The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tobacco_Industry_Marketing_Board">Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB)</a> has said tobacco sales have generated more than US$65 million since the beginning of the marketing season. 
A total of 21.7 million kg of the golden leaf have been sold at an average price of US$3 per kg.
The highest price achieved to date is US$5.55 per kg, while the lowest price was US$0.10, according to <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/new-tobacco-sales-generate-us65m">The Sunday Mail</a>.
The 2023 tobacco marketing season started on Wednesday 8 March and sales are expected to rise by 8.5 per cent to 230 million kilograms in 2023.
Early this month, TIMB attributed the growth to the good rains the country received including more farmers planting the crop.
Zimbabwe is one of the largest producers of tobacco in Africa, with the crop being a major source of foreign exchange earnings for the country.
The southern African nation aims to increase production to 300 million kg by 2025. Its output peaked at 261 million kg in 2019.
The government says the sector contributes nearly US$1 billion to export earnings every year, accounting for more than 12 per cent of exports in January 2023.
Tobacco land use grew to 117 000 hectares this year from 110 000 hectares in 2022, according to the TIMB. The industry also saw an increase in the number of tobacco farmers to 148 527 this year from 123 000 in 2022.
This comes as Mvurwi Town in Mashonaland Central, which serves one of the leading tobacco growing areas, is eyeing investors who are keen to add value to the crop.
The town which houses tobacco auction floors has embarked on a massive expansion drive, with new layout plans opening more land for thousands of stands, which will benefit civil servants and low-income earners.
Following the decentralisation of auction floors, Mvurwi now has seven auction floors, including one of the biggest, the Tobacco Sales Floor (TSF).
Tobacco farming in Zimbabwe is mainly done by smallholder farmers, although there are also large-scale commercial farmers who cultivate the crop. 
The tobacco growing season in Zimbabwe runs from September to May, with the main tobacco auction season running from March to July.
The government of Zimbabwe has been actively promoting tobacco farming in the country, offering various incentives to farmers, such as loans, inputs, and technical support. 
There are different organizations in Zimbabwe involved in regulating, representing, and supporting the tobacco industry.

4). The Zimbabwe Leaf Tobacco Company (ZLTC) and 5), Alliance One Tobacco Zimbabwe (AOZ) are subsidiaries of major tobacco merchants that work with growers to ensure quality and sustainability in tobacco production, and provide support to improve their productivity and profitability.

Tobacco Sales Have Generated US$65 Million

An investigation by BBC Panorama has found evidence that suggests one of the world’s largest tobacco companies, British American Tobacco (BAT), bribed the late Robert Mugabe to have its illegal surveillance charges dropped.
Leaked documents show that BAT contracted a South African private security company, Forensic Security Services (FSS) to sabotage BAT’s rivals. Officially, FSS was contracted to fight the black-market cigarette trade, however former employees told the BBC that the security company broke the law to sabotage BAT’s rivals.
In one operation, FSS staff were instructed to close down three cigarette factories run by BAT’s competitors in Zimbabwe. FSS paid an unnamed Zimbabwean firm to conduct surveillance on a Savanna Tobacco factory in 2012, but the company got caught. 
Three of the firm’s directors were charged in connection with the illegal surveillance. The arrests prompted the then president, Robert Mugabe, to make a speech condemning the men’s actions and BAT’s suspected involvement. A man who was sent by BAT to negotiate a deal with Mugabe who spoke to Panorama said he bribed a number of government officials to secure a meeting to discuss the arrested directors’ case.
Documents seen by the BBC confirm that the man was provided with the equivalent of US$12,000 in local currency. They also suggest the money for the bribes was provided by BAT. A memo suggested that the amount of the donation would be in the region of between USD300,000 to USD500,000 to Zanu PF.
While the leaked documents do not show if the bribe was paid, the three directors were released within days of the deal being offered. <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-58517339" rel="noopener" target="_blank">BBC</a> reports that BAT declined to answer Panorama’s questions about the Zimbabwe payments, but it did not deny paying a bribe to Robert Mugabe.

British American Tobacco Bribed Robert Mugabe To Have Illegal Surveillance Charges Dropped

The Ministry of Finance and Economic Development has projected that the country will, in 2019 and 2020, export commodities with a value less than the cost of exports.
This means that Zimbabwe will literally continue to export all the foreign currency that gets into the country.
In the recently published 2020 pre-budget strategy document, the Finance Ministry projected that the country’s exports will record US$5 billion, against imports of US$6.3 billion to give a current account deficit of US$238 million.
Although the projections do not present an encouraging picture, the Ministry observes that the projections reflect an improvement compared to most recent years. The Ministry said:
<blockquote>This reflects a major shift towards a balanced current account through export promotion supported by import management measures, which prioritise essential inputs and capital equipment as opposed to non-essential imports.
In 2020, exports are projected at US$5.5 billion with imports growing to US$6.6 billion on account of higher imports of essential inputs and equipment, including electricity and fuel.</blockquote>
 
The Ministry also projected that the economy will further deteriorate in the remainder of the year before it regains in 2020.
This projection is consistent with that of the International Monetary Fund.

No Joy As 2019 & 2020 Imports Are Projected To Outweigh Exports

Clara Mlambo, the resigned Managing Director of British American Tobacco Holdings Ltd (BAT) has revealed her 21-year journey with the company. Posting via her LinkedIn account, Mlambo said:
<blockquote>I joined BAT as a Management Trainee 21 years ago and am now currently the only female Managing Director of a company listed on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange. I have lived in four different countries ( Zimbabwe, Kenya, South Africa and Zambia), worked with incredible teams across 30 countries in Africa and held many different positions within the group. In between all this I got married and raised a family. These achievements would not have been possible without the belief in me, support, mentoring, coaching, brutally honest conversations that I received from the many people who had a vested interest in me and my success. To name a few – thank you Roy Masamba, Joe Muganda, Kennedy Mandevhani, Brian Finch, Jorge Davyt, Andre Joubert, Priscilla Mutembwa, Tina Muparadzi, Gary Fagan, Leslie Rance. I know I have left out many names but this is the core that put their necks out on the line and constantly bet on an unknown horse.Thank you to every body else who I have not named but played an important role in my career.

Resigned British American Tobacco Managing Director Speaks Out

British American Tobacco (BAT) Zimbabwe Holdings Limited has announced that it is hunting for a new Managing Director. The search follows the resignation of Clara Mlambo from the company.
The incumbent Managing Director is expected to officially leave the organisation on June 30.
The development was disclosed by BAT acting company secretary Stephen Nyabadza. The secretary said:
<blockquote>The board of directors of BAT wishes to advise its shareholders that (Mrs) Mlambo resigned as managing director of the company  effective June 30.
The board further advises that it is in the process of recruiting a replacement for Mlambo and will advise its shareholders as soon as an appointment has been made…and would like to thank her valuable contribution to the company during her tenure.</blockquote>
British American Tobacco is a manufacturer, distributor, and seller of tobacco products for local consumption. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe is the 6th largest tobacco grower in the world and the largest in Africa.
