<p>A prominent Zimbabwean writer, actor and teacher, David Mungoshi, brother to the late Charles died on Saturday aged 71.</p>
<p>His death comes barely a year after the death of his brother Charles who was also a great writer. Speaking to New Zimbabwe, Memory Chirere, who worked closely with Mungoshi and David’s late brother, Charles said Mungoshi’s death was huge blow to the arts industry. Said Chirere:</p>
<blockquote><p>As we mourn David, we also celebrate his life because he has been in our midst, he was a good friend, joyful, generous, kind, and extremely intelligent. What makes his death more painful is to those of us who know him is that it comes barely a year after the passing on of his brother Charles.</p>
<p>We are deeply saddened by passing away of David Mungoshi. Mungoshi was a brilliant writer who was will to share his expertise with upcoming and established writers.</p></blockquote>
<p>Mungoshi’s book, The Fading Son won an award at the prestigious 2010 NAMA Awards.</p>
<p>As an actor, he played the role of John Huni on the popular Studio 263 and also featured in Larry Mutasa’s short film, the postman and Ngugi Wa Mirri’s feature film, Secrets.</p>

Another Mungoshi, Prominent Writer, Actor, Dies

<p>The mother of the recently deceased prolific novelist and poet, Charles Mungoshi, has died.</p>
<p>Mungoshi’s mother passed away exactly seven days after the death of her son, Charles.</p>
<p>Charles Mungoshi succumbed to a decade-long neurological condition on 16 February at the age of 71 and was buried on Tuesday at Manyene in Chivhu.</p>
<p>Funeral arrangements for the late Gogo Mungoshi will be revealed in due course.</p>

Charles Mungoshi's Mother Dies

<p>Permanent secretary in the Ministry for Information, Media, and Broadcasting Services Ndavaningi Mangwana revealed that he attended the funeral wake of the late prolific author, Charles Mungoshi.</p>
<p>Mangwana was responding to a question by Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe Raymond Majongwe who had suggested that the government never officially commented on Mungoshi’s death. <a href="https://twitter.com/nickmangwana/status/1098612566987890688" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Said Mangwana:</a></p>
<blockquote><p>We did. The Minister of Information Senator Mutsvangwa and I attended his funeral wake. She delivered a message. Ministry of Youth was represented and the President issued a condolence message as well. Our Ministry fed mourners for one of the days from breakfast, etc</p></blockquote>

Govt Assisted Mungoshi Family During Funeral Wake - Nick Mangwana

<p>Veteran author Charles Mungoshi was buried at Manyene in Chivhu yesterday.</p>
<p>Artists that paid their last respects to Mungoshi were Albert Nyathi, Willis Wataffi, Musaemura Zimunya, Memory Chirere and Daves Guzha. Mungoshi succumbed to neurological complications at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, having battled ill-health for a decade. He is survived by his wife Jesesi, four sons; Farai, Graham, Nyasha and Charles, daughter Tsitsi and seven grandchildren.</p>

<p>The veteran author and publisher, Charles Mungoshi was on Tuesday buried at Manyeni, Chivhu. Mungoshi had been ill for ten years, from a neurological condition to which he succumbed on Saturday morning, at Parirenyatwa Hospital.</p>

<p>With the passing of Oliver Mtukudzi last month, and then this month Charles Mungoshi, Zimbabweans have been calling for the recognition of individuals that have contributed significantly to the country. Turns out, besides being declared a National Hero after one is dead, awards already exist to honour these people while they live.</p>

<p>President Mnangagwa has sent condolence messages to the Mungoshi family following the death of prolific writer Charles Lovemore Mungoshi.</p>
<p>President Mnangagwa said the death of Mungoshi came as a heavy blow to the arts industry and to the nation as a whole. Said Mnangagwa:</p>
<blockquote><p>We owe it to the prominent writers like the late Charles Mungoshi that Zimbabwe today stands tall as a literary nation. On behalf of our nation, Government and on my behalf, I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to the Mungoshi family, and in particular, to Amai Jesesi Mungoshi and the children, on this their saddest loss. In Charles, they have lost a dear husband, a loving father, a caring guardian and a creative mentor who greatly inspired and gently nursed and nudged creative talent in the big artistic Mungoshi family, and in the fraternity of writers by whom he will be sorely missed. May his soul rest in eternal peace.</p></blockquote>

Mnangagwa Mourns Charles Mungoshi

<p>The Zimbabwe Writers Association (ZWA), through the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ), has requested that the government confer the hero status on the late prolific writer Charles Mungoshi who passed away at Parirenyatwa Hospital at the age of 71.</p>
<p>ZWA chairperson Monica Zodwa Cheru-Mupambwashe confirmed that her assocoation has approached NACZ. She said:</p>
<blockquote><p>In my capacity as the Zimbabwe Writers Association chairperson, I formally communicated the request to the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe on Saturday. I would personally want to see Charles Mungoshi recognised at such levels.</p>
<p>His writings are a valuable, intangible cultural heritage in so far as he captured facets of our traditions, the changes wrought by time and made us question our definition of our self-identity with characters like his iconic Lucifer.</p></blockquote>

Confer Hero Status On Charles Mungoshi; Govt Told

<p>The family of the late Zimbabwean author Charles Mungoshi has released funeral arrangements.</p>
<p>Information released by journalist Hopewell Chin’ono is that mourners are gathered at 47 Uta, Zengeza 1, Chitungwiza. Mungoshi’s body is expected to leave Harare for Manyene, Chivhu on Monday 18 February. <p>Renowned Zimbabwean novelist, Charles Mungoshi died yesterday at 71. Mungoshi wrote both in Shona and English and he’s remembered for such titles as <em><strong>‘Waiting for the Rain’ </strong></em>and<em><strong> ‘<i>Ndiko Kupindana Kwemazuva</i>.’</strong></em></p>

"Ah, Charles Mungoshi, thank you for the consciousness," Fellow Writers Mourn

<p>Prolific Zimbabwean writer Charles Mungoshi has died. He was 71.</p>
<p>Mungoshi died in the early hours today after battling ill health for nearly a decade. Mourners are gathered at his family house in Chitungwiza and funeral arrangements are yet to be announced. Below are some of the reactions to Mungoshi’s death by Zimbabweans on twitter:</p>

How Zimbabweans On Twitter Are Mourning Charles Mungoshi

<p>Celebrated Zimbabwean author Charles Mungoshi has died. Below are nine things you probably did not know about the award winning legendary author:</p>
<p>1. He started writing poems and short stories whilst he was still in primary school<br/>
2. He skipped a grade in primary school then known as standard 2<br/>
3. He published his first novel in 1970<br/>
4. In 1996, he worked as a Resource Person at Groningen Children’s Book Year Workshop in the Netherlands.<br/>
5. In 2000 he was a visiting lecturer at the University of Florida in the United States of America where he was also a lecture in the department of African Studies.<br/>
6 In 2003, he received an honorary doctorate degree (Doctor of Letters-Dlitt) from the UZ.<br/>
7. He was married to Jessie Mungoshi who played Neria alongside Oliver Mtukudzi in the popular drama Neria in the 90s. They have a son called Charles Mungoshi Junior.<br/>
8. He has won 5 local and international awards for his work.<br/>
9. His last book is titled Branching Streams Flow in the Dark .</p>

9 Things You Probably Did Not Know About Charles Mungoshi

<p>Celebrated writer Charles Mungoshi is able to speak again after undergoing a successful operation on Thursday last week. Mungoshi had suffered from a build-up of fluid in his skull resulting in him losing the ability to move and speak. However, after undergoing an operation to replace a shunt that was inserted last year to drain the fluid to his stomach, he is able to speak again. He started speaking on Saturday and was discharged from the hospital on Independence day.</p>
<p>His wife said:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>I met with the doctor on Saturday. There’s a lot she still wants be done on vaMungoshi, but the improvement is tremendous. He asked for </em>Farayi’s<em> Behind the Wall Everywhere to read it. He also surprised me by asking for the book Live Like an Artist and I was wondering where he heard about this very recent book.</em></p>
<p><em>But the doctor said he was banking a lot of information over the months he could not speak. He just couldn’t bring it out and now it’s time for him to let it all out. She is excited by his </em>recover<em>.</em></p></blockquote>
