<h2>Econet steps up its sustainability drive, joins the United Nations Global Compact initiative</h2>
Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has taken a major step in demonstrating its commitment to sustainable development by becoming a participant in the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the world’ largest corporate sustainability initiative.
The UNGC brings together businesses from across the globe to implement principles of sustainable development and corporate responsibility. It currently has more than 13 000 companies in over 160 countries.
The initiative encourages organisations to align their strategies and operations with universally accepted principles of environment, social, governance and human rights, as well as the Sustainable Development Goals, among others.
Econet Chief Executive Officer Douglas Mboweni said becoming a member of the UNCG was part of the mobile telecommunications organization’s commitment to sustainability. He said:

Econet’s sustainability journey began more than 20 years ago when the company started supporting Higherlife Foundation to provide access to education for vulnerable and underprivileged children, as well as to fund educational opportunities for gifted and talented students through scholarships.
To date, the programme has impacted over 250 000 students. In the ensuing years the company, through its partner foundation, has gone on to support various public healthcare initiatives, disease prevention, leadership development and disaster management.
Under the new commitment, Econet will strengthen its existing Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) activities, while aligning them with the company’s vision and mission, and with the UN’s SDGs to ensure that the group scales its social and environmental impact in the markets it serves.
Mboweni said Econet, which is listed on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange, was committed to ensuring that in delivering its products and services it intentionally promotes sustainability. He said:

Econet Wireless Joins UNGC Sustainability Initiative

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Cassava_Smartech">Cassava Smartech</a> Zimbabwe’s medical and logistics units, Maisha Health and Vaya, have collaborated to deliver medicines to citizens in need.
This follows the government’s reimposition of <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/01/03/si-10-of-2021-covid-19-national-lockdown/">a stricter national lockdown</a> following a coronavirus resurgence.
Mr Eddie Chibi, Cassava’s Chief Executive Officer, said Maisha is leveraging technology to make healthcare accessible to all. He said:
<blockquote>As a result of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, we recognised that seeing a patient personally may not be possible or advisable given the requirements of social and physical distancing, and self-isolation.

Maisha is a digital personal health assistant that offers a suite of comprehensive technology-enabled health services, ranging from health education, medical appointments, electronic health records, telemedicine services and remote patient monitoring for diabetics and hypertensive.
The unit recently introduced a Virtual Pharmacy that allows members and non-members to order prescription drugs over the phone.
The novel concept ensures that Zimbabweans are getting the care and support they need while encouraging social distancing during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Chibi said the innovation was made possible through group synergies with Vaya Express, bringing to fruition the group’s mandate to give Zimbabweans access to easy technology-enabled health services.

Maisha, Vaya Conjoin To Deliver Medicines To Citizens

The Steward Bank has in conjunction with businesses under Cassava Smartech Zimbabwe launched “AgroFuture,” an agribusiness product.
The companies under Cassava Smartech which are partaking in the product are EcoCash, EcoSure, Vaya, Moovah and EcoFarmer.
The product is aimed at providing tailor-made solutions to the specific needs of the agriculture value chain.
Announcing the AgroFuture product on Wednesday, Steward Bank chief executive officer, Mr Courage Mashavave, underscored the need to boost productivity in agriculture to ensure food security. He said:
<blockquote>Agriculture and food security are at the core of basic survival for the general populace across the country, hence support of agribusiness activities will certainly have a great economic and social impact.
Our product will offer solutions focused on enhancing agricultural production by providing access to finance and key innovations to farmers, rural agro-dealers, aggregators and manufacturing companies.</blockquote>
The product is launched when the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/11/28/zimbabwe-faces-starvation-matching-that-of-somalia-and-yemen-un/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">country is facing severe starvation</a> following a series of poor farming seasons.
Zimbabwe, once a breadbasket of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) now spends nearly a billion United States dollars annually to import grain.
The government has so far a number of initiatives including Command Agriculture and Pfumvudza with the objective of averting starvation in the country.

Steward Bank Launches “AgroFuture”

Mobile money company Ecocash is now limiting transactions by individuals to ZWL$5 000 per day in line with a directive from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ).
In a notice to all its customers, Ecocash said the ZWL$5 000 per day limit applies to all individual transactions which include payments to merchants for goods and services and payments for utility bills, send money and purchase data and airtime, and wallet to bank transfers, among other things.
Ecocash has also banned individuals from having more than one account. Agents’ mobile money wallets have also been banned.
At the current black market rate of about 105 to the USD, ZWL$5 000 is equivalent to USD$48. In Rand terms, it’s about R800. Using the official rate of 83, ZWL$5,000 is equivalent to US$60.
This means that an individual will need at least a week to pay for durable items such as household or office furniture using mobile money platforms.
Below is the company’s notice to its customers:
<blockquote>Dear Valued Customers Please be advised that we have received a directive from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe to the following effect:
1. Transactions by all individuals shall be pegged at a maximum of ZW$5,000 (five thousand Zimbabwe dollars) per day with immediate effect. This threshold relates to all transactions by the individual, including:
a. Payments to merchants for goods and services and payments for utility bills
b. Send Money and purchase of airtime and data
c. EcoCash Debit Card
d. Wallet to bank transfers
2. With immediate effect, no individual shall be allowed to operate more than one EcoCash 
line.
3. Merchants and Billers will continue to accept EcoCash Payments from customers.
a. Merchants and Billers are required to liquidate funds in their wallets to their Bank accounts only.
4. Agents
a. Agents’ mobile money wallets are to be abolished with immediate effect
b. Funds in frozen Agent lines will only be liquidated into the Agent’s Bank Account. The 
liquidation will require RBZ approval on a case by case basis
5. Bulk Payers
a. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe shall only approve the use of Bulk Payer lines for purposes of:
i. Disbursing low-value payments, such as disbursements for humanitarian aid 
ii. Payments related to agricultural activities
b. Funds in frozen Bulk Payer lines can only be liquidated into the Bulk Payer’s Bank 
Account upon approval by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe for each Bulk Payer

EcoCash Caps Individual Transactions At $5 000 Per Day, Agent Lines Banned

Ecosure, a micro-insurance brand from Cassava Smartech, has unveiled a new package called EcoSure Pamwepo/Sisonke in an effort to ensure that churches and other social groups have access to affordable insurance cover.
This comes as Zimbabwe’s hyperinflationary environment has significantly wiped out people’s disposable incomes as prices of goods and services continue to rise on a monthly basis, thus putting insurance beyond the reach of many. The country’s annual inflation stood at 840 per cent in July, according to Zimstat.
Cassava Smartech Chief Executive Officer Eddie Chibi said his company launched the new package to ensure that most people in the country have funeral insurance cover, despite the harsh economic environment. He said:
<blockquote>We continue to look for opportunities to use technology to solve the challenges that our community face.
This is why we are launching this package that church members and other social group members will access via a shortcode on *900# using any type of phone.</blockquote>
The EcoSure Pamwepo/Sisonke package is expected to help churches and other social groups ease the burden when a fellow group or church member passes on with packages from as low as ZWL$50 per person per month with benefits of up to ZWL$500,000.
EcoSure has so far partnered with Anglican, Roman Catholic, Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM), Zion Christian Church (ZCC), Salvation Army, United Family International Church (UFIC), Prophetic, Healing and Deliverance 
(PHD) Ministries and ZAOGA, and has plans to partner with more churches.
A church member can easily register by simply dialling *900#, selecting EcoSure Funeral, EcoSure Pamwepo and then choose their church and the province or diocese they worship from. Econet Life Chief Life and Principal Officer Godwin Mashiri said:
<blockquote>Churches and other social groups now have an option for their members to get affordable funeral cover so that when the unfortunate happens, they get a decent and dignified send-off with no burden on their church/group.
As part of the EcoSure Pamwepo/Sisonke launch promotion, proceeds from the first premium collected will be ploughed back into the churches, for them to do their projects and also ease the financial burden during the lockdown.</blockquote>
EcoSure offers affordable and reliable funeral cover, through the mobile phone as well as Burial Society Groups, to more than 1.2 million people and offers packages from as low as ZWL$50 per person per month with payouts as high as ZWL$500,000.

EcoSure Launches New Package For Churches

The Zimbabwe Professional Nurses Union (ZPNU) has condemned Cassava Smartech’s VAYA Zimbabwe for its decision to stop picking up health workers from home and limiting the transport support service from the central business district to their workplace and back only.
In a statement on Tuesday, ZPNU secretary-general Douglas Chikobvu slammed VAYA for allegedly subduing nurses when they were ready to rise up against the government, and then dumping them later. He said:
<blockquote>It never rains but pours for nurses who have been enjoying the VAYA Shuttle but just from the blue a message of pain and misery emerged without any prior notice.
No one had even budgeted for transport since we have been in safe mode, to and from the workplace as we nicely and tirelessly worked to thwart COVID-19.
… The latest arrangement is a sterile makeshift arrangement without basis and lacks logic.
How can they offer to ferry nurses a 1,5km drive while neglecting the thorny 10 plus kilometres nurses will come from to link to work?
If the VAYA is feeling the heat, let them stop servicing nurses forthwith as their approach will diffuse nurses labour movements as we pursue sustainable means and ways to our welfare.
We say VAYA bye, you came to subdue the chorus of nurses at a time when we were loaded to rise up and tell the employer the tune for a living wage and better working conditions.</blockquote>
Chikobvu said so far nurses in Gweru and Mutare had received the notices of withdrawal of the transport facility.
Meanwhile,
Econet Wireless Zimbabwe &amp; Cassava Smartech Zimbabwe Group Media &amp; Corporate Communications Executive, Fungai Mandivheyi said the company has simply reverted to its original offer to ferry nurses to their places of work and back to a central point where they catch public transport.
He said the arrangement to ferry nurses from home was only temporary and at the request of major hospitals during level one of the coronavirus lockdown.

"It Never Rains But Pours For Zimbabwe Nurses"

Ecosure, a subsidiary of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Cassava_Smartech" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Cassava Smartech</a>, has announced that it would provide doctors and nurses with protective personal equipment (PPE), life and health insurance and safe transport to and from work daily, for the coming 12 months.
EcoSure general manager Godwin Mashiri revealed that besides donating PPEs for medical personnel, the insurance company will also provide 100% education scholarships for the children of any medical practitioner who takes up the offer to work in public hospitals or clinics should they during the COVID-19 crisis. Said Mashiri:
<blockquote>We are offering free personal protective equipment for all doctors and nurses who attend to their duties at this very critical time. We are also offering free Vaya transport to both nurses and doctors, so they can commute to and from work in safe and sanitized vehicles.
We will also be immediately offering life and health insurance in the form of a cash benefit of $500 per day, for each day of hospitalisation, and a lump sum benefit of $50 000 in the event of permanent disability and eventual death caused by any accident.</blockquote>
Zimbabwean doctors and nurses went on strike early this week, demanding that the government provides them with PPEs amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.
The only hospital that was designated to deal with COVID-19 cases, Wilkins Infectious Diseases Hospital, has been temporarily closed to pave way for refurbishments.

Econet Sends Ecocash Is Now Up And Running SMSs To Subscribers

Ecocash, the largest mobile phone-based money transfer, financing and microfinancing service in Zimbabwe has asked for customers’ patience as they deal with “stability issues to optimise the availability of various EcoCash services across the new platform”.
The development came after Ecocash “successfully implemented the planned upgrade of EcoCash to a new, more secure platform” between Saturday night and Sunday, a development which saw some services including the option to buy airtime and data products with EcoCash missing from lists and the platform was also down in shops.

ZSE listed <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Cassava_Smartech">Cassava Smartech</a> has unveiled EcoFarmer Diaspora Agriculture Finance Plans to assist Zimbabweans in the diaspora remit farming inputs for their families. Cassava has partnered with leading fertilisers, chemicals and seed companies with branches in various parts of the country in the finance plan.
Speaking about the farming input remittance service, Cassava CEO, Eddie Chibi said:

Cassava Smartech Launches EcoFarmer Diaspora Agriculture Finance Plan

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Harare_City_Council">City of Harare</a> has been having collecting garbage all over the city on time this has resulted in Garbage piling up in most places posing a health hazard.
VAYA has partially come to the city’s rescue by launching a refuse collection service accessible via the VAYA app. Smart City, operated by <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Cassava_Smartech">Cassava Smartech</a> is an Extention of VAYA used to collect refuse for a fee. According to the Daily News:
<blockquote>Vaya Logistics, through its Vaya Truck arm, has asked transport companies with five-tonne vehicles to provide 50 trucks to support the private companies as an interim measure. The city has been zoned into franchises where each company will collect waste, working with private contractors</blockquote>
The City of Harare is supposed to ferry all garbage from households and get rid of it but have been having a tough time sticking to the refuse collection routine in some suburbs.

Ecocash has reportedly blocked more Agent lines as the fight against money laundering in the country continues.
Zim Price Check reports that Cassava Smartech, Ecocash’s parent company has also instructed Agents with active lines to visit the company’s offices to update their operating locations.
Cassava is said to have sent the following message:
<blockquote class="wp-block-quote">Dear Agent, you are advised to operate within your designated &amp;registered address. Visit your nearest Cassava Smartech Office by 25/10/19 to update your details.</blockquote>
Agent lines suspended earlier are reported to have been blocked now. Another message Cassava sent read:

Please note all the other lines that were owned by the agents who were barred in September have been blocked as well pending finalization of the investigations by RBZ. The lines were barred today 21 October 2019 under reference “Under investigation. Ref EcoCash Compliance. Will await RBZ to complete investigations and call them once we have received feedback from RBZ.

Ecocash, the largest mobile phone-based money transfer, financing and microfinancing service in Zimbabwe previously blocked over 4000 Agent lines which were presumed to be engaging in or promoting money laundering.
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe had issued a directive <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/16/full-text-reign-in-your-agents-ecocash-given-48-hour-ultimatum/">ordering it to rein in its Agents.</a>

ECOCASH Blocks More Agent Lines

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Postal_and_Telecommunications_Regulatory_Authority_of_Zimbabwe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ)</a>, said that it has taken note of members of the public’s complaints about incessant SMSes from <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Cassava_Smartech" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Cassava Smartech</a>.
Cassava, an offshoot of Econet Zimbabwe, has over the past several weeks been sending messages to Econet subscribers promoting its newest product, the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Sasai_App" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Sasai Application</a>. In response to complaints expressed through Twitter, POTRAZ said:
<blockquote>We have taken note of the numerous complaints and views from consumers on the continuous receipt of the SASAI SMS.
We are engaging the service provider and will communicate further developments.</blockquote>
Econet group media relations executive, Fungai Mandiveyi, didn’t answer his mobile phone on Wednesday night when contacted for comment by The Herald. He also did not respond to questions sent via WhatsApp by the publication.

Econet Subscribers Incensed By Incessant Sasai Promo Messages

Big companies are a risk to efforts to resuscitate Zimbabwe’s economy as they can determine the success or failure of government development initiatives, News Day columnist has argued.
The columnist cites EcoCash, Croco Motors and Sakunda Holdings as examples to support the above claim. Writes the columnist:
<blockquote>Econet did not need to fully exercise its power over the State, but a mere threat to challenge the ban on cash-in and cash-out pushed the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) governor John Mangudya to back down and reverse his order which had not been fully implemented.
Econet, in its court papers, had threatened to totally pull down its EcoCash platform, a move that would have seen the whole financial services sector crumbling or worse threatened the existence of the regime as certainly a public outcry would have ensued.</blockquote>
The writer also observes that <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/10/01/cassava-smartech-considers-totally-shutting-down-ecocash/">shutting down EcoCash completely</a> as Cassava Smartech, EcoCash’s parent company had suggested, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/10/01/cassava-smartech-take-rbz-to-court-over-ban-on-cash-in-cash-out-cash-back-facilities/">would have caused severe damage</a> to the government whose 2% transaction tax relies heavily on EcoCash.
The columnist also notes that Sakunda Holdings and Croco Motors have been enjoying a mutual relationship with the State and <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/20/full-text-rbz-freezes-sakunda-access-finance-croco-motors-accounts/">any action against them</a> would also have an adverse on the government.

"Monopoly A Big Threat To Resuscitation Of Zimbabwe" - OPINION

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Cassava_Smartech" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Cassava Smartech Zimbabwe Limited</a> has launched the Vaya tractor services to go with its Eco-farmer initiative to enable farmers to hire farming equipment like tractors, borehole drills etc.
Speaking at the launch of the initiative, Cassava chief executive officer Eddie Chibi explained the importance of technology in farming. He said:
<blockquote>As Eco-farmer we are not saying we are going to provide the remaining 33 000 tractors but we would like to deploy technology to make sure that the few we have are effectively and efficiently deployed.
… we are aware that ICT now plays a critical role in agriculture. When you look at the agriculture production chain, 37 per cent is lost on harvesting, storage and transportation, between production and consumption.</blockquote>
Cassava currently has over 2 000 Vaya tractors and about 1,4 million Eco-farmers, which numbers are expected to rise.
The 2 000 Vaya tractors will go some way in reducing the 33 000 government tractor deficit under the farm mechanization programme.

EcoFarmer To Provide Tractors For Hire

The RZB governor has said Econet should help the govt monitor and control Ecocash amid a cash crisis that saw Ecocash agents charging cash seekers close to 70% to get cash from them. <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/30/full-text-rbz-reportedly-directs-mobile-agents-to-stop-cash-in-cash-out-cash-back-facilities/">The RBZ responded to the mayhem by banning cash-in and cash-out transactions</a> which prompted Ecocash to go the legal route to redress the issue.
The RBZ governor was quoted by the Herald saying:
<blockquote>Econet should help us monitor and control the conduct of this segment of the financial services market because for Econet, this is their road (platform) and some roads need humps, others have traffic lights while others have detours; Econet must help us because this is their road</blockquote>
The ban on the transactions has however fueled steep<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/10/02/ecocash-agents-now-charging-100-for-cash-out-since-the-cash-in-cash-out-ban-report/"> cashout charges as reports are emerging that agents have hiked their charges and are now demanding 80% for coins and 100% for notes</a>.

Econet Should Help Us Monitor And Control Ecocash - Mangudya

Largest mobile phone-based money transfer, financing and microfinancing service, ECOCASH, has been awarded the 2019 digital wallet innovation award in the “Market Adoption” category.
The awards were held at the Mobile Payment Conference in Chicago, US by AITE Group, a global research and advisory firm, to recognise innovation achieved by digital wallet providers.
Winners were selected by a global panel of five external experts on digital payments and wallets.
Launched in 2011, EcoCash now has over 9,8 million registered customers facilitating financial inclusion for 90% of Zimbabwe’s adult population.
The subsidiary of Strive Masiyiwa’s Econet Wireless has digitised various financial transactions in Zimbabwe, ranging from domestic and international remittances and merchant payments to savings and loans.
Over 80% of Zimbabwe’s national payment volume is processed through EcoCash thereby creating overreliance on the operator.
The extent to which Ecocash is fully entrenched in the system was recognised when the platform malfunctioned not so many weeks ago.
Cassava Smartech Zimbabwe chief executive officer, Eddie Chibi said that they will continuously improve Ecocash so as to continuously speak to contemporary challenges.

ECOCASH Wins Global 2019 Digital Wallet Innovation Award

ECONET subsidiary and CASSAVA Smartech Zimbabwe’s Vaya division is reported to have registered more than 10 000 partner drivers across the country. The Uber-type ride-hailing service ‘Vaya Lift’ now gives more than 100 000 urban rides per week. 
Cassava chief executive officer, Mr. Eddie Chibi said that the hail-riding service was now available in every city and town across the country.
Mr. Chibi also said that the launch of Vaya logistics has opened new avenues which can transform both the company and the country. He said:
<blockquote>The scope of the partnerships we can forge across the economy; in agriculture, commercial transportation, construction, tourism and so many other sectors — both with private and public players — and the extent to which we can make a difference together is truly transformational.</blockquote>

ECONET Subsidiary VAYA Registers More Than 10 000 Partner Drivers

Strive Masiyiwa, ECONET Wireless and CEO has announced intentions to import into Africa more than 100 electric vehicles. He said the vehicles would be for the Vaya transport service planned to cover a 3km radius from the central business district.
Writing on Facebook, Masiyiwa said:
<blockquote>“If you want to succeed as an entrepreneur, identify a human need, and reach out to solve it in a sustainable way”!

EcoSure Introduces Rescue Services Following MARS Acquisition

Cassava Smartech, which is spun off from Econet recently has acquired MARS Ambulance service, saving it from bankruptcy.
Announcing the buying of one of Zimbabwe’s most known Ambulance company brands, Cassava Smartech Zimbabwe CEO, Eddie Chibi said:
<blockquote>“We would like to ensure that the service comes back to international standards and become the flag bearer in that industry. It will also service our EcoSure customer base, which is over 2 million strong.

Econet Related Company, Cassava, Buys MARS Ambulance

Cassava Smartech Zimbabwe has unveiled plans to introduce tractors and ambulance services under its Vaya division.
In an update yesterday, Cassava said farmers will be able to find a tractor using the Vaya App when the next planting season starts. Cassava Smartech Zimbabwe chief executive officer Eddie Chibi, says the company plans to register more than 10 000 tractors from the national fleet of more than 15 000 tractors. Tractor owners will be able to offer their tractors to other farmers using the Vaya Tractor App, once they finish tilling their own fields. The cost of the service will be standardised.
Vaya is working on introducing a car pool service, a van delivery service to help small businesses, as well as an ambulance service.
