More than 2.1 million Zimbaweans have been vaccinated against cholera in the single dose reactive campaign to curb the latest outbreak of the disease that has been reported in all of the country’s 10 provinces.
The month-long vaccination drive, which ended on 22 February 2024 in Harare, targeted people older than one year in 26 high-risk districts in seven provinces.
The 2 303 248 vaccine doses were received in Zimbabwe in three batches, with the final batch of 66 612 received on 17 February 2024.
The vaccination campaign was supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the African Region.
The first phase was completed in target districts in Harare province, as well as in Masvingo, Midlands and Mashonaland Central, achieving over 90% coverage.
Vaccination teams went from door to door, complementing fixed vaccination points in all health facilities in the affected areas.
Each vaccination team comprised three community health workers (comprised of a vaccinator, social mobilizer and recorder), and vaccinated an average of 150 people a day.
The Ministry of Health and Child Care, in collaboration with other ministries and supported by WHO, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and other partners, rolled out a multisectoral cholera response.
It focuses on streamlining the coordination of the outbreak response at all levels, treatment of cases and prevention, through improved access to safe water, sanitation, personal and food hygiene, and the dissemination of preventive messages to vulnerable and at-risk populations.
Jean-Marie Dangou, Acting WHO Representative in Zimbabwe said:

While oral cholera vaccines are a critical component in the cholera response, it is important to highlight that cholera thrives where sanitation and clean water are scarce or inadequate.
Cholera is a disease of inequality. We must therefore acknowledge the critical work that remains.

According to the Ministry of Health and Child Care, as of 4 March 2024, Zimbabwe had 27 182 suspected Cholera cases, 2 734 confirmed cases, 26 482 recoveries, 71 confirmed deaths and 502 suspected deaths.

More Than 2.1 Million People Vaccinated Against Cholera In Zimbabwe

The Harare City Council (HCC) has provided an update on the growing number of cholera cases in the city and the ongoing water problems. According to the local government authority’s statement seen by Pindula News, the cases of cholera in Harare are increasing. As of 23rd November 2023, there have been 150 confirmed cases and 15 deaths in Harare. The statement read in part:

The most affected areas are Kuwadzana, Glen View, Glen Norah and Budiriro. The following have been identified as factors contributing to the spread of cholera:
1. Drinking of untreated borehole water
2. Drinking untreated well water
3. Attending and eating at gatherings
4. Attending gatherings and shaking hands
5. Presence of burst sewers in the communities
6. Consumption of cooked food from unlicensed vendors
</blockquote>
The Harare City Council has suggested some recommendations to address the cholera outbreak. They are urging everyone to work together to prevent more people from getting infected and dying from cholera. They are also asking people to report any suspected cases of cholera. It is important for everyone to cooperate and take action to stop the spread of the disease. We present the recommendations below:

a. seek early treatment to prevent death. Treatment is free at all council clinics.
b. Avoid gatherings.
c. Treat all borehole and well water with water guard or aquatabs before drinking
d. Avoid food from unlicensed vendors
e. Report any suspected cholera case or death at the nearest clinic.

Some individuals who read the statement expressed their disappointment, stating that they feel the local government authority is not taking the disease seriously.
The local government authority acknowledges that water is a major factor contributing to the cholera outbreak. However, they have been unable to effectively address the long-standing water problems faced by the city. In a recent update on the water situation, the city authorities admitted that certain areas in the city have been without access to water. Read the update:

There was a serious burst on our internal reticulation network at Prince Edward yesterday (Wednesday) at 2200hrs. As a result of this, the plant was shut down as chemicals could not be prepared.
This shutdown has negatively affected water supply to the southern suburbs.
Work to repair the pipe is ongoing and normal operations are expected to resume anytime soon.
The affected areas include R.G. Mugabe International Airport, Cranborne, and Hatfield, parts of Chitungwiza, Mbare, Sunningdale and Graniteside.
Most areas in the southwestern suburbs including Glen Norah, Glen View, Kuwadzana and Rydle Ridge are accessing water except for Budiriro which is currently not accessing water.
The north-western suburbs including Tynwald, Bloomingdale and Dzivaresekwa are not accessing water.
Water supply to the northern suburbs including Hatcliffe, Borrowdale, Mt. Pleasant, Hogerty Hill and Helensvale is yet to be restored. 
Other areas in the zone like Vainona, Gunhill and New Alex are now accessing water.
The CBD and surrounding are accessing water.
The eastern suburbs of Greendale, Mandara, Mabvuku, Tafara, Zimre Park and Epworth are currently not accessing water.

On the 23rd of November 2023, Harare was only able to supply 411 megaliters of water, even though the daily demand is over 1,200 megaliters per day. The water infrastructure in Harare was originally built in 1953 to support a population of 300,000. However, the city now has around 7 million people during the day and approximately 2 million at night.
Harare’s Deputy Mayor, Kudzai Kadzombe, recently stated that the city is unable to provide the required 1.2 million megaliters of water to ensure that every household has access to running water. She mentioned that the only solution is to look for other sources of water, such as the Kunzvi Dam. In addition to the water shortage problem, it has been discovered through tests that the water provided to people’s homes by the local authority in Harare does not meet the standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO). Furthermore, when the water comes out of the tap, it appears greenish in colour. Tests have shown that the water from boreholes in many neighbourhoods, both low-density and high-density areas, is contaminated. Water from unprotected sources such as shallow wells is also unsafe to drink. This contamination is believed to be the cause of the recurring cholera cases in the city. Due to these issues, many people in Harare are relying on private boreholes and wells in their homes to ensure they have access to safe and clean water for sanitation purposes.

Harare Gives Update On Growing Number Of Cholera Cases And Ongoing Water Problems

Zimbabwe has recorded a cumulative 3 017 suspected cases of cholera, with Manicaland having recorded the highest number at 1 251, followed by Harare with 1 121.
This was said by the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Monica Mutsvangwa, during a post-cabinet media briefing on Thursday. Said Mutsvangwa:

The nation is informed that as of 24 June 2023, Zimbabwe’s cumulative suspected cases had reached 3 017, with 2 910 recoveries, 19 confirmed deaths, and 52 suspected deaths.
The case fatality rate (CFR) for all deaths, confirmed and suspected, was 2.4%.
All provinces have reported cholera suspected cases, with Manicaland having recorded the highest number at 1 251, followed by Harare with 1 121 and Matabeleland South Province with 277.
Cholera-confirmed deaths have been recorded in Manicaland (12), Harare (3), Mashonaland Central (2), and Mashonaland West and Masvingo with one case each.
Regarding the regional situation, a cumulative 154 317 suspected cholera cases and 2 747 deaths have been reported in the African Region.

She also said the Government will take measures to address the water, sanitation challenges which are fuelling the cholera outbreak.

<h2>Cholera Symptoms</h2>
Cholera symptoms typically appear within a few hours to five days after infection and can range from mild to severe.
The most common symptom is a sudden onset of diarrhea which is often described as “rice-water” stools because of its pale, milky appearance with flecks of mucous and sometimes blood.
The other cholera symptoms are:

Zimbabwe Records 3 017 Suspected Cholera Cases, 52 deaths

Forty (40) people developed cholera symptoms a few days after attending a wedding at a resort on 10 June 2023, the Harare City Council has said.
Five cases had been confirmed to have been cholera cases by Friday, 16 June 2023.
In a statement, the local authority said the guests were from Malborough, Budiriro, and Glen Norah suburbs, among other areas, while others were from outside Harare. Reads the statement:

There was a wedding on the 10th of June at a resort in Harare. Around 350 guests attended. At least 40 of them developed cholera symptoms some few days after the wedding and as of 16 June, 5 had been confirmed to have Cholera.
The Guests were from Malborough, Budiriro, and Glen Norah among other areas. Some from outside Harare. We expect more cases as secondary cases arise from these.
We urge residents to continue practicing good hygiene to mitigate the spread of cholera.

Guests Contract Cholera At A Wedding In Harare

The Harare Metropolitan provincial authorities have ordered the closure of all unlicensed and unclean food outlets in the four local authorities of Greater Harare as Harare reports 307 cases of cholera in various suburbs, ranging from overcrowded Mbare to leafy Mount Pleasant.
The metropolitan province now has the second-highest number of cholera cases since the outbreak began three months ago, with Manicaland reporting the highest number of cases. Other provinces that have reported cases include Matabeleland South, Mashonaland West, Mashonaland Central, and Masvingo. The province is implementing a range of prevention measures, including the closure of dubious food outlets. Harare Metropolitan Provincial and Devolution Permanent Secretary Mr Tafadzwa Muguti said:

During this outbreak all local authorities have been directed to stop all unlicenced shops and unclean food outlets from operating in open spaces.
All shops, restaurants and food outlets to have clean toilets with running water.

The local authorities are Harare City Council, Chitungwiza Municipality, Epworth Local Board and Ruwa Local Board.
The Harare Metropolitan authorities have called on schools and office buildings to ensure that toilets have running water and soap. The area is facing two major problems related to water and sanitation.
The proliferation of unplanned and illegal settlements without sewers and piped water, and the run-down state of Harare City Council’s water purification plants, which operate at only half their capacity. The council is attempting to rectify these issues by closing down contaminated wells and distributing non-food items to prevent the spread of disease.
Cholera outbreaks continue to plague Zimbabwe. In Manicaland, village health workers are conducting disease surveillance and education, while officials are monitoring public gatherings to contain the spread. Mashonaland West is struggling to provide medical attention to a community rooted in religious belief, leading to resistance to scientific solutions.
Health experts are providing water samples, aqua tabs, and disinfection, and raising cholera awareness. The government has activated civil protection units, provided supplies, and offered refresher training for health workers.

Schools in Manicaland Province have put in place measures to prevent a cholera outbreak in the institutions as they welcome learners back for the Second Term.
Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Monica Mutsvangwa last week told a post-Cabinet media briefing that so far, Manicaland has recorded 27.4 percent of the country’s suspected cases of cholera.
Mutsvangwa said as of 29 April, the country had recorded 588 suspected cases of cholera, with 161 of them in Manicaland.

Schools Open Amid Rising Cholera Cases

The Harare City Health Department has activated emergency Cholera response systems after three confirmed, and 11 suspected cholera cases were recorded in Budiriro 1 over the past five days.
According to <a href="https://healthtimes.co.zw/2023/04/27/11-budiriro-residents-contract-cholera-after-drinking-water-from-contaminated-well/">Health Times</a>, the 11 suspected cases and the confirmed three, all emanate from one area in Budiriro 1 where residents get water from an unprotected water source.
Speaking during a recent Media Science Café organized by the Health Communicators Forum in Zimbabwe (HCF), City of Harare Epidemiologist, Dr Michael Vere said they have identified and closed the well which is the source of the infections. He said:

We have got 11 suspected Cholera cases but amongst these cases, three have been confirmed already.
The first case was recorded on the 22nd of April and this was a 15-year-old Child who stays in Budiriro 1 and has got no history of travel to any of the areas affected so far by Cholera in Zimbabwe or in the region.
We are investigating local sources of this infection and so far, what has been done is that we have taken water samples from the water sources of these 11 cases and there is a common source which is a Well at one of the households of these cases.
This is a Well that we are suspecting and we have also closed the Well and we have also collected samples from surrounding boreholes and some well close to that area and we are awaiting results.

Speaking at the same event, however, Harare Residents Trust (HRT) Director, Precious Shumba criticised Harare City Council for failing to provide adequate water supply for residents. He said:

Cholera occurs sporadically when water supply, sanitation, food safety, and hygiene are inadequate (City of Harare, 2009). Vending sites have no water and sanitation facilities.
There are no toilets or sources of water to service the majority of vendors in the communities.
Water is in short supply across the suburbs with residents largely dependent on community boreholes and shallow wells, especially in Mabvuku, Tafara, Glen Norah, Chitungwiza, Epworth, Budiriro, and Glen View.
Reports of sewerage bursts are not being urgently attended to when they are made to council offices dotted across the suburbs.
There is very poor responsiveness of the council in tackling this health challenge.

11 Budiriro Residents Contract Cholera From Contaminated Well

Mozambican citizens continue to cross the border to Zimbabwe to seek medication for cholera which has affected hundreds of people.
Authorities say 25 cases out of 121 suspected cases reported in Zimbabwe emanate from one village in Mozambique.
The villagers from Kadunje are currently being treated for Cholera at Chiwenga Clinic, Centenary District, Mashonaland Central Province, bordering Mozambique.

Authorities in the Ministry of Health and Child (MoHCC) of Zimbabwe say they cannot turn away Mozambican citizens from seeking cholera medication on grounds of their nationality or migration status.
Ministry of Health National Spokesperson, Mr Donal Mujiri told <a href="https://healthtimes.co.zw/2023/03/17/more-mozambican-nationals-troop-to-zimbabwe-for-cholera-treatment/#utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=more-mozambican-nationals-troop-to-zimbabwe-for-cholera-treatment">HealthTimes</a> in an interview that their mandate was to save lives. Said Mr Mujiri:

As you are aware, most Clinics that are in areas bordering Mozambique end up treating nationals from both Zimbabwe and Mozambique due to the porous nature of our borders. We cannot send patients away. As the Ministry of Health, we are mandated to treat every patient who presents with an illness at our facilities regardless of their nationality.
</blockquote>
Mujiri added that Zimbabwe is very much prepared to deal with the cholera outbreak adding, “We are in control of the situation.”
Mozambique has to date recorded 7 720 Cholera cases, making it one of the countries in the Southern African Region with the highest number of Cholera cases after Malawi which has 36 081. 
In the whole African region, 44 839 Cholera cases have been confirmed while 1 245 deaths have been recorded.
Health and Climate experts have warned that the situation in Mozambique and Malawi could worsen on the back of Tropical Cyclone Freddy which has heavily destroyed health and water infrastructure. 
In Mozambique, Tropical Storm Freddy affected 44 000 people, damaged or destroyed 55 health facilities and damaged nearly 3500 km of road, according to preliminary assessments.

Mozambican Citizens Go To Zimbabwe For Cholera Medication

Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Health and Child Care has declared 17 cholera hotspots around the country.
The 17 cholera hotspots are:

<li>Chimanimani, </li>
<li>Chipinge, </li>
<li>Chitungwiza, </li>

<li>Gokwe North, </li>
<li>Marondera, </li>
<li>Mazowe, </li>
<li>Shamva, </li>
<li>Mutare, </li>
<li>Murehwa, </li>
<li>Mwenezi, </li>
<li>Seke and </li>
<li>Wedza.</li>
</ol>
The development comes as the southern African nation has recorded at least 31 new suspected Cholera cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of suspected cases to 98 and confirmed cases to eight.
Distribution of the 31 new suspected cholera cases according to place:

i). 15 in Centenary, 
ii). 11 in Beitbridge, 
iii). four in Chegutu and 
iv). one in Chivi, 
</blockquote>
Among the laboratory-confirmed cases recorded in the past 24 hours, were three from Centenary in Mashonaland Central Province.
The first cholera outbreak in the country in 2023 was reported in Chegutu in February.
An estimated 41 872 confirmed cholera cases and 1 202 deaths have so far been recorded in Africa.
The bulk of new cases at 36 081 has been recorded in Malawi, which is facing its worst cholera outbreak in two decades. 
Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with Vibrio cholerae bacteria. 
People can get sick when they swallow food or water contaminated with cholera bacteria. The infection is often mild or without symptoms, but can sometimes be severe and life-threatening. 
Five Basic Cholera Prevention Steps
<blockquote>
a). Be sure you drink and use safe water. 
b). Wash your hands often with soap and safe water. Before, during, and after preparing food. Before and after eating food or feeding your children. After using the toilet. After cleaning your child’s bottom. After taking care of someone who is sick with diarrhoea.
c). 3. Use toilets. Wash hands with soap and safe water after going to the bathroom.
d). Boil it, cook it, peel it, or leave it. Cook food well, keep it covered, eat it hot, and peel fruits and vegetables. Eat foods that have been thoroughly cooked and are still hot and steaming. Avoid raw vegetables and fruits that cannot be peeled.
e). Clean up safely. Clean food preparation areas and kitchenware with soap and treated water and let dry completely before reuse.
Bathe and wash clothes or diapers 30 meters (100 feet) away from drinking water sources.
