<p>The 7th edition of the annual Roil Bulawayo Arts Awards (RoilBAA) recently took place in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, celebrating outstanding achievements in the arts industry. The event, held at the Zimbabwe International Exhibition Centre, was a glamorous affair, with attendees dressing up for the occasion. One of the highlights of the evening was the recognition of various artists and their exceptional contributions to the arts.</p>
<p>Following the awards, however, unsettling claims and allegations have emerged involving Saimon Mambazo Phiri, a well-known arts practitioner and one of the organisers of the BAA. Reports suggest that Phiri was involved in a violent incident, allegedly assaulting a monitoring engineer during the event. In a statement seen by Pindula News, Roil Bulawayo Arts Awards Management said:</p>

<p>With all positives from the Awards and in line with enjoyment and celebrating the arts, it is with a heavy heart that we acknowledge an incident that happened backstage. The AWARDS TRUST sincerely apologises for the incident and would like to assure our creatives that it will not happen again, the stage is a safe environment. We have since reached out to the aggrieved camp who we have worked with since inception of the awards and in other events.</p>
<p>We do not condone violence in any form and nature. Apologies to everyone affected.</p>

<p>However, Phiri has yet to comment on the matter.</p>
<p>Among the winners was the popular Rhumba group <strong>Insimbi Zezhwane</strong>, who received two awards. They were honoured with the <strong>People’s Choice Award</strong>, which included a brand-new car as a prize, and the <strong>Outstanding MaEli Tshibilika Act.</strong> The group expressed gratitude for the support they have received, particularly in light of the tragic loss of some of their members in a road traffic accident earlier this year.</p>
<p>The RoilBAA also acknowledged the outstanding works of artists such as Black Umfolosi, Thandanani Women’s Ensemble, jazz guitarist Simbarashe Hudson, Thabani Moyo, and Ezra Sibanda. The awards ceremony featured captivating performances by local artists like Mzoe 7 and Umnikazi Wempuphu, as well as a special tribute to the late Hip Hop artist, Calvin Ncube.</p>
<p>In addition to the music category, other awards were presented, including the <strong>Outstanding Gospel Act Award</strong>, which went to E<strong>verton Mlalazi,</strong> the <strong>Outstanding Alternative Music Award</strong>, which was won by <strong>Fab G</strong>, and the <strong>Outstanding Male Artist Award</strong>, which was bestowed upon <strong>Calvin Mangena</strong>.</p>
<p>Prior to the event, the top ten nominees for the People’s Choice Award were announced, with the ultimate winner being determined by the votes of those in attendance. </p>
<p>According to Nkue Nkala, one of the organisers, the BAA (Bulawayo Arts Awards) are meant to recognise and honour exceptional individuals and collaborative artistes and artists who have made significant contributions to the arts scene in Bulawayo, Matebeleland North, South, and even those originally from the region but now practising internationally.</p>

Backstage Violence At The Roil Bulawayo Arts Awards (RoilBAA)

<p>For the first time ever, the European Union (EU) is attending the <strong><a href="https://wiki.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_International_Trade_Fair">Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF)</a> </strong>which kicked off today in Bulawayo.</p>
<p><strong><a href="https://wiki.pindula.co.zw/Busisa_Moyo">Busisa Moyo</a></strong>, ZITF board chair and business leader, has suggested that President Emmerson Mnangagwa should visit the exhibition stands of the participating countries to understand their contributions to Zimbabwe’s economy.</p>
<p>Speaking to ZiFM’s Monalisa Dube during a radio show “Business Unusual”, Moyo emphasized the importance of business engagement for building relationships between Zimbabwe and the international community. He also highlighted the vibrant horticulture industry in Zimbabwe, noting that the EU is a significant partner in this sector as it imports flowers from the southern African country. <p>Busisa Moyo also mentioned that the United Kingdom is participating in this year’s edition of ZITF.</p>
<p>The theme for this year’s event is “Transformative Innovation, Global Competitiveness.” Moyo explained that in order for businesses in Africa to thrive and catch up with the rest of the world, there is a need to identify transformative solutions. While Africa has had innovation, it has not been transformative in nature.</p>
<p><strong>Who can exhibit:</strong></p>
<p>According to Busisa Moyo, the Zimbabwe International Trade Fare (ZITF) is a platform for local and foreign businesses of all sizes to showcase their products to the public. The criteria for selecting exhibitors is multi-sectorial, and as long as they can pay the standard fee, they can participate. He dismissed the notion that it was a preserve for big businesses saying some small businesses have been able to find partners who can help them commercialize their products by exhibiting at ZITF.</p>
<p>When asked if the benefits of exhibiting at ZITF can be measured at a national level, Busisa Moyo said it is difficult to track the returns. However, the fact that businesses continue to advertise at the event every year indicates that it is working for them.</p>
<p>Moyo also emphasized that ZITF is an annual <a class="Markdown_link__9ACHA MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">state event</a> and an essential tool for <a class="Markdown_link__9ACHA MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Zimbabwe</a> to reach out and engage with the international community for commercial purposes.</p>
<p>He said close to 600 exhibitors are participating at the ZITF this year. There were about 700 exhibitors before the outbreak of COVID-19. Limited in terms of space. The ZITF board is working on expanding infrastructure to accommodate the growing number of exhibitors.</p>

EU Attending ZITF For The 1st Time Ever

<p>Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who was scheduled to be the guest of honour at the 2022 Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) will not be replaced.</p>
<p>Kenyatta was set to officially open the trade exhibition on Friday but it has since been confirmed that he will not attend the event.</p>
<p>Speaking on the sidelines of a press briefing on Monday, 24 April, ZITF chairman Busisa Moyo said set protocol does not allow for a replacement of a guest of honour. Moyo said:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>Kenya is in mourning following the death of former President Kibaki and as such President Kenyatta is no longer coming.</p>
<p>The set protocol does not allow for a replacement of a guest of honour. Therefore, President Emmerson Mnangagwa is officiating.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Kenyatta cancelled his planned visit to Zimbabwe following the death of the East African country’s former president Mwai Kibaki last week.</p>
<p>The 2022 Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) will be held from April 26 to 30 under the theme: “Rethink, Reimagine, Reinvent Value Chains for Economic Development”.</p>

ZITF: No Replacement For Uhuru Kenyatta

<p>The 2022 Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) will be open to children under the age of 18 on 29 and 30 April.</p>
<p>In a statement, the ZITF Company board chairman Busisa Moyo said the company has set aside two public days for children under the age of 18 to attend the trade showcase. He said:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>ZITF 2022 will be open to members of the general public (including children under the age of 18) on 29 and 30 April 2022.</p>
<p>We invite them to come through and sample the various exhibits on display, learn more about locally produced goods and services and enjoy the myriad entertainment activities put together with the whole family in mind.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>There will also be a platform specifically for the youths that will cover topics such as education, innovation and human capital development. Added Moyo:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>The Scholastica Expo will therefore run concurrently with the main trade show bringing together learners, educational experts and career advisors to share information on strategic human capital development for developing a self-sustaining and enterprising economy.</p>
<p>Career guidance sessions and presentations will also run parallel to the expo. The Scholastica Conference will take place on 26 April under the theme ‘Economic Development through Innovation and Heritage: Promoting Talent and Skill-based Education’.</p>

<p>The 62nd edition of the ZITF will be held from 26 to 30 April 2022. It will run under the theme, “Rethink, Reimagine, Reinvent Value Chains for Economic Development.”</p>

2022 Zimbabwe International Trade Fair Open For Children

<p><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;">United Refineries Limited (URL) chief executive, Busisa Moyo, has urged the government to accept tax payments in the local currency to increase confidence in its use.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;">The businessman, who is also a presidential advisor to President Emmerson Mnangagwa made the remarks on the sidelines of the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) 2021 congress. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;">Speaking during a live radio talk show on the weekend, Moyo who is also the chairperson of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF), said:</span></p>
<blockquote>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif;">The US$1: $200 and US$1: $100 rates have caused a lot of challenges in the industry, a lot of things are being chocked</span>.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">I do not think you should pay taxes in US dollars, you should pay taxes in the local currency. The government is the issuer of the local currency, the first backer of the currency is government itself.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">You cannot invite me to your house and say I am buying myself a KFC when you are the one who cooked. If you invite me we eat together.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;">The local currency which is now trading at US$1: ZWL$99 on the official market and as high as US$1: ZWL$200 on the popular black market, has been losing value at a parafin speed since reintroduction in 2019. </span></p>

Mnangagwa's Advisor Urges Government To Accept Zim Dollar Tax Payments

<p>The recent deadly riots in South Africa’s Kwazulu-Natal and Gauteng Provinces which resulted in the looting of malls and warehouses and the closure of busy highways have forced Zimbabwean business people to rethink their country’s unhealthy overdependence on its neighbour.</p>
<p>Writing on Twitter almost immediately after the outbreak of the riots in South Africa, Busisa Moyo, a respected business leader in Zimbabwe, presciently warned:</p>
<blockquote><p>The disturbances in SA will affect the entire region. We will all feel it in the next few days. Conserve cash, food, raw materials and other necessities.</p>
<p>The region especially Zimbabwe is not ready for a life without a functional Durban Port and key roads the N3 and N1.</p></blockquote>
<p>According to estimates, the riots caused damage of US$2 billion. While calm is returning to South Africa and the N3 that connects Durban to the commercial capital Johannesburg has been reopened, Zimbabwe is still counting the cost of the riots.</p>
<p>Butler Tambo, a Zimbabwean independent economic analyst, warned that prices of goods will skyrocket. He said:</p>
<blockquote><p>Countries like Zimbabwe with industrial capacity utilisation of less than 60% are landlocked and rely on South African ports of entry for vital imports.</p>
<p>Prices of basic commodities in Zimbabwe will further skyrocket, that is if the products will still be there on shop floors.</p>
<p>Unemployment will rise in SA, meaning that an estimated one million Zimbabweans in that country will become part of the unemployed.</p>
<p>Diaspora remittances from SA will significantly drop, meaning massive and abject poverty for Zimbabwean families reliant on remittances from that country.</p>
<p>Add to this tragic tale the lockdowns and restrictions under COVID-19, and it becomes a ghastly sight.</p>
<p>When the opportunities for employment shrink in SA, the next chapter is that xenophobia will rear its ugly head again and foreigners will be blamed for the mess lying ahead.</p></blockquote>
<p>According to the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI), Zimbabwe imports 58% of its raw materials from SA, while only 7% are imported from other countries in SADC.</p>
<p>Europe is the source of 13% of Zimbabwe’s imports and China accounts for 11%.</p>

<p>Sekai Kuvarika, the CEO of the CZI, says Zimbabwe’s industry is definitely going to be affected by the unrest in SA as most of its raw materials come from SA. She said:</p>
<blockquote><p>We may not be able to immediately quantify the impact, but Zimbabwe’s industry is certainly going to be affected in the short to medium term.</p>
<p>Our industry’s capacity utilisation improved to nearly 58% over the past year, up from about 36% in 2019.</p>
<p>The closure of the major routes used for the transportation of raw materials and other goods — though they may now have reopened — means that production will be affected.</p>
<p>This in turn might see a dip in capacity utilisation in the short to medium term.</p></blockquote>
<p>Researcher Prosper Chitambara of the Labour and Economic Development Research Institute of Zimbabwe says Zimbabwe should consider increasing the use of other ports of entry in Mozambique, Namibia and Tanzania for its imports. Said Chitambara:</p>
<blockquote><p>It is important in the medium to long term for Zimbabwe to make use of other routes for imports, especially those that do not necessarily originate from SA.</p>
<p>It is clear that too much reliance on SA can have serious negative consequences, as we are seeing in the current scenario.</p></blockquote>
<p>Alois Burutsa, the general manager of Buy Zimbabwe, a lobby organisation that seeks to promote the consumption of locally produced goods and services, said:</p>
<blockquote><p>What we are saying as Buy Zimbabwe is that we need to greatly reduce our dependency or reliance on foreign products, foreign raw materials and foreign finished products, and consume locally produced goods and services.</p>
<p>We are also in full support of the government’s local content policy, as it is now more critical for us as a nation to localise our value chains and start getting our raw materials locally so that we become as self-reliant as possible as a nation to avoid such exogenous shocks.</p></blockquote>

Zimbabwean Businesses Reassess Overdependence On South Africa

<p>Prominent local industrialist Busisa Moyo has advised Zimbabweans to stock on cash, food and other necessities as these could be in short supply in the next few days following the ongoing riots in South Africa, the country’s major trading partner.</p>
<p>Moyo, who is Chief Executive Officer of United Refineries and chairman of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair company, said the disturbances in South Africa will affect the entire Southern African region considering the fact that the country’s major highways linking the hinterland to Durban Port have been blockaded. <a href="https://twitter.com/BusisaMoyo/status/1414992535987048457">Moyo tweeted</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>The disturbances in SA will affect the entire region. We will all feel it in the next few days. Conserve cash, food, raw materials and other necessities.</p>

<p>South Africa’s president Cyril Ramaphosa<strong> <a href="https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/president-cyril-ramaphosa-kzn-gauteng-riots-latest-news-breaking-zuma-protests-address-sandf-monday-12-july/amp/">on Monday warned</a> </strong>that recent violence and damage to infrastructure caused by criminals participating in riots in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and Gauteng since Saturday is soon going to lead to severe food and healthcare shortages, with trucks and supply chains, as well as businesses have fallen victim to vandalism and looting. He said:</p>
<blockquote><p>[The violent riots] started with the burning of trucks at Mooi River on Saturday, and was followed by the blockading of roads and looting of shops in the north of KZN.</p>
<p>Our sick cannot get help from pharmacies, food doesn’t reach shelves, and health workers cannot get to work. We are facing food and medication insecurity within a matter of weeks.”</p></blockquote>

"Zimbabwe Will Soon Start Feeling The Pain Of Looting In SA"

<p>The former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Zimbabwe Investment Authority (ZIA), <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Richard_Mubaiwa">Richard Mubaiwa</a> has died.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Busisa_Moyo">Busisa Moyo</a>, a Zimbabwean business executive and the current Chief Executive Officer of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/United_Refineries" title="United Refineries">United Refineries</a> Ltd and also a member of the <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Presidential_Advisory_Council" title="Presidential Advisory Council">Presidential Advisory Council</a> of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Emmerson_Mnangagwa" title="Emmerson Mnangagwa">Emmerson Mnangagwa</a> announced Mubaiwa’s death saying:</p>
<blockquote><p>Rest In Peace Mr. Richard Mubaiwa (former CEO of Zimbabwe Investment Authority). He served the country loyally and with diligence for many years. Travelling to distant lands to mobilize investment for Zimbabwe. <p>Moyo, however, did not reveal the cause of Richard Mubaiwa’s death although it is alleged that he succumbed to COVID-19.</p>
<p>Mubaiwa joined the then Zimbabwe Investment Centre in 1994 as an Investment Promotion Officer and rose through the ranks until he was appointed as the first Chief Executive Officer of Zimbabwe Investment Authority in 2008 after the merger of the Zimbabwe Investment Centre (ZIC) and Zimbabwe Export Processing Zones Authority (ZEPZA).</p>
<p>Previously he worked for the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) from 1992 to 1994 as a Trade Development Executive and also the Ministry of Industry and Commerce from 1986 to 1992 where he served in various capacities in the International Trade Division.</p>
<p>His death comes when four cabinet ministers, political and business elites, as well as many ordinary people, have since succumbed to the deadly virus.</p>

Former ZIA CEO Richard Mubaiwa Dies

<p>Oil Expressers Association of Zimbabwe (OEAZ) president Busisa Moyo while speaking to the Business time said high production costs and inflation were behind the cooking oil price hike.</p>
<p>Speaking to the publication Moyo said:</p>
<blockquote><p>The recent movement of the exchange rate has an impact to additives prices which also went up,</p></blockquote>
<p>However, cooking oil capacity utilisation jumped from around 10% to over 20% since last month and Moyo reportedly said the country’s soybean production in Zimbabwe went down 20% this year from 60 000 to 40 000 which according to Moyo is enough to cater for the country’s production for 2 months.</p>

He is an accomplished business leader, industrialist, entrepreneur and nation-builder who has been recognised with various awards and accolades both within Zimbabwe and Internationally. Currently, he is the Chief Executive Officer of United Refineries Limited and a member of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Board.</p>
<p>Mr Moyo holds a Bachelor of Accounting Science (BCompt) Degree from the University of South Africa and completed his Articles with Deloitte and Touche in 1999.</p>
<p>He also holds a Global Executive Masters in Business Administration from IESE Business School (Spain). Previously, Mr Moyo has served as the Chairman of the Oil Expressers Association of Association, Non-executive Director of First Capital Bank and President of Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI).</p>
<p>The Minister is confident Busisa Moyo’s business acumen and experience will be resourceful in re-positioning, modernizing and transforming ZITF into a formidable regional and international player.</p>

<p>Zimbabwe ‘s oil expressers have been operating at 20 per cent capacity since the beginning of the year due to a myriad of challenges.</p>

<p>Chief Executive Officer at United Refineries Limited, Busisa Moyo has outlines the merits of dollarizing Zimbabwe’s economy and the other key fundamentals that need to be in place for the economy to function. <a href="https://twitter.com/Busisa74" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong> He writes:</strong></a></p>
<blockquote><p>I am hearing colleagues talking about “re-dollarization”. There are two types of dollarisation. We have been trading in RTGS since 2014. Sales on critical commodities and retail are STILL circa ~85% RTGS &amp; ~15% USD. Surging inflation and price is an issue but we are in RTGS.</p>
<p>Efficient functional markets are key to bringing stability. Markets run on confidence and consistency. People’s memories are long when it comes to the loss of value and economic trauma, it’s a natural and normal human response.</p>
<p>Use of actual USD for transacting is one format. The other is essentially pricing and thinking in USD for all intents and purposes but using local currency. There are not enough dollars at present to serve for a transaction (medium of exchange) even those dirty $1 notes have gone.</p>
<p>We are in a wild country because we don’t have sufficient market references to determine a commercial rate for the RTGS. The current street rates are based on unknown persons and unknown volumes. The OMIR is for investment arbitrage and means nothing to a retailer in Sandawana.</p>
<p>Hard currency is good for investors/savers who want stability and options (fungibility). However, traders commodities need other additional features of money in order to engage in commercial activity; portability, divisibility, universality (acceptability), predictability.</p></blockquote>

<p>Former Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries president Busisa Moyo said that industry should be prepared for turbulent times in the next three to four months.</p>
<p>Moyo was commenting on the Monetary Policy Statement (MPS) announced on Wednesday last week. He said:</p>
<blockquote><p>The next three to four months will be somewhat turbulent as the incomes and prices explore to find a new price level in RTGS dollars.</p>
<p>It depends on the goodwill of all sectors, but business is prepared to play its part in ensuring an adequate supply of commodities and stable prices and sensitivity to the plight of workers in light of cost pressures and demands that may come up in the next three to four months. A functional social contract will assist in supporting these measures.</p>
<p>… We must understand our context up to (Wednesday last week); the environment was plagued with an acute shortage of currency in the formal market, a surge in parallel market activity, price distortions, inability to report meaningfully in line with GAAP and a myriad of other challenges caused by electronic dollars (RTGS dollars).</p>
<p>The RTGS money creation was caused by fiscal deficits and an unabated desire for imports which to date amount to close to US$50 billion. The MPS addressed these issues adequately by unpegging the bond, RTGS and cellular wallet balances and allowing it to trade based on market forces.</p></blockquote>

Former Industry Boss Warns Business Of Turbulent Times Ahead

<p>United Refineries Ltd chief executive Busisa Moyo has said Zimbabwe should negotiate better deals with foreign capital to curb illicit financial flows in the country.</p>
<p>He said this at the ongoing CEO Africa Roundtable 2019 in Victoria Falls yesterday. Said Moyo:</p>
<blockquote><p>We have to be smart about how we structure foreign direct investment (FDI) in this country so that we don’t experience high levels of illicit flows, because that is where they start. There are some deals that are just not good for us in the long-term. You can look at Malaysia back at 1965 and see that such investment has brought benefits. We want those kinds of deals where partners come in with private equity fund, time horizons and decent rates. The challenge that we have got are these illicit deals that come at a cost, for instance, 36 percent in United States dollar terms, you know you are just signing your life away. And that is the real challenge in structuring these inward FDI.</p></blockquote>

Zimbabwe Should Negotiate Better Deals- Busisa Moyo

<p>Cooking oil manufacturers revealed that there is a critical shortage of raw materials. Oil Expressers Association of Zimbabwe (OEAZ) chairperson Busisa Moyo said that the situation was dire and needed urgent attention. Moyo said:</p>
<blockquote><p>We are down to a one-to-two weeks supply for cooking oil, soap and one week for soy meal on average. The situation remains critical as eggs, chicken and pork availability will be negatively affected as these depend on soy meal as the base protein source. Day old chicks and other meat sources will also suffer.</p></blockquote>
<p>A few ago the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries revealed that the majority of Zimbabwe’s businesses were left with less than a month’s supply of foreign-sourced raw materials and warned they could come to a complete standstill if the country’s foreign currency shortages were not addressed urgently.</p>

Moyo said that Zimbabwe still has a number of challenges which still need to be addressed before it is ready for marketing. Speaking at a branding conference recently, Moyo said,</p>
<blockquote><p>We are not ready, we cannot open up to the world with the way we are. This conversation is way ahead of its time, we have to talk about what kind of a country we need. We need to talk about consensus building. We have a country to create, the product needs to be created before it can be branded and marketed to the rest of the world…You need the country to grow. We are divided as a country, urban versus rural, manufacturers versus retailers, the country is polarised, you cannot market a product like this.</p></blockquote>
<p>Norton legislator Temba Mliswa added,</p>
<blockquote><p>…we have to package the product in a way that is acceptable internationally because we are now part of the global village.</p></blockquote>

<p>The Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) has said that the government’s decision to indefinitely remove all import restrictions is not well thought out because it does not address the challenges faced by local industries. CZI president Sifelani Jabangwe said the issue of inadequate foreign currency will still need to be addressed and will actually become worse. Said Jabangwe</p>
<blockquote><p>Foreign currency required by local companies to produce the same volumes is less than that which is required to bring in finished goods. So, if both require forex, how do you solve the problem by bringing in something that requires more forex? What you have is greater demand for forex and that will push the rate even higher, the prices even higher.</p></blockquote>
<p>Oil Expressers’ Association of Zimbabwe (OEAZ) president Busisa Moyo added</p>
<blockquote><p>Government will be throwing its own success under the bus for a problem that they know is not SI 122 of 2017 not being successful, but the shortage of foreign currency.  The impact is going to be felt by workers in the industry…that is the biggest and most negative impact.</p></blockquote>

Lifting Import Restrictions Does Not Address Forex Challenges Faced By Local Industries - CZI

<p>Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers (CZR) president Denford Mutashu has accused manufacturers of stockpiling goods and releasing the goods onto the black market instead of supplying the formal retailers. Mutashu welcomed the<strong><a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/10/23/govt-suspends-restrictions-on-importing-goods-says-you-can-import-if-you-have-free-funds/" rel="noopener" target="_blank"> government’s decision to suspend import restrictions</a></strong> saying that this would allow retailers to get their own stocks. Speaking to the Sunday Mail, Mutashu said</p>
<blockquote><p>
Suppliers were holding retailers at ransom by refusing to release products to the market so they could divert it to some black market cartels, and consumers would blame the shortages on retailers…But now we can buy on our own and ensure there is product availability for consumers. We will always prioritise local products and will only import to augment local supplies to avoid shortages…The situation had gone terrible but we are optimistic this should benefit consumers as well as bring price stability. People cannot get into the festive season without basics.</p></blockquote>
<p>However, president Oil Expressers Association of Zimbabwe chairman, Mr Busisa Moyo denied the allegations saying,</p>
<blockquote><p>…This is completely false, (that the shortages are a result of manufacturers holding on to their products). However, there is a lot of rent-seeking behaviour on our cooking oil products by small retailers, hoarders, arbitrageurs and rent-seekers. We have maintained prices thus far but the distortion and fake news onslaught has reached epic proportions. On cooking oil, we have maintained supplies based on what we have been offered by the RBZ.</p></blockquote>

Retailers Welcome Suspension On Import Restrictions, Claim Manufacturers Were  Diverting  Goods To Black Market

<p>The Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) has criticised the move made by the government <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/10/24/lifting-import-restrictions-will-affect-local-industries-negatively-companies-could-close-czi/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">to indefinitely lift all import restrictions to allow businesses and individuals with access to forex to import goods.</a> The CZI said the move by the government will affect local industries negatively and could result in company closures. CZI president Sifelani Jabangwe told NewsDay</p>
<blockquote><p>We believe that this is not the appropriate action because it will affect business adversely if goods were to come in and start taking away demand from local industry. I think as you are aware, as CZI, you have not heard us talk about company closures for the past two years or retrenchments, but you could actually find that it starts again.</p></blockquote>
<p>Oil Expressers’ Association of Zimbabwe president Busisa Moyo added,</p>
<blockquote><p>The issue is forex, the inefficiencies in forex allocation and so on…They gave us sufficient warning. But I think the South African manufacturing is doing a dance. The farmer in SA has a bigger market for his soya.</p></blockquote>

Lifting Import Restrictions Will Affect Local Industries Negatively, Companies Could Close - CZI

<p>Chief Executive Officer at United Refineries Limited Busisa Moyo has expressed concern at the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/10/01/govt-increases-tax-on-money-transfers/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">increase in taxes for money transfers saying that this will cut into the profit margins of businesses and industry</a>.  Moyo said that some business can potentially lose up to 33 percent of their profits to the new tax.  Presenting new fiscal measures after the mid-term monetary policy statement on Monday, Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube announced that the government had reviewed the amount charged for every money transfer transaction from 5 cents per transaction to 2 cents for every dollar per transaction (2 percent of very transaction) to widen the tax base. Moyo said that he hoped that the monetary authorities will look into this as it was destructive for the industry.</p>
<p>Writing on Twitter Moyo said,</p>
<blockquote><p>While the 2c per dollar (2%) per transaction is good for lower income levels. It will destroy our margins. In the food sector, we work on 6% margins. This is a 33% reduction in profits Please re-check!</p>
<p>…I think it’s a typo because it amounts to over $250m based on June transactions. Someone said RBZ is trying to discourage use of RTGS for parallel activities. I am struggling to see how though.</p>
<p>…A retailer with who makes a turnover of $1m and makes 5% ($50,000) margin now has 3% ($30,000) &amp; $20,000 now goes to the bank…If we didn’t care about our country we would keep quiet &amp; let things crumble! This could drive people not use the bank system. I think it was a finger problem. 0.2% no problem but 2% is creatively destructive…Anyway, we have an RBZ that is like receptive. They have taken note.</p></blockquote>

Increase In Tax For Money Transfers Will Destroy Industry's Margins: United Refineries CEO

<p>Busisa Moyo, the chief executive officer of United Refineries Limited (URL) has said that his company is struggling to meet the demand for its recently introduced product, vegetable juice. The company recently introduced four vegetable juice products, pure carrot, carrot infused with ginger, carrot with pineapple and pure beetroot.</p>
<p>Speaking to NewsDay, Moyo said,</p>
<blockquote><p><em>We have already introduced some new products; we want to introduce some more. We have been saying in the market we want to introduce more nutrition to our customers. We see ourselves as a company that is shifting our focus from just mass market to nutrition, bringing health to Zimbabweans, not just food. There is a lot of excitement about the vegetable juices, not fruit juices, vegetable juices, 100% no-sugar-added and very healthy. We are seeing that taking off very well. There is a lot of excitement on the market and we are actually struggling to keep up with demand.  They have taken off much than we thought.</em></p></blockquote>

United Refineries Launches Vegetable Juices, Says It's Failing To Meet Demand

<p>Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI)’s immediate past president, Mr Busisa Moyo, has urged the government to lower taxes in order to attract foreign direct investment. Moyo said the 45 percent rate in Zimbabwe was too expensive compared to the region. Said Moyo:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>Investors do not mind indigenisation but are worried about </em>cost<em> of production. High excise duties repel investment. That is why even companies are choosing to import items they can produce locally.</em></p>
<p><em>Zimra is in a catch 22 situation as it has to collect taxes because Government needs to survive. We are stuck with a high fiscal budget while the economy is crumbling. We cannot save because we are in a high tax environment. </em></p>
