Finance and Economic Development Minister Mthuli Ncube said that the completion of the US$20 million Bulawayo Students City, a student accommodation complex in Selbourne Park is an indication of economic growth, reported the <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200014125/students-residence-a-sign-of-economic-growth-ncube">Southern Eye</a>.
Touring the complex which is located along Gwanda Road in the city, Ncube said:

This project is a public-private partnership and this shows that our public or government institutions can work closely with the private sector to solve issues such as accommodation.
When you see the size of this facility you also see economic growth, you can imagine the jobs that were created and this shows that the construction sector is contributing to overall economic growth.
We have several higher education institutions here in Bulawayo and there has been a high demand for affordable students’ accommodation and I am glad that this gap has been filled by the Bulawayo Students’ City project.
… we are making sure that the students are comfortable and live in a nice environment where they will be able to upgrade their skills and contribute towards skills and uplift the country.

The project was funded by the Infrastructure Development Bank of Zimbabwe, Old Mutual, Zimnat, Motor Industry Pension Fund and others.

Completion Of Bulawayo Students City A Sign Of Economic Growth - Mthuli Ncube

The Bulawayo Students Complex, costing US$17 million and capable of housing over 1,000 students, is now ready for occupation. The Zimbabwean government has stated its intention to replicate this project in other areas with tertiary institutions to alleviate accommodation problems, <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/bulawayo-students-complex-opens-doors-project-to-be-replicated-country-wide/">The Sunday News</a> reported citing Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development Minister, Professor Amon Murwira.
The complex, called “Bulawayo Students City,” is a joint venture project involving the Infrastructure Development Bank of Zimbabwe (IDBZ), Old Mutual, Zimnat, and Mining Industry Pension Funds. It is a self-contained three-block of flats that includes fast food outlets, shops, salons, and sporting facilities. The complex has 516 rooms and is expected to accommodate 1,023 students. It is open to all tertiary students in the city from various institutions.
Posting on their Twitter handle on Thursday, Old Mutual Zimbabwe said:

The affordability of rental charges for the Bulawayo Students City is a significant concern that may impact student uptake. In 2018, an infrastructure needs survey revealed that existing accommodation facilities were unsuitable for enrolments and inadequate for the increasing number of tertiary students.
Professor Amon Murwira stressed the importance of ensuring that rentals are affordable for students. He said the government and private sector are working together to provide decent accommodation for students and staff, which is crucial for a conducive learning environment. The involvement of the private sector is in line with the government’s policy on infrastructure development. While implementation may vary, progress is being made towards achieving this goal, which is better than no progress at all.
The Bulawayo Students City project was first proposed in 2016 under the University Students and Staff Accommodation Programme (USSAP). Minister Murwira stated that the government is leading the country’s economic transformation, with higher learning institutions playing a crucial role. The introduction of Heritage-based Education 5.0 has led to the production of goods and services in the country, rather than just producing graduates without the skills to create jobs.
