Simbarashe Chiimba, a 42-year-old soldier from Mutoko, was brought before the Nyanga Magistrates’ Court for failing to comply with a maintenance order.
On March 6, 2023, the court ordered Chiimba to pay a monthly maintenance of US$75 and ZWL$33,000 for the upkeep of his three minor children. This order was to take effect on March 31, 2023.
However, Chiimba defaulted on these payments from December 31, 2023, to June 2024, accumulating arrears of US$520.
The court sentenced Chiimba to 5 months’ imprisonment, but the sentence was wholly suspended on the condition that he pay all the outstanding arrears through the clerk of court by August 30, 2024.

A soldier named Simbarashe Chiimba didn't pay money for his kids' upkeep. The court told him to pay $75 every month from March. But he didn't pay from December to June, owing $520. The court gave him 5 months in jail, but didn't send him if he paid all by August. Chiimba must pay by the deadline or go to jail. His story was in the news (Pindula News).

Soldier Sentenced For Defaulting Maintenance Payments

Russel Goreraza (40), the son of Zimbabwe’s former first lady Grace Mugabe and stepson of the former president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, was arraigned before the Concession Magistrates’ Court facing charges of contravening Section 23 of the Maintenance Act Chapter 05:09 “failing to comply with maintenance order”.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), on 04 January 2024, Goreraza appeared before the Concession Magistrates Court and was ordered to pay US$2500 or ZWL equivalent at the prevailing inter-bank rate per month as maintenance for his child.
He allegedly defaulted payment from January to March 2024. He owed US$7,500 as of 31 March 2024.
Goreraza, who appeared as a self-actor, requested a postponement to seek legal representation and the matter was remanded to the 28th of May 2024.
Goreraza is Grace’s son from a previous marriage to Stanley Goreraza, an Air Force pilot. He has been in the public eye for various controversies, including allegedly grabbing mines and houses.
In 2015, he was convicted of culpable homicide after a road traffic accident in which he hit and killed an unidentified man in Harare. Goreraza was fined $800 for the incident. He was also arrested for allegedly stealing mining equipment.

Grace Mugabe's Son, Russel Goreraza, Defaults On Child Maintenance

The late former President, Robert Mugabe’s daughter, Bona, is demanding US$8 100 per month in child maintenance from her estranged husband Simbarashe Mutsahuni Chikore (46) as maintenance for their three minor children.
Bona Nyapudzai Ouma Mugabe (32) is divorcing her husband of nine years on the grounds that their marriage has irretrievably broken down with no prospect of restoration.
She filed the papers at the High Court on Tuesday, 07 March 2023 under HC 1521/2023 seeking an order for a decree of divorce.
According to the court papers, Bona and Simba have lost all love and affection for each other and have been living apart for more than nine months.
The couple has three children aged seven, five and two.
Bona is claiming custody of the children and demanding US$2 700 per month for each child. She said:

In the event of the granting of the Divorce Decree by the honourable court it will be just and equitable that the Defendant be ordered to pay maintenance for the minor children in the sum of USD2, 700.00 per child monthly, until attaining of majority status or they become self-sustaining whichever occurs first.

Bona and Simba married in 2014 and the ceremony was attended by the political and business elite in Zimbabwe and outside the country.
The wedding was also broadcast live on the country’s only television channel, ZBC-TV.

Bona Mugabe Claiming US$8 100 Monthly In Child Maintenance

Musician Seh Calaz, whose real name is Tawanda Mumanyi, could be arrested for defaulting in paying $45 000 monthly maintenance for his minor child.
Harare magistrate, Judith Taruvinga, ordered Mumanyi to pay $45 000 in monthly maintenance fees effective 31 March 2022.
The Zimdancehall chanter is expected to provide support until the child reaches the age of 18.
Mumanyi was also ordered to deposit the money into the account of the mother of his child on or before the 30th or 31st of every month.
However, the musician is now in arrears, according to a letter from his ex-lover, Moira Knight, which she wrote through her lawyers. Part of the letter reads:

Further to the Magistrates’ Court order requiring you to pay $45 000 monthly for the minor, we write to you to kindly make payments as required by law promptly without delay.
And, clear the arrears of amounts due, failure of which we are instructed to institute criminal proceedings, without further notice to you.
We trust that this shall not be necessary.

The maintenance was broken down as $15 000 for food, $10 000 (rent), clothes $5 000, medicals $5 000 and ancillaries $5 000.

Seh Calaz Risks Arrest After Defaulting On Child Support Payments

A woman from Gweru’s Senga suburb allegedly borrowed a baby from her friend, which she used to claim US$1 800 from her ex-husband.
Naume Chitsa of Nehosho area in Senga suburb in Gweru has since appeared before Gweru magistrate Beaulity Dube facing one count of fraud.
She pleaded not guilty and was remanded to 15 June on free bail.
Chitsa allegedly borrowed a baby boy from a friend and lied that her ex-husband Kevin Dube was the father. Dube paid US$1 800 for the child’s upkeep.
Prosecuting, Thando Sibangani Dube said that on 19 April 2018, Dube and Chitsa got married for about a month and separated over the issue of pregnancy.
At the end of January 2019, Chitsa advised Dube that she had given birth to a baby boy and he should come to see his child.
It was further alleged that from that day onwards Dube was supporting the baby financially. Dube, however, was doubting the paternity of the child.
In April 2022, Dube allegedly phoned his mother and asked her to meet with Chitsa so that she could have an opportunity to see her grandchild.
The court heard that after seeing the baby, Dube’s mother advised him to take the child for DNA tests if he wanted to be sure he was the father.
Dube then stopped giving financial support to Chitsa, prompting his ex-wife to approach the Civil Courts for a maintenance payment.
Dube was summoned to appear in court as a respondent for maintenance but before the trial date arrived, he was tipped off that he was not the biological father of the child.
The court heard that Dube received a phone call from one Confidence Chikamhi who is Chitsa’s friend who advised him that he had been misled into believing that he had a son with her.
Chikamhi told Dube that the child used to claim maintenance by Chitsa was hers. Chitsa and Dube met in court on 5 May.
Chitsa brought the child to court and Chikamhi was called as a witness. The child went to Chikamhi who told the court that she was the mother of the child.
Chitsa was arrested and the matter was transferred to the criminal courts for prosecution.

Musician Seh Calaz’s ex-wife, Moira Knight, has been granted ZWL$45 000 by a Harare magistrate after the estranged couple’s maintenance dispute spilt into the courts.
In her application, Moira claimed US$1 050, and US$2 450 as a once-off payment and an equal share of the two’s matrimonial property and medical fees.
However, Harare magistrate Judith Taruvinga rejected Moira’s claims and instead ordered Seh Calaz, real name Tawanda Mumanyi, to pay $45 000 as monthly maintenance effective 31 March until the child reaches the age of 18. Taruvinga ruled:

She was demanding US$300 for rentals, US$120 (electricity), US$45 (gas), US$100, US$110 (clothes) and transport US$100.
The monthly maintenance of US$1 050 is above the respondent’s income and in my view not realistic.
The respondent is ordered to pay $45 000 as monthly maintenance effective March 31st until the child reaches the age of 18.
Moira will furnish the clerk of court with her local banking details.

The maintenance has been broken down as $15 000 for food, $10 000 (rent), clothes (5 000), medicals (5 000), utilities ($5 000) and ancillary ($5 000).
Meanwhile, Seh Calaz’s lawyer claims the order is unrealistic and based on “speculative evidence as well as inadmissible evidence.”
The musician said he will appeal against the magistrate’s decision at the High Court.

A Johane Marange Apostolic Church polygamist shocked the Mutare Magistrates Court recently when he disclosed that he divorced one of his wives for refusing to provide for him financially.
Fungai Marange (36) of Marange was dragged before Mutare magistrate, Xavier Chipato, by his estranged wife Molline Mufudza who was applying for $15 000 maintenance for the upkeep of her four children who are all below the age of five.
Marange accused Mufudza of applying for maintenance as a way of fixing him after he sent her packing when the couple appeared in court last week on Thursday.
He told the court that according to his religious doctrine, his three wives must support him and their eight children as he is the head of the family. Said Marange:

All my three wives know that it is their duty to take care of the family. They do gardening together and we sell the vegetables and fresh maize to take care of the family.
Mufudza is stubborn. She knows that I am uneducated and therefore cannot be employed anywhere, but she insists that I should take care of her.
She became wayward when she realised that I could not secure a job. She started putting on short dresses like the one she is wearing today. It is totally unacceptable in our church.
She even stopped attending church services. Look at her, she does not even have a headscarf on her head.

Marange said the $15 000 that Mufudza was asking for was too much, and offered to pay US$15 every month for the four children’s upkeep.
Mufudza told the court that Marange is a builder, but he denied the claim, saying he was his late brother’s assistant.
Chipato ordered Marange to pay US$15 monthly maintenance for his four minor children.

A Mutare man has been jailed for 8 months for failing to pay maintenance for his 3 minor children’s upkeep. The man has defaulted since 2016. Mutare Magistrate, Tendai Mahwe sentenced Tenderai Zisengwe (40) to 8 months in prison.
Magistrate Mahwe said that Zisengwe’s offence was a serious one, as he had been irresponsible towards his children. He was also in contempt of court for his failure to pay $110 every month towards his children’s upkeep.
The magistrate also ordered Zisengwe to pay the maintenance arrears in the sum of $2 970 immediately or stay in prison for eight months.
Zisengwe said that he failed to pay maintenance due to financial constraints as he had been unemployed since 2016.

Mutare Man Jailed 8 Months Over Maintenance Arrears

A Harare teenager is demanding more than $1 000 from her former boyfriend for the upkeep of their one-year-old baby.
Rutendo Wadzinganyama, 19, of Glen View suburb, demanded $1 140 from her car dealer boyfriend Confidence Mucheka when she appeared before magistrate Nyasha Marufu.
When she was asked by the magistrate to justify the amount, Wadzinganyama failed to do so. The teenager, who still resides with her parents, demanded $150 for medical aid cover, $150 rent, $50 entertainment, and $100 for clothes, $50 for electricity and water bills.
After considering Wadzinganyama’s request, magistrate Marufu had this to say:
<blockquote>This does not even reach $1 000. You see it is difficult to justify a figure you plucked out of nowhere. You cannot just sit down and demand such an amount.</blockquote>
