A Grade 6 pupil at St. Peters Primary School in Mazwi Village, near Bulawayo, has reportedly suffered brain damage after being assaulted by classmates for preventing them from misusing school chalks.
Thirteen-year-old Rackel Muzamba developed pressure of speech—a condition characterized by an intense and rapid speech pattern—after being attacked by six classmates last week. The incident occurred when she intervened while their teacher was away.
The classmates ambushed her in a nearby bush, assaulted her, and left her unconscious. A passing student discovered her and sought help from a nearby village.
Precious Muzamba, the victim’s mother, told the <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200035943/learner-suffers-brain-damage-after-assault-by-classmates">Southern Eye</a> that she went to the Social Welfare Department and they referred her to Mpilo Central Hospital. She said:

I engaged the school authorities. They had a meeting with the parents of the children who assaulted her, but they [parents] said they do not have money to help me. I went to the Social Welfare (Department) and they referred me to Mpilo Central Hospital.

Muzamba said the guardians of the children involved were approached twice by the school head regarding hospital bills, but they claimed they could not afford to help.
She said she chose not to report the incident to the police initially, hoping for cooperation from the parents.
Her daughter was discharged from the hospital recently but has been experiencing confusion and hallucinations, raising concerns about potential brain damage. She is also struggling with basic functions, such as using the toilet.
Muzamba said she doesn’t have funds to purchase prescribed paracetamol and that her husband is deceased.

A nine-year-old learner, Anotidaishe Muramba, tragically passed away while receiving treatment at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare on December 2, after being pushed by his classmates at school.
According to a statement from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) posted on X, Anotidaishe informed his father on November 29 that he had been pushed during playtime, which resulted in complaints of back pain.
Taking his son’s concerns seriously, the father sought medical attention, but sadly, the boy died just a few days later. Police said:

Police in Harare are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a learner, Anotidaishe Muramba (9) who passed away whilst admitted at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, Harare on 02/12/24. The victim had allegedly reported to his father on 29/11/24, that he was pushed by his classmates at school during child play and complained of back pains.

It remains unclear whether any underlying health issues contributed to Anotidaishe’s death; however, the incident has raised concerns about child safety and bullying in schools.
In a separate case, the ZRP confirmed the arrest of Daniel Chifamba (32) in connection with a murder that occurred at the Level Cross Business Centre in Chikombedzi on Sunday.
Chifamba allegedly assaulted Meke Kuza (66) multiple times on the head with a knobkerrie after Kuza attempted to stop him from further attacking Chris Tada during a dispute.
In another tragic incident, Methembe Bongisani Khumalo (22) was found dead with stab wounds to his ankle and thighs beside a footpath in Battlefields on Monday.
Police said that Khumalo was last seen on Sunday at around 8:30 PM, being pursued by unidentified men following an altercation during a beer drinking binge.

Boy, 9, Dies In Hospital Three Days After Being "Pushed" By Classmates

Last week, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education swiftly responded to a distressing incident at Ruwangwe Secondary School in Nyanga District. A viral video depicted four female students mercilessly assaulting a defenceless classmate.
The disturbing video captured the four assailants attempting to strip the hapless victim naked while relentlessly kicking and slapping her.
Fortunately, the timely intervention of two men on a motorcycle managed to break up the violent altercation.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/tackling-bullying-in-schools/">The Manica Post</a> last week, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education’s spokesperson, Taungana Ndoro, said that the Ministry dispatched a team to the school to investigate the incident and also to provide guidance and counselling to both the perpetrators and the victim. Ndoro said:

When the video circulated, we immediately intervened as the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education. We promptly dispatched our team to Ruwangwe Secondary School in Nyanga District to get to the bottom of that very unfortunate incident.
The team went there, not only for investigations, but it also comprised of professional counsellors to provide guidance and counselling to both the perpetrators and the victim.
We established that the incident was triggered by a social misunderstanding among the learners involved.
Everything has since been resolved and the school head was instructed to institute stringent measures to prevent similar cases from happening in the future since the incident occurred outside the school premises.

He said the victim did not sustain any serious injuries during the attack, but just some minor bruises.
Ndoro said the Ministry does not condone bullying, adding that communities should also be involved in preventing social deviance. He said:

As a matter of policy, all the 10 600 schools across Zimbabwe are required to have anti-bullying teaching that is delivered to every learner to sensitise them about the scourge.
Learning institutions also have guidance and counselling lessons tackling bullying. This forms part of schools’ regulations.
When such unfortunate incidents happen, corrective or disciplinary measures rather than punitive punishment are taken to address and redress bullying.
To complement what is being taught in schools about bullying through guidance and counselling lessons, awareness is also being raised in communities so that parents and guardians are involved too.
Society cannot just watch while children plunge into deviance epitomised by bullying, but have to intervene and prevent the vice.
Parents and guardians also have a role to play by ensuring that their children are neither perpetrators nor victims. No one is safe until we all are involved in addressing this issue.

Bullying in schools has been a problematic issue, affecting students’ safety and academic achievement.
A study at a Zimbabwean co-ed rural boarding school revealed that bullying was rife. School prefects sometimes used their positions to bully other students.
Causes of bullying included intrinsic factors, inherent hatred, home background status, teacher favouritism, jealousy, unreported previous cases, complacency of teachers, and a lack of concrete structures to address bullying.

Ministry Of Education Tackles Bullying In Schools After Assault Video Emerges

Two videos of a bullying attack on a boy identified as Zimbabwean in the UK has gone viral on social media. The bullying incident itself is said to have happened this week, in a place called Carlisle, Cumbria in the UK. 
In the two videos that were <a href="https://twitter.com/Oluomoofderby/status/1768752973042037239/">posted on Twitter</a>, a white boy rushes to the Zimbabwean boy and punches him several times, pushes him, and then asks him “Get on your knees and kiss my shoes”.
The visibly frightened victim gives in.

As the incident happens it seems there are several onlookers commenting and some of them laughing. It is not clear who recorded the video. The bully was not in school uniform so it is also unclear if he is a student at the same school as the Zimbabwean boy.
One source has told Pindula that he’s familiar with people known to the boy and that they are Zimbabwean. He also said that people close to the situation have suggested that the boy has always been bullied at school because of his visibly strong Zimbabwean accent.

<h2>Racism or just Bullying?</h2>
As the video circulated, there have been arguments on social media with some claiming it’s just regular bullying, while others said it’s a race issue.
The bully is a white boy. The Zimbabwean victim is an African.
The Twitter user who posted the videos, Olumo of Derby, commented:

There has been increased migration of Zimbabweans to the UK since the 2000, with many seeking greener pastures. Police have arrested three learners from Mathula High School in Tsholotsho District after they were filmed assaulting a female learner.
The suspects aged 16 and 17, reportedly assaulted the victim after she had turned down a love proposal from one of the learners.
ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the development to CITE’s <a href="https://cite.org.zw/three-tsholotsho-learners-arrested-after-video-of-brutal-beating-goes-viral/">Senzeni Ncube</a>. He said:

That case has been received by the police and we have located the complainant and the witnesses. We have arrested three suspects so far.
One suspect is aged 17 and the other two suspects are aged 16.

It is alleged that after his love proposal was turned down, the 17-year-old suspect and his colleagues waylaid the complainant on her way home and then assaulted her.
One of the learners recorded the incident which showed one of the suspects brandishing a machete, which police consider a dangerous weapon and should not be carried in public. Added Asst Comm Nyathi:

Jiti musician Baba Harare, whose real name is Braveman Chizvino, has described ZANU PF sympathiser and preacher Passion Java, born Panganai Java, as a social media bully.
Baba Harare and Java have been exchanging jibes on social media and their “tiff” reportedly escalated after the former urged youths to register to vote.
Java also mocked Baba Harare, describing the musician as a spent force.
Speaking in an interview with NewsDay, Baba Harare said he was not fighting Java to get likes and loves on social media platforms. He said:

A Grade 10 learner has been arrested after he allegedly set a car on fire at Northbury Secondary School in Durban in KwaZulu-Natal earlier this week.
A spokesperson for Mountain Rise SAPS, Warrant Officer Pancheal Singh, said the teenager was arrested on Thursday night. He said:

He was released into the care of his guardian. He is due in court on September 14 and faces a charge of malicious injury to property.

The boy allegedly poured petrol on the deputy principal’s Hyundai i30 after she chastised him for having a cell phone at school, which is against the school’s policy. She also confiscated the cellphone.
DA spokesperson for Education, Dr Imran Keeka urged parents to play their part in preventing such attacks. Said Keeka:

Teachers have implored the government to revise laws on corporal punishment saying the ban on canning learners is now contributing to indiscipline in schools.
This comes after violent pupils gangs unleashed terror at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Msiteli_Secondary_School">Msiteli High School</a> in Bulawayo’s Mpopoma suburb, spreading fear among teachers.
Two weeks ago, the gangs fought running battles at the school resulting in the destruction of a section of the school pre-cast wall and window panes.
The gangs were fighting each other using dangerous weapons like catapults, stones and knobkerries.
A teacher at Msiteli who spoke on condition of anonymity said the Government must revise laws on corporal punishment as they are contributing to indiscipline in schools. Said the teacher:

Personally, I am making plans to move to another school because I am afraid of what these gangs can do to me.
According to school rules, a child must be expelled after being blacklisted three times.
Imagine if the violence that occurred at the school was the first, what next will they do? Definitely something bigger.

Another teacher said the gangs have threatened some teachers at the school as they know that nothing will be done to them. He said:

The gang members camp outside the school and as teachers dismiss you hear them talking that this is the one who beat me up yesterday.
We blame the banning of corporal punishment as pupils no longer fear the school head and teachers as they know nothing will be done to them.

Another teacher said bullying at the school was a big problem and learners are afraid to report it to school authorities. Said the teacher:

It is really a cause for concern because after experiencing violence of that magnitude teachers are really starting to question their own safety.
Although they are not the primary target it is not long before they are the target. The safety of the learners is in the hands of teachers when at school so once we involve ourselves, we will be attacked.
Teachers are becoming more and more reluctant to administer issues of discipline which has seen a rise in cases of lesson bunking and absenteeism.
This has been worsened by the banning of corporal punishment in schools which has left teachers at the mercy of the learners.
It is also making it difficult for teachers to make follow-ups on learners who don’t do their school work.

When reached for comment last week, Primary and Secondary Education ministry director of information and advocacy, Taungana Ndoro said authorities were working flat out to flush the scourge.

Authorities at the school have reportedly been alerted and the Methodist Church is said to have been alerted about the incident as well.

Three pupils from Mutero High School in Gutu, Masvingo have been given three months wholly suspended jail sentences for bullying.
The three, Stewart Mazuru (20), Tapiwa Gijima (18) and a minor (17) appeared before Gutu magistrate Mandlenkosi Ndlovu last Friday.
Prosecutor Samuel Magobeya told the court that on 12 December 2020, the trio took the minor to the school dam, accusing him of stealing Mazuru’s mobile phone.
They assaulted the victim for three hours while at the same time pushing him into the water.
They only stopped bullying the minor after the lunch bell rang. Said Magobeya:

They pushed him into the dam after every assault and only let him free after the lunch hour siren rang.</blockquote>

3 Pupils At Mutero High School Jailed For Bullying

Churchill Boys High School headmaster Patson Mugwanda downplayed reports claiming that cyberbullying is rife at the school.
Police were called to the school for investigations after reports of a case of cyberbullying at the school on Tuesday and involving Form 4 and U6 pupils.
Mugwanda claimed that there was nothing in the allegations as it is normal for outgoing pupils to misbehave at the end of the year. He said:
<blockquote>We received a report of a Form 3 student who had a misunderstanding with another student and one of the three students involved recorded one of the pupils saying he was after the other student’s blood.
The audio, upon reaching his parents, disturbed them and they took the matter to Rhodesville police station and two officers came and we discussed the matter. Upon thorough investigations, it turned out to be a hoax.</blockquote>
Mugwanda added that the rumour started when the alleged victim, a big-bodied Taekwondo player, was making fun of challenging his seniors. He said:
<blockquote>One of the alleged victim’s friend was the one who recorded the audio following a challenging statement reported to have been uttered by the alleged cyberbullying victim to a Form 4 student.
The alleged victim is big-bodied and is a Taekwondo player so he was making fun of challenging his seniors and this is how it started.
We involved our school disciplinary members and the alleged victim apologised for breaking rule number seven of the school rules that guide our students.</blockquote>

Police Probe Bullying Reports At Churchill Boys High

Harare West legislator Jessie Majome has accused MDC-T youths of creating a WhatsApp group which they have used to attack her.
Speaking during an interview on Capitalk FM on Tuesday evening, Majome said at one instance she told that she is old and must go herd donkeys in the village. Said Majome:
<blockquote>I have experienced incredible abuse on social media particularly WhatsApp run in some quarters in the party. It seems like youths chauvinism. I have very malicious accusations. For example, they say I am old and must ship out. One of my competitors is a 24- year-old girl. They say you are old, get out and go. They say chembere ngadziende kumusha dzindofudza madhongi.</blockquote>
Majome who has been receiving media attention since her announcement that she was withdrawing from MDC-T primary elections, questioned why she was being labelled as old considering that she is only 6 years older than party leader Nelson Chamisa. She added that she has met Mr Morgan Komichi over the issue of primary elections and he promised to get in touch with her.
