The Roman Catholic Church and villagers in Chishawasha, Goromonzi district, are involved in a land dispute after the church announced plans to evict over 200 families from their ancestral communal land and convert it into a church-run urban settlement.
The villagers have taken the matter to court to seek an order to stop the evictions that will affect seven villages under Chief Chinamora. They want the Jesuit provincial superior of Zimbabwe, Fidelis Mukonori, to transfer the title deeds to them after conducting land surveys.
Mukonori is accused by the ZANU PF leadership of working with high-profile party members who are part of the Catholic Church to unlawfully evict the villagers and divide the land into residential plots for resale, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200020039/land-grab-exposes-zanu-pf-factions">NewsDay</a> reported citing court papers.
The land dispute goes back to the 1890s when the Chishawasha clan, also known as VaShawasha, was forced off the land by white settlers. The land was given to the Catholic Church as a token of gratitude for their support of the Pioneer Column.
The dispute intensified during the time of former President Robert Mugabe when the Minister of Local Government, Ignatius Chombo, ordered the remaining villagers to leave their land. However, there was a faction within the ruling ZANU PF party who disagreed with this decision.
In a letter dated March 9, 2021, the ZANU PF leadership in Goromonzi district accused some government officials of supporting the Roman Catholic Church, causing them to lose political support in the area. Read the letter in part:

The proposed developments in Chishawasha have opened a can of worms and exposed high-profile people as you will find out.
Our Zanu PF party and the residents of Chishawasha need assistance from our leaders of the party since the urbanization issue wasn’t done in good faith.
The Jesuits formed a bogus Chishawasha Development Association as a divide-and-rule tactic, thereby offering a few rich selected residents with 99-year leases. The Zanu PF MP (Phineas Chiota) representing Chishawasha held a meeting with the Jesuits at Garnet House, thereby silencing the eviction issue facing residents around 2006. He instructed the Jesuits to leave the Vashawasha people with their land.

Some ZANU PF officials have accused Fidelis Mukonori of using his influence as a renowned priest and confidante of former President Robert Mugabe to pressure the government into facilitating a land grab. The party alleges that Mukonori colluded with the then Minister of Local Government, Ignatius Chombo, to promote the Greater Harare project, which involved the government and the Jesuits working together.
The ZANU PF leadership claims that Mukonori and Chombo held meetings with village heads, threatening them with arrests for allowing new settlers in Chishawasha. They also accused Mukonori of misleading residents into thinking that the urbanisation scheme was genuine, only for eviction papers to be given to other residents. The local ZANU PF leadership has called on President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government to intervene and halt the evictions. Goromonzi district, known for its proximity to Harare, has been targeted by land barons and politicians for housing schemes.

Roman Catholic Bishop Mukonori Accused Of Working With ZANU PF To Evict Villagers

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Energy_Distribution_and_Transmission_Company">Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC)</a>, a subsidiary of the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has issued a power outage update for the Harare region. 
In an update seen by Pindula News, ZETDC said there is a Mail Line fault which authorities are working on in the areas listed below. The power outage update issued on March 5, 2023, said the areas affected are:

Chikurubi, Support Unit, Chishawasha, Donnybrook, Mandara, Greendale, Part of Chisipite, Part of Highlands, Gletwin, Part of Msasa Industrial Area, Msasa GMB, TM Pick and Pay, Greendale Part of Greendale, Letombo Park, Coronation Avenue, Cecil Road, Athlone Road, Amby Drive and the surrounding areas.
</blockquote>
 Added the company:
<blockquote>
Customers are advised to treat all circuits as LIVE during this period as power may be restored without notice. Our teams are working to ensure full restoration of service in the shortest possible time.
</blockquote>
In another update, ZETDC also said the power outage experienced in Gunhill, Harare and the surrounding areas yesterday the 4th of March 2023 was a result of a cable fault in the area. Said ZETDC:

Power Outage Update Harare Region

The Administrative Court has barred a couple from Shwawasha Hills from hosting events like weddings at their place after neighbours had complained about too much noise coming from the place.
Five neighbours approached the court appealing an earlier court order that authorised the couple, Gerald and Leah Nachipo, to host events for a fee.
The couple and the City of Harare were cited as respondents.
The residents said the noise from the events was disturbing their peace. The couple, however, opposed the application, arguing that it had a valid permit to host events for a fee.
Court papers say the couple held a meeting with its neighbours in the Shawasha area in August 2018 following complaints about noise.
The residents later submitted a petition to the city council, which, however, granted a permit to the Nachipos to use their residential place as a wedding and events venue.
This prompted the residents to appeal to the Administrative Court.

In his ruling, Judge Justice Herbert Mandeya said:
<blockquote>_The court’s view is that there are sufficient indications that there were improprieties that led to the first and second respondents by the third respondent. Applicants engaged the first and second respondents on several occasions over the noise emanating from the first and second respondents’ premises at times they wished to rest peacefully. That shows they value their peace._</blockquote>
The City of Harare did not oppose the application.
The couple was ordered to pay the cost of the suit.

Couple Barred From Hosting Weddings Over Noise

Commuters have of late been forced to fork more out their pockets as public transporters have hiked fares to unprecedented levels. Transport fees are increasingly becoming too high for people who commute to work daily.
Ordinarily, a civil service employee earns a net salary of $400 or less after deductions have been made which can be sucked up by just the bus fare and the lunch expenses that one incurs on a daily basis.
Commuter omnibuses that ply the City- Chitungiza route at times charge $4 for a single journey while Greenncroft kombis charge $1.50.
On Monday night, commuter omnibuses that go to Mabvuku were charging a fare of $2.50 for a distance of only 21.1km whilst Marondera was charged $7 and Domboshava $5 which is unbelievable considering that not so long, Mabvuku used to be charged $1 and on a good day you could even pay as little as $0.50.
In an interview with The Mail and Telegraph, a driver who plies the Glen Lorne-Tollgate -Mother Care -Chishawasha route had this to say:
<blockquote>We had to abandon our usual rates as everything we need to keep our vehicles safe and roadworthy is being demanded in foreign currency, whether it is tyres, oils or spares, we have to pay in united states dollars that we can only get at a rate hence our prices also needed adjustment.
It’s not only about spares but also the fuel factor. There some service stations that are demanding foreign currency and we have to resort to paying hard currency since they don’t have long queues other than spending the whole day in a queue whilst people don’t have transport.
There is now an air of despondency and fatalism among daily commuters who feel that they are now working for transport fares and nothing else.</blockquote>
