Ministry’s X page accompanying the statement, an overturned and extensively damaged bus was shown partially blocking the road.
The front windscreen of the bus was broken, its front wheels were missing, and luggage was strewn in front of the vehicle as it balanced on its right side.
The cause of the accident was yet to be revealed. It is not known if there were injuries to people who were on the bus when the accident occurred.

Bus Overturns On Munyati River Bridge

Two police officers and their four-month-old daughter drowned after their vehicle was swept away as they attempted to cross a flooded river on 17 December.
<a href="https://www.zimlive.com/2-police-officers-and-daughter-killed-driving-across-flooded-river/">ZimLive</a> reported that the incident occurred at Kana River which cuts across the road between Gomoza in Lupane and Kambe in Manoti, Gokwe.
Two other passengers aged 19 and 5 escaped from the Ford Ranger and swam to safety.
Police identified the deceased as Moses Manyongodo, a 35-year-old police constable based at ZRP Lupane Traffic; his wife 30-year-old detective constable Ireen Muzamba and their daughter Hellen Manyongodo.
Manyongodo was reportedly driving towards Kambe Business Centre in Manoti when he found the Kana River flooded. Police:

He drove the vehicle into the flooded river in an attempt to cross. After getting to the middle of the bridge, the vehicle was swept away by the current for about 45 metres before it got submerged in the water.
The three victims drowned whilst still in the vehicle. Their bodies were ferried to Gokwe South District Hospital mortuary.

Manyongodo was off duty on the day and his wife was on maternity leave.
Zimbabwe records numerous cases of vehicles being swept away by raging floods at bridges every rainy season.
Some bridges are low-lying, especially, in rural areas, and a slight increase in the river volumes can have catastrophic consequences for motorists.
In some cases, there won’t be alternative routes and as a result, motorists are forced to either cancel their journeys, wait for long periods until the water subsides, or drive across the river risking drowning.

Two Police Officers And Daughter Drown Driving Across Flooded River

Zimbabwe is planning to build a second bridge across the Limpopo River to improve the flow of traffic at the Beitbridge Border Post.
This was said by the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Monica Mutsvangwa during Tuesday’s post-cabinet media briefing.
Mutsvangwa said the Cabinet has approved the proposed partnership between the government and River Bridge consortium to build the new bridge. She said:

Cabinet approved the proposed partnership between the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development and River Bridge Consortium on the design, build, operate and transfer of a new bridge at Beitbridge Border Post.
The construction of the new bridge will improve the flow of traffic at the border post as well as facilitate the implementation of separation of traffic at the point of crossing, in line with international best practice.
</blockquote>
She also revealed that the government will enter into a partnership with Forbes Border Consortium on the design, build, operate and transfer project for a modernised Forbes Border Post.

A newly-built footbridge collapsed during commissioning suggesting that the contractors had not done their job diligently. Although we could not ascertain the date when the video was shot, the Lilanga language being spoken suggests the incident happened in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The bridge collapsed immediately after the ribbon was cut leading some to sarcastically say the ribbon was holding the whole bridge up.

WATCH: Newly Built Bridge Collapses During Commissioning

South African and Zimbabwean security officials have destroyed a third makeshift footbridge across the Limpopo River that had been constructed some 600 metres east of the official border post.
Two makeshift bridges, that were used by smugglers and border jumpers, were destroyed in the last six months near the same area.
The latest bridge was built overnight on Monday using logs, electricity poles and sacks filled with sand.
Beitbridge head of police, Chief Superintendent Tichaona Nyongo said the bridge was constructed in an area which is infested with hippopotamus and other dangerous wild animals. He said:

These people are determined considering that area is dangerous for humans at night.
However, we are not relenting, we are working together with the South Africans so that we suffocate the criminals on both sides of the border.
… We will leave no stone unturned as we continue fighting crime. It is advisable for people to use formal crossing points to travel and export/import goods to different countries.

Security Agents Destroy Another Illegal Bridge In Limpopo River

Vehicles have been temporarily banned from using the low-level Chilonga Bridge across the Runde River following a spate of drownings as vehicles trying to cross the river have been swept away by floods and submerged in water.
Chilonga Bridge provides the shortest route between Chiredzi Town and Chikombedzi, but it is dangerous to cross when the Runde River is in flood.
Last Saturday a vehicle was swept off the bridge after the driver lost control while trying to cross and two people, thought to be NetOne employees, drowned as a result.
The vehicle was only retrieved on Monday, 2 May, in the afternoon together with the bodies of the two people.
Chiredzi District Civil Protection Unit chair and district development coordinator Lovemore Chisema announced the temporary closure of the bridge on Monday. He said:

We have decided to temporarily close Chilonga Bridge following a spate of drownings caused by vehicles that either fall into the river after drivers lose control while trying to negotiate the low-lying submerged structure or are swept away by floods.
The bridge will only be reopened once it is deemed safe to cross after water levels go down.
Mupapa Bridge is the current viable alternative for those travelling from either Chiredzi to Chikombedzi or vice versa. It’s a longer, but safe route.

The Government recently announced that it had allocated $3.6 billion for the construction of a modern bridge across the Runde River at Chilonga.
However, the construction of the bridge is technically challenging because of the weak soils on the banks of the Runde River at Chilonga.
Meanwhile, in 2022 alone, at least eight people drowned in the Runde River after vehicles carrying them were swept away by floods.

Chilonga Bridge Temporarily Closed After NetOne Vehicle Was Swept Away

The South African Police Services (SAPS) is yet to destroy an illegal makeshift bridge over the Limpopo River linking South Africa and Zimbabwe after crocodiles charged at the officers who were trying to destroy the structure last week.
In defence, SA police shot at the advancing crocodiles while retreating from the wooden bridge.
Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the crocodiles wanted to “feast on police officers” and the reptiles “were in abundance, patrolling the area” when the incident happened on Thursday.
He added that the bridge would be destroyed in the coming week but this time with the help of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). Said Brig Mojapelo:

A small part of the bridge was destroyed. The SANDF was notified and they will also come to assist.

The wooden bridge, 3km west of the main border post, was erected by smugglers about a month ago to move goods between SA and Zimbabwe.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) was notified about the structure and on Monday last week engaged their SA counterparts since the “bridge” is on the deep end on the South African side.
The “Wooden Border Post” as it came to be known became a conduit for groceries, electrical goods, fuel and other basic commodities needed in Zimbabwe.
From Zimbabwe, it provided a passage for undocumented travellers, contraband cigarettes, and precious minerals.
The Beitbridge border has been closed for human traffic for months due to COVID-19 containment measures by both countries and this has led to an increase in smuggling involving cross-border traders.

Crocodiles Halt Destruction Of Illegal Smugglers' Bridge

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the existence of a wooden bridge that has been set up across the Limpopo River to facilitate the illegal movement of people and goods between Zimbabwe and South Africa.
This comes after media reports indicated that a pole and log structure that is being used for smuggling has been under construction for more than a week “before the eyes of the police”.
The bridge sidesteps the official crossing point, taking advantage of the fact that the border between South Africa and Zimbabwe remains closed due to COVID-19 restrictions.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said the bridge is on the South African side and they have since engaged the South African Police Service (SAPS) over the illegal structure. He said:

The ZRP has noted with concern media reports on the alleged illegal crossing “wooden bridge” in the Limpopo River in Beitbridge. 
Checks have indeed revealed that this is on the SA side. The ZRP has since dispatched a team to engage our counterparts in the SAPS.
SAPS authorities have undertaken to dismantle the illegal crossing point. The two countries will ensure arrests are effected on anyone found to be responsible for the construction of this illegal “bridge”.

The builders regularly stop to “process” goods into Zimbabwe from South Africa for fees charged according to sizes of consignments.
Reports suggest that people are charged per individual between R10 and R100.
